Hit box is probably really small, but what I think he does to is slow the game down and have an auto save state so that he can reload from basically anywhere.

I suck at bullethell shooters but if I see DoDonPachi I'm playing the hell out of it. To me it's Cave at its finest.
One of the few bullet hell shooters that I like and its array of bright colored bullets and explosions will distract ya if you don't pay attention.
Wow the graphics are so good on this one.
