While a goal of this kind of music is to appear utterly chaotic, it isn't chaos that you are hearing. It is total precision on a level you are just not accustomed to.

I actually got both experiences over a decade apart from one another. As a 12 or 13 year old kid who thought Black Veil Brides was extremely heavy, my first encounter with None So Vile was listening for about 30 seconds and thinking "What in the flying fuck is this trash?" Fast forward 13 years or so and I've come to appreciate death metal as a whole, and it has actually become my favorite genre of music. At this point in my life I put None So Vile in my top 10 albums of all time. Looking back at my younger self I can only laugh. The poor fella just wasn't ready haha!

YES!!!!!!!! Been trying to get people to react to Cryptopsy forever. You're the first that's taken the bait. This definitely takes some getting used to. In 1996 when this came out, it was probably the fastest, heaviest album ever produced. Try the song "Eaten" by Bloodbath for a good starter song for death metal. It's slower, simpler, and super catchy. Either the studio version or live at Wacken are both good versions.

I sometimes forget that I like this album. They have a lot of good riffs here. I was surprised to see this on here because of how brutal they are. But yeah, I 100% second the suggestion to listen to the band "Death". They are the pioneers of the death metal genre. They aren't nearly as intense and chaotic as the kind of stuff Cryptopsy was doing here, so I imagine you'll have an easier listen. I would start with the song "Symbolic". Death is the perfect entry band into the genre.

Death Metal (in general) is existential commentary. It’s not promotional of any lifestyle or worldview. It’s about grappling with mortality. I’m not a fan myself, musically, but the extreme presentation is not really a characteristic of the people who listen to it. Most are kind and considerate people. It’s chaotic and wild, but so is the vast majority of the universe.
Most death metalheads I’ve met are extremely gentle and quiet in all other aspects of their life. Thoughtful, as odd as it may seem.

aw man, they really did pull into this, did they? This album is actually technical death metal, which is when death metal has combinations of unusual rhythm, unusual melody, unusual time signature, and/or high tempo. Take for example Necrophagist, which is slower than this, but filled with more "conversation" between the guitars.
This album has another unique characteristic that isn't really found inn other tech death metal albums, and its that it actually dips its toes into brutal death metal territory. Arguably, it is THE starter album if you want to get into the likes of Suffocation, Defeated Sanity, Putridity, and Devourment. It is often argued (annd accepted) as a Brutal Death album. FYI, brutal death metal just takes every component of Death Metal and makes every single part of it heavier (that is, more oppressive.)
So here we have Technical/Brutal Death metal song, and its your first time listening to it. Would you, then, being the risk taker you are, mind listening to "Artifacts of Desolation" by "Defeated Sanity"? If Phobophile is technical death metal just getting into brutal death metal, then Artifacts of Desolation is fully committed Brutal Death with huge amounts of Tech death elements. Technical Brutal Death Metal, if you will (annd is accepted as such.)
Granted, its a very acquired taste, especially for the constannt time signature changes, wierd time signatures, constant shifting of the tonnal center, unusual melody (if there is one) of Tech Brute death, but I'd love to see your reaction of its sheer oppressiveness and its noncommital approach to any type of tone or rhythm (this constant shifting of rhythm is actually why you say you can't seem to find a rhythm in Phobophile. It just changes. A lot.)
    thank you,
    Dulg

Dope reaction man. Thanks for keeping an open mind. I love this album. It's not worth trying to figure out the lyrics, just treat the vocals as another percussive instrument. This is "brutal death metal" and Cryptopsy is one of the greats as far as brutal death goes along with Suffocation. If you wanted to learn more about regular death metal there are much easier ways to gain entry into the genre, and yes, it's something that you do get an ear for the more you listen to it. You could probably start with "Death", one of the pioneers of death metal as a fair entry point, but maybe some more modern stuff would be a good way to jump in. It would be fun to hear a reaction to something like Archspire - Involuntary Doppleganger (check out the lyric video). I think stuff like them, and unironically Dethklok are good entry level death metal.

A great death metal song is Shadowfear by Vader. Its brutal, but you can easily hear everything

Thanks for picking up on the challenge, I can understand that this sound pretty weird when it's something you've never heard before. Took me a few years of being a metalhead to get into heavier stuff, like brutal or technical death metal (even though Cryptopsy prob. is more ol' school, but they have a pretty unique sound they have). Seen them once, did speak to the vocalist afterward, he's a damn nice guy! Now a days, and when in the mood, anything but some brutal death is kinda boring.
All the best, and greetings from Sweden \m/

LOL. I remember the first time I listened to "Reign in Blood" by Slayer and my ears/brain just didn't know how to process it, and I had already listened to the likes of Megadeth and Metallica at that point. I couldn't imagine what it would be like to listen to freaking Cryptopsy as my first introduction to death metal. I would have zero clue how to process it.
Once you train your ears though, there is so much you will be able to pick up on. This song is actually quite melodic and classically inspired as far as I'm concerned. I have always wanted to listen to a piano cover of this song just for that reason, but unfortunately that's never happened.
When I heard this album for the first time the one thing that stood out to me the most was the drums. I had already listened to death metal by that point, but I had never heard drums quite as fast as I had listening to this album.

Darkthrone - Cromlech. a good death metal song by a Norwegian band that later on became known for Norwegian black metal (which you should check out next after death metal) As for the new York style death metal: Suffocation - Pierced from within. And for the florida style death metal: Morbid angel - Dawn of the angry. For melodic death metal: At the gates - suicide nation. those are four good songs to start...remember to pull the up the lyrics as you listen, that will help lol

A lot of the production quality was not that great on some of the older metal. But on top of that, digital audio file formats and their file compression schemes greatly harm metal music. If you were to listen to the original record or even the CD compared to the file that had to be uploaded to RUclips there's a huge difference. The file compression turns guitars like this into white noise. The original MP3 file format and it's compression algorithm was optimized for just human speech. And works well for those frequencies. But anything outside of that it does terribly with. Especially drum cymbals, and distorted guitars.

Creepy but it was hell of an experience great band from Montréal Canada . I would suggest you some awesome technical death metal from Beyond Creation every song is a complex piece of music but not hard to dive into .

If you want a good entry death metal band, try Obituary. They play a more groove oriented death metal. Cryptopsy is more something you'd want to jam after being exposed to death metal on a regular basis. Obituary, Morbid Angel, Death, Deicide are all easier listens. If you want more jazz influenced death metal, try Atheist.

I like how you don't interrupt (pause) the song to talk. You talk while it plays, then go back into it, as it should be. That way none of the song loses it's momentum. Fuck yeah, dude.

Ok.. I can see you've delved in a little into death metal.
I'll tell you something, straight up, right now.. death metal is fuckin addictive! Yeah, it's aggressive, hard to follow at times and the genre is vast, but, like fine wine, it matures and you grow into it. Stick with it, and you'll be rewarded in spades. The musicianship of some of these bands is absolutely phenomenal!
I've been listening to rock and metal since I was 14-15. I'm 44 now. My passion for it grows deeper. My tastes have gotten heavier. I even started a metal radio several years ago which ran for 5 years.
.. I haven't grown out of it yet.
