Caught Brian live about 6-7 years ago and the best part of the show was Brian at the piano playing this. He sounded fantastic and I teared up the whole song. Such a talented man. I'm glad he beat his demons. ❤

I think he also looks better here because he had lost weight, had cleaned and sobered up, and was on proper medication for his mental illness. So he probably felt pretty good at this time as well.

I remember when I bought this CD when it was initially released back in the summer of ‘88. I’m a huge Beach Boys fan. I was so excited to find out that Brian was releasing a solo album, but I was also nervous. I was wondering if Brian still had his magic. I never should have doubted him. I was in awe of the opening notes of Love and Mercy, and the magic lasted throughout the whole album. Love and Mercy is his signature song of his solo career. Well done, Brian.

It’s so interesting to hear an 80s Brian Wilson song. It was close enough in proximity to Pet Sounds Brian Wilson that it’s kind of the same person composing and expressing himself creatively, just using the tools of the time. (Cheese synths, sampled choral vocals, and big roomy drums). It’s fascinating to hear a Brian Wilson composition with these elements that normally sound ugly to modern ears, but he somehow managed to make sound beautiful.
I guess what I mean is, his more recent stuff was great, but it felt like in some ways he was looking back and doing Pet Sounds again, as a much older person with a monumental amount of history and baggage behind him. This feels more to me like he was focused on the present, and was only 20 years after his creative peak, which makes it a really interesting cultural artifact.
Brian has changed physically so many times in his life, here he looks a bit like Ray Liotta. By the way, awesome song, I discovered it with the Kennedy center tribute
