Thanks again justin, you're doing amazing job, there's a lot of youtubers in sketchup tuturial, hard to understand, but as I said you're doing awesome, thanks again.
I just want to say that I really appreciated this video because I'm not a big Layout fan but it's something I need to learn. You demonstrated things that are possible that were not intuitive for me. I'd really love to see more like this, seeing how others work in Layout is a good way to learn, much better than trying to find out in manuals or forums etc. Thanks :)
This IS how I've been doing my details. It woks really well. It takes no time at all to sketch up a little model and import it just for detail. I really do wish there was a way to adjust line weights though. No matter how good they look. They'll never be perfect until I can get line weights the way I want them :( But it's working really well regardless! :)
That does still seem to be a recurring problem - you can adjust line weights, but only by bringing in everything as a separate viewport, which can be really frustrating. Thanks for watching!
i like all your video because I understand it very well. I want to suggest what I want you to do, for school purposes. I want you to draft simple water distribution system layout in sketchup 8. I am vey well thankful if ever you will do some tutorial for it. Thank You!
Very nice video, it gave me some good ideas. What I'd like to know next is how to do a zoom detail, where I have the main model in one viewport, then a circle drawn over a small section, and an enlarged viewport of the details of what's in that circle. It's easy enough to do by creating a zoomed in viewport of that smaller section, but I like the plans I've seen where the zoomed in section is actually circle in shape. I guess ultimately my question would be is there a way in layout to have a circular frame around a viewport? That would be very nice for a detail shot. BTW I do woodworking project plans, nothing architectural. Thanks.
Great video Justin. I like your insight into the deeper use of style for presenting a detail. Also I haven't used pattern fill at all but now I see quite a few good uses for it.
Justin, something I noticed when you dimensioned in layout that’s bugs the crap out of me. (Being used to the options in AutoCad perhaps) when you dimension vertically, is there a way to make the dim text default to horizontal. Doesn’t even need to be a default, just to be able to do it would make me a happy camper. Thanks
Two questions; 1. Are Layout drawings attached to a particular SketchUp model? 2. Can more than 1 SketchUp model geometry be used on one Layout drawing?
Justin briefly mentioned that "perspective models or elevations" can not be scaled, this isn't necessarily true, if it were you would only be able to use "2D" elements for such purposes as architectural plans, what your looking for and what Justin didn't mention this time was whats known as "ISO", an ISO "detail" or "elevation" displays all dimensions at scale, yes ISO looks I little wonky sometimes but its "acceptable" to planners and local councils (where planning is of concern) its also handy for contractors and developers (the builders!) because regardless of which line you lay the rule on = there still all to scale! (on a 3D model in layout). Is that how you'd describe this method Justin? Thanks for you videos dude! Can I ask if you would do a handful of videos specifically on scales? and highlight the issue layout has when switching from "perspective" (it looses the scale you had initialy). Thanks man.
True - you can add dimensions to perspective views that are accurate. I'm not sure I have enough material to do multiple materials on scales... Thanks!
It's a pity so many building departments still require plans to be in black and white. Color add so much to the clarity. I've had to try to develop a whole bunch of materials textures that look decent in black and white, and I'm not really happy with them.
Layout is hell for doing detailing for even a small job - like a house. ..the document gets so slow with more than a few pages, and the dimension tool is almost impossible to use as it grabs things behind the cut plane. I really hope they get their $%$# together in this regard. I give Layout a 1 out of 5 unfortunately.
I haven't done a ton of details with Layout - do you know if adjusting to a vector rendering style helps? I was also having some trouble getting the dimension tool to pick the right point...Thanks for the feedback!
I have to agree. I’ve used layout for a long time, and it is def getting better, but nearly every project that I give it gets way too slow. Like, 1998 slow. I don’t understand how others use it. I know Nick Sonder keeps his Layout documents to only a few pages each.
Creating a 3D details of the various building sections and intersection is good, but very time intensive. I have done this in several projects, but I find that inserting a 2D image from a detail library to be more efficient and cost effective to my clients. I think you should develop a Detail Library approach to your insertion of details into the Detail sheets often found near the back of one's construction document set. That may be a 5th way to include in your detailing and a bit more economical to Construction Document creation which is a 2D (Layout) manifestation rather than 3D. Thanks for your video, but it doesn't really work for me.
I don't disagree with your assessment if you have those details floating around. I was kind of operating under the assumption that this is for someone who doesn't have a pre-built library of details. If you have the details pre-made and sitting around somewhere, definitely just drop them in instead of re-creating them every time.
Hi Justin, I am having problems creating new pages in Layout. I seem to get the same view of my model in each new page, and when I change the view, all the other pages change to that view! ! Having searched for 'creating new pages in Layout', there is very little basic information about this. I have several elevations from a kitchen design I want to put into one layout file, with each elevation on a separate page...Can you guide me through the basic steps?
Hi Alan - I think what's happening is that your layers have the option for "Share Layers Across Pages" selected. That's the little paper icon on the right hand side of the layers section of your tray in Layout. This means that those layers show up on every page. Try clicking on the paper to the right of the layer that your viewport is on to change it back to current page only mode. Does that make sense?
I made a special dimension in the scrapbook, with no arrow in the center of the circle and manually adding the radius symbol. I thought I would find a simpler solution.
Hello. I'm currently having some issues when working with LO.. like after i changed the Stroke thickness, the Fill and Pattern button won't select and.. some keyboard shortcuts such as Esc, delete, ctrl+c, etc2 will stop working as well. I Really wonder if anyone ever encountered this. I've tried this on 3 PCs and all gave the same issue regardless of the versions. I have tried it on LO 15,17,18,19 as well. And of course i have tried reinstalled the program. The problem only fixes when i close and reopen LO which is not very effective since i'm currently working for a professional project. I hope someone could point out the fault i may be making. Thanks!
Based on the fact that you're having this issue on multiple different computers on multiple different versions, I have to assume this is something either having to do with your model or something having to do with your workflow. How exactly is the escape key stopping working? It kind of sounds to me like your viewport is just getting de-selected somehow...None of those keys would do anything if your viewport was deselected...
It's a matter of understanding the tool and using it correctly. I've used it on a complicated project of around 4000 sq. ft. over several levels and the it's been great.
It would be good if it were like Revit/CAD, probably be fairly involved though as cad uses layers to associate line thickness while I (hopefully correctly!) use groups with layer 0 entities but a layer for the group.
It would be 2 parameters added to each material in SU and options to display them in Layout. If Trimble expects SU to compete with other BIM programs this is simply a must.
Some friends of mine have been using sketch up for 2D drafting. To get the difference in line quality they don’t need to adjust the line weight, they just adjust the line colour - often just to various shades of grey. It looks great and has the same effect. Possibly is a better way to get variation in line quality because the lines are more consistent in thickness. The need to change line weight is just a hangover from drafting ink pen days!
After 6 years and here I am finding this video very helpful. thks alot.
Thanks for watching!
Cannot imagine how long that would have taken me to figure out on my own. Thank you very much.
Thanks again justin, you're doing amazing job, there's a lot of youtubers in sketchup tuturial, hard to understand, but as I said you're doing awesome, thanks again.

thanks man! i subscribed to your channel you diserve more than that!
Thank you Justin, yours video are always helpful and you are very clear during explanation. Please don't stop to teach us! THX.

cant you use colour and profile lines to define elements rather than line weights?

I realize I'm kind of off topic but does anybody know a good site to stream newly released series online?
@Benedict Skyler Flixportal :)
@Issac Kylo Thanks, I went there and it seems to work =) I appreciate it !!
@Benedict Skyler you are welcome :)
Thanks for your tutorial... Help me to make nice detail
Glad you found it helpful!

What do you think of skalp plug in?
Never used sketchUp's layout ever before....seems like I could use some in my life.
Lol - give it a try!
its amazing

Not just one - you just add viewports into whatever model you want to show from Layout

Thanks Chris!
Thank you very much
don't you use the outliner all the time? I notice in here everything on this model is a group.

raster is the fastest..vector is slower and the hybrid setting is slowest

Yes - excellent again !

Problem solved! Many thanks Justin....lots to learn in Layout, but sometimes the VERY basics get skipped over. You are a star!
Request skechup vertical garden
Terrific
Thanks!
Hi, would you have a trick to make the quotations of circle and arc of circle with layout? thanks
Quotations? Do you mean the dimensions? Why wouldn't you just use the dimension tools?
I made a special dimension in the scrapbook, with no arrow in the center of the circle and manually adding the radius symbol. I thought I would find a simpler solution.
It's all fun untill someone calls and askes for a dxf file for those details.
Doesn't Layout export DWG and DXF?

Everytime i start using layout is more frustrating to use it. If is a serious project i would recommend to avoid it.
You have to make sure to set your SketchUp file up properly if you want Layout to work properly...

I have a problem, my Layout doesn't import the style
I don't know what this means
SU really needs to add line weights based upon layer (or better yet, material) cut.
Possibly - I'm wondering if that might represent a fundamental overhaul of the entire system though - I assume it's not a simple change. Thanks!
Nope. Just additional parameters in Layout. A table which would add line weights to viewed and cut materials, ala Revit.
It would be good if it were like Revit/CAD, probably be fairly involved though as cad uses layers to associate line thickness while I (hopefully correctly!) use groups with layer 0 entities but a layer for the group.
