What might make a good list is imperfect games that could be improved with 'Redaction' homebrews. I could name a few like 'Street Fighter 2010' and 'Ice Climber' that could benefit from some minor improvements.

@NoDrinkTheBleach I honestly think there is a better, more scarier game hidden within it's assets, just adding an West/East Indicator while you are traveling the map would be ideal. Personally I'd ditch the map entirely, add some significant story elements. heck, could have been made similarly to Snatcher with some more refined run and gun/ platform elements like what were featured in the game.

I don't see the hate for Friday the 13th. There were some really bad flaws, but I would even say it's not even a bad game. It was an average game that is more than playable with some great ideas. Controls weren't bad at all either. The map was bad, but you can easily open the map and see which way you were going. I can think of easily 50 games that were worse.

I’m legit tired of people saying Friday the 13th is a bad game. I’ve been calm about it for a long time because of “to each his own” manners but fuck it. The only reason it gets the hate is a cause of the AVGN video and people inability to see it as it’s own game vs comparing it parts to another game. “The maps broken!” It takes a couple seconds to learn the orientation and you’re good. “The house battles feel like worse punch out”. There like 10+ boxers in pinch out and only one Jason. What do you want man. I love James and his content but the only reason he and all others have issues with this game is the fact that you’re all bad at the game. There I said it. You’re all BAD AT THIS VIDEO GAME!

I'll be honest, I think people overreact to Friday the 13th. It's not a good game, but it's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be.
Have Mark run around collecting everything you need, potions, a good weapon, and set up the camp councilors in certain cabins to monitor Jason's movement while Mark is collecting stuff. The kid's cabin can survive two attacks, so you can just ignore it for the first part of the game (if you are close enough to stop Jason, I would take the time to save those extra attacks). Once Mark is ready to kill Jason, find him on the map (don't fight him in cabins if you can), and just force him into the corner of the screen, and spam attack him until he runs away, immediately give chase to force him into another fight, rinse and repeat until he is defeated. Find him on the next day, force him into fighting on the map, and repeat the same process. Do it on the third day, and you'll win the game, easy. If you want to save Mark some potions and life, use the camp councilors you have positioned all over the place to force Jason into fights on the map (try to get a knife, but the rocks are just as effective) and do the same thing. If you lose anyone but Mark, you're fine, since he is the best character in the game.

Back to the Future definitely would for me. As a child I loved the movies so much, and for me the worst part about the NES game was the difficulty. Getting past the cafe was insanely hard as a kid, in fact I never managed to pull it off. And the worst part was if you lost you had to go back and play the previous level completely over again. So that made practicing the cafe a chore. And this was supposed to be the first level “boss”.
Since that part was so hard, I never got to experience the classroom scene, or the guitar part, or the driving at the end. And the shooting levels in between were definitely monotonous, and had nothing to do with the movies, besides the skateboard, which seemed more like a detriment than a power up. Why was there a bowling ball with pins placed randomly in the street? I hate that game so much.

i think action 52 has to be the worst by a wide margin just for the fact that it was $200 (~$400 in 2021 dollars). i don't remember if it was armake21 who had that game as a kid, but there has to have been more cases where some kid convinced their parents to buy action 52 & because of the cost they refused to buy more new games for like a year or something. imagine how torturous that has to be for a young kid. like uncanny x-men & dragon's lair are abysmal but they're still not so bad where a kid in the 80s couldn't squeeze a /little/ fun out of them. the only enjoyment a human being can get out of action 52 is by gawking at how unbelievably terrible it is in all aspects.

I think there are some games that are bad, but people can enjoy them because they are bad. For example, a game like Action 52 or Cheetahmen 2, they might be bad, but they are 2 games that you can laugh at with friends. Whereas a game like Where's Waldo is just bad. It isn't fun and you can't really laugh at it. Silver Surfer was a great game, just too difficult for most. A game like X-Men may be bad, but playing that on 2 player with someone who has never seen a game of that kind quality always generates some laughs.

I didn't think Silver Surfer was awful. I thought it was decent. It's a hard game. That's it. Does it make it bad? No. Why? I beat it twice and I thought it played okay. It's no Contra, S.C.A.T. or Gun Nac but it plays fine. For some gamers, they need to sharpen their skills if they want to beat some hard games.
Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde was #1? I thought it was okay. I liked the idea of it. It's not the best or the worst game on the NES. For now, I'll go with Where's Waldo because of how it works.

I think what makes a game good or bad comes down to a few factors. Playability and difficulty go hand-&-hand as these two can make or break a good game. Games like "Friday the 13th" and "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" could be better if they where ironed out to be more playable, where "Silver Surfer" just takes difficulty too high. I think they get a bad rap but always fun to talk about. The "X-Men" and "where's Waldo" are just unplayable! You wonder just how they made it to store shelves instead of scrapped.
It's always interesting to see what people put on lists like these, especially for the NES. There was so many titles it can be hard not to choose the usual suspects. I think with a bad list there is a definite line between playable and unplayable. Ones worth a look at and ones that just make you wonder how they made it to shelves! For every classic or good title there is an equally stinker for various reasons.
In the end I think everyone has their own opinion. I mean I'm not a big fan of "Battle Toads" as it's broken in places, but people still speak fondly of it to this day. I personally love the title "Mystery Quest" but it is a completely missed title no one ever speaks if!
Anyways, ranted enough, but love this topic! NES still one of the best!

Great discussion guys! Very good stuff! I certainly agree with most of the choices except for one of them. I actually have Friday the 13th as one of my personal hidden gems and this is coming from someone who HATED this game as a kid! I gave it a second chance recently and, once you really understand the nuances of the game (the map can be successfully navigated although I'll admit that the forest/cave areas can get a little murky). you've got yourself a very unique, original game that's actually quite fun (and intense!) In any case, I have thankfully not played several of the games that were mentioned in the Top 5. X-Men is indeed a terrible game and I personally thought that Hydlide was one of the absolute stink bombs for the system. Action 52 looks particularly dreadful though. I haven't played it and I probably never will...LOL.

I think everyone who has put out a "Worst NES Games Ever" list has been heavily influenced by AVGN and Seanbaby to the point where you're just going to hear the same 10 games over and over again, most of which were either licensed media tie-in crap, LJN garbage, or unlicensed games from gray-market shovelware sweatshops like Color Dreams and Wisdom Tree. I think that to get to the heart of the worst NES games ever, we either need to just retire those games from the conversation entirely or get more granular; maybe make lists like "Worst 10 First-Party Nintendo NES Cartridges (That Aren't Urban Champion)" or "10 Worst Arcade to Home Conversions" or "10 Bad Games that People Actually Bought Back in the Day (With Contemporary Review Scores from Period Gaming Magazines) Which Weren't Just Dredged Up from a ROM Library Years Later For Comedy Purposes."
