How reality TV shows cast the right people

- How do you find the perfect person for a reality show? We spoke to the casting director for Queer Eye (and a ton of other shows) to find out.
Danielle Gervais is the Emmy-winning casting director for Netflix’s Queer Eye (and she and her team are nominated this year as well). In addition to the hit series, she’s cast everything from Pawn Stars to Wife Swap.
Vox’s Phil Edwards spoke to her about what it takes to find the right people at the center of each episode: the “heroes” that the show’s core cast give a makeover (or, in Danielle’s words, a “make better”).
It’s not just her and her team sitting in an audition room. After hashing out story themes and location for the new season, they’ll hit the ground in their new setting (in normal circumstances) and try to find the perfect people to feature on the show. Extensive interviews and background checks help finish the project - and the result of all that hard work is an hour of seamless entertainment, with a perfect star at the center.

This piece does a good job of showing how reality shows are not particularly "real". They're preconceived and cast as much as scripted shows with a much lower bill for talent. Why pay actors when you don't have to?
Reality is never attractive or watchable. Otherwise people would pay attention to their own lives.
@@imacg5 Of course it is. It's just that just some moments of life are
@@imacg5 what an egocentric comment do u really thin reality tv isn't popular kuwtk is one of the most popular shows on tv
ariel but it doesn’t bring in views and hasn’t for years. Real Housewives, specifically RHOA actually has more viewership and brings in more revenue
Yas🔥
i love how everyone in the comments are noticing the immaculate editing
It's not editing. It's motion graphics. Very different.
Yes, that is indeed me in the thumbnail. How’d you get that?
The commitment!! ❤
😂
Wow the winner of a "putting effort into a video" award goes to Phoebe yeet
Why’d u change ur profile pic
@@mae896 because yeah
Editor went ham on this... the single tear at the end pushed it over, made me chuckle
It's not editing. It's motion graphics. Very different.
When the couch was zoomed in and the music went "cant get enough of it"it made me smile lol
Whoever did the graphics / editting on this one really nailed that “Searching” style. Its really well done and fits the content great!
Stealing from Joseph M.'s comment, but props to Story editor: Bridgett Henwood, Art director: Estelle Caswel
YES!
this was comment i was looking for
@UC1jWysZtnG4JBfO02EkQjog Why are you bots everywhere :(
As a motion graphics designer, I can't imagine all the time that went even BEFORE the videos were made; it takes some time to create the UI elements to make this animation style.
@@sayrith Thanks! I did it a mix of a more legit way and super janky way. Hopefully if we do another of these I'll make a template or something and iron out the wrinkles!
This really shows that “unscripted television/programming” is a more accurate term than “reality television”.
It is scripted. I was a writer for a reality show.
@@joeybaseball7352 obviously you can't speak for every show. There are more than enough unscripted reality shows
@@MaxxiTv all reality shows have writers. Even if it isn't "scripted." All the lines that Ryan Seacrest says on American Idol, or Tyra says on Top Model, someone wrote that. They are reading off of a teleprompter.
@@joeybaseball7352 so having a host saying scripted things leading through show means it's not reality anymore?
@@MaxxiTv Editing also matters. A lot of reality shows will be edited to tell a specific story, even if the story is different from reality.
Editing the medieval paintings in a 2000s computer graphic way was SOOO creative!!
16th century is not medieval.
@Riyan Sita I'm sorry I'm like that on the internet sometimes.
@@LaFacedera I was thinking exactly the same thing, hahahaha

Who edited this?? They did such a good job, the video is so much more entertaining in this style
i know right !! give that person a raise👿👊💗
Everyone, I swear I did not pay ProxyMoron to say this.
It's not editing. It's motion graphics. Very different.
Allen Natian bruh
Phil Edwards 🤝🤝🤝
I love the editing style. I have never seen anything like it before.
Story editor: Bridgett Henwood
Art director: Estelle Caswel
Yeah, it was clever and inventive. :)
Check out the movie Searching - its a great story and has a very similar style
Let’s face it, Total Drama Island is the best reality show out there. *I have spoken*
You truly have spoken.
yes
😀😂 I honestly forgot about that show but it was entertaining
*and you're correct!*
For sure
So they're really not gonna talk about deliberately casting toxic people...
Thats the whole point
What show are you talking about specifically? There's almost always a villain role in every reality show. Even Simon once said, "every show needs a villain, so I say yes."
Joey Baseball big brother...
Yeah, I wish they would talk about the process. To get into Real World, you had to go through a process that involved psychology experts. You HAVE to have the correct personality for the interactions the producers want. They never seem to like to talk about that part
That frenchtuck.gif on the corner was gold
haha and the image below it titled yass.png just made me laugh because that is exactly how i name all my images when i just don't know how to name them.
How to make a visually interesting piece during corona times
yess
I just hope the editor gets a raise, he certainly deserves it

"Rootable" means something very different in Australia.
What does it mean?
;)
“Rootable”??? In Australia that means, literally, fnckable...
I was on one of these reality shows. They really do ask a lot of questions. And theyre so aggressively friendly, you can't help but open up to them.
Droopy mustache guy is my hero
Well, except for all the murders.
"Rootable hero"
All Australians rn: :|
So true. On all levels.
???
@@SD-hs2pk So....
How movies pick up songs for their soundtrack ?
a question we all need the answer to
Good question because vox should do a video on that topic too.🤔
Every Frame a Painting had a video on this, if I recall correctly. Really interesting.
The music supervisor is the one who picks the songs - they work within a budget for the production.
When you come to Australia, you should find a different word than Rootable. Just a suggestion from a friend.
Was looking for this comment 😂😂😭😂😭
Indian Reality Shows : I'll pretend that I didn't see anything.
thats entire Indian TV in general
@@r.h.6249 Sad Reality 😒
Vox has a nomination for Outstanding New Approaches: Arts, Lifestyle and Culture at the News and Documentary Emmy Awards for "We Measured Pop Music's Falsetto Obsession." Based on the comments to this video, I wouldn't be surprised if this video earns a nomination in that category next year.
"Rootable" has a different meaning if you're in Yass just fyi 😂
yass nsw?
Aussie slang effable
What's that?
what does it mean?
Love the "FrenchTuck.gif" and "Yass.png" files in the corner. Great references.
The best reality TV show contestant has to be Raj from Hell’s Kitchen.
Nah, Adam Lambert is.
why are people disliking the video? just because you didn't like or agree with some of the things these people said doesn't make it a bad video? it's still interesting and educational
I am amazed by the production. How even in lockdown you can be so creative and make such great content.
This was pretty interesting. It just goes to show how much goes into making "tv-friendly" content. Making something authentic for tv isn't as simple as it looks.
Please do a video about the Bulgarian protests. We want to know more! 🙏🏻
@hawrang tai And that's the problem 🙂
@hawrang tai maybe they will when Russia gets them in their fold
i love how they formatted this interview so fun
This was a super cool and interesting look behind what goes into shows. There's so much more to know obviously, but this was so eye opening!
I fit every role yet I never get called, wonder why
Coach Steve Steve was by far my favorite casting choice
Who’s the artist of that “Droopy Mustache” man? His artstyle looks familiar
I could be wrong, but my first guess is Rembrandt
It's Anthonis van Dyck.
Interesting. Definitely confirms my decision to limit my "reality show" viewing to "What Not to Wear" and "Something Borrowed, Something New".
When the lady says they will often do a 10 year sweep of a potential contestant’s social media, do these companies have access to deleted posts and things like that? Like can they get in touch with Facebook/Instagram or Twitter and the like and get access to everything someone has ever posted? I know social media companies keep a lot of info on users and even though from the public perspective your posts are deleted I’m assuming something is kept on the backend...?
Nope, that violates privacy laws
Super awesome to learn about the production side of reality shows!!! I always wonder about casting specifically, thanks for this!!
Incredible editing! loved how this was shot and put together!!
today, on I've Been Scrolling RUclips Way too Long:

I haven't really seen one all the way through since Survivor S2 and I'm not huge into TV in general, but this is far more interesting than any reality show I've heard pitched recently.
I love the editing of this
It's not editing. It's motion graphics. Very different.
@@sayrith You must be fun at parties
I was on a reality/game show (Fear Factor) several years ago. It was an interesting process going through the casting process with them. I definitely wonder what types of conversations were had about me.
Season 6 Ep 19, if you want to know
Was it the good fear factor with Joe Rogen or the bad MTV one?
@@joeybaseball7352 Joe Rogan. It was the last season before it went on hiatus, back in 2006. There's a video of it floating around here: search on 'Fear Factor Blind Date'
Internally contestants are basically considered a 'good' not a person. When you still felt like you were treated specially then they did a good job
Was never early for a Vox video, but this time is my 1st time I did lol
Gosh, Vox videos are always very well edited, but this one was particularly fantastic!
I love how they are referred to as “heroes”
love the editing on this one :)
It's not editing. It's motion graphics. Very different.
@@sayrith There's...both though. They're both in there... what was your point?
whats the song used at the end?
i no longer have any concept of what the word "hero" means.
in this case, they mean protagonist i think
Reality shows are like realistic version of gta5 where everything feel extra real...
Love the editing of this video. Making a video call look interesting. Well done.
impossible to find the music listed in the credits
"Antoni taught him how to Microwave soup"
I'm dead.
The editing on this was top notch!
Does anyone know what did they use for editing ?
Honestly I wish this covered the trashy side of reality TV, which this casting agent has done as well.
They pick people that barely pass psych evaluations because they know it will cause drama.
most of people probally shocked that its real and not scripted but also most of people thing it is scripted
When I learned this about MTV Real World, that just killed it for me.
Love how this episode was produced!
I wish reality shows could actually be real
10/10 editing, and yes i know everyone commented that but again, 10/10 editing

Anyone knows the song that starts at 7:07?
Can y’all please do a piece on the designers and editors that work for y’all?
My brain sees the "map" of Yass on the side and immediately thinks of a MYASS sign there.
The editing is amazing!
What's the intro song please?
Woah, time flies fast. In just 44 minutes, they just gained 7k views
Bring back BORDERS please!
I would hope doctors are the ones casting people. I don't want a TV show host to fix my broken arm, especially if their not medically trained.
Who ever edits these videos needs a raise
Please, bring back Borders
“Droopy-mustache.jpg” 😂
The editing is amazing but that zoom presentation makes it a bit tiny to watch on mobile
Interesting video. Great job with the edition, it made me laugh a few times
Can you please allow Johnny to use the Borders 3 footage if you guys aren't going to release it?
Can we discuss diversity in casting because....
I'm thinking of no neck Ed watching this...
I'd rather want to see how classic tv shows cast the right people
U don't u guys make a video 'bout how u guys make a vox video?
Every time I see reverend Noah’s face I cry. I love him
Now we are on the another episode of "Quarantine lead us this way"

Thanks for calling it what it is. People are calling it "editing". It's motion graphics.
This video is well done. Love it!
Great Content Vox! Big supporter of the channel!
Okay but why I am the happy face
Can she give advice to Robyn Kass, who casts BIG BROTHER?
is ur computer a macbook pro or air?
How do I get involved in this line of work?
Australians here have a different idea of what constitutes "rootable"
Rootable means something very different in Australia
A solid reminder why I don't waste time watching reality TV!
Someone give that editor a raise
