    I have tried many kinds of stuff for the wick; Jeans denim, blue "shop towels," cotton balls, old cotton T-shirts, and the carbon felt (from Home Depot, DIY/home improvement store. If it will wick the fuel, it will work. If it sticks out too far, you can trim it or push it in further, or it will burn down to where it (wants to be, if it burns away.)
    If you buy a big piece of anything, you can cut strips for making lanterns or stoves, or oil lamps or heaters.
    Save the rest!

    Instead of wrapping the wool two times, you could cut a piece twice as tall and fold it over. Then wrap it around one time with the creased edge up. It would have a cleaner look that way and maybe not burn as easily since its a folded edge instead of a cut edge.

    Hiram, another good video. I make my Fancy Feast stoves using corrugated cardboard instead of carbon felt. Works perfectly. Any cardboard that sticks up above the Fancy Feast can just burns off. The rest of the cardboard lower in the can never burns off. The only negative I have found to using cardboard is if the stove gets wet the cardboard will get loose and not wick very well. I think that any wicking material that does not melt will work.

    Just as an experiment I made one fancy feast burner using paper towels as a wick. I've used it 5 times or so and it works fine. I snuff the flame when it is just about out so as to not burn up the paper towel.

    Lots of carbon felt available on Ebay. I bought my carbon felt at Home Depot beside the copper piping. Its original purpose was to protect wood in your walls when soldering copper pipes.

    The small Vienna sausage cans work as well as Fancy Feast cans and are the same diameter as the Fancy Feast cans, but are a bit taller, will hold more alcohol and will burn a bit longer.

    I built one with used denim, was the lower leg portion...worked great...must extinguish the flame when you smell the wick burning after the alcohol runs dry...this way you could reuse the wick for a very long time...the trick as you know is to time boil times for your recipes and measure your fuel so you won’t run the wicking too dry, and extinguish the flame so you don’t ruin the wick....it’s easily smothered......thank for your vids

    Hello Hiram,
    You had a viewer looking for carbon felt in Vancouver. Your Canadian viewer will find it at Home Depot. It is called a Fire Preventer, is 9 x 12 inches, made by Oatey. Home Depot sells it for 16.50 cdn . It will be in the plumbing section. It is a little pricey, but it is the only source I have found so far.
    Take care, and thanks for all the great videos,

Also, some other good news - lweaver99 has the mojo pot stands available again on ebay. I just ordered one.

    I made a similar stove today using a small Rio Mar tuna can and a tomato paste can cut in half. I just stuffed fiberglass insulation like the kind you would insulate an exterior wall in a house with. I stuffed enough in using a bamboo skewer that the inner can is held in place. I added a few ounces of alcohol and waited a min for wicking to occur and lit it up. It works great and everything is held together as one unit. Honestly it is so simple and cheap and works so well I don't see a need to use any other stove.

    I have this same felt (95% wool) and though it worked, after a few uses it got more and more charred and was shrinking. I don't recommend it unless you're in a pinch.
    Finding the carbon felt is much easier if you ask for "flame protector" as you showed in your other video.

    You should be able to find Carbon felt heat blanket material made by Oatey in the plumbing section of home supply stores like Home Depot and Lowe's (blanket with grommets about 12" wide), but other natural materials like cotton and wool have been used for centuries for wicking.

    Best Alcohol stove ever. None better. Hiram Cook got it right. Do not waist your time on others penny can stoves.
    So easy to make
    The heat out put is the best.
    Not finicky to light or cook. No plume time.
    It may not look , it beat hands down all the inner wall stoves.
    When you want heat and flame to cook, Fancy Feast is the store to have,
    Cost to Make under $2. If you have the cans, under $1.
    Use the yellow bottle gas treatment preservative. It is the best. Beats alcohol 97% No fumes or carbon build-up.

    If you have the time, I am curious how much of a difference is there in cooking time if the felt is below the rim or above the rim of the outer can? If it's above, I think the increased area would allow more oxygen and thus a hotter flame and if below then the restricted oxygen would produce a cooler longer lasting flame. What do you think?

    @bobbyharper8710 9 лет назад

    A couple of things to consider is the Fancee Feest stove from Zelph is close to the cost of a 12x12 square of welding blanket carbon felt. As a bonus the Zelph inner can is a bit wider than the tomato paste can. It fun to DIY but if the goal is to get the best stove then Zelph's wins.

    • @ColoradoCamper
      @ColoradoCamper 9 лет назад +1

      +Bobby Harper Another benefit of Zelph's stove is that the inner can in stainless steel, so it will last a lot longer. I just wish Zelph made the inner can a little bit taller so it would burn a bit hotter and speed up boil times.

    • @Rick-wn5oh
      @Rick-wn5oh 8 лет назад

      For the cost of a Zelph stove you can make 10 Fancy Feest stoves. I've already given away a few. And since it's DIY, the dimensions are really up to you. As far as the Zelph stove lasting longer, I can always find more tomato cans:)
      Now if you watch his video on the Zelph stove, it performs poorly against the DIY stove. No thank you.

    This is helpful for me on the east coast of Canada as carbon felt (welder's blanket) is all but impossible to find. I do have a question about the Fancy Feast stove. What impact, if any does the stand-off distance between the wick and the bottom of the pot have on efficiency?

    • @ColoradoCamper
      @ColoradoCamper 9 лет назад

    Great video Hiram, does the wool felt stink when it starts to char? For some reason I imagine it smelling like burning hair.
    This stove is such a simple design and once you understand how it works then it's easy to think of different things you could use in a pinch. I imagine even paper towel or toilet paper could be used in an emergency though it probably wouldn't last for many burns. If you needed a stove to get boil water or heat chili for a couple of days of a power outage it would probably get you by.
    I wouldn't be surprised if sand would work if you loosely filled the outer can before carefully putting the inner one.
    Am I thinking about a different stove or did you first make one of these using fiberglass muffle wrap you bought from a auto parts store?
    Another thing I can't remember right now is if you ever tested cheap 70 or 91% rubbing alcohol in this stove?

    PROBLEM: I believe it is the black carbon felt that is causing a black smokey layer on my cooking container/pot. Is there a source/type of carbon felt that will NOT create this smokey layer?

      It's probably the fuel not the felt.

    Look up "Miles Stair wicks" on google. He's THE source for all sorts of lamp & heater & stove wicks...
