Been playing guitar for almost 5 years. Never been to a guitar class that wasn’t on RUclips. You taught me my first song, my second song, then the chords, then the caged system, and here we are. 5 years later and countless hours of practice, still learning from you dude. The guitar community can’t thank you enough Marty
It;s crazy how helpful this man is. And he does it for free. My ideology has always been that no matter how good the teacher is, you only learn when your mindset is right. This guy just makes you want to play and get into that productive mindset, probably because of his effective and clear lessons.
I know im asking randomly but does someone know a way to log back into an instagram account? I was stupid lost my password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me.
I’m my opinion, Marty is definitely one of the best guitar teachers, I’ve been learning from him for years now. Trying my hand at a bit of slide for the first time and I’m having loads of fun with it! And it’s because he makes it very easy to follow, without rushing through the details. I think patience is a strong sign of a good teacher. Keep up the great work Marty! :)
I learned more about slide just by Marty saying “use open E tuning” than I did from any paid course I ever took. Been playing for years and Marty is still my go to when I wanna learn something new.
Although it has been 7 years since you made this video, I wanted to let you know, it is still as helpful as it was the day you made it! I have been grappling with RUclips to find someone who can simply explain the slide without all the FX, trickery tricks, etc. This video did exactly what I was looking for. Thanks! I will be circling back as I build my slide technique in the days to come! Cheers!
Marty I’ve been with you for years now I remember you teaching me how to play a D chord, I just learned pride and joy by SRV. Now I’m learning slides, you are a legend don’t ever stop what you’re doing. I recommend your channel to so many new guitarists.
Such a great video. I have been playing guitar for about 38 years or so and I never really thought about slide. I was at the music store the other day to buy strings and my son saw a slide and asked me what it is. I told him about it and he asked if I ever used one and i said no, but I think its about time I tried so I bought one. I knew as soon as I got home which youtuber I would be watching to get some basic pointers. All you videos are great i have been watching you fort a long time keep them coming!
I heard a kid talking crap when I was noodling around at a guitar shop. I was old,all that gray hair.It was my sons pal all in fun.Just as this cute little sales girl walked over. I said “ I said “ Age brings one thing you young cats know nothing about” “ Disposable income to buy any guitar I want” She laughed,he turned red and shut up,
Just Rutland dude spongebobs blues is fucking intense.. there’s a reason it was chosen for arguably the most influential television show ever bc it’s just freaking good music.. I won’t lie I learned to play by ear as a kid messing with that catchy theme music🤷🏾♂️
I swear you are the first person who said put your fingers on the string behind the slide. Wow! That's a HUGE factor in not sucking at slide apparently because I no longer buzz.
Great lesson on blues guitar Marty, just started to play a bit of this now, so your tutorial here, will definitely help with my progress. Look forward to seeing another one sometime. Bill.
Marty, you are awesome! I've been playing for years, but never committed to it. I'd learn chords and bits and pieces of songs, come up with some riffs but never learned the fret board or any theory. So, I decided to learn one song..Master of Puppets. I watched your lesson on the daily and learned the whole thing. Today, I threw some new Ernie Ball 11's on my Washburn HB-35 and have a friend bringing me some wine bottles. I've never played slide, but have been a huge Derek Trucks fan and I love Ribs and Whiskey...whenever I see John Bell get the black Wash I know it's gonna be Ribs or Expiration Day. Seriously, bro, you have helped me get so much better. I still suck, but I'm improving and have committed an hour a day to play. I use your lessons daily and appreciate you, man! You're giving people a gift of epic proportion and doing it for free. Much respect!
Mute the best way you can. It’ll come to you what’s easier for you. Marty do you have to tune differently? Dam buddy I’m glad I found you. Not many musicians take female players seriously so I’m self taught over 30 years. ☺️
I have an old classical guitar that’s got a mangled up fretboard and the bridge is peeling off so the action is super high. Retired it as a slide guitar !
Hey there marty, I appreciate all the simplicity and the way you break things down... I am a drummer learning to play slide acoustic guitar. It's a struggle right now, but i'll get it....Thanks Zo
Duuuuuuuuuuuuude . . . . .. Your attention to detail is so helpful!!!!! Holy crud, you're just the right guy to teach this sort of thing!!! In addition to your many and various other endeavors (which I know you have, because I am a devout guitar player and an audio engineer (side gig, for which I am educated, with honors, of course . . . .) Please keep doing this!!!
hey marty, I’m learning slide right now because ive been getting really into the black crowes and other bluesy rock bands and wanted to know why some people put the slide on their pinky and how would you slide using your pinky instead of your ring finger. thanks, and you’re the best teacher on the platform :))
I’m not an expert, but what I know, the finger you put your slide on is pretty much preference, usually middle or ring finger. I would guess that they put it on their pinky because it’s a weaker finger for mostly everyone (and as Marty said, slide is a lighter touch); and then you would have your three strongest fingers free all in a row (which would make it easier to go to single notes or even whole chords, like the E chord, which uses the top three fingers). But, again, I am not an expert.
Having a lot of fun learning how to make music so far I’ve been learning slide guitar, guitar, harmonica, and a studio called fl to put it all in to and make my own tracks
I bought a book and tried playing slide back in 1976 and failed miserably in spite of being a good picker. Flash forward to now and though I'm sure I have vast room for improvement after once following along with you for way video I can now actually rock Hey Joe in open E. MARTY IS THE MAN!
In case anyone is interested in an even more rudimentary lesson, just know that the 2 most important parts to learn here is muting strings and not applying pressure with your slide. Learn it early bc the better you become as a regular player, the harder it will be to learn the smoothness and gratefulness of the slide
Hey Marty, you really are great guy! I dig watching your vids. You have a good heart and soul for taking your time to share your well rounded knowledge of guitar! Thank you so much brother!🎸🇺🇸
Chris Cote you should practice, it’s not an easy thing to accomplish. Different people get it right away and some don’t. Different strokes, understand?
Last video really messed me up. They told me to press down with it on the fret. Obviously it was wrong because I did what you said just barely grazing the strings works better. A lot better. Pretty good explanation.
Man slide guitar is hard as shit. Just got a slide and it feels harder than anything I've had to learn so far (guitar wise). I definitely thought it would be pretty easy haha. As I'm sure most people who have never done it think.
yea? sad you didn't get to try out his "wicked licks". reminds me of when someone says they can play harmonic, but just blow in every fuckin hole like Allan's morisetts.
Marty. Hey how some acoustic slide in d minor!!! Some basic chords and when and how to implement when and where to place the slide!! Please sir please!!
Man, oh man, Marty. LOL. Here I am using a Lexan pick and pushing that glass slide down hard making it sound like hillbilly thrash metal for a few weeks now. Enlighten me, sensei. ;)
hey Marty! great videos.... been watching for quite awhile now. They way you break your lessons down makes it very easy to pick them up. Always inspiring. Thanks for sharing your talents & inspirations
If I gave a song recommendation that I'm almost positive has a slide in it, could you make a video playing it? Or how to play it? It's not technically a song, it's an intro to an album, but it's so sick. I'm new to this slide thing but I picked one up a while back and I am so addicted to the sound of it.
I’m a complete beginner. 51 yrs old. Picked up the guitar when Covid 19 hit. And are ALL the chords created using the slide and not using any other finger of the left hand? (That would be awesome news cause it makes it easier for a beginner cause I don’t know that many chords yet). Thank you Marty for your awesome instruction and general demeanor 🙏
First question yes as it mutes the raddle feed back you get however it recommended to use your picking fingers as mutes when picking individual strings, and for your second question yes all cords are created using the slide since the tuning is in open E or E major I believe the if you were to move your slide to certain position on the fret board the you’ll get a B major cord

This is basically the same thing that happened to me - minus about 30 years of experience 🤣 cheers
Marty is the man, good teacher
All I heard was: "Buy a new guitar for slide."

You could also fold up a piece of paper or a business card and stick it under like the 1st or 2nd fret to raise the action
is there a way to lower it back to normal afterwards
Haiden Gerstner take the business card out lol
Does that really work?
Spring break w/ Marty, wouldnt have it any other way! haha
