- Love vs. Hate: RM addresses his 양가감정 兩價感情 (double-value-emotions), which has been a long-time theme in his music. 양가감정 can be translated to ambivalence, dichotomy or juxtaposition of emotions.
This is not an upbeat song. You can sense a depressing, cold, dry, inhumane place but also a strange, vague sentiment of attachment and hope. And for many Koreans, that's spot on.

thank for this explanation, specifically the last part of the Mv, where RM is sitting in the car at the Han River, I didn't get it so much, now it does make sense to me.
Sophisticated and beautifully done explanation and exact verbalization of what I feel everytime I hear the song. RM's confession sounds like "I love you, life, I hate you life, but only when love and hate is the same word," and it resonates so much in me, a Korean who's been through and knows what he's saying about Seoul and life. Hi, thank you for this video, honestly I've been listening to Bangtan's music for a while now, but Seoul really resonated on me a lot, it's just a song that I can always go back to, it's calming but like what the song is about, ambivalence, it also gives you this fleeting feeling, that makes your heart pump. I'm not gonna say much more cause I don't want to waste your time but thank you for your hard work.
I'm only now just finding this video, but I'm so glad that I did. Your explanations always help to deepen my enjoyment of the song. This idea of having a juxtaposition of emotions towards a place and your life really resonates with me as well. I feel like most people reach this at some point, which makes RM's lyrics so relatable. I especially feel this way towards my hometown. It's a major city undergoing massive renewal, but still has major issues of violence and social inequality. It's a beautiful place with lots of fun things to do. So many cool new things are being built to make it more family-friendly and safe, but many families that have lived there for generations are being pushed out because of the rising cost of living. It's one of the most expensive cities to live in in the US and plenty of people who grow up here can't stay.

You didn't talk about the bridge that I think is a great play on words. He says "I'm livin' you. I'm leaving you." Which expreses again the same ambivalence he feels about Seoul. He constantly leaves Seoul but he can't help but live it and in it.

I relate to this song in some sense. I recently just moved from my hometown on the east side to the city at the west of my country . The distance is like Busan to Seoul. Currently where i'm staying is only 21 minutes away from the capital city of the country, it wasn't a big change bec I come here very often when I was younger. But something about here gave me that double value emotions. Sometimes, it gets hard for me. I ponder on whether I should give up just there and moved back to my hometown for good, where my family is, and where love is. I can only ever contemplate on that bec in the end of the day I still have to continue doing what i'm doing.

It's always a pleasure for me to learn more and more about Korea 💜 Capital cities are like that.. mine too, it reeks of power and money play, lacks sincerity and community feels. When i was in Seoul, people don't smile and walks so fast, the buildings are high and packed. Contrary when i was in Gwangju and Incheon, i see more people smiling, relaxing, the buildings are more separate, more trees, feels wider. I guess it's the price you gotta pay for modernization 💔 It doesn't have to be that way though..

Amazing explanation. I learned a lot from your video. Not to make this about me but I grew up in new york. Brooklyn New York to be exact. I left there in my teens and went to live far south in the United States. After living in the south and then visiting then going back to my home town in New York I had a very reflective and ah-ha moment and I had a similar perspective to the things RM is talking about in this song. In fact every time i go back I feel a lot of thoughts and emotions similar to what RM is saying in this song. even though I have now permanently left New York I still have a longing and love-hate relationship with the original place I called home. I now understand the song more due to your video, thanks.
