  • Last Year I came across a rather interesting alcohol stove - stove that included a tripod stand.
I have seen these stands before in the past, in fact I reviewed the Mil-Tec Alcohols stove stand some years back - the problem with that product is that it is difficult to locate.
That’s why when I saw this stove and stand I was intrigued....intrigued enough to order one and to test it out.
This comes from a company called Famgee and this is the Famgee Tripod Alcohol Stove; it is time for my Agenda Free Review.

I've used many stoves in my backpacking life. I started out with a SVEA 123 in the '70s and then upgraded to a Coleman Feather 442. I found white gas stoves heavy, smelly and finicky to use. I got an almost identical alcohol stove around 1990 in San Jose, CA for $12 that is under the SafeSport label. The tripod on my stove is slightly different since it doesn't have springs and the top pot supports can be rotated inward to support smaller pots. Your video on alcohol stoves is accurate. Alcohol stoves aren't as efficient as canister stoves but they are kind of fun to use if all you need to do is boil water. In my opinion canister stoves rule and are cheap, reliable and efficient.

I made a DIY "Fancy Feast" alcohol stove over a decade ago for the price of a cat food can, I piece of aluminum beer bottle, and a piece of fiberglass cloth. Its an alcohol stove; they all have pretty much perform the same. The only reason I'd pay anything close to the cost of this Famgee stove is for the stand.

Hi Luke. Your opening shot showed a Trangia burner so that I what I want to discuss. I've seen several vids from people complaining that a Trangia burner gives a very yellow sooty flame and trying to modify the burner to cure this. Remember that the Trangia is primarily sold with the #25 and #27 cooksets. The burner sits inside an all encompassing windshield. I read somewhere that the Trangia cookset whould be positioned with the air inlet holes facing into the wind. That way, you get a good updraught of air passing the burner and the flame burns blue with more heat. There's nothing that needs to be modified with the Trangia burner. It just needs to be used as the manufacturer originally intended.

    • @Thoringald77

Or you can get a stainless steel kitchen sink drain grate and it'll fit perfectly inside the legs with them all out. I have one that I use with mine sometimes and it works great to support smaller cups or the Stanley cook set that everyone seems to have.

I have one of this stove. You can boost it, by disassemble it, and put some thing between the two layer of the stove, like foil or aluminum can. The Capillary effect will bring more acohol to the hole, and it will burn much hotter, but also run out of fuel faster.

I've built a bunch of tin can stoves, tiny to Arizona or Foster's sized. Tripod pot stands from bent light stainless rod, bottom pan and wind screens from aluminum flashing or even foil. They ain't rocket science. It all ends up being pretty light. The smaller ones are going to be more economical. I carry one of mine in the van. Cup sized bag, wind screen cup stand, bottom preheat pan and alcohol squeeze bottle, all in the cup. Somewhat slow, but quiet. This one is, a little fiddly and I can see the problem with the stand and small cups. That whole cage is heavy. I think if I were to buy something commercial, a Trangia would be more convenient.

Hi Luke! Saw this stove in one or more of your adventures and decided to get one for myself. Your pro's and con's are right on the money for this stove. I found the stove to have a pretty decent output, but you really DO need a windscreen of some sort, to direct the heat to your pot/pan/cup. Been thinking of an add-on that would make the stove more useable with smaller cups and pots. If I come up with anything worthwhile, I will share with everyone. I would say the stove is an excellent value for the money, though. Definitely watch Lukes video on alochol stoves!

One of the challenges I've experienced with this stove is the volume that can be used. My cat can stove is only half the volume capacity. You have to either let a ton of alcohol burn or figure out a way to snuff the flame when you're done cooking. Its cheap, it works, and has a decent folding stand, but it's not ideal for backpacking IMO.

  • @WilliamSchmidtOD
    @WilliamSchmidtOD 2 месяца назад

Stove works well. Have had one for well over 10 years. Bought it from Sportsman's Guide. For someone who posted earlier. The legs and pot support have an angle to them. They are not flat. The ends are higher then the parts attached to the stand. When folded in it takes on more like a diamond shape and would not be stable on the ground or the pot.

I bought this stove several months ago and Luke’s review is accurate, can’t beat it for the price but you will need a wide pot and a windscreen. I don’t know if it means anything but this stove burns with a blue flame unlike most alcohol burners which burn yellow. My go-to alcohol stove is a Trangia or Evernew burner inside a Zen Triangle stand.

I like the 'gadget aspect' of alcohol stoves. They're interesting and fun to play with and I have a few, including a cat food can stove I made myself but for anything other than one night in nice weather, I'm packing my Soto Amicus! 😄 Don't forget, you gotta pack enough alcohol to run the stove, so for overall weight, the canister might prove to be the lighter choice as well. Alcohol's better in freezing temperatures but at 61, I don't winter camp much anymore, so the Soto Amicus is a better choice for me.

What’s very interesting this is not a new Stove at all. In fact, this is very similar to my first Stove from 1995. At that time it was sold by Sportsman’s Guide under the name “safe sport “I’ve seen it under several other names including ‘stansport’ and ‘Simon’. In fact, Simon seems to be the most common name for the Stove. My original 1995 copy did not have the locking legs but other than that it seems to be almost identical. Mine came with a pleather pouch not nylon.
As far as cons go, my thoughts are the same about zero simmer ability. In addition, the stove has a very large capacity, which seems like it would be an advantage however, in my experience, it takes Stove a really long time to bloom with a full load of fuel , therefore I would only fill mine about halfway. I did have a failure of one of mine what it happened was I had left some methanol fuel basically yellow bottle heet in the stove overnight. When I went in the morning, the aluminum inner sleeve had completely corroded. There was no longer a gap between the inner sleeve, and the outer cup and flames no longer came out of the holes. It would still burn, but not nearly as efficiently that’s an important thing to always store empty, it can be tricky because if you miss judge how much fuel to put in it, you’ll have leftover fuel and it’s problematic pouring it out with all the little holes like a dribble glass.

Bought one of these out of curiosity about three years ago. Sent it back. You can't store unused alcohol in it. I'll stick with my Trangia burner, ( now 30 years of service) and a Trangia triangle which can be set up for alcohol or gas. With alcohol, the little cross bars available on Amazon for the Trangia take smaller pot sizes within the Triangle if need be. Alcohol when time is not an issue. Gas when it is.

I will never buy another alcohol stove based on whether they have a sealing lid. Both my Trangia and Red camp burners distorted from the heat after a couple of burns and no longer seal properly. I'm pretty good at judging how much alcohol I need for what I'm cooking so I'll stick with that.

@@ernieschatz3783 Quite amazed at this. I have a couple of Trangia alcohol stoves bought with different cook sets. My oldest is 30 years my 'youngest' two years old. I have never had a problem with sealing and on my 30 year burner, I've cleaned the burner and kept the rubber ring in the lid lubricated so the rubber doesn't dry out. It's the original ring and I've used it probably hundreds of times over the years. In fact I've replaced pots but never the burner sealing ring.

I tried to make my own alcohol stove the other day and it wasnt lighting so i shook it and covered myself with flaming alcohol panicked then knocked over a liter of alcohol witch engulfed my hole garage in flames like a white snake concert. Luckily had a fire extinguisher on the wall witch put out the flames.

My little Lixada titanium alcohol stove will whip that thing's butt in a boil test. I swear I have to watch that little stove like a hawk. No way it takes anywhere near 10minutes to boil 2 cups of water.

I was beginning to wonder if it was some kind of Mandela effect happening to me as until your reply it seemed nobody remembers sport billy except me. Yeah showing my age. How great would it be if we had such a thing as a sport billy bag eh, you could just bring and pull out castle with you when camping lol. 😉 😁

It may hang off center, but that strap probably isn't going to rip open the seam since it's stitched into it.
    Durability over style on that

That stove is not efficient, a lot of the flame is outside of the pot and the heat is being wasted. It's also huge, heavy and fugly.

Always this talk about spirit stoves beeing slow and inefficient... If you are in a hurry when you are out in the woods you missed the whole point of beeing there. Those extra minutes it takes to boil some water is an excellent time to look around and slow down your mind... Just my two cents.
