I breed several colors of standard cochins, some colors have the tenancy to have tighter feathers then others such as the red lace ones are tightly featured. Just a side point. All of mine are good layers except when bloody or moltting. Maybe that is why they are considered to lay less then others but during that time they are doing a different job for you. They are the sweetest breed I've ever had in my 50 yrs of chicken keeping. If you are considering this breed you will not be sorry.

Yep. We have 10 Cochins of multiple colors. Our rooster is Doc a big Buff Cochin. They all have unique goofy personalities. Doc is an amazing guardian and a great rooster. They are comical. friendly and gentle. You do need to build your roosting bar a bit lower to the ground with a way for them to get up to it. Our roosting bar is about 3 ft high and a few straw bales give them the step-ups they need. They do like to eat. None of ours are obese but they tend to hang out around the feeders. They are hilarious to watch when they run. They will be toward the bottom of the pecking order as they are not interested in establishing themselves as the boss. Eggs are medium sized light brown eggs and you can expect 3 per week generally. Very good setters and great mothers. Love them.

I had a Bantam Cochin rooster and he was the sweetest little guy ever. Miss him terribly. I’m planning on getting a small flock of just bantam Cochins now because of him.

I love my blue Cochins, super to handle and my 3 hens give us enough eggs a week to kerp us from buying at the store. Great pets.

I've raised many large and bantam Cochins. The roosters are stately and beautiful. The hens are quiet and peaceful. I've always let mine out to free range a defined area and fed only in the evening after shutting in the pen, so mine never sat around by the feeders.

I have a bit of an issue. I was given 3 very cute feather legged cochin chics. I stated that I would like them to be hens if possible but it is hard to tell when just hatched out. Well this morning one started a silly tiny crowing sound.. My thing is I named all three already . Barbie, Amelia, and Goldie,.. Well guess what Barbie is the rooster.. :D

Sometimes when you have a group of females, without access to a rooster, one of them will become the “alpha.” The crowing could be caused from a hen stepping up in place of a rooster that isn’t present :) One of my girls has done that
