Not just Stone crabs can regenerate limbs (claws, legs) after moults, crabs in general can, but it takes several moults to get a reasonable limbs back. There is a legal size claws can be taken, below it, not. You can take both claws, but if you're ethical you'd only take one, (as they are mollusk specialists, so need to brake shells). One claw is typically bigger than the other, especially on non harvest ones, (that's the one typically taken). The pain part is debate, it said not as they naturally drop them when needed, but evidence says otherwise when the process is forced by humans, so there are places that has banned the practice.
Also, marine biologists have observed that stone crabs tend to change their feeding behavior from a hunter to a scavenger when they've had their claw harvested. So luckily they can still get by while the other one is growing back
I once remember seeing on tv about 30yrs ago (give or take) a Michael Palin travelogue, where he was in a restaurant somewhere in China and their "house speciality" was snake served up skinless - but still alive. And this thing was on a platter writhing around, it must have been in unimaginable agony. I'm not veggie/vegan, but neither do I have any particular affection for snakes, but I wouldn't wish anything like that on one. As far as I'm concerned "live and let live." The Chinese have a notorious reputation in the number and variety of creatures they will consume (and how they consume it,) if it walks, flies, swims or slithers it's fair game. Sometimes I think they're responsible for a species becoming endangered because of their fanatical obsession with it for food or Chinese 'medicine.' I've admitted to not being a vegetarian, but at least in this country animals are farmed and slaughtered humanely.
There's a place in England called Walberswick. It's in the east of England, on the coast. Every year they used to have the British Crabbing Championship and you could buy a t-shirt saying "I caught crabs in Walberswick"😂
A snake head is still venemous. I don't remember which country it was, but a chef died after being bitten by a cobra that he had decapitated 20 minutes earlier.
Yeah that's so messed up! that Jodie left out the 'whats up' :O jk! Poor crabs, poor goats, oh and poor bloomin' snake in whatever docu thingy you were watching Nick Cheers guys! I think we have like 8 out of the top 10 most venomous species here in Australia.I'm not saying they're everywhere though. I've lived here all of my 43 years and only seen maybe 10 at the most. Usually they're more scared of you, they only really attack when threatened, like most animals I guess. Don't let that put you off visiting though
I think I’ve heard that you also have all 10 of the top 10 most poisonous/venomous in 3 different classes of animal - maybe spiders, jellyfish, and snakes or something like that…
@@grabtharshammer I don't know about venomous crabs but I wouldn't put it past us to have them. Edit - there are poisonous crabs here, if you eat them they can kill you, damn crazy.
The crabs can bury themselves in the sand and filter feed. I think the chances of survival are pretty decent. But its pretty mean to say the least lol. I guess its better than killing them outright?
Those that harvest crab arms have observed over generations that the crabs somehow survive without too much hazles otherwise the practice would have been stopped. I also know that there are more crabs in the world than there are human beings to eat them🤔So the crab 'crowd' is unshaken by the loss of arms by a few guys 😂
@@E_y_a_l I'm glad to know. I guess the local population of crabs in those places is being threatened. There would be no need for such a law in the Amazon or Congo basin though 🤔I don't think so.
Who would want to eat an octopus?? They are amazing creatures. Along with dolphins and possibly humans, although I have my doubts about humans, possibly the most intelligent creatures. It's like eating monkeys.
I've seen on other TV shows in the past... Where fishermen who catch Crabs in the US... Will simply remove just one of the Crabs Claws... And then immediately return it back into the Ocean... As they were only permitted to remove one Claw... So that whilst it's missing Claw was growing back... It could still defend itself as well as forage for food with the other Claw... But taking both Claws at the same time... Seems a little bit excessive in all fairness!.
How to make money off the Crabs. Isolate the gene or part of DNA that allows it to regrow limbs, then splice that into the human Genome. It would put Dentists out of business
Having its arms ripped off would make it a little Crabby
Ba-Dum Tsh!
The American is a guy called Rich Hall . Used to be on a lot at one time . He lives in the uk now .
Hall.
He was a tv weatherman in the states for a while, before turning to comedy.
Moe from the Simpsons is based on him
@@happilyeggs4627 I didn't know this! I can just imagine him delivering bad weather news with a deadpan facial expression lol

Rich hall was one of the first wave of American stand ups regularly appearing on British TV. Reggie Yates, Ruby Wax to mention a few.
The American is Rich Hall and he was a regular on shows like QI.
The American guy, Rich Hall, is who Moe from the Simpsons was based on.
I thought you were joking, but decided to check. Fan of both but never knew that.

They only take off one claw at a time, so the crab still has one functional claw until the new one grows back.
Also, marine biologists have observed that stone crabs tend to change their feeding behavior from a hunter to a scavenger when they've had their claw harvested. So luckily they can still get by while the other one is growing back

Crab finds out why he's called Stumpy.
My first thought was humans because if you don’t eat for long enough, your body starts to consume itself but you don’t die when that happens.
Well that gives milk shake a whole new meaning. No wonder crabs go on the attack when they see humans

Poor crab.
Making lizard skin boots from the shed tails of lizards. You would produce one pair every ten years.
If you think this is cruel, definitely don't look too deep into the practices involved with shark fin soup.
Imagine if it landed upside down on the seabed, that would be an extra miserable 12 months.
No! Jody, dont stop! The grip was a bit tight though 😉
The claws do t hurt. They even remove it for self defense

Octopus is very tasty, the thick ones as well as the clever ones.
Amazing, tasty creatures! We caught an octopus once and took it to our local Greek Taverna. They knew what to do with it! Delicious.
More crab impersonations please
When they rip its arms off and throw it back, at least it can't hurt anybody. You know, being 'armless".
So if we can add some crab dna to humans maybe one day people will be able to re-grow body parts in the future?

36% of catch and release fish die within a week so its not the harmless sport that its made out to be plus not all fish get hooked through the mouth.

How do they catch something to eat and feed themselves without claws. UNLESS they filter the mud with their mouths.
