Arirang Alone is a Korean folk song written in the hope and longing for the reunification of Korea. Sohyang's arrangement is a masterpiece and her vocals are mind blowing as always. Thank you for the reaction, loved it. Check out her rendition of Bridge Over Troubled Water next from Immortal Songs 2 2018.
She is the most fantastic singer! Thanks for your reaction! If you have not reacted to her videos 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' From Immortal Songs, KBS Kpop, or 'I Have Nothing' from the DMC Festival (her in a blue dress) you should be prepared to have your mind further blown, and then 'Everyone' is considered even by her to be her most difficult song to sing. It is a masterclass by a monster vocalist.
This is a Korean folk song, very simple’in construction but turned in to this more anthemic effort by sohyang’s amazing talent for musical arrangements. Not only is she a vocalist of the highest standard ( worlds best for me at the moment) but also a very talented musician, a university lecturer on the subject by day. It interesting when musicians like yourself point things out with regard to the arrangement because I think a lot of the intricacies of her work are lost on your everyday person, like myself,we just know that it sounds amazing but not necessarily why. As a violinist I knew you would love this because of all the strings. This is not a typical song choice for her but the theme of the week on the show was ‘traditional’, hence the song choice & the national dress. With regard to your comments about ‘gospel’. She very often incorporates elements of gospel in to her arrangements of songs that aren’t usually associated with the genre, some more than others but only if it enhances the song, she would never be so disrespectful to just add gospel because she can, but ruin the song in the process, but when the song allows her to, this lady can really take you to church. Obviously you didn’t know ‘Arirang’ but some people have a faint recognition of the melody, after all it is very catchy. The fact is that the Korean ice dance team used it, with sohyang’s help, for their free programme in the Winter Olympics( can’t recall the year). I think for your next Sohyang experience you should start checking out some of her performances of songs you are already familiar with, hence a more obvious way of checking out her arrangements directly with the original arrangement. I think the best place to start, and the song which I think is many peoples intro to sohyang, her rendition of Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘bridge over troubled water’ from the ‘immortal songs’ series. You coul mad actually pick anything you’ve been recommended & you’ll still be blown away because her default setting is just ‘brilliance’. I know it hard to believe but she can rap ( song ‘day day’), rock it ( Mona Lisa) sing blues/jazz ( ‘Misty’), she can pay homage to Whitney like no other ( ‘I will always love you’/ ‘ I have nothing) the list is endless but beware, she is very very addictive 😂😂
Just imagine one country, peaceful and everything fine, then war breaks out. That is the heavy middle section. Then they work to becoming one country again. This is what she is telling in the story and with the music. She is one of, if not the best musical story teller ever.
You need to continue reacting to this amazing queen, please react to Everyone Bridge over troubled water Lean on me I have nothing Fate Oh holy night Where are you Mona Lisa Breath Home Day day Amazing grace And the list is large but I know you will be in complete shock with these, great job by the way my friend!
You will probably go crazy over her "Everyone" live performance but I would suggest checking out her Bridge Over Troubled Water and Lean On Me performances before you check out Everyone. Then after that you can check out her performances on the tv shows King of Masked Singer/I Am Singer/Begin Again. And do react to her fancam performances if you want to hear her raw fancam resonance!
'Arirang' is a group of folk songs in Korea. They all differ in melody, context and mood region to region except for the fact they share the word 'Arirang' in the chorus. The word 'Arirang' can mean nothing and everything, and has to be interpreted in the given song's context (it's a bit like the word 'Oom-Pah-Pah' in the musical 'Oliver!'). The most famous version of Arirang is from Seoul region, and it became the favourite of the nation in the 20's when it was sung in then a hit film of the same title. Its soulful simple tune landed itself to be sung in both joyous and sad occasion and with different lyrics. The song went wherever Koreans went during the colonial time - whether as hard labourers to Pacific islands or so-called 'comfort women' to Southeast Asia. The local natives who had contacted with these Koreans, who were dislocated forcefully by the Imperial Japan, still remember the tune of Arirang after half a century. Now, 'Arirang Alone' is a modern variation of this famous folk tune. It assums a lone voice wishing for the reunification of North/South Korea (hence Arirang 'Alone'), picturing the image of a sea journey from Halla-mountain in the South to Baektu-mountain in the North. The journey is going to be rough (and in this context, 'Arigang Hill' represents the obstacle to overcome), and may be forced to break down occasionally... but the lone voice still encourages to carry on and others to join in hand-in-hand. In this Sohyang arrangement, she turned the simple ditty to a full blown journey - starting off as a somewhat naive, childlike lone voice hoping for the journey to reunification. It soon meets the rough sea and obstacles as represented by the dramatic transition, but, as Korea's modern history proves, she wouldn't give up the spirit and carry on with renewed energy. When the song reaches the chorus of the famous folk tune, which literally every Korean knows, she encourages the audience to join in, simbolically to join in, hand-in-hand, to this journey to reunion. But at the end, she comes back as the lone voice, now somewhat more melancholic because indeed the journey to reunification is still far and rough... but as the closing line says ('We're going over Arirang Hill'), she wouldn't let go of the hope. With this historic and cultural context, one would be able to understand better why this Sohyang rendition of 'Arirang Alone' struck the heart of Korean public.
I'm extremely old and she is the most amazing female vocalist that I currently know to exist. Thank you so much for reacting to this it's very nearly my favorite song of hers I think it probably is it goes back and forth because they're also good. If you would like to hear something less produced she works with a group called Begin Again Korea and This song is called love poem. Actually anything you choose to listen to will be completely worth your time she doesn't sing anything bad truly thank you again I really enjoyed your reaction
Your reaction mirrors my own especially when the intro of the violin came in followed by the arrangement afterwards with that hair raising high note and dramatic mid section. This is very well arranged version of this folk song and pays a great homage to Koreans and this theme they share together. Got job Sohyang!
GREAT reaction! I know this is your second reaction, but welcome to Sohyang world ❤, MY opinion the best ever that walked this planet, vocalist, performer, person. She touches your soul when she performs. My suggestions, next Bridge Over Troubled Water, or Everyone, or Lean on Me, all from Immortal Songs, anything She does is pretty much EPIC. 👍❤❤
Thank you for your wonderful reaction!! You said oh! Wow! In all the right places :-) that tells me that it was all genuine. I’ve been her biggest Stan for a number of years and after a while, after appreciating all the devastating techniques and performances, you begin to see her differently… She’s the only one that I can confidently say who looks “proud” before her God on and off stage and during these hard times that we live she really looks to be God sent. Btw, I’m as atheist as anyone can be. There are some really powerful recent performances you should check out like. Upon this rock, i’ll always love you, wildflower (… too many). She’s in her mid forties and her voice evolved since the arirang and you raised me up days, I think for the better! Thank you again for your wonderful reaction and I really hope to see more Sohyang reactions from you.
The winner of a previous episode (Song So Hee) with her rendition of the same song, stated that Sohyang's "Arrirang" was 100 times better than her own one. I think that statement alone speaks for the level of craftmanship/performance. For her more stripped down vocals try "I will Always Love You" or "Misty" from KoreaBeginAgain performances.
As Jo PlayingtheSims says, Arirang Alone is a modern song (1990) derived from an very old folk song. Having said that, the song has the very retro feel (60s and 70s) unlike 90s Korean songs. Sohyang and her team turned this song into a masterpiece. The song portrays the unification of North and South Korea which are vastly different. Sohyang and her team rearranged this song to musically show the two different countries can't harmonize, thus, very dissonant, but eventually become unison as the lyrics sing "flow, flow and becomes one" where the violins go crazy and her voice goes crazy. I think this arrangement perfectly expressed the story of the song musically. On top of that, she utilized Korean traditional and modern instruments to harmonize perfectly as well. Sohyang and her team know how to keep the main theme of the song and yet give a totally new feel or turn it into a new song with Sohyang's voice. In this case, the original song had an idea of the unification, but Sohyang and her team expressed the idea musically. By the way, just to clarify... although Sohyang can sing gospel vibe amazingly and because of that some Koreans thought she wasn't a "pure" Korean, but she is and that she was a gospel singer doesn't mean she sings with gospel vibe. Koreans call it CCM (Comtemporary Christian Music) singer and for Korean CCM songs don't have the gospel vibe at all unlike Afro-American Christian Music. Korean gospel singer means Christian song singer. Thus, Sohyang sings songs in gospel vibe amazingly, but not because she was a gospel singer, but because she spent her youth in North America a little bit and picked up the gospel vibe. Anyway, thanks for your great reaction with a great appreciation of Sohyang due to your musical knowledge. Looking forward more of Sohyang reactions. I just want to suggest not to do all Immortal Songs series first, but mix up with I Am a Singer, Masked Singer and Begin Again series so that we all can savor her amazing talents deeper with WOW factor. Thanks.
👉“Arirang” is a Korean folk song, sometimes considered the unofficial national anthem of Korea. Arirang is an ancient native Korean word with no direct modern meaning. But it is the name of a Korean mountain pass. Nobody knows who made this song. Titles of different versions of the song are usually prefixed by their place of origin. At first, it was the song of ladies who had to send their husband somewhere. But it became a popular song when Korea was ruled as a colony by Japan in the early 20th century.
Wanna see things harder from So Hyang...? Like a singing MBA? Try the song Everyone - I would pay to see anyone of those called "Divas" in mainstream singing this song like her. Its just INSANE... believe me. ;)
Arirang Alone is a modern remake of a very old folk song. Instead of two lovers think about North and South Korea. Peace, then came war and the split, then the longing for reconciliation. The songwriter’s parents had to leave two sons and a daughter in North Korea during the war. His father’s dying wish to him was “when Korea reunite, go find your older brothers and sister and tell them that their parents did not abandoned them”. Where everyone in the audience sings along is where Sohyang incorporated the original Arirang lyric and melody.
If you want the most blow your hair back epic arrangement change you want Lean on Me. You'll lose it to that one. Mona Lisa from king of masked singer is rock epicness. Day Day from masked singer is rap epicness... seriously. Breathe and Home from masked singer are both magical head voice bliss. Misty from begin again is melt your soul jazz. It's silly good. Those right there are some top quality shit from here. Oh and Fate from I am singer. Half that audience is in tears on that one. It's just an absolute rocket. And heck she did perhaps the best I have nothing cover too lol. The stack is big but worth it as you ain't seen nothing yet till you get through them.
Arirang Alone was performed in 2015, and You Raise Me Up in 2018. Sometime between that, Sohyang started to have bouts of pneumonia. She was suffering/recovering from another case of pneumonia at the time she performed You Raise Me Up. She went up the stage against the advise of her doctor that she should not sing. Although You Raise Me Up is regarded as one of her best performances, I understand what you mean when you say that you were more impressed with Arirang Alone. I can't help but wonder what You Raise Me Up could have been, had she been in her perfect health.
👉 Kim Sohyang (called Sohyang) * 1978 in Gwangju, South Korea. She is self-taught and a real all-rounder. Sohyang comes from poor divorced parents. As a teenager, she converted to Christianity and planned to become a cartoonist and artist. Instead, she joined a band and married drummer Kim Hee-jun. She started singing late and has no formal vocal training, but since has had some lessons from Seth Riggs (American voice coach). Shortly after the wedding she had to have an operation and was told she could not have children. She was then 21 years old. She decided to devote her life to singing for God and the comfort and joy of people. She is also a fantasy novelist, gives singing lessons at the Music House Academy in her home town and is a guest speaker at a university. She made her singing debut in 1996. She only became known in 2012 through her participation in the second season of the Korean singing competition I am A Singer. Sohyang became the first Korean female artist to sing the American national anthem at an NBA game. After the huge success in 2017 in the "King of Mask Singer" (Korea), Sohyang’s appearances became less and less. She was struggling with severe pneumonia, which came back eight times and almost took her voice away. Sohyang, hailed as "Korean Mariah Carey" for her outstanding vocal skills, shared how obsessed she was. She didn't want to damage her reputation, didn't allow herself to make any mistakes. So when she was stripped of sheen, all she could do was repent and reflect on her Christianity. She realized that the most important thing as a singer was to comfort people about not being perfect. She rejects contract offers from major music agencies for reasons of belief (Sony Music in the USA). She says, "... I'm perfectly fine sharing my music on RUclips, which can do to tens of millions of people around the world without feeling stuck. Maybe that's why I was born around this time." Sohyang's vocal type is a lyric soprano, specifically a Full-Lyric Soprano. Her vocal range spans from D3 to A6 (supported range from G # 3 to E6), a total of 3 octaves, 3 notes, and a semitone. She is known for her emotive and powerful vocals, with characteristics being a homogeneous, rounded, and bright instrument of remarkable beauty and meticulous control. Even if she is not the most famous singer in the world but she is one of the best. 💥This woman is fire!!! The Greatest Belt Queen Ever!!!💥
Hi, thanks for your heartfelt reaction. As a Korean, let me tell you what emotion Arirang brings up to me. It is name of an imaginary hill, which evokes a mixture or conglromerate of such emotions as love, sadness, yearning and hope. It's something like you feel when one you love, say mother, brother, sister or lover, whoever he or she may be, went on a journey, fading out over the yonder hill. Now, sometimes looking at the hill, you miss him or her with yearning for reunite. But the reality is hard on you and wouldn't let you go for it. Still, you never lose the hope that you will be reunited someday, even though you don't know when it will be. That's Arirang.
Love your reactions! Please react to more Sohyang!! Please react to Big Mama Killing Voice on Dingo Channel!! 4 powerhouse Korean vocalists! You won’t regret it :) they have captions on the vid too!
I don't know what kind of grief the Korean broadcasters are giving you but usually a "copyright blocked" over the screen is sufficient. You usually don't need to also blur the video. At least that has been our experience with this issue. Of course, your mileage may vary! Ha, ha! Yes, our little sister Sohyang from South Korea is the greatest singer there is in our collective opinion! 😉👌💘
Sohyang's version of FATE is a lovely cover too. Fate was a popular song from a famous Korean movie because of it's story. Should definitely react to her live performance of FATE. May not top Arirang but still a good one. 👌🏻
This is an amazing video on Immortal Songs 2 of Kim So Hyang singing this beautiful traditional Korean song, there are songs where she literally makes many of us cry with so much passion and emotion you should check out songs like Hyg Me, and Where are You. Where are You ruclips.net/video/ekU5LHQ-ygg/видео.html Hug Me ruclips.net/video/SdkvAX2O7aU/видео.html I love Kim So Hyang but my all time favorite South Korean sing is Cho Yung Jin aka ALi I have her entire collection on my channel and have purchased her singles albums and EPs
'Arirang alone'... this song contains Korean people's sadness about national division of Korean peninsula and our earnest longing for the reunification... the lyrics in this song are mostly metaphorical expressions... For example, Baekdu and Halla are the names of the 2 highest mountains located northern and southern edges of Korean peninsula and Dokdo is the name of Ireland located on the eastern edge of Korean territory.

Maybe that's why I was born around this time."
Sohyang's vocal type is a lyric soprano, specifically a Full-Lyric Soprano.
Thank you for your detailed analysis and video sharing.💗💥
“Oh my god!….oh!…what!?” Lol
잘 봤어요~ :)
She’s easily the best vocalist in the world and I don’t think anyone comes close
💝💝💝
I believe that Arirang Hill is a place for everyone to meet when the N. Is freed and can be with the S. Koreans again. Lost loved ones basically.
Check her out doing Bridge Over Troubled Waters.
Your break down analysis is very teaching
You are better than any other people who have reacted Sohayng's songs 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

She's magnificent

여러장르에 수십곡이 있으니까요 ^^
Sohyang's version of FATE is a lovely cover too. Fate was a popular song from a famous Korean movie because of it's story. Should definitely react to her live performance of FATE. May not top Arirang but still a good one. 👌🏻
저는 소향님의 수많은 공연중 딱 한곡만 리액션 추천한다면 love is a many splendored thing 입니다

Sohyang- before and after ‘arirang alone’ cut

'Arirang alone'... this song contains Korean people's sadness about national division of Korean peninsula and our earnest longing for the reunification... the lyrics in this song are mostly metaphorical expressions... For example, Baekdu and Halla are the names of the 2 highest mountains located northern and southern edges of Korean peninsula and Dokdo is the name of Ireland located on the eastern edge of Korean territory.
korean traditional song
Send love to your reaction in 2023. Nov..
한국의 뛰어난 편곡자 황성제와 소향의 협업!
That string instrument is gayageum korean traditional instrument
She 's A.I
I apologize but I laughed out loud when you said they gave it an "asian vibe".. Struck me in the funny 🦴..
