I am a casual listener of Red Velvet. I have only heard their main title tracks, but Bad Boy is by far my favorite Red Velvet song. As a US kpop fan, I think Bad Boy is more my style. Though, I know that Red Flavor was a big hit in Korea. When I first got into kpop, the cute girl group songs/style was a big culture shock.
From what I understand, kpop gg are made to appeal to male fans. Tho, I know that gg have female fans as well. I was so surprised hearing all the fanboys fanchant at music shows and watching fancams, seeing how many male fans are in the audience. The most famous, successful girl groups in the US, like Destiny's Child, TLC, Spice Girls, Fifth Harmony, etc. appeal to young girls/young women as their main fanbase. Successful US gg sing about female empowerment, female friendship, etc. Personally, I don't think cute concepts that most kpop gg use could work in the American mainstream. Blackpink is the only kpop gg that I think could maybe work in the American mainstream and 2ne1 before they disbanded.
Now that BTS has shown that mainstream success is possible in the West, I wonder if more gg will try for stronger concepts? I think it will be especially hard for gg to balance the tastes of the Korean/Asian market with the tastes of the Western market. Thank you for another interesting video!

frontline327 Thanks for the food for thought! As someone who spent 10+ years in the States I can relate to how alien the girl groups feel. Although I really like Blackpink, 2NE1 is still the closest group I could relate to.
One of the reasons I like the male groups I like (BTS, Winner, etc.) is their growth arc as artists and people, and I wish I saw more of that in girl groups. I am also hoping G-IDLE would demonstrate more of that in the future.
As for Red Velvet, I think their music and visual concepts are so unique and high caliber. They aren't exactly my "type" but I am intrigued by their nonchalant manner, as it feels different from other groups. I don't know if it's a good thing or not, but I could use more variety at the moment 😅

Minidance I agree. More and more kpop artists are involved in the production process and there is an increased expectation in that direction. I can name many male idol groups that are involved in the production or lyric making (BTS, Winner, iKon, seventeen, Stray Kids, etc) but I am not really aware of many gg that are involved in production. While men in kpop are being taken more seriously as artists, I don't see that shift in attitude toward female artists in kpop. I know there are women in kpop who are more involved like IU and Sumi, but it seems to be the exception not the rule. From what I know, the current top gg, Twice, Blackpink, Red Velvet, none are involved in production.
I don't want to stereotype male gg fans, but it seems like they prefer the manufactured perfection of kpop. I read online that a lot of male RV fans were really angry that Irene read a book about feminism. Their outrage seemed quite extreme. To me, that reaction says that male fans are more interested in the visuals of gg, but not interested in the growth of artists or the perspectives of women.
I think that's why I find it hard to connect with gg. To show growth as artists, they would have to show a more honest side of themselves. Showing flaws or deficiencies is frowned upon in kpop but especially for women. Kpop seems to be especially cruel about female flaws. Maybe, I'm too harshly stereotyping all male fans or maybe I am unaware of female producing idols.
