      That was fabricated for the TV show they did in 2013, they were created because their management company's previous girl group, Eternal, were in the verge of disbanding. Plus, don't get too brave because Michelle was great for harmonizing and whatnot - but lead singing wasn't really her thing.

      @@iampause Oh god haha SO TRUE about Michelle, absolutely AWFUL lead singer. I'm a firm believer in girl groups that if everyone is to sing lead, they all should be on the same level or there abouts, everytime Michelle sang solo it's like nails down a chalk board, and Beyoncé had the nerve to say LeToya was tone deaf? But let Michelle have leads? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 LeToya clearly isn't tone deaf, but Michelle to me is.
      Having said that I used to be a bit harsh on Kelle when she sang solos in Eternal songs, but appreciate her vocals a lot more now than I did in the 90s, I guess anyone being in a group with Easther and Vernie was going to struggle somewhat.

    • @theunimpressedbeetch
      @theunimpressedbeetch 2 года назад +4

      Honeyz was never poised to be a rival to Destiny's Child, it was just Big Reunion saying that. Cause LeToya alone can devour all three of them when it comes to singing. Maybe Celena can go toe to toe with her but LeToya will be the clear winner. However Naima and Farrah perhaps can battle it out... but probably will have no clear winner at that battle.

    Also when Mariama started with Solid HarmoniE in 1996, they were signed in the States with Lou Pearlman who handled NYSNC and Backstreet Boys. They were poised as the female version of BSB because the music they did were very similar. They also toured with them in the 90s. After Mariama left Honeyz, she actually moved to the States to become a solo performer. She toured with O-Town who Pearlman also managed but nothing materialized on her solo career. So she moved back to London to study midwifery.

    Great video as always. I remember the Honeyz among a wave of girl groups in the late 90s (including Solid Harmonie, Mariama's old group, who actually had 3 top 20 hits). They had some good songs; shame that second album never quite happened though.

If you watch the Big Reunion, there's old school footage clips of Celena rolling her eyes at Heavanli and putting her fingers in her ears when Naima sang. Lovely songs, but immaturity and too much ego all-round (except Mariama) was the reason for their demise, imo. Great doc all round! ❤

    Honeyz was actually a revolving line up even before Celena joined. Heavenli was the first member, and they revolved around her and she had been signed with their management for at least 2-5 years before Celena joined the band. After Celena joined there was another girl named Charmaine. But she was let go because according to Celena, Charmaine was the darkest member of the group and replaced her with Naima. The follow-up album several tracks of it were recorded with Mariama but since she left, Heavenli came back to continue where the group left off. It was bizaare. Also during their tour on Australia, they used a decoy to fool the crowd from believing it was Heavenli because at that time Heav already walked out on them, and the internet named her as Fake Heav.

    Also Heavenli only walked out on them 2 times... the first was when she walked out on them in 1999, and the second one was in the summer 2015 in the eve of releasing their single "Definitely Something"... because they were doing Honeyz as an unsigned act and it was difficult for her to keep using her own money to fly from Portugal to UK to do shows. The one in 2006, she got pregnant and had no choice but to leave the band, so I'll give her that.

    Heavenli is honestly one of the most beautiful looking women ever. They were never right when she left, as much as I love Mariama we knew one another quite well back then, absolutely lovely girl, had a hellish time in the group, she never really settled in, the chemistry was off, it's unfortunate when Heavenli came back, instead of Celena and Naima grabbing the 2nd chance with both hands, Celena particularly didn't make it easy for Heavenli who came back to a very hostile work environment, Celena as talented as she is unfortunately blames everything on Heavenli without taking any accountability for her own behaviour. They truly could have gone onto great things, but could never keep it together for very long.

      @@iampause We can always disagree my friend, it's rare when we do that's for sure.
      I loved Heavenli, I think she brought a level of sophistication to the group and a great unique voice, with Mariama they were more polished for sure, much more commercial looking and sounding, but I felt they just became like any other girl group at that stage, all singing, all dancing, all smiling, which isn't bad of course and I still loved them, but I felt the essence of the Honeyz and what set them apart went with Heavenli and the chemistry was a bit off with Mariama for me, and Mariama always used to love joking with me that Heavenli is my fave 🤣🤣🤣.
      But I can't disagree with you about the commercial appeal with Mariama V Heavenli, though their biggest singles were with Hev (the first 2), Love of a lifetime is my fave song by them, but again I can't disagree with won't take it lying down being their peak, it's a bop for sure, I always felt talk to the hand was a perfect follow up for that, it would have been a big hit had they got it released and promoted properly.

    I would not say that they were hugely successful, plus, their album only peaked at number 33 in UK, but I remember falling instantly in love with Finally found and End of the line and absolutely loved the production of Won't taking it lying down. These kind of bands don't really last long, unfortunately, because they are young and have ambitions of their own (I mean look at Geri leaving the Spice Girls in the middle of the world tour, that was tragic and disrespectful). Eternal had the similar story, I believe, which is why they ditched from the US market. I think Honeyz would've had one hit in US and then would fade away. Mis-Teeq had a good chance, but a similar story, I believe?!

      @@Right_Direction_ She had some highlights on that album, and she did some singing and rapping on it - but not necessarily all of the background vocals and harmonies. Celena's voice was layered a good amount of times so they could get harmonies, thus said by Celena herself - they'd also use session singers (like the one you hear on the first three Honeyz singles) so the songs could sound more proper vocal-wise. Heavenli doesn't have a bad voice, but she bragged too much about Naima during The Big Reunion - when in reality their vocal range wasn't so different. In my opinion, Mariama was what the group needed - a great singer, great dancer and great personality/charisma.

    • @Right_Direction_
      @Right_Direction_ 2 года назад

      @@iampause I think both Celena and Heavenli had their vocals doubled and tripled on pretty much every song. If you listen to songs like Seems Like, Somebody To Love Me, Good Love, Just Let Go, Wonder No8, Love of a lifetime most of those vocals are Heavenli doing the bass and alto and mezzo-soprano, she has a very distinctive voice, reminds me a lot of T-Boz or Kandi from XScape with a touch of Sade, it's a very similar tone and range to Sade. Celena is more dominant on Do Me Baby, What does she look like (only her vocals are on it), In the Street, Finally Found. Steve Levine who co wrote and produced most of the vocals on that album said that Heavenli did a bulk of all the background work, that's why you also hear a drastic difference in their sound to the tracks Mariama was on, they did have additional singers on some songs to balance it out, they even kept Mariama's vocals on the 2nd album tracks and just added Heavenli, several tracks you can hear both of them.
      Heavenli didn't sound so good on the big reunion show, trying to shout too much, I don't know why.
      If you listen to finally Found, End Of the Line and Love of a lifetime on their album "The collection" they are the demo versions on there, much more stripped back and you can really hear how dominant Heavenli was in their backgrounds, i think she and Celena complemented one another so well.

      UK labels never take UK Soul and r&b seriously. They don't get the right backing and are messed around by executives, A&Rs and managers. Often they are sent to America to get the exact production the yanks have or to show more skin, tits and ass - changing their whole style. This is what happened to Cleopatra.

      Lol . I think it’s tricky for UK acts trying to do RnB. They usually start of that way then eventually go pop . RnB in the UK, unlike the US , I think doesn’t have its own charts or huge fan base. To sell records in the UK as an RnB artist you have to eventually go pop . Look at Craig David or JLS for example. Also UK RnB groups understandably have a hard time trying to conquer the US RnB scene because who wants to listen to Craig David when you’ve got Joe, Jodeci or R.Kelly to choose from lol. Hence you get shitty songs masquerading as RnB e.g East 17’s cover of US RnB group Shai song ‘If I ever fall in love a again ‘. What a travesty. They murdered that song.
