Clapping is an essential part of sufi music. It is a process of enabling everyone to sync together. The sufi music's main theme is surrender to God and a big part of music is to praise God. Even this song talks about the almighty God and a urge/desire to merge yourself with God. The clap usually elevates the state of mind. This usually results in a meditative effect...
And important to remember that, that 'god' is shapeless, form less, a universal soul per ce, distributed equally in exact same concentration throughout the universe, and one's soul could be merged with it through intense devotion and expression!
This is a nice version but Nothing Tops the original. Trio - AR Rehman, Javed Ali and Mohit Chauhan made this truly masterpiece. I repeat.. Every song in RockStar deserves reaction and analysis. Mohit Chauhan was choosen as voice for the lead actor, so whenever you see the main guy singing it's his voice. Other singers voices are used as background.

This is not just a song, its a healer, a shoulder, a hope for anyone who is suffering. Everytime i hear this song(original) it brings tears to my eyes. I don't quite understand what I feel but it certainly moves my soul in a way i don't understand myself. This song comes directly from the realms of healing and hope and is beyond every religion. Truly magical!
Kun Faya Kun actually holds a very deep meaning. These are the words said by the Lord when He was creating the universe. It means "Be and it is" hence the lyrics jab kuch nahin tha wahi tha.. no words can explain this...
Glad you said it. The real video and the composition from Rockstar can only do any kind of justice to the words and music. This is honestly, really bad from Berklee - I felt no connectivity, no flow, zero emotions, they are doing whatever. Jiya Jale from them was also bad. Don't know why their AR Rahman redos are so watched. I mean they might all be amazing musicians, but a composition, when it comes to Indian songs, need to have words and emotions in sync with vocal tones and music. I'd always suggest people new to Indian music to watch original compositions first. Our music directors really know how to compose a piece.
Your understanding of music is so intricate that you understand a lot of technical aspect of Indian music and composition which many outsiders couldn’t get. The way you break down the minute details and discuss about them is a delight to watch. Loads of love from India 🇮🇳
The woman at the Piano is a faculty at Berklee School of Music and she leads the Indian Ensemble. So Waleska was spot on! Could you guys please also check out "Unnai Kannadhu Naan" by the same group please? You're going to be blown away!
Regarding the topic of finding the subtle notes, efra hit it on the nail that the Raag decides the notes that you can hit. Watch more Indian music theory. Watch a 45-60 min classical video by Shubha Mudgal, Kaushiki Chakroborty, Pt Bhimsen Joshi. In those videos you will be able to see the complete exploration that these musicians do with the Raag. How it starts really slow with the most core notes and the amount of permutations and combinations of those notes which bring out the beauty of the raag itself. It will then speed up where they will start to fit in phrases using the notes of the Raag and then the fast combos while keeping perfect tempo.
This is one of my most favorite songs in the world. You must listen to the original movie version. I think it’s a lot of magical than this one. And god the lyrics. I wish you guys could understand hindi/urdu. It’s such a beautiful language and English translation doesn’t even do any justice. The feeling of catharsis you get from this song can only be fully realized with its lyrics. (And that’s one of the things that differentiates hindi songs from English you know??) The language in itself is SO RICH AND POETIC!! I personally find English very basic. It’s good for speeches but falls so flat when it comes to poetry in comparison. Just my thoughts!!!
I believe the genre of this song is called “Sufi” from the “Sufism” ways of Islam. The song here is a Muslim prayer song as some other have mentioned. That’s why you see minimal to no movements. They’re showing their respects.
The way you analyze each and every video so thoroughly just reflects the amount of respect you have and how genuine you are regarding the piece...this is honestly so rare love ittt
Now you guys have to react to the studio version of this song it's a different experience ❤️❤️. Just kidding but do listen to the studio version on your own time you will love it as well. And love your little details you give during the song about music and vocals❤️.
The magic of Indian music is embedded in its spiritual roots. Millenia of spiritual accomplishment flows through the very core of Indians, the language, it's scared geography and cultural practices that includes music. It should not be surprising that the music is transcendental and always manages to tug those emotions that no other music is capable of. To start understanding the music, it is important to understand the people and its ancient history. If music is your poison then start with "Natyashastra", its the foundational text for all Indian performing arts. The best thing to do is immerse yourself in India by visiting the place. A formal course at an institute like Berklee will apply the western scientific standards of attempting to explain something by decomposing it but is never successful at explaining the holistic magic. Go beyond the science...

I am a Sikh by faith ,The hyms are chanted with Harmonium and Tabla in Gurudwara(placof worship)also.
95% of the artists don't even have Urdu/Farsi as their first language, this is an islamic song. Even AR Rehman is a South Indian who converted to Islam who doesn't speak Urdu/Farsi however, created a soulful song in it. Thats what can happen in India sheer out of love and passion for music. This country is and will always be beautiful when it comes to music irrespective of how many powers will come in to divide us. God bless us all!!!!
Shreya Ghoshal, the Berklee Indian Ensemble performance musicians were lauto player Vasilis Kostas-Greece, violinist Layth Sidiq Iraq/Jordan, and tabla player Giri Subramaniam-India. India & its subcontinent countries fall under South Asia. The South East Asian countries are Vietnam Thailand Philippines Malaysia, Indonesia, South China, others etc.
"Be, and it is" this is what "Kun, Faya Kun" literally means... When Allah says in the Quran that Whatever/Whenever He( Allah is neither He nor She, it is because of limitations of human languages and the 'He' here is used for ease of purpose) wishes to create something He just commands it to be and it is, hence "Kun Faya Kun". Allah is the Ultimate Creator, everything and everyone else is a creation (His creation) and thus we, who usually refer to our endeavours as creativity, are just discoverers at best in every art form. This is the crux on which this edifice stands, these melodies revolve around.
Just in case you guys didn't realise, the violinist who sang is actually an Iranian artist, and he was basically singing in Arabic, even though he only sang two words "Ya Ali" which I believe is a Muslim term used to invoke the nephew of Prophet Muhammad, Ali Ibn Abu Talib. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. EDIT: Ali was not himself a prophet but the nephew of Prophet Muhammad.
I come from a Sufi community. I used to sing songs like this. With everyone vibing and instruments. Its so serene. That clapping is mainly used to track the rhythm. Each clap we chant "Allah" in between like a heartbeat.
You guys should definitely check out 'tum tak' from movie Ranjhnaa. It's also AR Rahman's another amazing work. I'd insist you check out the movie version bcz there's probably no live performance but even if there was it wouldn't be the same. You would love the song , the music is great.

The beginner's course of Indian classical music is called 'Sangeet Visharad '..It's a 6 yrs course which includes several Raags and Taal. Eligible age is 9 yrs or above. After Visharad which is the basic course. There is Vid, Kovid, Geetanjali.
Great discussion and analysis, it's illuminating for me coming from Indian music as well to know how you guys think. Regarding the question of whether or not they're improvising, in this case, with the large number of singers and instruments, everything is probably precomposed -- even the individual bits. But in a smaller concert, there may be a lot of improvisation on the same basic song.
Guys I have watched so many reaction of other youtubers but u guys are just amazing i love the way u see the details in the audio + video of the song I just love u amigos 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Guys please do check out AR Rahman's latest album from the movie ATRENGI RE . It's a wonderful album , each and every song is so beautiful . The arrangement in the songs is so well done . Even some songs are sung by Shreya and Arijit. After a very long time Bollywood have received a good album .

I would like to suggest a master piece by AR Rahman sir which was sung by a legend SP Balasubramanyam a legend in true words you would be amazed Song name : En kadhale En kadhale Music Director : AR Rahman Singer : SP Balasubramanyam
Well talking about the course... Let me tell u one thing that Indian musi is itself an ocean 🌊 literally an ocean .... It's spritual devotion love pain all emotion.. As an Indian, we have mixed history so every aspect be it food culture religion especially music we r diverse. we have Hindustani classical , Carnatic music , sufi , mix of both n many mire ..the one u just heard has the sufi the essence of spirituality , it has urdu words .
This song is the pinnacle of indian music . This song is so good it could very well be the national song of india. . Remember the time i was in college . it was our final year. people were stressed about their jobs . every room in hostel had this song playing at night . This took you to a diffrent world . A world that wasnt driven by fear but by hope . Edit : pls watch h the original mv its awesome
Kneeling comes from Prayer....I am writing here for the first time...it is because it is Kun fayakun.... kun fayakun is different... Whenever I feel broken ....I always turn to Kun fayakun .... After a poll on fb ...We friends found out that Kun fayakun was the song that most of us suggested each other to listen... whenever one is down
that way of sitting in kneeling position is called vajrasana in yoga I took a yoga/ meditation course once it took me like 30-40 days to get comfortable in that position
Guys it'd be great if you watch along the lyrics, although it won't be as accurate as the language in which the lyrics are written(obviously) but still. Few recommendations - Aaj ibadat, Piya tu kahe rootha re, O rangrez, mera yaar.. All by Javed Bashir :)
So much of work is there in this song... So much..... And then when I listen to the film version I realise what level of greatness Mohit Chauhan has achieved to deliver this piece single handedly. 🙏
Lag ja gale (1964, woh kaun thi ) -sung Lata Mangeshkar, composed by Madan Mohan (if you love Shreya, Lata ji is a bigger legend) Chaiyya Chaiyya (1998, Dil Se) - singer- Sukhwinder Singh (music video is like no other in history of the word!!!), composed by AR Rahman Kahe ched ched - (2002,Devdas ) And Maar daala -( Devdas) - Kavitha Krishnamurthy, composer - Ismail Darbar Roshni Se (Asoka, 2000) - singers- Chitra and Abhijeet ; composer -Anu Malik Teri mehfil main kismet aazma ke (1960, Mughal E Azam): singers -Lata Mangeshkar and Shamshad Begum; Composed by Naushad (This is a musical which is legendary in the history if Indian cinema for may reasons, only movie to be re-released in colour again in 2004 and was a super hit yet again)
The kneeling is position in which Sufi musicians sing in to stay grounded and feel resolute in their meditative state to exist in flow of the moment in surrendering to vibrations of music for God.
This is a devotional song..Clapping is an essential thing in sufi music and bhajans too as it maintains time frame (beats i mean)..i myself took carnatic music course (South Indian classical music) and have given exams..trust me they are not so easy to pass..in india parents make children to take music as extra talent apart from studies especially for girls and classical dance too..its a part of our culture..these art forms are usually performed in front of gods..especially classical music and dance forms..thats why you get that devotional feel..even in bollywood songs…and fiy in classical music also u improvise but not randomly u take a phrase and can sing in any type of raag which has specific note frame..thats why indian songs r so melodic…
Its called a Qawalli. :) The Sufi/Bhakti movements that started 15th - 16th century India had a major influence in classical Music and dance of India. Especially northern India.
Only A.R RAHMAN things... no one can be better than him when it comes to composing music... the diamond of indian music industry... the oscar winner, the grammy winner..❤

chanted with Harmonium and Tabla in Gurudwara(placof worship)also.
You must hear the Original movie version of this song. It is originally sung by A.R. Rehman sir. Its a gem🙏
Shreya Ghoshal, the Berklee Indian Ensemble performance musicians were lauto player Vasilis Kostas-Greece, violinist Layth Sidiq Iraq/Jordan, and tabla player Giri Subramaniam-India. India & its subcontinent countries fall under South Asia. The South East Asian countries are Vietnam Thailand Philippines Malaysia, Indonesia, South China, others etc.
This song was song for religious purpose , but it is done for Allah hence Islam . Btw A R. Rahman is a Muslim, he is actually a revert
Yaaay finallllyyyyyyyy😍😍. Thank u so much for reading our comments and reacting😭
React to its original version
Pretty divine nd soulful composition by A.R.Rehman sir. It takes me to the another divine world.
"Be, and it is"
this is what "Kun, Faya Kun" literally means...
Not a prophet. Ali Ra was the nephew of Prophet Muhammad PBUH.
@@user-kw6ez6jt4e got it thank you for that!
There are live versions on RUclips sung by the original singer Javed Ali who also sung in Kun Faya Kun
@@rcanuck19 but is it any good? Bcz I personally think Indian live versions don't have that quality and feels as the original version.
@@SD-nx6ky yes..Javed Ali is one of those rare talents that sound just like the recording. He’s sang the song a couple of times in Saregampa which he judged. Also check his song Lab Par Aaye..you won’t regret it..he’s classically trained
@@rcanuck19 yea ik he's one of my favourite singers. It's just that I really don't prefer the live versions of any Indian singers but I will check it out :)
@@SD-nx6ky fair enough..glad you know about him..amazing talent
do watch the original version to enjoy it fully
This song is from the movie rockstar....

The beginner's course of Indian classical music is called 'Sangeet Visharad '..It's a 6 yrs course which includes several Raags and Taal. Eligible age is 9 yrs or above. After Visharad which is the basic course. There is Vid, Kovid, Geetanjali.
Wooohoo
Big thanks for this ❤️
Great discussion and analysis, it's illuminating for me coming from Indian music as well to know how you guys think. Regarding the question of whether or not they're improvising, in this case, with the large number of singers and instruments, everything is probably precomposed -- even the individual bits. But in a smaller concert, there may be a lot of improvisation on the same basic song.
React to the original song it's a masterpiece by rahman and mohit .. The film version
Guys I have watched so many reaction of other youtubers but u guys are just amazing i love the way u see the details in the audio + video of the song I just love u amigos 🥰🥰🥰🥰

U must hear AR's jai ho.. its an oscar winning song
All Indian music Industry Bowed there head towards the A R rehman
FYI: There are numerous ragas. Raag yaman is only one of them.
The violinist with the red hair "Layth Sidiq"
He's Arab (Iraqi/Jordanian)
And he sung arabic notes .
You should seriously react to the original one, as well! :)
Kneeling comes from Prayer....I am writing here for the first time...it is because it is Kun fayakun.... kun fayakun is different... Whenever I feel broken ....I always turn to Kun fayakun .... After a poll on fb ...We friends found out that Kun fayakun was the song that most of us suggested each other to listen... whenever one is down
That's Anette Phillip who is playing Piano and she is director of this Indian assemble of Berklee college of music.
You guys need to react to the whole album of Rockstar- Trust me its that good
You should watch the original song ❤️ its fire 🔥
The piano player is actually their professor, I don’t remember her name now but she is the one who arranged these pieces
that way of sitting in kneeling position is called vajrasana in yoga
I took a yoga/ meditation course once
it took me like 30-40 days to get comfortable in that position
Guys it'd be great if you watch along the lyrics, although it won't be as accurate as the language in which the lyrics are written(obviously) but still.
Few recommendations - Aaj ibadat, Piya tu kahe rootha re, O rangrez, mera yaar.. All by Javed Bashir :)
Indian music and Indian singing is on another level, Indian classical music is way hard but who have learnt it after anything is easy for them ❤️❤️🇮🇳
So much of work is there in this song... So much..... And then when I listen to the film version I realise what level of greatness Mohit Chauhan has achieved to deliver this piece single handedly. 🙏
Lag ja gale (1964, woh kaun thi ) -sung Lata Mangeshkar, composed by Madan Mohan (if you love Shreya, Lata ji is a bigger legend)
Chaiyya Chaiyya (1998, Dil Se) - singer- Sukhwinder Singh (music video is like no other in history of the word!!!), composed by AR Rahman
Kahe ched ched - (2002,Devdas )
And Maar daala -( Devdas) - Kavitha Krishnamurthy, composer - Ismail Darbar
Roshni Se (Asoka, 2000) - singers- Chitra and Abhijeet ; composer -Anu Malik
Teri mehfil main kismet aazma ke (1960, Mughal E Azam): singers -Lata Mangeshkar and Shamshad Begum; Composed by Naushad (This is a musical which is legendary in the history if Indian cinema for may reasons, only movie to be re-released in colour again in 2004 and was a super hit yet again)
The Sufi/Bhakti movements that started 15th - 16th century India had a major influence in classical Music and dance of India. Especially northern India.
the original version is more beautiful ...more soulful
Only A.R RAHMAN things... no one can be better than him when it comes to composing music... the diamond of indian music industry... the oscar winner, the grammy winner..❤
Since you guys love Indian classical music you should react to the songs of Bandish Bandits and also Thaye Yashoda from Morning Raga( one the earliest version of classical fusion shown in Indian movies!)
Please listen to the original version, and also the live performances of this song with AR Rahman
You guys NEED to listen to the studio version by AR Rehman. It literally gives me chills everytime, makes you feel like you transcend this world
