How far can the Tesla Model 3 Highland really go and what does that cost?

  • Our new Tesla Model 3 Highland is out to work this week and this is the first long trip in it as part of our daily duties.
Firstly the school run and town driving and then a longer trip to Chichester and Dartford so a real mixed bag or roads and driving conditions typical of many a UK driver.
So with over 300 miles to do. What is the actual real-world range of this new Tesla. Tesla claim over 400 miles. It shows 342 miles at 100%. But what can it really do?
We put it to the test as we go about our normal duties anyway.
This is in “chilly” conditions, not sub zero but cold enough to have heater on all day, music on, multiple passengers and driving at speed limit. Really NOT trying to be efficient, just driving it as it is.
What’s the efficiency and how far can it REALLY go?
Watch the video to find out..!

You will probably get used to it pretty quickly, depending on your age and willingness, we took a new Model S for a test drive some months ago when my Model 3 was in service because it needed a new charge port since it was broken and wouldn't charge, and I gotta say I was one of those people who said they don't want no stalks, I still would prefer stalks, but it's not as bad as I thought it would be, sure it takes some getting used to but overall it is quite alright, Model 3 HL is said to have better haptic feedback for the blinkers so they will be fine, once people get used to it.

I was previously a field service tech, living in South East London, covering London, Kent, Sussex, Surrey, down into Hants, occasionally as far as Bournemouth/ Poole.
You just replicated a "longest day" scenario substituting "time at customer" with "Waiting for Mercedes"
    .
    Officially Service Technician approved!
    .
(Bearing in mind that an Employer actually wants you *on site* rather than driving, so these days are rare)

This has potential (EV pun?) to become a great fleet car, even for the "lower salary" employees, due to the BIK and fleet running cost advantages.

I helped a delivery driver this week who picked up a 72 plate Model Y that had 8 miles on the clock, was in Transport mode and had 0% battery when the auction place drove it out. It had a flat 12V battery as well.
The service screen said there was 2% available and it was 5 miles to the nearest charger (shell). When we got there (phew) it started charging at 130kW despite being laid up for a year and being completely empty.

Concerns arise when considering the need for battery upgrades down the line. Until there are significant advancements in battery technology it's a big NO for me.

You need to include other conditions in order to get a true picture… you touched on the weight but what about Wind (HW/TW), elevation change, actual speed etc… I have a ‘21 Model 3 LR (Heat Pump) and it advertised initially 353 miles… With my driving style, about 10mph over the speed limit in all conditions, Car now has 23,000 miles I got 254WH/mile indicated as average however, my realistic range is 250 miles with 8-10% remaining on any of my road trips.
I have put in my head that I can do about 2.5 miles for every percentage point around town and 2.3 miles for each 1% on Freeway trips. This way I always have at least about 20 miles remaining to reach a charger if need be.
Using the “percentage trick” I can always tell how far I can go very quickly just by looking at the state of charge.

If drag increases proportionally with speed...
70-60 would be a 27% reduction in drag.
Then you'd have to know what percentage of the energy use was attributable to just drivetrain....
      .
I would guesstimate somewhere between 10-15% reduction in consumption due to that speed reduction?
(There's better than the EPA quoted range?)

Weren't ICE cars always quoted at "56mph" for the best consumption/speed balance?

Great video as always Richard - just had an extended test drive in the RWD Model 3, from Bournemouth Tesla. A good opportunity to compare against my 2022 M3 RWD. The new car is significantly quieter with more supple suspension, better, albeit higher seating, and a higher quality interior. Hated the lack of indicator stalks which caught me out trying to change lane on a roundabout. Also felt the regen braking was slightly less “on and off” with my domestic manager commenting on the smoothness of the ride. Also noticed a slight improvement in overall efficiency.
At just sub £40k here in the UK the M3 RWD represents good value imo, and should be capable of 250 mile range, even in winter. Personally could not justify the extra £10k for the AWD version.

Basically if I would live outside Germany I wouldn't even consider the Long Range because the Standard Range is already more than enough in terms of range.

It would be interesting to compare the M3rwd (Highland) in everyday driving to see how the single motor variant compares. My average consumption after 2 years in the M3rwd is 13.0kWh/100km (4.8mi/kWh). So considering dual motor cars seem to be about 10% less efficient and your drive yielding 13.8, things would look good for a real world efficiency of 12.0kWh/100km (5.2mi/kWh). Wow, mixing imperial and SI units is a PITA. Glad you at least added a caption with the conversion.
Since I got my M3, Tesla has removed the TACC radar, the US sensors, the passenger lumbar support, the drive select stalk and the indicator/wiper stalk. They have added ventilated seats, better sound proofing, ambient lighting and a rear seat screen (redundant in my case as I rarely have backseat passengers). All wrapped up in a nicer looking package. Will I upgrade? Probably not. I would rather stick with the LFP battery, the M3LR doesn’t have that and the Highland RWD isn’t enough of a gain for what I would have to pay to get it.

@@RSEV Done over 3000 miles so far. Picked up my Highland in November. I drove from Oslo to East Sussex over Christmas. 292 Wh/mile. Started with ice cold battery ( did it on purpose to test the LFP). Preheating went constant for the first 300 miles down to -7 degrees. So not comparable to UK! However I did measure 244 Wh/mile on UK roads, including. some motorway.(Nokian R5 winter tyres and no hubcaps)

Crazy that the new LR will easily break 400 miles during milder months. I'm still proudly rocking a late 2019 white M3 SR and it's only got about 8% battery degradation after 91k miles :D Will be keeping it for many years to come. I now see about 180 miles range in the winter, around 230 in the summer.

Is the range on the new Model 3 LR matching that of the Model S LR, which has almost 15-20 kWh more usable battery capacity?

I’m getting RWD highland and I’m told to expect it to be the most efficient Tesla on the road. Old model 3 RWD was always more efficient than the LR and I expect that to be more so in the refresh.

+300… the yardstick for non-Tesla EVs. It’d be interesting to see, for instance, real world range tests on both new ID7 and PS2 (LRSM), bearing in mind also Kia EV6, as I’m viewing these 3 at moment as key competitors to 3 and Y.
    Very informative review as usual.

Can you record the percentage loss overnight using the security cameras. It was quite high in the early days would be nice to see if it's been fixed. Is phantom braking still a thing?

You can just check the percentage when you leave and check when you come back. In my 2019 model 3 it's usually only like 1% loss in a night.
