In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to some great fusion music from composer A.R. Rahman and The Berklee Indian Ensemble. This performance is nuanced, fresh, and musically tight. I really enjoyed it, and I hope you do as well!

Didn't AR Rahman also win an Oscar for Jai Ho? (Slumdog Millionaire)
Yes, 2 Oscars for this movie.
Slumdog mil is just 30% of Rahman's potential
It's such a shame that Rahman is mostly known globally for a track like Jai ho. Us indian fans don't care about it at all. Somehow that had an earbug effect worldwide I suppose
He did and he will probably get few more, but Jai Ho is not his best composition... highly complex mind you but he has just done so many more; that Jai Ho seemed like "okay nice" to us. Simply put, Songs from Rangeela, Dil Se, Rockstar, Roja, Bombay etc.. are in their own league.. Those are unique. but as he is still at it and not that old; the best is yet to come.
AR Rehman was subpar on this one. Not up to his true potential.
Satrangi Re
Chaiya Chaiya
Phir Se Ud Chala
Nadaan Parinde
and so many more..
The entire Dil Se soundtrack is a masterpiece and represents some of Rahman’s finest work and Indian film music as a whole. Highly recommend checking it out.
Indian music is eternal and so sophisticated.
Excellent at every level and truly exciting and beautiful. I want to hear tons more of this!
Please watch-Berklee Indian Ensemble - Unnai Kaanadhu Naan (360 Video from Power Station at BerkleeNYC)
Beautiful experience. Thanks for sharing that@@gulfbala72
Ar Rahman is considered as the god of music in India..his music literally teleports the listener to a higher dimension. He revolutionized indian music to a new era
I enjoyed the seamless flow from Eastern to Western styles. Superb musicianship all around!
Basic is indian classical though
That is FANTASTIC! Several years back, I saw Anoushka Shankar in concert and it was very similar, very Fusion mostly Indian and Jazz!
I recommend the following:
"Exquisite Afternoon Raag Bhimpalasi | Kaushiki Chakraborty"
"Divine Layakari | Raag Yaman | Ustad Shahid Parvez & Ojas Adhiya"
"Shakti: Tiny Desk Concert" (The last song at 13:20)
Thanks, I'll put those on my list of things to look up. I'd personally suggest to anyone who likes this that they also investigate Louiz Banks (who is Indian though his name isn't). His album 'Gangashakti' for a start.
Elite taste, I would like to add Sid Sriram : Tiny desk concert
WOW! What a groove...
I think there are 16 performances in The Berkelee-ARRahman peformances playlist, and each of them is a great gateway for a non Indian as an introduction to Indian music!!
Really amazing that you react to this music. Thank you so much for that.
Just to mention this: The bass player, Achal Murthy, an Indian guy living in Luxembourg is the bass player of my son’s alternative metal trio “Atomic Rocket Seeders”.
The band is: Berklee bassman Achal Murthy, the incredible drummer Luca Daresta, an my son TAP (Thierry A. Porcedda) guitar and vocals.

Ar rahman what a musician world iconic musician
1. A. R. Rahman, "Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera" (Swades): Berklee Indian Ensemble and Berklee World Strings
and
2. Berklee Indian Ensemble ft. Armeen Musa - Jaago Piya
from this same Berklee College. There are some more, but, these have waited 10 years.
Rahman is a genius and this concert in his presence is fabulous. Why not try his Bombay Theme, only music or Taal se Taal, my favorite . If you don't know this composer, consider listen to him extensively. His music is magical.
It was actually pretty true to the original! Masterful! People have to listen to the original soundtrack arrangements if they don't know this banger! AR Rahman is a god. He's done so many legendary soundtracks... the only parallel in the US film market would be someone like Hans Zimmer or John Williams.
You missed to mention A R Rahman won 2 oscars too ❤️
2?
Grammies, Golden globe 🌎
@@abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz987 yes yes for the same movie ig
@@ArpitSgh36 no he has 1 oscar
Pls pls check out ARRahman oscar winning background score, your ears will be blessed with sitar.....
Sir, it seems to me like this is one of your first experiences with Indian music.
This particular song is what AR Rahman is all about.
This presentation of the original composition is fantastic.
But if you ever find time, do listen to the original one, the baseline on that is one of the best ever recorded. The dynamic range of the track is vast, each instrument comes and shines. The singer Late Lata Mangeshkar (Legendary Singer) was the quintessential voice of the independent India. This track was never recognized for it's beauty in totality, majorly because of the lack of good audio systems had not reached every Indian home. But today, when I listen to it; it's one of the best mastered audio. The sound engineering is right up there with one of the best ever. The whole album "Dil Se" was a smashing hit; movie not so much.
Do yourself a favor and listen to "Satrangi Re" from the same album, it will blow you away. If you're into music that technically is borderline insanely good; that track is one to start with.
Every possible note in and above scale has been used and it works.
Thank you for reacting to indian music ❤
The lyrics are supposed to be a bride talking about her wedding night to a girl friend of hers. The singer Lata (RIP) famously disliked """dirty"""" songs so the lyrics are very poetic and try to evocate sensuality while being very nebulous and romantic. Helps that Gulzar the lyricist is probably the finest poet of our time here in India. Gulzar + AR Rehman have produced some of the biggest, most iconic, most influential bits of music in modern Indian pop culture.
Another AR Rahman song “Chayya chayya” from the same “Dil Se” movie soundtrack was also used by Spike Lee for the film inside man starring Denzel Washington. Check out the videos of the original songs.. they’re pretty cool too
I think I requested this one on your channel sometime ago. Glad to see this one!!
Wow , long term follower here. Thanks for picking this up and doing a deep dive. As a person from India, Fantastic to see the recognition and your interpretation ! Now looking forward to the next metal Monday ; )

Loved the reaction. You should check out Agam - Rangapura Vihara next. It will blow your mind!
Hi, Doug. I've been waiting for the right time to make a suggestion and this is it. You must listen to Maria Kalaneimi's "Ahma". She, along with band members fron the Finnish Institute of Folk Music whip up extrordinary compositions. Ms. Kalaniemi plays the 5-row button accordion, which, if you are not familiar with it, is a mighty, redoubtable instrument by itself; ably supported by the rest of the band the music is alternately, cooly melodic then becomes wildly chaotic before resolving into a satisfying conclusion. It's almost exhausting. The whole album is amazing. Do yourself a favor! Hope you can get to this gem.
Nice!
Welcome to the ocean of Indian music .
I can also recommend the Soemon ensemble from Japan
10:44 yes please
React to all Telugu Tamil Ar Rahman live songs

This is indeed a fusion of jazz with Indian classical and contemporary music. It was interesting that you brought that up. In the original, however, you may notice a fusion of Indian classical and contemporary music.
You may react to
Berklee Indian Ensemble ft Shankar Mahadevan - 5 Peace Band (Live at Berklee)

This is originally a composition called 'Shakti' by '5 piece band' by John Mclaughlin, U Srinivas, Zakir Hussain, V Selvaganesh, and Shankar Mahadevan.
Cheers.
Tokyo Rain by Marcus Warner is a masterpiece soundtrack!
You should check that out!
The magic of the Western string instruments that have no frets. You can make the harmonics you want.
I love fusion from around the world when it touches on jazz, probably in my top 2 - 3 types of music.
Without man (proper musician), music knowledge , instruments are useless
Half-Ass knowledge is dangerous & you prove that!
Nice reaction, do check out another rahman berklee ensemble- thee thee❤

There was a song Diya Jale
Dude, he won two academy awards (oscars) too but you missed to mention those.
I think if you say double harmonic major one more time Fariya Faraji will come at you with a pitchfork. This song is most likely in sindhu bhairavi raga (I'm no expert).
You should listen to Dil se re title track that's a masterpiece composition
Please listen this team's (Berkeley ensumble) " unai kanadha"
Yo, how come you missed 2 Oscars for AR Rahman given for " slumdog millionaire" ?
And thank god for that! It was his most sub-par direction for music, understandably ad it was propaganda brit movie!
Watch "indian jam project" ... clasical instrumental...
Secret Chiefs 3 is a natural recommendation here.
Well, take a holly dip in Indian music.

Re. Your call for suggestions to react to : ruclips.net/video/gYiRRS1Qpu8/видео.html | Kāliṅga Nartana Tillānā | Vande Guru Paramparaam | Sooryagayathri, Rahul Vellal, Kuldeep M Pai : This will be a musical experience outside your comfort zone as a Western composer!
This number is a Carnatic (South Indian Classical Music) composition from the 18th Century, composed primarily for the 'Bharathanatyam' classical dance form, sung here by two young singers and their Guru (13 million views on RUclips), whose YT channel has 2.85 million subscribers. You should watch some of his music videos with his young disciples, to get a glimpse of the South Indian Classical genre of Indian Classical music. You will be intrigued and fascinated.
Please check out Indian Classical Instruments Jam ft. SIRI | Tushar Lall (TIJP) Requiem for a Dream Music (originally composed by Clint Mansell) on Indian Classical Instruments Its awesome..
This a better rendition than the original song sunk by Lata Mangeshkar.
Plz react mistof Capricorn Agam band
Watch ‘What is a raag’ by Anuja K - Thank me later 😅
Please listen to dark version of the song,, can't help falling in love "by Diana Ankudinovaruclips.net/video/M-znD6QKbrg/видео.html
If you want to get the highest level of music in the world produced by A R Rahman pls listen to Bombay Theme original.. not the stage version.. I’m not being biased being Indian.. you listen, you’ll get what I’m saying..
It's quite difference from a lot of the tracks you cover, but I'd be very interested to hear what you make of Kate Rusby's My Young Man ruclips.net/video/ZkA745lANAY/видео.html
react to shreya goshal
I understand its hard to match the level of lata ji but still it looks like i expected a bit too much
Honestly, Western music just cannot match the level and heights that Indian music are at. Western music does not even recognize those principles of percussions and most importantly, the complex art behind the creation of Indian music.
Indian music is not just an art, but also a lot of emotion
The systems are quite different. To say western music does not have complexity or emotion is incorrect. You are probably not very familiar with western harmony or counterpoint. To principles and priorities of the systems are different. Certainly percussion is a more important and broadly developed aspect in Indian music. But composers like stravinsky have innovated in poly rhythms etc. both music need deep dives to really understand.
You can only compare AR Rehman songs to other AR Rehman songs
Original is original...
Check out Laal ishq by Arijit Singh, a semi Indian classical song.
Unusual for the music of a Hindi Bollywood movie.
Really good!!
The director MANI RATNAM and music composer here AR RAHMAN are actually pioneers in the TAMIL language Film industry or KOLLYWOOD ..... the actors and language is Hindi or bollywood though..... so the creative credit is not bollywood but kollywood..... the same duo did ROJA some years before which was even more successful and originally in Tamil... ❤❤❤
