Doctor Settles The "Shower Daily" Controversy

  • Comments from celebrities like Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Dax Shepard, Kristin Bell, Jake Gyllenhaal, and many more about whether they bathe themselves or their kids every day have landed them in hot water... or some of us would hope, at least. Let's settle this once and for all. How often should you shower? How long should you shower? Is bathing necessary? How frequently. There is an answer! #shorts

Hey Dr. Mike! So if I've been over-showering for decades (lack of knowledge) and now my hair is very greasy every day and I threw many expensive pillows for that reason... should I keep washing my hair every single day so that I don't throw my pillows or I can reverse this condition somehow?
Also, warm water actually relieves my dry eyes a lot, not a fan of cold water, sadly.

Showering when you have POTS is hard. Dr Mike, I would really appreciate it if you talked about POTS (Postural Orthosatic Tachycardia Syndrome) as many people, including medical professionals don't know about it. And how the symptoms go further than just dizziness, fatigue, and fainting and elevated heart rate. Issues like digestive issues, tremors, etc.

Get a shower chair! Or just put a folding chair in there. There is no reason to feel embarrassed about needing accommodations! I use a shower chair because of my POTS and other health conditions bc it's so difficult and I've landed in an ambulance a dozen times from passing out and hitting my head I'm the shower (yay POTS).
ALSO keep those hospital shower wipes and no rinse shampoo around for days that are too hard for bathing! Accessibility!

As someone with eczema and hypohidrosis, I feel absolutely vindicated in my thrice weekly shower routine, except for the 3/4 minute part lmaoooo. I do try not to make the water too hot, but it takes me 15 minutes to shampoo/condition/throughly clean my body, then I spend another 10 minutes in a bath with oatmeal and oil to put all that good grease back on my body that I just took off lol. Otherwise my skin comes out itchier, drier, and rougher than it was before I got in. At that point I might as well not even shower.

Fun fact: when my sister was a baby, my parents washed her all the time (once every day). One day, They noticed she was getting red, dry, cracked skin. They panicked and took her to the doctor immediately. Turns out, they had been washing her too much. Her skin was being washed and therefore was being stripped of oils, which made her skin dry and cracked, which caused irritation and redness. Some people aren’t meant to shower daily. In fact it can really hurt your skin to do so. I have sensitive skin, and I opt for short showers with no soap or anything most nights, but wash with soap a couple times a week. My skin feels way better than when I washed with soap and water every day.

Now i just go bath if i have time for long washing and i feel like hot water. Sometimes i dont. If you live in cold climate and hair is dry like mine you dont need to wash out much sweat. Hot days of course are different - quick showers, bit cold, even three times a day. It takes a few minutes to do all you need, without horrible getting wet too much - everything is washed. Hair in my case takes longer if i need to wash it. Cold water closes the hair so its usually semi warm shower and hair washing ends with cold. But when i feel sick, need like proper warming up or want to feel im super clean - i make a bath and in time i make it pretty hot tho i need to be able to adjust. I have adjusted my shower schedule to 1-2 times a week and it’s been so good for me. I have fine hair that shows grease very easily but since showering less, my hair doesn’t over produce oils to make up for a lack of moisture so it’s less greasy now! I also use protective styles for it when I don’t need to look amazing. And my eczema doesn’t flare as often either! Now this is a good shower schedule for me because I just don’t smell very much if at all even if I’ve been sweating a lot. It might not be for you. Experiment and find out. He’s right kinda about the long hot showers….. however when your hair is long it just takes longer than “3-4min” for only rinsing shampoo out let alone the conditioner… yeah sure if you’re just washing the face/body 5min ish works fine, but when your hair length reaches the underside of the butt cheeks … washing that much hair just takes time! And anyone who has or has had longer hair knows if you try rushing that process it’s either not thoroughly rinsed or it’s impossible to brush it when you get out of the shower

It's almost like there are a ton of factors that go into this stuff. During the winter with -35C weather, with a sedentary lifestyle, I can go weeks without a shower and be presentable. If I'm going to the gym, or it's the dead of summer and 35C, well, that changes things and I generally need to shower daily or at least once every other day or so.
Likewise, I don't get people that insist you have to shampoo every single day. Shampoo dries my hair out and makes it frizzy, and most days just using water to clean it is way more than enough to get any grease out.

Also, for dry hair, leave in conditioner is your bff... because the kind you rinse off only works slightly and sometimes can cause buildup. Its individual. Thank you Dr. Mike for finally speaking sense on this topic. I live in India where its right now 33 degrees celsius outside with about 58% humidity. You're gonna get sweaty and greasy by sitting in a chair so basing your showering regimen on what someone in the US does would be asinine.

Honestly, India (especially the central and southern areas) can be like that.
I remember doing nothing but sitting on the bed and watching TV all day, and I still got sweaty.
