    Merry Christmas! I just built one and I used clumping kitty litter. It worked fine and the gravel sticks together after one test. It is really tough to remove the inner can. I live in Costa Rica and I plan on using the stove at the beach to boil water for coffee. Plenty of sand at the beach but I will test the kitty litter for awhile.

    I wanted a reliable , auxiliary , heat source for a Vargo Titanium Hexagon wood burning stove. Needing a little extra height over the shorter Fancy feast can I used a Vienna Sausage Can and inside it the Tomato Paste Can ( full Length ) with carbon felt separating the two different cans. It's a easy to use , light weight , quick to bloom heat source that I'm happy with.

    For the fancee feest I just tried a hackjob simmer ring. It's the bottom of a pop can (I used a large brisk tea can), filing the bottom ring until the concave part came out. After lighting I dropped on the ring.
    here's a photo: imgur.com/uiHHEgx
    I don't think its quite right, but it did lengthen burn times.
    I got 10ml of heet to burn for 7m30s and boiled one cup of room temp water at @4m40s.

    Thanks Hiram you inspired me. Today I made a Fancy Feast type Alcohol Stove with the outer can 10 cm wide and the inner can 7.5 cm. Packed Rock wool insulation between the 2 cans. With a gap of 1 cm it burns very hot and boils the kettle quickly. Cut a 1 cm wide ring from the outer edge of the removed lid from the big can and made a damper. Sitting this onto of the gap lowered the temperature nicely. Cooked dinner, Morrocan chicken curry, on my new alcohol stove and it worked beautifully. My stove collection includes rocket stoves, wood gas stoves, and now alcohol stoves. Your youtubes are great. Thanks.

    • @MrHiramCook
      @MrHiramCook  3 года назад +1

      Good question, Thanks for asking about that.
      The hole is really just a vent hole incase your pot formed a good seal on the top of the stove which would then allow vapor pressure to build up forcing the alcohol up and out of the stove. The chances aren't great that any pot is going to form a good seal but why tempt fate?

    I get what your saying about processed can food but you can use the carbon cat for that too if you heat a vessel of water to boil and put the closed processed can food can submerged into the water to heat like a double boiler. Label peeled of of course. You heat the processed food with the heat of the boiling water. Good vid thanks

    Hey Hiram - a lot of people seem to mention they're having trouble finding Carbon Felt in Canada... I just thought I'd post that you can find it at your local Home Depot.
    I threw a link to it in a post on my new facebook page: facebook.com/Clueless-Survival-477187015799394/
    The trick is, it's called "Flame Protector" and it's in a bag sold by the brand name "Oatey". One package is $16 (Canadian) and has enough to do about 6-7 stoves, depending on how you cut it.

    I use rock wool as my wicking material between 2 cans in my Fancy Feast type stoves. It is expanded basalt and has a very high melting point. So far it has worked very well with repeated burns. I have found that if I pack it fairly tight the stove is more efficient ie uses less alcohol. Thanks again for your videos.

    Hiram, thank you so much for all the information you've put out about these stoves! I have been messing around with alcohol stoves for several years now, but I just couldn't find one that would work for my needs until I saw your version of the Fancy Feast. I live in Alaska, and let me tell you, NOTHING vaporizes in the winter. I built this model stove and took it with me on my last two backpacking trips, and it worked phenomenally well. Thanks again :)

    Can we just figure out how to put some form of simmer ring device for the fancy feast stove? It is easier to get,and it's very robust and dependable,in a wide range of temps and altitudes.so if we can figure out how to get it to adjust heat then it would be a top contender as far as alcohol stove go

  • @oldgeekster1

    Afraid I have to go a little contrary on this one Hiram - when you are first starting out, I believe the little Trangia to be almost foolproof - plus it has a snuffer. One can simply save the left-over alcohol for the next meal. It takes a spell for a beginner to get a feel for how much alcohol to put in the Fancy Feast stove to get the job done without waste. JMHO - and as always loved the video! Max is a lucky guy!

    I carry a Bushbox Ultralight as my pot stand/windscreen so that I can burn wood if I need to. It can hold a trangia. I also made a simplified FF without the central can since I already have the pot stand. It has a simmer mode by leaving out the carbon felt and just burning without it (wouldn't work at low temperatures though)

    trangia do a cold weather pre heater, so your argument carries no weight. The trangia is superior in every way, don't forget the burner is just one part of a cooking ecosystem with many components to suit your own style of backpacking/out door cooking. So if anybody is looking at getting a spirit stove, don't listen to this guy.

    A bit late to the game, but as far as I know, Swedish soldiers carry the filled Trangia inside their coats or trouser pockets to keep them warm. You can do this as they seal tightly and won't leak. Then they work in sub zero, because once they're on they don't go out until the fuel is used up. Hence the seal.

  • @ColoradoCamper
    @ColoradoCamper 9 лет назад +2

    Great video, Hiram. The Trangia was my first alcohol stove and I still use it quite a bit. The only thing that makes the Trangia hard to recommend to a new comer is that there are so many pot stands out there, and many are not very good. Also I would bet that your Trangia with the carbon felt inside would light up no problem in sub zero temperatures. It might take a while for the jets to bloom, but the felt would light for sure.
    Thank you again for coming up with this kick-ass DIY Fancy Feast design!

    Hiram,
    Thank you for all of your great videos. I know that a lot of time and effort goes into them. I also am a big fan of the fancy feast type stove, I prefer to use the entire length of the tomato paste can and a Vienna sausage can. My reasoning behind this is that I don't have to try to extinguish it, cool it and then refill it when I am cooking multiple things and knowing that I will have the stove on for a extended period of time. I also like that I don't have to try to get a precise cut on the tomato paste can in order to keep everything level. This is just my opinion, I think that overall the fancy feast type stove is definitely the way to go. Thank you again for all of your great videos.

      Yes, steel wool (for pan cleanup) work well, inf you comprime then well, after first use the surface became blue (like steel after heat up) and more hard. No idea of long time duration, but seem not affected by burn alcohol. Just don't leave water go inside the stove.

    I agree with your recommendation. Another advantage of the FF - no pot stand required.
    Zelph makes a simmer "collar"? for his version of the FF, which I haven't tried out yet, but if that works, the FF would be able to handle ALL types of cooking. I also like that it holds a lot of alcohol so I usually boil 2C of water first, then another 2C with one alcohol fill. And for simplicity and weight; you can't beat it!!

    • @Rspenesmit
      @Rspenesmit 8 лет назад

      +OldePete I've tried Zelph's stove, it takes a bit longer to boil, but burns a little longer overall, but you can make your own FF stove for practically nothing and his stove is expensive, you can duplicate his by buying the Fiber glass he uses at Walmart in $7 or so packets in the Automotive Dept. I built a FF stove using piece cut from a Blue Bud Aluminum can it fits snug inside and takes longer to boil but lasts much longer than a FF and you don't have to use carbon of Fiberglass.and also I built one using a Vienna Sausage can, inside the FF can, and carbon, it's tall than the tomato paste can and you don't have to cut or trim it down to fit,

  • @jamesaritchie2
    @jamesaritchie2 8 лет назад

    Why can't you do the cold test in Pennsylvania? It gets a lot colder than minus three. I live in Indiana, and I've seen in hit -30F. Anyway, I have three favorite stoves. The Trangia mini is great for small tasks, and the Fancy Feast, or a mod version of it, is perfect for cold weather, but the Pathfinder stove is, I've found, the best by far for preparing an entire meal. It boils water a bit slower because it's so big, but this is a plus, not a minus. Rate of boil time matters only if that's all your stove is used for. When you want to coo entire meals with a stove, slower boil time is a plus because it means you have a more controllable flame with a wide dispersion area. Though it seems a large majority of hikers on the big trails, such as the Appalachian, just use an empty Fancy Feast can, and a foil windscreen, for boiling water. It works, so it's hard to say they're doing anything wrong.

    Oh Nice to be validated in my own top stove choices! Now! Can you ask if someone out therehas--or can you design a sabilizer for the FF? Sometimes it's hard to get a little hole dug in frozen ground to make sure that thing doesn't tip over when I have a larger diameter pot on it. And wouldn't it be neat if the stove stabilizer also reached up and stabilized the pot - and was equally lightweight!

    I haven't seen all of your videos, so apologies if you've already addressed this. A small unused JetBoil fuel canister weighs approximately 200g. I'm eyeballing here but I believe that 200g of denatured alcohol roughly equals 8 fluid oz. However, the JetBoil canister would need to be emptied out and then that weight deducted from the total to determine the actual gas weight. Anyway, once equal quantities are determined and based on weight alone, which burns longer and provides for more cooking time? Gas or alcohol?

      +Bonnie Laughlin Google Oatey Flame Protector to see who has it in your area. I found it at Lowes or Home Depot (can't remember now). It's in the plumbing section. It's used to protect wooden surfaces when plumbers solder copper pipes together. Expensive at about $15 or so for a 9x12" piece. However, 8 stoves can be made from a sheet if cuts are made for max yield.
      FWIW... A Fancy Feast Stove and a bottle of HEET makes a great gift to someone you'd like to see better prepared when storms take down the grid. Nice to have more than one of them to make coffee and fry up some sausage at the same time. Hope this helps.

      www.engineheatprotection.com/rollboard.html
      If it wicks well, then it will be super because it is the best small space heat transfer reducer there is. It may allow the alcohol stove to operate better in sub-zero temps.

    just something I saw for using a butane/propane canister stove in cold weather. They stuck a hot hands handwarmer to the bottom of the canister to make it warm enough to vaporize the fuel. Pretty safe, as they don't get that warm. It is not quite cold enough to try and see if this would make a Trangia bloom in cold weather, but it may make enough of a difference to make it work. I may try it myself when it gets a little cooler up here. I always enjoy your videos and look forward to watching them. Thank you. I would never have considered getting an alcohol stove before I saw you on RUclips.

      +Ramon Haditya There is a fairly cheap seller on ebay, that advertises them for Stoves, I have not yet checked Lowes to compare prices yet, but I will.

      +Ramon Haditya Lowes and Home depot are expensive, build a Fancy Feast stove with no carbon or fiberglass, get a blue bud beer can, cut it to the same height and specs and put inside the FF can, it fits snug and in my tests it burns longer than a normal FF stove and takes a few mins longer to boil, but no Felt or anything else is needed.

    Currently i also have the fancee feest and the alocs trangia knockoff. Same reasons.
    I also got a stove from zelph, the goto stove, which is actually nice. i've only tested it once and haven't yet tried the simmer ring to see if it does the job, esp with dry baking.
    This fancee feest is more durable because of the rimmed tomato can. I've been able to test boil a 2L pot mostly full of water with no problems with the fancee feest.

      +Brian OlseI I use a blue bud beer can cut instead of the tomato paste can and it fits snug with no felt or anything, and it burns longer than the FF stove and takes a little longer to boil, but nothing else is needed.

      +Rspene smit a can or one of those aluminum beer bottles?

      +Brian Olsen The Blue Aluminum Bottles, I find them at small markets in single bottles instead of cases, I cut a piece out of the middle and use it, it fits perfect inside the FF can, also a Vienna Sausage can works if you have the carbon fiber felt or the Fiberglass you find in small $7 or so packets at Walmart in the Auto dept. but with the blue bottles, I get a boil in 9-13 mins in that range each time, and burn out averages around 14-19 and that's with nothing else inside, just punch 2 holes on the bottom of the bottle with a hole punch for the fuel to soak in and 2 holes on top for air.

    Thanks for the video! I'm now curious what stoves you consider the worst?

    • @Rspenesmit
      @Rspenesmit 8 лет назад

      +Jari Perho I've been testing every stove lately I can build or buy or borrow, and the best and worst is whatever your needs are, do you want just to boil water for cooking other things with, and if so, do you want the fastest boiling one out there, if so, then the top 2 or 3 fastest boilers are best on your list, the other dozen are worse, same for baking, simmering and long cooking times, if a stove lasts 10 minutes, you might rank it worse, so it all comes down to a matter of what you need, I like the Alocs over the Trangia because in my tests and other doing both on here, the Alocs always comes out on top, so I like it for baking and long cook times, I like the fancy feast as my best all around stove, good boil time, decent cook time with simmer ring, I used a Capillary stove for the fastest boil possible when I just can't wait, I use the Rolled aluminum stove because I love it looks and design, and it's a good fast boiler and can fry burgers, dogs and other similar foods, I have a bag that I carry them all in with all their accessories, I am not a weight junkie, I carry what I need and use, not the lightest weight possible.
