Of course not. Main reason Malaysia is behind is cause of extreme racism.
If you force any company to literally give a huge chunk of any business in Malaysia to their rival, the company will not invest unless really forced to, such as mining companies and companies that have to be in Malaysia.
After the financial crisis, Mahathir took the opportunity to blame everything on foreigners to consolidate his power. Racist policies were rampant, causing the slow demise of Malaysia.
If you’re a Malay, you’re incentivised to be lazy. If you’re of any other race, you’re incentivised to leave if you can. If you’re a business owner you’re incentivised to only do the minimum investment, because Malaysia Govt can seize your whole business at any time and give it to bumis.
So the Malaysia Govt is filled with inefficient Malay bums. If you’re an investor doing big business, and costs is not a consideration, would you prefer Singapore or Malaysia?
In the end companies only come for cheap labour and resources, and nothing else. Low investment, low growth.
Show me the incentives and I’ll show you the outcome.

As a former Malaysian who has worked in Singapore now for just over 20 years, my experience is that the Malaysian system (during my time at least) did not have a system to seek out and reward its talent.
Can you imagine: after obtaining a decent bachelor’s + post-graduate degree from the UK from a good Uni (Cambridge) my starting pay was RM1,800. (Private sector). Granted it was a long time ago (1997). Anyway I gave Malaysia 6 years of my professional life then moved to Singapore who welcomed me with open arms. I proceeded to build my career here. Economic rewards aside, it has been a fulfilling and an engaging career.
On the topic of rewards, I am fortunate to be able to afford things like skiing holidays in Europe every year. I don’t think I could do that working as a professional in my industry if I had stayed in Malaysia.
I’ve always thought that the time for Malaysia to turn its act around, has long since gone. I waited and waited - no improvement. In fact things got worse. So in my view that boat has sailed. The corruption of the Mahathir era and the damage done during his administration was so widespread and the rot so deep, there’s no fixing that.
I wish Malaysia all the best. I really do. She has so much to offer. It’s just such a shame things turned out the way it did for her.

GST/VAT not only gives a great revenue generator. but the main purpose of GST is to be used as a "FISCAL TOOL" for controlling the money supply M1 in circulation through fiscal policy along side Monetary policy. policymakers can adjust the GST rate in order to expend (loose) or to contract (tighten) the economy accordingly on the country business cycle. that's the reason why the whole world adopts GST/VAT, its has been proven for many decades GST/VAT were a great effective Fiscal tool, (as a TOOL not as revenue generators) example like singapore's fiscal policy. GST also will greatly improved foreign investor confidence and increase in "HOT MONEY" result in strengthening MYR value..no matter how much we talk about economy bla bla.. without an effective fiscal tool Malaysia can never become an advanced economy.. Since GST would bring additional revenues as well (revenue generating not its main purpose main purpose is act like a TOOL but it still gains more revenues the current tax system) gov could invest in better education, build more public transport for better productivity, invest in research and development. if malaysian dont believed in GST/VAT then stop dreaming of Malaysia becoming an advanced economy, keep on living in the jungle...

Weak currency makes imports pricier that's why Malaysians mostly cannot afford branded foreign goods compared to average Singaporeans. Stronger currency makes retirement easier when people can move to countries with weaker currencies where their money can stretch further. Most Malaysians who work in Malaysia entire life will find it difficult to retire comfortably, unless they want to live in poverty. The average Singaporean can easily afford bungalow and sportscar in Malaysia.

Malaysia missed the opportunity to ride on SG's economic successes when Ghani replaced Muhyiddin as Johor's MB in 1995. SG proposed IMS growth triangle in 1989 and went well till Ghani took over. However, Mahathir was not satisfied with the direction of this growth triangle and does not want to be SG's backyard. He wanted equal partnership but did not realised the huge economic disparity and international influences between SG and MY. So in 1994, knowing that IMS-GT will soon fail, SG looked north east, i.e., Suzhou Industrial Park, China (SIP) for growth. Instead of huge MNC companies setting up businesses in Johor, they went to SIP instead.
    What a shame.
Is it too late now to revive IMS-GT? Maybe it's worth another look now that China's cost is no longer cheap and all those geopolitical fight?

Bad Mad Man made to influence those decisions and there is nobody/system installed to stop and avert such poor intended harm.

Truth is, most Malaysians working in Singapore are receiving competitive pay equilvalent or better than Singaporeans, not what the guest miscrued as lowly paid cheap labor. Other than that, you got to factor in the levy for workers especially the unskilled ones. People work for decent pay as well as career progression. Malaysians go across to Singapore to work daily also for because of higher SGD exchange rate and lower cost of living in Malaysia, a best scenario for many. Irregardless, I wish the best and improvement in malaysia's work enviroment.

Sorry mate but I think this interview did not address the Elephant in the room. I am Malaysian but moved to the Uk some years ago. The main issue with Malaysia is affirmative action vis a vis the "Malay privilege". In case you didnt get the memo, Malaysia is the poster child for affirmative action globally. No smart person like being discriminated against, especially in today's day and age, hence the brain drain. Furthermore, developed economies focus on the services sector as opposed to manufacturing where the hunt is for cheap labour. So until you guys start having an open discussion about it vis a vis how the Malay privilege is destroying the country, anything else is just a plain waste of time, because it all stems from that. But Good luck !

@@eugp4198 What's your point? If you leave the country you grew up in you are not allowed to speak the truth or mind? I believe I am actually doing you a favour mate by speaking out when I know how difficult it is to do so when living there. In fact it appears that even the non Malays have become complecent on this issue over the years. But hey if you want to continue living in denial and happy with the status quo and you are fine being treated like a second class citizen in your own country then kudos to you. But please dont preach to those of us who demand the basic need of being treated equally and are fed up with this stupidity and have the clarity to see the direction of where this toxic culture of affirmative action is heading. You know it as much of how impossible it is to ever convince the Malays on this issue. In fact I have a long list of friends who are preparing their well educated children to move abroad to different parts of the world. Instead of attacking those who worked hard and have been discrimated against at various levels. Why dont you reflect and contemplate the issue ( not that it needs much contemplation really ) Felling like home in a country you grew up in is natural as I am sure the Sri Lankans, Pakistanis, Labenese and the likes feel about their country that is currently in ruins. But so what? Does this give Malaysia a pass to continue behaving as it has been for this long? I dont get your logic? Malaysians are great at dancing around the issue but never dealing with it straight on. Ps: Since you are on the topic of working abroad ( no idea why you even brought that up?) I am currently in Japan accompanying my husband, working from home for myself so it deosn't matter where I work . In fact I can work at a desk in Malaysia and pay significanly lower tax and have more close friends there then in the Uk or Japan or where ever, but its my Principals that hold me back. Malaysian are not lazy or dumb. However some politicians think we are dumb or make us dumb.
The main problem of Malaysia is gaji ciput and the employers mindset treat Malaysian workers like coolies like what their ancestors faced during the British / Japanese occupation.
If you ask the smart people to solve what Malaysia facing right now, we can solve it but the problem is “kau siapa?” “Kau anak menteri/datuk/datin”? Status Quo
What do smart people do? We further study away from Malaysia and present the same ideas to other countries tak kisah negara kaya miskin they accept our ideas. Thats why you see people further study at UK and minta MARA like beggars then once graduated become Si Tanggang and talk bad things about Malaysia. “Oh Malaysia, 1mdb and Najib, government bad , good food and shopping only”.

What no one seems to mention is that Johor's cost of living is substantially higher than the other states. depriving the poorer off from necessities and increasing discontent.
Singapore had exported their inflation - It's costing them to keep the SGD up, but the alternative is massive inflation in a small country with very little resources, a tightly packed population, and wealth equality competing equally for those limited resources.

@YewOw Running a country is never easy as it is complex, consisting of many parts. There is certainly more than one way to run a country well, and even this is not static as the government needs to adapt to changing conditions, locally and globally. By just focusing on one aspect of a problem, it often prevents one from seeing the big picture. Many underlying issues with bad governance are multi-facet. I would argue that running a successful Singapore is far more challenging because there are far more less favorable conditions for Singapore than many other nations.

Aligning public expectations with reality, and a country's vitality is much easier when there's no racial, religious, educational, historical and idealogical disparity to grapple with. There are a myriad of opposing groups with opposing goals and opposing views, with opposing methods, all persuing opposing self-interests.
Easier to contend with external forces, when the job of governing is a given.

At 13:22 - Paraphrasing: "Malaysia has no talent problem. Malaysia has a pay problem." Maybe. If Malaysia does not have a talent problem, then ANY Malaysian can move across to Singapore and get hired (assuming no barriers to employment)? I think that is not true. I think those who cross over to Singapore to get jobs have talents, and (employable) skills, and are (correctly) educated. Malaysia has a brain drain (or brain leak?) problem with Singapore. Meanwhile, many of those who remain are not employable in the global (or at least, Singapore) market. (Some are employable, but for reasons choose to remain in Malaysia. More power to them!) Investors settle on Singapore because our labour force is appropriately educated, and employable by investors. Singapore's HDI is ranked 13th worldwide (0.939). Malaysia is ranked 62nd (0.803). Maybe Malaysia has no talent problem. But compared to Singapore, it comes out second.
BUT... Malaysia has problems that Singapore does not have and does not need to address. But what the Malaysian govt can do is to bring the education system up to standard, to produce talents investors can use. Maybe not nationwide, in the first instance. But if those graduates can get high-paying jobs, then parents will want their children to go to those schools. There is no quick fix.
