    There is this other woodworker on RUclips who has all the factory made jigs and fancy equipment and uses only walnut to make all his shop fixtures and jigs (walnut is like $14 per bdft around here) - I totally cannot relate to that person, like this guy is not a hobby woodworker.
    You, on the other hand, are very relatable - as a hobby, I cannot justify buying premium hardwood veneer plywood or exotic woods like bubinga or wenge, I build with whatever is reasonably priced and available. Good to see a fellow "real" hobby woodworker.

    Don't ever change, Matthius. You have 'way too much fun making great somethings out of not much at all. You disguise it as being thrifty but we all know that's how you get your kicks - whch does not at all distract from the inspiration and example you set for your subscribers.
    I wonder what would happen if someone dropped a truckload of prime cabinet lumber, a half ton of precision shafting, bearings, and cold rolled steel rectangular bars and square tube, and a couple pallets of misc new motors and electronic controls in your lap? A blind dog in a meat market comes to mind - for about a day but then the fun would be gone.

    Uses scraps, still ends up with a perfectly fine board left over.
    I love doing projects like that. Not just in wood working, but also in electronics. Instead of buying parts I rather take other things apart for the components. It's not that they are expensive, but I can't have all possible parts "in stock" (that would be a waste) and buying them just is too much hassle (or impossible if it's a weekend) or just takes too long if I have to order them.

    Next step is surely to make brand new wood from all of the dust and shavings you have stored up in the collection system to really be efficient, that being a joke of course and resourcefulness as displayed here and often before is admirable.

    • @drawlele
      @drawlele 5 лет назад

      Well if you think about it, it's not really a joke. Just build something like a plywood press, for turning veneer into plywood, then give it removable side of different thicknesses for different thickness MDF wrap top, bottom and sides with plastic buy a ton of glue/epoxy mix well with sawdust or chips (if you want to make particle board) and press away and let it sit for two or three days, square it up, flatten it out and bam new wood for more projects.

    Being cheap with shop furniture makes sense to me. I’m building some drawers right now and I’m using some old 2x construction grade lumber and some scraps I had lying around. For anything that goes in the house or is given to anyone else, I use more premium stuff. It all depends what the use is. I do have more of an OCD thing about stuff matching, sometimes even when I can’t see it, but as long as it’s structurally sound, I’ll use less expensive stuff in the shop or in projects where it’s not going to be visible or matter. It will still probably all match though.

  • @cbalan777
    @cbalan777 5 лет назад

    I would disagree that this is too much scrimping, but maybe because I do something similar. I have boards from an old project that have holes from a pneumatic nailer. I removed the nails and reused the boards for another project. Then I reused them again recently and now they have screw holes in them from that project. I've also taken apart several plywood desks and reassembled them into different plywood desks using different length 2x4's for legs. I think it only makes sense to keep reusing what you have. As long as the wood isn't rotten you can reuse it, and as long as the screws don't break you can reuse those too.

    To me, that shelf seems elegant and efficient. But I also didn't build it. The limit of "too much scrimping" is up to the person who's spending time on it. Definitely a blurry line.
