The idea that's good for the story isn't always good for the player or the character. And i would rather die in a spectacularly memorable way in game than live and win.... and be forgotten by the party in a year because i played it safe.
Actually that's what I hated most about this scene. Matt came in with no real plan and he allowed the players to deflate the tension with no consequence to the detriment of the overall build up of the entire story arc.

I loved how even as menacing and powerfully as Matt portrayed Vecna there were small hints of fear in him. Vecna was scared of Vox Machina, he knew what they were capable of and how deadly they could be even to a God
Giraffe that is only partially true. Powerful beings would also love a "truce" if it allowed them to get even more out of them that way. In this example it doesn't make sense, since there is nothing more to want for vecna once he is done with Vox Machina, but in other examples, with other villains, a truce might be more helpful even if the villain cut in fact really just murder them. There might be things out there bigger than the villain himself or the party, and a truce/alliance/servitude might help removing that other threat faster. TL;DR A Truce might also be interesting if they are only the villain's second or third biggest problem on the menu. they might help against the biggest problem if dealt with differently than killing.
Honestly, I think it's less of Vecna actually being scared of Vox Machina (he's too full of himself to be, at this point) and more of the Strahd mentality from CoS. He's so powerful and so untouchable that it's just flat out boring to outright kill the party. He has to play mind games with them first, otherwise it's just over too fast. One such mind game is to try and turn them against their friends and family first (thus the 'truce' and insistence that he's already turned some of their friends). He's the cat playing with its food before it eats them. What usually does villains like this in is their overconfidence. I really don't think Vecna began to fear Vox Machina until near the end of their final fight. But Grogg has a 6 intelligence, and Vax backs him up because he wants to try and bruise Vecna's ego... which I'm sure Vecna is used to adventurers attempting to do, by now.
When I first watched this scene, I thought Vecna was probably the least impressive villain so far since he shows up trying to intimidate them. It just came off as desperate and scared. Now watching it back, I'm pretty sure he was just doing it to amuse himself and wasn't really concerned with how they thought of him. Immediately after Ioun tells them about Vecna's hand, eye, and the sword, as kind of lame and unintimidating as it seemed the first time I watched this, Vecna showing up and *clapping* for them is kind of an amazing power play and I'm a little disappointed that went over my head the first time. He's a villain that only becomes really intimidating in retrospect after you see the full extent of what he's actually capable of.
I never noticed that... I forgot that his missing hand is considered an artifact. When did he regained his hand, anyways? Oh man, just imagine if Vecna had been able to regain his left eye. (It is his left hand that is typically missing along side his left eye?) I think that insanely hard battle that they had against him, would be even much more harder than it was. Sorry this is me just rambling.
@@KeiyarlaDraga I think it is traditionally his left eye and hand but I'm sure the specific side is interchangeable. I don't know if the eye would have enhanced Vecna or not though. They were fighting his avatar, a physical manifestation of his godlike power. It gets weird when you entering the metaphysical realm of Avatars and Deities in D&D games we'd need Matt to specify as it is of course, DM's word as law
I love the statue that Matt used for Vecna in the final battle. I would have spend the money to get one, if there wasn't for the fact it was a modified Warhammer miniature. I looked, and I found the miniature it used to be. It was still cool looking though. I give my DM too many ideas when I get him miniatures though. Got him a set of two mimics(A chest and barrel one), a beholder, beholder zombie, and a death tyrant miniatures. Still waiting to find that mimic. Can't be a campaign, may it be D&D or Pathfinder, in my opinion, without a mimic there traumatizing someone.
Good news, now there's a somewhat official one, The Vecna Dossier also includes an adventure for 20th level characters. If you didn't nab it, pester someone to show you the statblock.
@@g80gzt I had to modify my version of Vecna due to the fact that in my homebrew campaign, he doesn't use necromancy but the power of literal oblivion. In one of our sessions, I made my Vecna literally poof an NPC out of existence and memory of everyone, including the players. He can literally obliterate you, and even the fact that you existed in the first place.

I was hoping when I clicked on this video that it would be a compilation of all the times Vox Machina (mostl Vex) flipped off the air just in case Vecna was watching.
I think the best part is that he had indeed measured their capabilities. And then they basically got a free feywild night of rest mid-battle. woo! He never used "hold person" during the final battle like he did in the previous one, tho.
They learned from the previous bout and planned around so everyone had Freedom of Movement, which makes them all immune to Hold Person... Then Matt pulled a reverse Uno card on them determining a freaking god that used to be a wizard knowledgeable enough to become a Lich would simply see they had that spell on them and didn't even bother casting Hold Person.
Veemie - I just made it so that he always seemed to know what they were doing, though they didn’t know why. I had a method he was using, though I don’t remember it now.
When the party is losing a fight, have Strahd ambush them while using greater invisibility. Make the offending parties apologise at sword point or execute the PCs.
@@arandombard1197 This. I've never played "Ravenloft" or "Curse of Strahd", but this is how I've played my Dr. Doom type villains in various game. It's about respect, at least as much as about fear. If you have to outright obliterate a PC or two to set the tone, then it's a small price to pay. For a 5E game, it was high-level female Warlock who was parlaying with the characters, mostly to get them to simply stay out of the way of her plots. Being a sophisticated, intelligent noblewoman, she was absolutely polite and proper with the PCs. Then one of them insulted her and she had her guards bring out one of the NPCs that they favored and explained that every time they insulted her, the woman would get ten lashes from a whip...so really, it was them punishing the poor woman with their rudeness. And that once the parlay was over, she'd hand the NPC...or whatever was left of her...over to the PCs. They managed to avoid any further insults and when the negotiations are over, they're ready to take the NPC when she announces..."But...she needs her lashes first. I said EVERY time you insulted me and that includes the first". One of the other party members earned the poor girl another 10 lashes when he insulted the Warlock again but, true to her word, she had the woman released after punishment was enacted.
Vecna: "There is no peace..the way things are. You all bicker and stab and murder in the names of your mothers. Your fathers." Grog's body language: "Yeah. Pretty much. Yeah. That's pretty much it. Yeah."
I was thinking more of a Fire Lord Ozai type voice from Mark Hamil, also in today’s age I feel like PoC and LGBTQ community wouldn’t be so happy with a straight white guy playing a gay poc. I mean Critical Role already gets some heat from those two communities due to Critical Role cast being all white straight people with the exception of Talisen.

I like to imagine Vecna was actually there, and only projecting a Major Image or some other lower-level illusion spell from just around the corner, seeing an arrow fly straight through his illusion's heart, and remembering who he's dealing with here.
Probably because they were playing as vox before the show started streaming, they had a lo more time to grow into them. I personally love the freshness of the Mighty Nein, and I find myself more attracted to them than Vox, even though I've loved every minute of them.
I love Vox Machina but I definitely think overall I've come to enjoy the Mighty Nein more. I definitely think I prefer some characters for their players more then then VM. Like I loved Grog but definitely prefer Fjord. Travis gets to do so much more with him.
So now I'm in deep trouble. I mean, one more jolt of this death ray and I'm an epitaph. Somehow I manage to find cover and what does Vecna do? He starts monologuing! He starts like, this prepared speech about how "feeble" I am compared to him, how inevitable my defeat is, how the world will soon be his! Yadda yadda yadda... Yammering! I mean the guy has me on a platter and he won't shut up!

I love that even though Vecna was obviously posturing, he never loses his temper when they keep interrupting him to try and egg him on He's stays calm and entirely arrogant because he knows or at least believes he's more than powerful enough to destroy them all The mark of a great villian is complete confidence in themselves and their plans
Why am I still coming back to this scene. One thing I love is the way Matt scrunches up his face as he describes Venca's appearance to Vax, like even the DM hates him and can't stand his sheer presence

We kind of treated him like that one annoying cousin that you don't like but are forced to be nice around, and we all plotted whenever he was away.
Veemie - I just made it so that he always seemed to know what they were doing, though they didn’t know why. I had a method he was using, though I don’t remember it now.
When the party is losing a fight, have Strahd ambush them while using greater invisibility. Make the offending parties apologise at sword point or execute the PCs.
@@arandombard1197 This. I've never played "Ravenloft" or "Curse of Strahd", but this is how I've played my Dr. Doom type villains in various game. It's about respect, at least as much as about fear. If you have to outright obliterate a PC or two to set the tone, then it's a small price to pay. For a 5E game, it was high-level female Warlock who was parlaying with the characters, mostly to get them to simply stay out of the way of her plots. Being a sophisticated, intelligent noblewoman, she was absolutely polite and proper with the PCs. Then one of them insulted her and she had her guards bring out one of the NPCs that they favored and explained that every time they insulted her, the woman would get ten lashes from a whip...so really, it was them punishing the poor woman with their rudeness. And that once the parlay was over, she'd hand the NPC...or whatever was left of her...over to the PCs. They managed to avoid any further insults and when the negotiations are over, they're ready to take the NPC when she announces..."But...she needs her lashes first. I said EVERY time you insulted me and that includes the first". One of the other party members earned the poor girl another 10 lashes when he insulted the Warlock again but, true to her word, she had the woman released after punishment was enacted.

I was thinking more of a Fire Lord Ozai type voice from Mark Hamil, also in today’s age I feel like PoC and LGBTQ community wouldn’t be so happy with a straight white guy playing a gay poc. I mean Critical Role already gets some heat from those two communities due to Critical Role cast being all white straight people with the exception of Talisen.

Every time I watch this moment, I always imagine Vecna in a black suit and tie.
I like to imagine Vecna was actually there, and only projecting a Major Image or some other lower-level illusion spell from just around the corner, seeing an arrow fly straight through his illusion's heart, and remembering who he's dealing with here.

Probably because they were playing as vox before the show started streaming, they had a lo more time to grow into them. I personally love the freshness of the Mighty Nein, and I find myself more attracted to them than Vox, even though I've loved every minute of them.
I love Vox Machina but I definitely think overall I've come to enjoy the Mighty Nein more.
I definitely think I prefer some characters for their players more then then VM. Like I loved Grog but definitely prefer Fjord. Travis gets to do so much more with him.

I love that even though Vecna was obviously posturing, he never loses his temper when they keep interrupting him to try and egg him on
He's stays calm and entirely arrogant because he knows or at least believes he's more than powerful enough to destroy them all

One thing I love is the way Matt scrunches up his face as he describes Venca's appearance to Vax, like even the DM hates him and can't stand his sheer presence
