It doesn't really matter whether you win the poxy award or not - this is a superior song to anything I've heard in a very long time. It's poignant, authentic and speaks about an issue that so many have been sadly touched by in our communities. They'll probably pick some polished turd that the industry execs feel should be the next big thing and, as usual, miss out on what is truly meaningful. The passion and pain behind your songs is what music is truly about. Keep pressing into the climb. EDIT: he won.
If you hear the news about some flood, that's me crying after listening to this masterpiece. Remembered all the hell I went trough, the song has a very deep and important message. Moreover it's very good itself. And Sam is great. Definitely best thing I've heard for 5 years.
Im a 40 year old man from the mountains of Northern New Hampshire. This song kicked me right in the face, this version specifically. Very small town, winter more than half the year, poverty all around, it’s a rough life for most. Half the men (boys) I went to school with are dead, or dead inside. When I see them I recognize their faces, but not their eyes. Opiates have gripped these mountains like a fucking noose, it’s absolutely devastating to watch, and live with on a daily basis. Everyday I hear of a new death, a new overdose, and it makes me fucking anger. I’m not a saint, I’ve battled my demons and lost many times. I just hope this can reach someone, and let them know there is help, you’re not alone. Reach out, anytime.
21 year old from southern NH here. The amount of friends I have back home that struggle with mental health is staggering. I was lucky to grow up in a middle class family (basically first gen out of poverty - my dad grew up eating a lot of government cheese lol) so I can't imagine what's its like in a more economically impoverished and isolated area. Sam's music speaks for so many of us - cool to see another granite stater as a fan ;)
This hits home. We all tussle with the black dog. Some out loud, some in silence. And is the silence that kills. Talk, ask, reach out. Someone will grab your hand. If no one, a song can make you feel seen. And not alone.
Go see him ... Sam's excellent live. But a room of 200 in London ain't gonna happen much longer! 1500 @electric brixton next Feb ... and the brits. That's where things will 🔥
Anyone else feel every hair on their body prick up on that first vocal? Sam you are an extremely talented man not only is your voice like silk, but the lyric's you share with us are truly special and felt by many
Sam never ceases to amaze me, great voice, songwriter and visionary. Dead Boys and The Borders makes you sit back and think. You got a big fan back here in Pennsylvania.
Congratulations dude and you're a winner for being nominated. You don't need the award to cement your place in the music industry. You've done that yourself.
out of all the artists, old or new, bringing out new music in 2019, i'm the most excited about your debut album. everything youve put out so far has been incredible. keep up the great work
Saw you live earlier this year supporting Catfish and the Bottlemen at Newcastle. Absolutely awesome live. Glad you're starting to get the recognition you deserve.
Thank God for Sam who is a TRUE musician and songwriter! I'm so blown away by the poignant topics and real life experiences put into music that feel like a wave crashing over me every time I hear them! THIS is what music is! THIS is music was meant to be! What really sticks with you in a lot of Fender’s songs is the bewilderment that he doesn’t have the answers. "How am I supposed to change it if I can’t see the wood for the trees?"
I watched a couple of songs from live lounge and in the last day have just been binging your tunes. You sir are a talented young man, looking forward to an album
I heard this song the first time two days ago, it's amazing. I can't believe I haven't heard your music till now- I and everyone else deserve recompense for you not being more well known
Sheer talent! This performance literally gives me shivers down my spine. Sam deserved this award, 100 per cent. Anyone who has experienced the honour of seeing him live will know he is destined to be a superstar. He is already my favourite singer-songwriter and he hasn't even released his debut album yet! GENIUS ❤️
Wow. I can only imagine what this would have done if it had been created/released when our dead-boy epidemic started(N TX 1980s)... I am haunted by those who cared but couldn't help or understand.

Finally someone giving crappy Ed Sheeran a run for his money. Sam is basically the 2019 version of Bruce Springsteen, singing about life of the common people. Very relatable.
Fair play lad. Being gay with what I assume a Islamic heritage. Fair F’n play. From a “norf fc” Brexit voter... keep it up fella, F theology mate and F orthodoxy.
I was out for a run with Spotify feeding me what it wanted to when this version of Dead Boys came on and at the peak it stopped me in my tracks. Was on for a 15k record too. Instant fan.
I hope other artists would be more open like you and write songs about mental health and suicide, which is what everyone needs to hear right now. Congrats on Critics' Choice nomination, Sam!

I've lost over 20 friends to heroin, fent, & suicide in the last 15 years all mostly male. It's a wound that never scars over. Gone but not forgotten. Love you & miss you fam. 💕
Let’s be honest, for us we want to keep him a secret, for him we want him to become famous and get the recognition he deserves...
THIS
I'm American, and watching him. I don't think it'll be a secret for long. ;-) He has real talent for sure!

Agreed. He is the most important artist I have heard / seen in the past 5 years.

Sam is an exceptional talent. I had a brother that died from pills and booze. This song hits home like a bolt of light to the brain.
i get more chills hearing him live than i do in studio AND THATS SAYING SOMETHING
Always over produced it seems with many artists these days. I could be wrong mind

This song is a MASTERPIECE.

This young lad writes with so much maturity and delivers beautifully sincerely. Keep going Sam.
Brilliant voice, brilliant song. Does anyone else hear a touch of Daughter here?
Not really but both brilliant songs. Daughter is one of my favourite PJ songs.
Maybe a bit. But this is way better.

This is such a powerful, emotive song about a subject that people find incredibly difficult to talk about! This young man is going to be a Superstar!
An incredible performance. The way how keeps the performance intense throughout the whole song an he's just performing it by himself. amazing!
The emotions this stirs is amazing, Love the studio version but this? Takes it to a different level that i didnt think it could go to, Stunning
OMG he is an amazing song wrighter. His songs are so powerful!

What a voice. What a beautiful human being. Can't wait to see him in Cologne and Munich this April.
The minute he opens his mouth you listen...amazing !
What a voice, damn. Not just the physical voice, but the lyrical voice as well. This generation has a voice here as well.
Wow a U47 (U48 maybe?) blended with a 441!!!! That sounds wicked on Sam's voice.
Where's my audio engineering fam at?
Hail hail. Best new music I've heard in years. Saw SF solo and with band this year, and many more times will follow.
Selling out two nights at the O2 in December 2024. You need to apply for a ballot to see him in Newcastle.
