"A real man's air compressor"?? Seriously? Its a freaking single stage. Try getting a 3 stage with 10hp and 120 gallon tank! THAT'S A REAL MAN'S Compressor!!
I have the same compressor...actually rebuild it, new piston rings, valves, tank check valve, pressure switch, low oil level switch and add a automatic drain at the bottom...champion/Gardner Denver are good compressors!!
I have a real compressor. I have 2 Champions , an 80 gallon and a 120 gallon, both with the R15 pump and 5 horsepower motors . But the real compressor is a Saylor Beall model 9000 with a 15 horsepower Baldor motor. It will fill the 200 gallon tank from 0 to 175 psi in 4 1/2 minutes. Now that’s a real compressor ! I still like my Champion compressors though . They last forever.
Hi I bought a new saylor-beall. Compressor..all American build like champ.. Runs a lot quieter..what u can do to get the same result add a 5 in pipe to raise your air filter..higher..it should make a little more quieter.when running.or run it out side through the wall ..you,l also get fresher ,cleaner air..too. my dad did that on his ..big difference. Even if u paint cars ..it's even better..let us know if u do this..and how u feel ty great video
I just bought an identical Advantage 5 HP 80 gallon compressor off Craigslist. Of course it has a 3-phase Boldor so I need to change it to a 1-phase. I figure I will need to invest about $550 for a motor. Judging the outside condition I think I've got a good deal. I brought it home in an utility trailer and then hoisted it off all by myself. It is around 550 lbs.
Is that 3/4" soft copper between the tank and pump? If yes, where'd you get it? For the life of me, I can't find any soft metal tubing with a 3/4" ID. Also, how many amps is your Square D pressure switch rated for?
It is a red brass 3/4" pipe nipple. I got it at Home Depot. My pressure switch is 140 PSI on and 175 PSI off. It is a Square D pressure switch. I had to adjust it a little.
@@MattsShop You must've gotten the copper before C19 messed up supply chains cuz I can't find 3/4" copper anywhere. Also, I can't find any amperage ratings for Square D P Switches, and being an electrical device, I'd think they would be required to list that kind of info as not knowing those limits can cause a fire and catastrophe.
Matt I'd just like to hear your thoughts on an issue, seeing as how you're well ahead of me. I have a 200V/208V running on 120/240V residential power, and small fuses are blowing on the electro magnet, and won't start. I know it'll probably be costly to correct the issue, any Ideas?
I have a 240 Volt motor running on 240 Volts. The little fuses are called "heaters". I had to size mine well over the rated current draw of the motor because the Full Load Amps (FLA) will trip them if you don't. The motor draws a lot of current when starting. The National Electric Code allows for sizing well over 100% of the FLA draw of your motor. You can call an electrical supply house, and they can calculate what size you need for your setup. I'm not an Electrician, or giving electrical wiring advice. This is just what I figured out worked for me.
@@MattsShop Yes I will contact an electrician to further learn, but that advice gives me confidence of a workable solution to an issue I've just run across. Thanks
Need a belt guard to complete ..vary nice set up..I'm eather get a champion or a sayor Beall compressor..5hp. 2 stage sayor Beall is all American iron..just a little more in cost...nice video.. helpful. Ty ..😃...love your unit...it sounds good..your air reg ..u have ..that little hole will bleed air when u turn down your air it's supposed to do that.....I have an Alemite brand ..on line store..a filter -reg...and a regulator unit both have pressure gages..so I can adjust. The 1st one to 125...then the other to 95 p.s.i...I used black piping..in my home shop..I liked u used a drip leg...mine befor the filter ..units..I have a automatic tank drains on my comprsoir..with a pre-filter coming off my after- cooler ..then to the tank..factory..ordered..due to the fact in in hot sunny FL..I get no water in the air tank..vary little ..this is an option Saylor-beall air comprsoir co..offers..il get some video out. Soon as a demo..again great video..Matt.
Residential power is 120V/240V Single Phase. Commercial power is usually where you see 200V/208V (and sometimes 240V) Three Phase. Matt has single phase so 230V is really the only motor voltage he can run for a compressor that size.
8 gauge is not more then enough for 7.5 hp you would want 6 gauge.you should really be running 6 gauge anyways.a 50 amp breaker won’t protect 40 amp wire if a issue occurs the wire will potentially catch on fire and or melt insulation and damage your electrical equipment potentially even the contactor
I forgot to show this compressor running after I fixed it up LOL! Air tools in the description!

Awesome, sounds like you did as much work to yours as I did to mine.
Hi Matt, can you please show a close-up of the setup of the two drain hoses making connection to the underneath of the tank. Thanks.
Send me an email mattsshopofficial@gmail.com and I will

Nice! You can get a 1-phase off of eBay for cheap. I'd sell the 3-phase to pay for the other motor.

Wow. You did a really nice job fixing and doing all the pipe and electrical work. It sounds pretty quiet? It really is in person?
Can you recommend a good 2 stage air. Compressor for a backyard mechanic that does alot of sanding? Thank you
Champion or Quincy 5hp or 7.5hp but they are not cheap.
Thanks!
You bet!
Awesome I’ll post my build when I’m done, very similar but hope it can compare….

Somebody else took it off when I bought it.
It’s got a guard! It’s turned towards the wall!
And I bought the Saylor Beall at a surplus dealer for $ 1,299 !
Nice! That's an awesome deal!
The question is, why would one need a 230 volt compressor motor vs a 208 volt, for basic home/shop use, if both motors are 7.5 hp?

208 is 3 phase(typically commercial )or a phase converter and 230/240 is single phase(resi)
What did you fixed and how much it did cost you!?
It was like $600 and I put another $600 into fixing it, hose reel, paint, parts, electrical contactor, and expensive brass pipe fittings.
You have a pretty nice compressor set up there, but it`s too bad you didn`t insulate and finish your garage FIRST!
Good point!
If you don’t have as big a compressor you not a real man 😤😎🤪
I have a Saylor Beall model 9000 on a 200 gallon tank, 15 hp Baldor motor . Now who’s the man ?
Good old belt driven 5 hp, it will last forever.
Yea, this motor is old school!
👍
How dii on I change oil please
It's got a drain plug cap at the bottom of the air pump.
How much oil does it take?
💪👍💯
