@@vatsalparmar5740 tardigrades are actually not very durable. They might have high resistance to a lot of crazy shit, but do you know what they can't survive? Getting crushed. Tardigrades are regularly killed in the 100s or 1000s by animals that don't even know they are there.

Yep in the Stadium and Colosseum games it's the animation it does when it's hit.
Shuckle is particularly based on an endolith which are microscopic organisms such as mold,bacteria,fungi, and amoebas that grow on various rocks and coral. Its juice-making abilities could also be a vague reference to aphids. So basically it’s a bacteria infected rock that eats berries and produces “honeydew” that resembles juice. Lovely
I was thinking barnacles, because barnacles secrete an acid/adhesive to stick to rocks.
@@transsnack I could definitely see that the only thing knocking against shuckle being a barnacle is that they are almost always found near water (disregarding the bug typing) and Pokemon already made a barnacle Pokémon in Gen6.
Never thought of the aphid connection before. Seems it's better adapted to its predators than durant is, having a rock type that has an advantage against ledian's bug type.

@@schizopenguin I could see shuckle being based off of a worm species of some kind, and I think the wiglett line more closely resembles a marine worm than an eel since it lacks both jaws and fins
johto dex has some of the greatest "just a little guy" designs in the franchise (furret and wooper come to mind as some of the greats, hoothoot and natu are great contenders too)

Shuckle is the pokemon I think of when I think of forgotten pokemon. Ironically, this has left me with a bit of a soft spot for it
I think Shuckle is decently loved for what it is. Sure, it’s no Charizard, but having the highest defenses with some of the lowest HP, attacks, and speed makes it a very iconic Pokémon. He also had the Berry mechanic back in gen 2 and plenty of people have made him more popular with memes like “Don’t fuckle with Shuckle”.
He might not be as loved as Greninja, but he’s not forgotten when you compare it to Luvdisc for example.
The little guy is famous for being capable of outputting the most possible damage in the game so everyone kinda already respects them a little

Yup, the proto sprite has a more jar like shell and Shuckle itself is closer to a snake. It also has more legs, or are they the tails of snakes that are dead and fermenting? Oof, no wonder they changed it. They discarded an evolution too, there's no sprite or name for it.
Shuckle is a top tier Pokémon and no one will change that. He doesn’t need an evolution, he’s perfect as he is.
As I understand, Shuckle is a mix of a barnacle and a barnacle scale (hense its bug type), with some turtle and clay pot mixed in.

Shuckle has 5 speed and 230 defence.
If you can pull off both moves, Shuckle becomes the fastest pokemon in the game with an attack stat leagues above any legendary pokemon.

Keeping in mind that power trick will give shuckle a base defense of 10 and base spec def of 10 you may want to put the opponent to sleep before starting this. (Or otherwise ensure shuckle won't get hit on the turn it uses power trick, which can be accomplished with baton pass)
Alternatively shuckle could just toxic stall you.
this very dangerous strategy can be shut down via Hustle Rattata w/ Quick Attack and Super Fang. it is the only mon that can stop it.

From the discovered beta, we've found that Shuckle originally was a snake-like creature living in earthenware pottery, rather than a shell, that fermented berries around it. This is probably supposed to be *snake wine*, which I would avoid looking up, a famous tradition of putting a venomous snake in a wine bottle for... reasons?
So at least originally Shuckle is supposed to be a Pokemon representation of snake wine. What it "evolved" into over time is anyone's guess. It even wasn't a Bug-type originally!

I think shackle is based off strawberry maggot that ferment the strawberry juice of the strawberries they invade yet instead of invading strawberries they invade rocks and ferment the berries inside their shell, which is what ancient brewers did by fermenting fruit in pottery
Shuckles one of my favorite pokemon that aren't based on any specific animals or myths. It's simple while being creative and unique and cute in it's own special way.
It's berry juice gimmick is also pretty cool.

I was honestly expecting you to really not like Shuckle. But, truly Shuckle’s magnificence knows no bounds.
I remember when a bunch more beta sprites were found, namely an old shuckle design that looked like worms in a vase, someone pointed out that it seemed shuckle’s design origin was… snake wine. I’m happy that the final product was a much weirder mix of things and the grim basis became much more obscured.
shuckle is based off snake wine. shuckle's beta design originally resembled a pot and the fermentation of berries in its shell is similar to the process of making alcohol.
Shuckle is a fun design, and one of the coolest things about Shuckle that the game devs should bring back was how he could turn held berries into berry juice.
Shuckle is basically the cameraman when u look at its 200 and monkey fucking 30 defense stats, like it just chills as not even God can hurt it

Shuckle is unironically one of my favourite Pokémon. I too think it's really cute and I remember getting one in Gen 2 by the NPC who scared it would get stolen. I nurtured it and really grew to love the little guy.
I think the strongest Pokemon designs are the ones like Shuckle's where it's not immediately clear what that Pokemon is, but still has familiar elements that direct our understanding of the design. It feels a lot more ownable than other designs where it's more blatant, like how Krabby and Kingler are just caricatures of crabs.
That's not to say Pokemon with more overt designs are unlikeable or anything. I love Dewgong for example despite it just being a large sealion, but I feel a lot of Pokemon could've been stronger if they played with the shape language of their sources of inspiration.
The "little guy that just wants to chill" factor also gets boosted by the fact that they have low attack and special attack stats but high defense and special defense. They don't wanna hurt anyone they just want to ferment berries in their shells and be high.
It also has the highest Defense and Special Defense of any Pokemon.

Apparently there's a type of insect that's an aphid/cicada relative called a tortoise scale insect, which is basically the barnacle of insects. I think it's a close relative of the bug people get red dye from, so all that explains its bug/rock typing, its vaguely tortoise-like appearance and its red shell. Not so sure what's up with the fermenting part, though. Apparently it's also part fungal endolith/slime mould? Definitely pretty cute, and a pretty unique design.
There is a myth about a magical slug that can dissolve/eat trough rocks, even entire mountains... and I personally believe that Shuckle is based on it

There used to be an old mechanic in Gen 2 where berries in your inventory would turn into berry juice at random if shuckle was in the party. I still don’t know why it did that, and then they never did it again

Shuckle is the absolute best Pokémon and it's not even close.
Facts aside, I can speculate a bit. Shuckle had an interesting story during development, being apparently based on a snake in a jar or vase. Its legs used to look funny, the vase had some holes for its legs to pass through and maybe allow Shuckle to move around? Maybe it got redesigned because such a creature would have it difficult to walk while also having to lift the vase.
Instead, we ended up with quite the unusual creature. With it being somewhat tortoise shaped, but not being a reptile and not an insect either. It could be a mold creature as the Pokédex categorizes it or maybe a molusk, the Bug type is no stranger to molusks anyway.
Interestingly enough, Shuckle was the first Pokémon to have an "ability". Well, a prototype at least. If given a Berry, it could turn it into Berry Juice. Though it's a pity that we didn't get to see that again after Gen 2.
Even more obscure, Shuckle may have had an evolution. Though it's unknown how much did such concept advance. In the end, it probably made little to no sense once they decided to make Shuckle a gimmick Pokémon.

As far as I know based on Shuckle's Gen 2 beta sprite design, it's actually supposed to be based on a Cobra in a Jar which makes me think of Snake Wine. This is where I believe to be some correlation as to why Shuckle is able to ferment berries with it's secretions

Fun fact: In gen 2, if you give a Shuckle a berry (while it’s at the front of the party) it has a chance of turning into berry juice after a battle. And if you let it keep the berry juice, it can turn into a rare candy.

I always thought Shuckle was based on a barnacle, just looking at it's shell shape and acidic grip.
Fun fact: if you give shackle an oran Berry (just Berry in Gen 2) it’ll eventually turn into berry juice. Let it hold the berry juice king enough and it becomes a rare candy

One of the theories I’ve heard of Shuckle that I really like, based on some of it’s beta sprites, is that Shuckle is snake wine, based on it’s shell formerly looking like a pot. Still, one of the cool things about Shuckle, to me, is it’s so ambiguous that it could be based on anything. Snake? Worm? Barnacle? Love the lil guy
I think he might be based on a tube worm. They're these wiggly little guys that latch onto the rocks on the ocean floor, similar to how shuckle pops out of his shell. They live near the termal vents ans have symbiotic bacteria inside their bodies that help them metabolize the smoke from the vents.
As a kid i was soo happy when i caught my first shuckle. Him and torkoal are my best buddies
