When I was 19 to 20 years old I became from a crappy swimmer to an expert, sport swimmer in a matter of months, mostly by teaching myself through RUclips videos. This is definetly my favorite sport. 🏊♂️
Any specific channel or video that helped? I can swim in the deep end fine but my technique just feels off and I don’t know what I’m doing half the time. Any tips?

I took some swim lessons in early 2020 (before lockdown), but couldn’t practice at all until now, when my city’s public pools began to slowly reopen. This video is so helpful and makes me feel much more confident about returning to the pool in a few days! Thanks so much, great video and great instructor!!
This was the best video I’ve seen yet on total beginner lap swim help! I’d never have known about the flags ,judging distance , etc . Most swim videos use lingo a beginner doesn’t understand! It’s very intimidating for an adult who can basics swim but not “ proper “ swim ! Thanks
Thanks for remembering us. Other topics: breathing, stroke mechanics, good cross training for swimmers to make them better, proper kick, how to avoid burnout, etc. My biggest hurdle as a novice has been breathing properly and relaxing, as having endurance. I'm good for about 4-6 laps and have to stop. Goal is to swim not necessarily fast, but for a longer duration.
@@jimmyb3845 thanks - I play a lot of different sports and find I'm over analytical on technique - so I think you're right once I relax and just allow the stroke to happen, it'll get easier. Thanks for the comment.
Think of having a long body and slow down your stroke so you glide as long as possible - 3 secs or so - before the next stroke. You’ll have your hand and arm and shoulder in a long reach in front of you which will encourage body rotation in the torso, hips, legs, and feet. And, a cheat tip, the less you kick, the longer you’ll be able to go. Kicking is more tiring than getting smooth, long, slow pulls during your stroke.

By the way, i remember using the same reply as well when people asked me about my progress) . But now, going to pool the second time in years, i intend to swim back and forth between walls w/o interruption. As of now i complete one full go without problem but approaching the end i feel my lung capacity just won't let me. So i'm trying to get even more comfortable with pool water by diving my head often and attempt to push my breathing boundaries every now and then, hopefully, to get bigger lungs. ( like in GTA San Andreas ))).
Moved into a neighborhood with a pool an wanted to use it for workouts but been super intimidated but this really helped! An actual guide for beginners

I know right most pools in my area aren't that big they used to have a Olympic size public here until it closed have not been in so long but got a hotel room with a decent size pool and I will be in the a long time I miss swimming so much
So I'm a runner. I was running 10 miles religiously every other day. Until I got iliopsoas Bursitis. I would like to adopt this sport and get good at it. Good video.
Instructions were perfect but had to turn the video off as the wind noise (I'm assuming that's what it was) was so distracting and made it hard to hear in some places. Definately make more videos but get a wind shield for the mic.
Excellent video! I believe the instructor's name is Paige, and she does a fantastic job in teaching the basics. I swim fairly consistently (a side crawl), and I would like to learn to properly swim the freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke.
I took swimming lessons as a kid. They never told us anything about judging the distance from the wall. So thank you, now I know over 10 years later hahahah
I so wish I had professional swimming lessons when I was a child. When you learn to swim the correct way, I’m sure this sport is enjoyable and will keep you fit
Brilliant tips had no idea what the flags were for ! I find “masters swim “ in my town not friendly at all, or welcoming . It is mainly for swimmers that do triathlon training ( I was told by a YMCA employee) Totally contrary to what USMS was supposed to be for . Thank goodness for your videos ! As an adult who can swim but not “ properly “ I feel it’s common of 1960’s born kids to never have taken lessons but mostly taught by our parent or sibling as a toddler . I know NOTHING about pool etiquette etc I just long to look like those gorgeous am swimmers that are gliding thru their lanes as a splash and kick like a 5 yr old ! Rotfl ! So glad others say they’ve self taught bc I cannot find any help to teach adults how to “ properly “ swim as an exercise ! Thank you so so much

I need to focus on overcoming the reflex that closes my sinus when my head is underwater. I have never successfully exhaled through my nose while my head is underwater. My swallow reflex activates every time! I'm 48 and just starting to get into swimming for exercise! I've got a way to go, but I'm determined to learn the techniques!

For my SHT(learn), of breast stroke - they havd me, dive down - then ease up! Like a snorkeler. Feet - follow down - nearly 90deg. Helps with - patience of - next stroke cycle. Helps, the breath expansion.
i just started swimming again. i took lessons when i was around 10? and havent really swam since. my main problem is just that i suck at breathing, i overestimate how long i can go and end up super out of breath from pretty slow swimming. also my goggles always leak. brand new, but ive never found goggles that fit my eyes well and dont leak. any tips?

I used to be a swimming instructor but all my students were toddlers, so it was interesting to see this communicated for adults! I would be like “alright, time to bob for apples and then blow out the birthday candles” followed by “ok let’s make a rocket ship with our arms and get ready for take off”. I never knew how to communicate these steps without sounding like a child.
I go to my local Gym at 5am and noticed nobody uses the Pool at that time so I decided to add swimming into my workout. I'm actually not a good swimmer. I can freak out and panic though I took classes as a child. I never learned how to close my sinuses (when you learn as a baby) eithwr so water goes in my nose. I need confidence.
You're the second person in these comments that mentioned 'closing sinuses'. I'd never heard of it before, so I just Googled it. I can do it, but now I need to figure out when I need to do it without doing it at the wrong time and choking myself, lol!

I'm going to start Masters once I have a better handle on things. This is very nice of them to have these for adults and I hope I can live out my dream of being a swimmer even though it's later in life. I’m learning to swim now as an adult - I’m about 6’4” 190 lbs and I’m having difficulty floating, my feet keep sinking when I try to kick with assistance of a kick board. Any tips?
fins would probably help. Never learned to swim as a kid. Two years ago after double hip replacement ended running and walking briskly, decided to learn to swim. Started kicking laps first with burner fins. Two years later I can do a decent backstroke and freestyle and am working on butterfly. I am 87 yr old female. Love it.
I constantly get calf and arm sprains and injuries when I go lane swimming but can run often with no issues. How do people avoid swimming sprains? Do people usually stretch a lot before swimming? I would like to regularly swim as a hobby but the constant injuries are off putting.
At the pool where I swim it’s recommended to o shower before getting in the pool. If you use cool water to shower you ll have an easy time to get into the water.
I practice some of these at my pool (HOA), but the pool’s wall is much higher than the water level. Im also short…. So I struggle to learn the breathing techniques. Any other suggestions for that?
@@ASMRyouVEGANyet I just learned that, so after a deep breath blow it out from your nose as soon as you put your head in the water. If you are on your back try humming a song, while holding your breath. Was that helpful?
Pretty good, very difficult to cover everything in one video so not bad. But for a beginner, it's never this simple. It depends on the person mind you but simply gliding can be terrifying for some people.
@@PatriciaMartinez-ty4er Many adults simply standing up hard. You can't just stand up, you have to rotate your body so that the hips drop, then stand up. I've seen people try and stand up feom the feont only to slip and then faceplant the water. I agree in principle but in reality it's not always that simple.

Try yoga for swimmers

Yes we definitely recommend stretching before swimming, and a proper warm up will help with this, too.
At the pool where I swim it’s recommended to o shower before getting in the pool. If you use cool water to shower you ll have an easy time to get into the water.

What a beautiful pool.
I practice some of these at my pool (HOA), but the pool’s wall is much higher than the water level. Im also short…. So I struggle to learn the breathing techniques. Any other suggestions for that?

@@ASMRyouVEGANyet I just learned that, so after a deep breath blow it out from your nose as soon as you put your head in the water. If you are on your back try humming a song, while holding your breath. Was that helpful?

Pretty good, very difficult to cover everything in one video so not bad.
But for a beginner, it's never this simple. It depends on the person mind you but simply gliding can be terrifying for some people.
Stay in the shallow end. All you have to do is stand up.
@@PatriciaMartinez-ty4er Many adults simply standing up hard. You can't just stand up, you have to rotate your body so that the hips drop, then stand up.
I've seen people try and stand up feom the feont only to slip and then faceplant the water.
I agree in principle but in reality it's not always that simple.
