I have been wanting to get my hair cut for weeks but didn't know what I wanted or how to go about asking. I then saw this video and as soon as you showed the head with the haircut from extraction I wanted that one. So I went and showed them pics from the movie and told them what you said. and now I got a sweet hairstyle. Thank you so much!
The problem is that salons are like a restaurant without a menu, where you go in and have to do your best to describe what you want, and you almost never end up with it, because the result depends on your ability to describe it and their ability to interpret and deliver what you've said. Then if you take a photograph, the stylist complains when people take photos of men or hairstyles that the stylist feels wouldn't suit the person, and then they end up giving them a different style which the customer feels unhappy about. It's a tiring process for everyone. So hairstyles don't have names? That's not the customer's fault - hairdressing and barbering industry, make up names for styles or elements of styles (not just number 1, 2, 3 for length!) or put up photos or have books with models with labels for the styles or elements of styles so people can look through the book with you and choose them, rather than them having to try to find a good photo of Thor on their phone and show it to you, or you putting old copies of GQ and Vogue in the waiting area and them desperately trying to find a model in there with a style they can then point to! It's a two way street - make it easier for customers, rather than trying to expect them to describe styles using the terms or language that stylists have been trained to learn. Bonkers situation that everyone hates!
There are names for hairstyles and in a lot of the barber shops I’ve been in have photos you can point at of haircuts. However I agree with your point that there is a communication issue between the customer and the barber.
From my experience there are just barbers that simply do not comprehend. I remember a barber who did a great job on my hair the first time I went but when I went there a second time it was nothing like what she did the first time. I recently went with someone not so long ago who completely understood what I wanted but for the most part there are just barbers who do not fully comprehend.
