I was doing exactly what you pointed out. That video helped me more than any other swing change. I could never figure out why I was moving off the ball on my backswing. Thank you so much.
This is so underrated. Don’t recall seeing this anywhere else. Not communicated like this at least. When I do it, it feels familiar like when I’m hitting it well. When my game falls apart I don’t get that feeling but don’t know why. In my mind I’m doing the same swing but don’t know what’s missing. This gives me a way to know. Great vid.
Thank you so much for this video. I generally make the tilt properly on the backswing, but have had trouble shifting properly on the downswing. Your illustration of the shift in the tilt of the spine relative to the lead leg makes it so clear.
This helped!!! I rarely comment on vids but I went into backyard and once I understood the sensation it worked like a champ. I’ve been trying to figure out what was wrong with my takeaways for months. Thank you.
Hi. Amazing insight. Explains the reason why I cannot stay centered.. At 78 I have been struggling and now that I have made the changes I have a great deal of improvements. I am most grateful for your tip.. Many thanks
Best video on the turn I've ever seen. I have been taking the club to far inside and moving to far off the ball for 40 years. This is the root cause. Thank you so much for this video. Can't wait to go play and hit the range. Finally I will get consistently in my ball striking. Sometimes I hit it really well but a lot of times not as solid or consistent. I knew the core problem was my initial turn but didn't know how to fix it. Thank you kind Sir!!!
Great explanation here. I've noticed that a lot of people think that they have to get their entire body mass over the inside of their right foot in the backswing. It's really that you're getting that feeling more from moving your hips over the right foot, but your upper torso and head stay more or less where they started, just wound up at the top. I know that was a little convoluted, but hopefully understandable. Lol. I personally feel like I'm lowering my left shoulder down, right on top of the ball. For those people who have always shifted their entire mass to the right, doing it the correct way is going to feel very strange and like you're moving the top of your body left in your backswing.
YES DEMENUS420 . THE MIRROR IMAGE OF OF A REVERSE C FINISH , IS A FORWARD C AT THE TOP OF THE BACKSWING . I tried this Tilt then turn instruction for the first time last evening at the driving range and it is "magic" . I hit the most consistent and crisp golf shots that I have ever hit in a long time. No more over the top shots pulled left of target and no more fat shots caused by swaying in backswing. Can't wait to get out on the course. Thanks
This is the most important thing in a golf swing. I don’t know, why nobody else explains it like this! This was the game changer for me! If you start the swing bad without this spine movement, everything else in the swing goes bad because you start to compensate it with a lot of different bad movements. Thank you for the video!
I think this is why my miss tends to be a pull hook. My chest and pelvis are too stacked when I turn. When I'm hitting well, my lower body is engaged much earlier in the transition, adding some tilt. Thanks Zack. Excellent video as usual.
This might be the best tutorial ever! Thank you! Almost like you were speaking to me! I have had so many peeps tell me to just come from the inside…this actually tells me how!!!
Am able to see the ball. I always had a problem losing the sight of the ball on my backswing. I understand now that I was turning level and not tilting. I went to the range yesterday and OMG was I striking the ball solidly. The only swing thought I had, was to tilt my spine right on my backswing and left on the downswing. Thank you Zack best video on the explanation of the swing
This has been the best explanation to the rotation in the golf swing I have seen. Now I have a much better understanding. I will definitely give it a try. Thanks .
This is one of the most important teachings for suffering golfers. Thank you & I shall practice tomorrow following your great instruction. Looking forward to grasping the essence & learn more from you.
Very nice explanation! I’ve fought a slice for years, but thought I was doing everything right in my turn. Now it makes some sense what I was doing wrong. Never saw anyone explain this before! Thank you! I will be trying this tomorrow.
Wow! That is just amazing. I have struggled with this for so long, actually trying to stop my hips from moving laterally in my backswing because that is what I had been taught. This makes so much more sense and why my backswing is so much inside and I can’t stop coming over the top. I can get away with it, to a degree, with my woods but not my irons, which I am struggling with. I can’t wait to try this tomorrow and hopefully get my swing back. Thank you so much for explaining this so well.
played with a low handicapper the other day, this is what he was trying to describe to me, it Had me searching golf video's about tilt vs turn....I think you nailed it! not sure I can ever make this change after year of bad swings but at least its something new to work on! thanks!
You can definitely fix it relatively quickly. Use alignment sticks! Put one about an 1"-2" to right of your hip and work motion Zach describes in slow motion. Also make sure your right butt cheek slides along and deeper at the top of your swing. Conversely the same thing should occur with the left butt cheek into the follow through. You can practice this with alignment rods and/or in posture with your butt a little away from a wall. Again do this in slow motion. Difficult at first and will feel strange. Start out with easy swings until you can get the feels and gradually ramp up the speed. Physically more challenging moves so it helps to be in shape. Think of Tommy Fleetwood and his finish when practicing. Once you get the moves down you will be shocked how your pattern should be increased Club head speed, better centeredness of contact and better distance control. Film your swing too! Should get the proper feels in a few days and ramp up to full speed in about a week of practice. Initially you will hit some very fat shots but don't get discouraged. You will learn how to get the handle of the club moving up and left through impact. Power!
Hey Zach, this move is unreal and has transformed my iron game! It just seems to keep the club in the slot without any effort. Now striking the ball higher on the club face and out the middle consistently. 7iron distance has gone from around 150 to almost 170 yards with lower launch angle. Thanks!
Super-good explanation of hip movement here, Zach. You are right - this is a subject that is mis-spoken about by most instructors (or at least mis-interpreted by those of us trying to learn it). I'm anxious to see how this insight translates to the driving range!
I was struggling, especially off the tee. Drinking my coffee in the morning I saw a very short clip from Zack showing the tilt to start the swing. I had a round with friends. No time to practice. By hole 3, my swing was so much better and it held up. Everything was better and felt on plane. Anxious to take it to the range.
Very good insight though I have a question. Would it not be better to set up with some left side bend at address to assist getting the correct spine tilt on backswing. Why set up with backward leaning spine tilt only to lose it in the initial lateral flexion. Would not a left side bend set up aid in preventing a too much inside takeaway?
Great observation, I definitely notice that players that have yes golf for many years have too trail side bend at address, and that cause the club to go inside quickly, also they have this issue in their short game.
Yes. His biomechanical concepts of the golf swing were 60 years ahead of their time. If he had more patience and was more understanding I believe he would have transformed the game of golf.
Your description is perfect to teach a hip backward move before body rotation to get the rotation plane more vertically tilted to match the geometry of the stable rotation point being much higher than the ball.
While there is some truth to "not much new under the sun", I do think the swing continues to evolve. Sometimes that even means going back to older ways (like a left wrist flexion at the top of the swing seems to be coming back to some of the tour players). With all the data that has been coming from doppler radar trackers and camera trackers, there is so much more minutia we can understand about the swing...which is both good and bad. Plus, there continue to be new players to the game that get hooked enough to eventually look up a video of how to swing on line and fall down the rabbit hole of excellent teaching tips on YT (both good and bad for sure). So, keep posting those tips even if your repeating yourself, because one of the best ways to learn is to hear the same thing over and over and over. You might not fully understand it the first time, but each time you practice it and hear more from others, you start to understand...then, go back and watch the older ones that confused you and you'll be surprised that you actually now DO understand it. Russell Heritage is great and repeating the core tenets of the swing in videos in new ways (and sometime the exact same ways)...it kind of drills it in over time. Great job :)
Last night I was working out some swing thoughts in my garage and searched spine tilt and found this and got confirmation for the last 10 years I have been doing it wrong. On my way to driving range today to work on this move ... thank you; thank you; thank you!
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. Haven't played for 4 years and haven't been able to pinpoint why my takeaway is slightly more inside than it should be. This did it.
Great idea on how to start the swing by swaying your hips a little to the right. I have been starting my swing at the very bottom and go inside a lot with my clubs thus bad contact with the ball. I appreciate this little "trigger" move instruction. Thanks!
Just been watching Eric Cogorno video and he recommended I check your video out as he said great instruction - certainly is, I’m over range today Zach and I’m just going to concentrate on practicing the movement. Thanks from a dull rainy day in London 😁👍
Hi Zack, I have been teaching this for years with much success. I am glad you’re on track with information that will help all golfers. Good work, keep it up.
After watching my swing on video I can see this is something I have been doing wrong exactly as you demonstrated. Have never seen it explained this well. Thanks
Zack, I really liked this explanation of the backswing. I'd been in "limbo" for the past while and this explanation freed up my backswing and permitted me to engage the downswing effectively. I'm tracking your videos, and really like your approach. Thanks!
yes that is myswing. it works if you release the right wrist properly, along with other timing requirements. thanks for your insight and simplification, though tilt does require yet a different set of movesand timing. i am transitioning to your methodology. thankyou
Brilliant Zach thanks so much. I presume it is same concept of Driver? Also is the first move in downswing to move lower spine latterly? It seems to shallow club so well...
Ty for doing this video. When u mentioned the base of spine moving, immediately it reminded me of Mike Austen's teaching on the pivot. Any thoughts? Your demonstration is very persuasive and makes sense.
100% Mike Austin would have approved of this type of motion in the spine/hips. And this matches up nicely with the snapshot type release endorsed by Mike Malaska Lee District and others who've studied the biomechanics.
@@nicholasdemetriades9154 Lee's recent stuff with Be Better Golf is fantastic. Though I don't get the slapshot stuff, doesn't it go against TGM & Morad ? - both of which Lee is has spent much time with. TGM - uncock and roll. P4 to P6 & even perhaps to P7 I agree with. Wouldn't the slapshot mean switching from forearm rotation coming to impact then none as the wrists go to extension? If you could help clarify I would be grateful.
A little late! Just came back to this thread because I've been playing great lately only because of a stellar short game. My irons have been inconsistent. In response to your query I would say the slapshot type release was only encouraged by Mike Austin in his latter years of teaching. Everything is still releasing freely its just that you aren't as timing and practice dependent as with the forearm roll. Your club head will remain on plane longer hence creating less dispersion.
For the past few years, when I play golf or hit balls, I start to get a pain in my right side. I tried this move you talk about in the video, and instantly my side felt better! Apparently, I've been tilting back instead of slightly forward on the back swing. I'm going to the range today and will get back to you on results.
I practiced this on the range today and got immediate relief from the side pain I was getting. And, I noticed much less pain in my right hip and knee. Did I hit the ball much better?.... Yes, and no. At first I did. But, I'll take it. At 75, I'm just glad I can still play without pain.
Thank you Zach - this is very interesting and has certainly helped me with my irons and hybrids. It is not translating to my driver. I am getting a huge pop up pulling way left. what does that tell you ? i think i am failing to bump back to lead leg.
Hi Ciara, Im sure Zach will answer as a professional but thought i would explain what i found as i was having the EXACT same problem. Mine was that with the driver i was getting very steep on the downswing and also this resulted in general heel strikes, ball popped up and went further up that forward haha, and to the left. My cause was basically using my upper body to soon, spinning out with rotation and not utilising the spine tilt move over my left leg as Zach describes, that move automatically helps shallow the driver. Hope this helps.
Zach, what would be the sequence from takeaway to top of backswing. Another words in what order does everything start back until, you get to the top of backswing. Thanks
Great question, making sure you move the base of your spine laterally before turning back is crucial. Sets the turn at the proper inclination to the ball.
Hi, what is the sequencing of this, do you move the right hip back before you move the club? I have an issue with Flt swing and think I am doing a turn motion as described.
This is Gold, I have been searching for this. I had a hole in on Saturday by getting my shoulder turn right, but couldn't replicate the movement correctly. This drill will help me no end. Thank You Zac.
A couple of questions please Where do you teach? How much are your lessons? Do you have schools? I’m a decent player (USGTF member for nearly twenty years, on Dave Pelz’ instructors staff six seasons after retiring from US Airways, played for my Community College team, etc), but have two problems that I have struggled with forever: early extension and inability to get forward shaft lean. Those certainly aren’t my only problems, but they are my biggest. If I can work with you, would you recommend individual sessions, or a three-day school? My usual thinking regarding schools is (not to sound like a know-it-all) a lot of what gets covered I know already. I have spent a lot of my time looking into swing theory (S & T, The Swing Surgeon-Don Trahan, Hogan’s Fundamentals, Mike Austin, Single plane/Two plane, Gravity Golf, and more), so I think few concepts would be unfamiliar to me. Also, again not to be smug, but I have been to a number of schools where I have been way better than the other people in my group and got short shrift when instructors gave individual help (in one school we had a woman who couldn’t get it airborne and she got about 45 minutes out of every hour and the other guy and I split the remaining 15 minutes!). That’s a waste of time and money. I’m interested in your thoughts. Thanks. I enjoy your videos by the way. I watched the one on the shorter swing today and liked that. I love the way Rahm and Finau swing. One of the guys I taught with at Pelz’ schools swung just like that and hammered it. The thing with them, though, is those guys are all big (Finau and my colleague well over six feet), and Rahm and Finau stand closer to the ball with a five iron than I do for a chip!
Great video Zach 👏 I have tried the lateral shift of lower spine over foot but getting a sort of a push cut i think it is out to right. Any idea what i could be possibly doing to cause this Zach? Thanks so much John
Once your pressure lands left you want to begin rotating. We are talking thousands of a second. If your hips move laterally too far or too long, you are going to miss the boat on rotation.
Probably one of the best pivot examples I've seen to date. This is dead on Mike Austin's method that saves the lower back.
Yes. Exactly Mike was a genius.
I was doing exactly what you pointed out. That video helped me more than any other swing change. I could never figure out why I was moving off the ball on my backswing. Thank you so much.
I've never seen anyone explain the rotation this way. Excellent explanation and demonstration. Thanks

Super Zack. I have been having trouble with my irons. Now realizing I was way to flat in my back swing. This has been a big help. Thanks

Great explanation! I could not believe how this gets my lower body moving correctly - Wow. When I do it right, cross bow straight!
Super-good explanation of hip movement here, Zach. You are right - this is a subject that is mis-spoken about by most instructors (or at least mis-interpreted by those of us trying to learn it). I'm anxious to see how this insight translates to the driving range!

Agree! Excellent explanation of how the spine moves vs hip tune.
I get it now, it's more of a hip turn and then a down swing, instead of a shoulder turn and hip turn at the same time. Excellent explanation!
Very interesting and unique move . I have always tried very hard to not sway hips on the backswing . Seems to work well so far . Thanks so much .
Super good explanation.
Terrific, original instruction.

Fantastic explanation!
Glad it was helpful!
I think loading the right foot to the knee is necessary as well. Good explanation.
Great point that is an important aspect.
After watching my swing on video I can see this is something I have been doing wrong exactly as you demonstrated. Have never seen it explained this well. Thanks
Glad it helped. We should all video from time to time, to make sure we are doing things well.
Thanks this really freed up my swing and improved my timing
Thank you for pointing out this lower back tilt.
Very good point. You are 100% spot on.
Much appreciated
Outstanding lesson. I had never seen this drill.
Wish somehow I could have gotten this excellent lesson 25 years ago probably why my L4 L5 are in such bad shape these days...thanks Zack!
Zack, I really liked this explanation of the backswing. I'd been in "limbo" for the past while and this explanation freed up my backswing and permitted me to engage the downswing effectively. I'm tracking your videos, and really like your approach. Thanks!
Similar move made by Sergio as explained by Brian Manzella
Zach, Just had a AH HA moment. I always thought that was a sway but you explained perfect. THX
yes that is myswing. it works if you release the right wrist properly, along with other timing requirements. thanks for your insight and simplification, though tilt does require yet a different set of movesand timing. i am transitioning to your methodology. thankyou
Fantastic info-I have been absent for a while but back now!
It finally makes sense! Thanks so much for this Zach
Gotta try this. Makes great sense from the master.
Lee Deitrick.(damn spell checker)
This is a really good video; you’re right; the two cameras really helps! Thanks!
Nice explanation !!! A must watch !!!
I absolutely love that move !!! Gonna give it a go. thx
Tks for adding to the confusion.
No problem glad to have helped. 🤣
Great job, if I was in your area I definitely take clases.
Crucial advice, thanks! Mike Austin!
I so needed this!
Zach, what would be the sequence from takeaway to top of backswing. Another words in what order does everything start back until, you get to the top of backswing. Thanks
Great question, making sure you move the base of your spine laterally before turning back is crucial. Sets the turn at the proper inclination to the ball.
Wow great instructional advice on RUclips. Rare! Great video Zach 👍
Thank you for this!
Hi, what is the sequencing of this, do you move the right hip back before you move the club? I have an issue with Flt swing and think I am doing a turn motion as described.
Best video ever, thanks Zach.🙏🙏
Always enjoy your videos. This one is fantastic. Hopefully my brain can process it and I can take it to the course. Thanks.
This is Gold, I have been searching for this. I had a hole in on Saturday by getting my shoulder turn right, but couldn't replicate the movement correctly. This drill will help me no end. Thank You Zac.
A couple of questions please
Where do you teach?
@@ZachAllenGolf excellent thanks a mill for that Zach 👍
Great advice. Eye opening.
Great share.. It clicked instantly to when I First started playing golf and somehow did that naturally but was sidetracked by bad advice
Yes. Me too. Hit it straight and long with a bad grip my first few years!
