Nice MRE’s, I do my own too. But I do a month worth of of each recipe. I also freeze dry the pasta too. Real MRE’s is everything in one pouch, you just add water and go. I have over 100 pouches of each meal I made. This is my main reason I got my freeze dryer. Hey you never know 🤷‍♂️

I like to swap tray #5 and #3 then #4 and #2 when I'm doing weight checks before I actually weigh them so I don't have to keep track of which tray is which. Saves me from having to label my trays. The bottom tray is your limper, middle of the rack yields me the best results.

I can’t imagine how wonderful that trip will be. Be safe! I really enjoy your videos. I’m still contemplating the freeze drier purchase. Just can’t justify yet. Thanks for sharing your knowledge so enthusiastically.

I’m definitely excited for the trip and everything we’ll get to see. Alaska is never a place I’d imagine I’d ever live in but it’s been such an amazing experience. We moved to Alaska in 1997. We came from Cherry Point Marine base in North Carolina. We drove 10, 000 miles, going to numerous states and places along the way to see family and friends and also some places. We never stayed in a motel, only with family or friends. We slept 1 night at a rest area in Canada (we wanted to quickly get thru Canada).
We drove to Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio (for friends, stayed awhile), Indiana, Illinois (family and friends, stayed awhile), Missouri (family), Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona (lots of family and friends, stayed awhile), California (lots of family and friends, stayed awhile), Oregon (friends), Washington state and then thru Canada to Anchorage. Our entire trip took about a month, 10,000 miles, 2 adults, 3 young kids and a full grown Akita dog in a Ford Aerostar van, with a cartop carrier, bringing along the things we needed to live with until our belongings got to Anchorage about a month after we got here.
It was a crowded trip, great fun and memories for us and our kids for a lifetime.
We gave each child an allotted amount of money, to spend along the way (no candy, we bought candy/junk food for them). They loved having their own money. We took lots of pics (still have the physical photo albums of the trip). 27 years later, they reminisce about our trip. I did research before we left about some places to go. We also stopped at familiar places from our past along the way.
    It was a amazing trip!

What an amazing trip that sounds like it's full of memories that will last forever! I hope we have a similar experience. I'm glad you loved it even back then. Love the idea of giving kids some money to buy some souveniers they would be so excited for that. I should have them start doing some work to earn road trip money, that would be a great motivator for them!

Why don’t you do it with the rice and pasta in it? Just curious as I hope to do that when mine arrives. Good luck on the family trip sounds awesome, if you’re going through my country in Alberta up through Banff/Jasper ect definitely some nice places to see.. depends on route your going

    • @DIYfreezedry
      @DIYfreezedry  3 месяца назад +2

I wanted to be flexible with what I end up putting these meats/sauces on... and save space in my mylar bags. But you totally can add the pasta or rice to your meals. I have done an MRE with noodles before and it turned out great. I haven't freeze dried any meals with cooked rice in it yet but I should try next time!
We do plan on taking the route through Jasper/Banff - it sounds like that's a beautiful drive! So I don't want to miss that.

@@DIYfreezedry makes sense, I want to have like stir fry freeze dried so hoping rice does good. Our machine will be here next week so that’s exciting.
That is a beautiful route, Jasper and Banff both have nice things to see but it does get busy in tourism season. You will be coming through my town just northwest of Jasper called Grande Cache. If it close to when you are needed to camp a night I recommend Pierre Greys Lake it’s quite, beautiful place to stay. They have first come first serve sites, could recommend a couple nice free locations too.

With all my road trips and trips I’ve been on when I was younger and my Dad had rented a Winnebago, I can’t say I’ve ever taken the trip between AZ and AK. Tons of trips with the family MN to MX, a couple MN to OR and back but I was younger then and didn’t pay attention to anything outside the camper.
My own road trips have been round trip MN to Fredonia NY, MN to Atlanta GA, and separate trips MN to NV in 1987 and returning in 1993. My road trips I was busy driving and mostly at night when there was less traffic. Sorry I’m no help here.
Now it occurred to me that your father-in-law has checked out the camper which suggests he lives nearby (and maybe is holding it at his place?).
How about instead of flying with all those meals, you ship them to “yourself” at his address?
This way you can make several shipments and load the camper with tons of MREs, and you don’t have to worry that the airline may open your luggage wonderIng what all the metal inside is,
Feel free to actually “shout out” my Handle if you mention this in another video, like you did the mats but just calling me a “viewer.” I don’t just view your videos, I’m also a subscriber, 👍😁

I’m so sorry - I totally should have mentioned your name next time I will! Still figuring out RUclips lingo, but I’m gonna do better. I appreciate my subs and all the comments and tips I get and need to give credit.
And yes my father in law lives where we bought the camper so good idea about shipping the food instead of dealing with baggage I may end up doing that if I need more luggage space for clothing and whatever else we’re bringing. Sounds like you’ve done alot of road traveling - I hope to be able to travel more of the lower 48 once we’re done with Alaska. So many places to see

With meat products, you need to weigh them put them back in and do two more hours.. then them and you will find you have to do additional for more hours it’ll be at least 30 hours for meat products
Oh, I forgot reverse your trays. The bottom one goes to the tray above it that tray above it goes down to the bottom one and same with the top two reverse. The trays is very important because the heating is not the same.
PS how are you going to travel on an airplane with that food? They don’t normally allow it check with the airlines first, because they might dump it. ! They don’t know it inside those miler bags
