It's 2023 and it still gives me the feels like the first time I heard it.
Agreed. Ben's raw despair is still so powerful today
I’m with you on that my man!
I literally heard it today for the first time... I thought nothing in music would ever move me anymore. oh how wrong I was
maybe now the time it is to grow up finally... 😂
I saw Ben play on Later at the time and have revisited this video rather a lot…still wonderful ❤️
We're all in agreement right? This is the best performance Later...with Jools Holland has ever seen.
Agreed, what could top it?
Bon Iver, Skinny lover is close ..

The Burns Unit - Send Them Kids To War....Not saying they're superior, but I think they affected me the way this affected you.
@@fintanocarroll7909 Love a lot of these performances
he captures the chaotic, almost manic side of pain in a way that i’ve never heard any artist do before. i’m yet to find a more painful, raw performance. truly amazing
I’m new to this song but the emotion conveyed reminds me a lot of Bon Iver’s Skinny Love, that was done on the same show. Both convey the pain and tiredness of putting everything into a relationship only for it to fail.
Well worded ! Intellectual statement x
Pearl jam black like is pretty deep too, go check it out i think it's the unplugged thing
Go listen to Damien Rice
Agree on the quality, but check Chris Cornell unplugged and live concerts if you want to find something amazing
the sound engineer NAILED this one
MathewNewsam You think? I am not satisfied. Compare this to the Tiny Desk concerts on RUclips (and basically all the NPR concerts like Bon Hiver). In fact the Jools Holland performances I listened to online could have been much much better (purely talking sound-wise).
You are mistaken. Ben Howard NAILED this one. The sound guy just did his job
@Tom's Songs I feel the riggers and the sound tech did a good job and helped the performance get just that bit better
@@Jamajalama Come on man, no need to disrespect anyone. Without good sound engineers your favourite performances would sound like shit. Respect the people who let the artists shine
@@WarButler That utterly disrespects the entire sound engineering field.
It took me 42 years to find the most beautiful song in my life
I didn't find ben until i was 50. Thats 10 years ago.. What a talent he is.
As he screams “what the hell, love” into the guitar, few performances come close to that level of immersion. It’s almost a live demonstration of the manic agony he felt at the time of writing it. Completely entrancing on every level.
I’m going through something right now and this performance makes me feel somehow listened to and understood
Hats off, Ben
Im there too. 😢
Oath man, hope you’re doing well brother x

When he shouts into his guitar I feel like I'm invading on such an intimate moment. Amazing.
spot on
Helen your comment literally gave me goosebumps. It is exactly how I see it
Yeaaah, it's like I wanted to close the door from outside.
Feel like that throughout the whole performance. So intimate like they're all closed in that world. And India and Ben looking at each other from the shadows is so hmmm... subtle and anxious. It's like she knows that hell and he lets her be a visitor not an invader

Yooooo man that so real, deep

Major props to the camera operator. The choices of close ups and movement were impeccable, really added to the music in the video.

Wow, what a soul searching time. That's awful.
Left-handed, particular guitar playing, unusual tuning, special way of singing... almost tribal... it blew my mind... it's a trance as much as a song.

Just curious, but what is the point in these comments about "who's watching in 2021"? If it gets a response within this year then presumably yes. But as I'm sure is the case for many others, as well as myself - yes, I am obviously watching it now (which is 2021) but have been listening to this song for the last year or 2.

I just cry. 16 wonderful years together. 4 years going through a messy divorce. And less than 7 minutes for Ben Howard to make me relive it all. Took her nephew on as an apprentice at my painting and decorating company. Good lad but it hurts to hear how well she's doing now with her new man.
Listen to this on repeat every night when I get home from the boozer. Drunk tears streaming down my face. Sobbing. Nose running. Fists clenched. Head all over the place. Sometimes I get so angry I smash up the living room.
Only Ben Howard can do this to me. Cheers.
Hey Baz, sorry to read you are going through this stuff man. I know it's hard but you owe it to yourself and those 16 years to let yourself feel at peace. Drinking doesn't help, I've been there and when we are sober again we are still there facing this pain. Get help my friend, whether that means looking at your activities around drinking or your mental health, or both. People want to help. Friends, family, or complete strangers if that is easier. You are more than the sum of a relationship. I hope you find some peace my friend and reach out here if you ever need a chat. All the best Baz. Don't forget that people want to help and listen.
@@onthetrail506 omg that was so kind..
@@jodierickey9307 thanks Jodie, I just hope Baz is OK and has reached out to someone. Feeling so desperate is a terrible weight on a person. And men often don't feel that they can talk to other guys about how they feel, we do that whole macho I'm alright thing when we are not. And people need to be kinder to each other I feel, there is enough heartache in the world at the moment.
@@onthetrail506 Baz, I see you too and can feel your pain.. we have all made mistakes and have regrets..we can't change the past but we can go into battle with those mean inner thoughts in our head that want to bring us down .. to claw our way back to happiness. I really hope you find it.

I love every aspect of this song but I would really like to tip my hat to the bass player standing in the shadows. A master of of his instrument, he brings so much depth to this song. Not there to over play, or show off, he just plays his role in making this masterpiece as perfect as he can. Bravo ❤
Holy shit shit what a song
Love it
Mickey Smith is a legend!
Danny Thompson, who played on the real Jon Martyn’s albums is the bass player for me. ( check any pentangle or nick drake)
As for the 'cellist! The subtle percussion, too. What an ensemble.
The first part was like accepting the end of the affair, the last screaming part was the deepest part in him that still unable to cope with it
For me this was Ben at his peak. He had started to steer away from the mainstream music that had made him so popular to create stuff that he actually wanted to make. This was a sort of halfway house between that mainstream music and the abstract/creative rabbit hole that he has since gone down. His current stuff is above my head and not my cup of tea but I respect the journey he’s on. Would have been all too easy for him to have kept churning out radio-friendly pop songs that he hated and made a fortune. He’s doing what he wants to do and as long as he’s happy, that’s all that matters.
Summed up perfectly 💯.
I found it similar with John Martyn ….loved his early stuff but lost the joy in his more experimental years, but now at 67 looking back over it , the man was a genius and his experimentation deserves our attention, it’s never too late to open that door ….Ben reminds me very much of that genius too
one of the beautiful aspects of Ben’s songs lies in the fact that you can listen to them a thousand times and they will always bring something new to you. always, period. remarkable talent.
Couldn't have said that any better

I don't know why but this song just won't let me go. It's in my head. In my heart. I cannot understand how do you move on from love, how do you even start to do that. How do you cope with losing "us" and becoming just "me" when all you wish for is one more time together, one more chance, a silly joke, or a lazy sunday afternoon in bed together planning that amazing future that will never happen. Heartbreaking, really. But damn - Ben sings about it so beautifully that you almost want your heart to be broken just to relate to this masterpiece. Thank you Ben for being you and doing what you do.
Υou described it perfecly my dear. My thoughts exactly.
You have a fantastic way with words and you use it well, lovely comment.
You don't move on, because the love is never gone. Those moments really did happen, and they are still as real as they were then. Don't grieve the future that didn't happen. Embrace the past that did, treasure those memories. But live in today, be you. Gift your love to someone, every day, over and over. keep chasing your dreams. That special someone will come again, and this time "that amazing future" will just happen, you wont need to plan in because you'll live it.
Or at least that's how i see it :)

@Andrew Salter Hardly amateur hour, just very different styles. And of course, not at all comparable. Ben's strengths is his songwriting and storytelling. Something that is very lacking in the modern metal scene.
For me he's on another level to any other singer songwriter out there. Everything seems so personal with him. When he's screaming in to the guitar pick up at the end I can feel it. Same with his albums, they're unique and emersive. Unbelievable

I've watched this a few times and only just realised that the drummer and the double bass player are the same person. He lays the instrument down gently, walks around behind the lights, sits down and hits the first kick drum in perfect timing. Bravo, sir.

quite possibly the most powerful live performance ive ever seen. years later i still come to witness it. Makes me feel i am not alone when im in serious pain and the im not the only one struggling. Thank you for that Ben.
❤
Love the delayed reaction from the crowd after the song.. Needing a moment to land back on earth
RUclips respects this performance so much I've never seen a single ad. Ever.
That’s right lol I come back every month and still no ads 🤔
Saw him live last Friday. He opened with this... life changing performance.
"Living without her
living at all
seems to slow me down"
Update: I used to be a simp lol. Hope everyone is doing well!
+Daniel Washford exactly the guy is incredible with words let alone his music to go with it and his performance
it's certainly hits home
Such a song can be written only by somebody whose love gone bad... And I can truly understand his passion...
There are people that sing songs, then there's Ben Howard, who projects songs directly from his soul. All the feels!
Its watching john Martyn as a child and lifes experiences thats projecting from this guys soul ,he couldn't have learned from a better guy especially with demons !!!
What a musical genius. The way he loses it and screams into his guitar at the end just grips my heart every single time.
Loses it? He screams into the guitar for the effect lmao
This is why we HAVE to save the arts. Listening to this song brings up the deepest emotions. I turned this corner and found a surprise..
What do you mean save art? There are thousands of amazing artist out there. Are you saying this because its not played on the radio?
Do we have to save all the arts ?
Just continues to get better each time I listen, and better live, than on his records.
he sings and plays like he's got a fire inside him . Ben howard is in my opinion the Mozart of our time .
+Nicola Gregson i got the same opinion, but schhhht ! Keep that secret, too many people won't like it ;)
pffft okay then haha
James Guvercin what!! Like you can do better? How can you not appreciate his musical talent?!!
+Nicola Gregson Even my nan likes Ben Howard. He's a fuckin legend producing quality tunes
+Dean Well exactly he is music for nans. Look you just can't compare a child prodigy and genius to this guy.
Ashamed to say I have just watched this for the first time ! WOW what a track, what a performance. This is going on my top playlist. Incredible.
And yet you still beat me by a month! Agreed, wow! What a find!
It’s incredible. Kind of intensity you don’t get in much music. Especially now now!
Congrats - your life has officially changed!
This has been recommended to me for years now but I only took the time to listen to it last month. What moves me almost as much as the music are the comments.
This man knows what it’s like to lose that special person, what a masterpiece.
Your comment made a thought cross my mind.
Maybe that someone wasn't so special after all.
Maybe that person was just the mirror to the lovers own soul.
Nothing was lost, because it came from, and has always been, you.
@@FrainFreeze Hey I just came across this comment and thats so beautiful it made me cry, thank you.
@@beansontoast5164 💛
@@FrainFreeze in need of that kind of perspective at the moment. Thank you
When someone special leaves your life, it hurts and sometimes you never recover, or ever can.
Do you think that someday this man woke up and said "Lets make a song about lost love and regret?" There's real pain in this one. His own.
One of the greatest musical performances of all time. No hyperbole.
Anything dramatic happens in my life I play this song. I've been here every day this week. He makes me cry in the nicest way possible. My heart is broken for so many reasons and he heals me.
Yasmin kelly, heads up girls, stay strong what ever it takes,we are stronger than anything in this planet😊
I'm the same, its a spiritual thing connecting with desperate emotions but in a controlled manner through a song. Love and peace to you.
still come to watch this almost every day. can't get over how amazing this performance is
Second this !
Belter
I listen to this in bed every night nearly. Trying to get over someone, proving difficult. This helps strangely
Exactly the same, I end every day with this song.
I've never heard so much emotion, so much desperation and so much love in one song....
I love when he screams at his guitar for echo..so talented and creative..goosebumps man real music right there!!!
That bit is unreal man
Seriously one of my favourite tracks. Such an incredible performance not only by Ben but the rest of the band as well.
Absolutely! I hope the band gets the probz they deserve, wouldn't be fair if only Ben is focused, although, hands down, he is the big genius
I recently discovered ben Howard. He has a way of transporting his pain into your own heart. Not had a good day today. Sitting here listening to this.. 😿
Tomorrow will be better
A n u
There is an air of sadness all around lately. Don't despair as you are certainly not alone. I cycle every day to a new place I've not been and this gets me through. I wish you well buddy.
He'll help you through believe me 💜
The two halves of this song are like two parts of a person's emotional termoil. Knowing that something is over and the sadness that it brings vs the anger of rejection and guilt. I love Ben Howard and his band, every song takes me on an emotional journey. The passion that is put into the music translates perfectly every single time it's played and is only conveyed tenfold live. Goosebumps
I'm watching this from my bed suffering with corona-virus and it's better than any medicine. 🙏
God bless you dear, get well soon🙏💐
Simply a masterpiece of a performance. I've watched some great performances on the show over the years but none to rival this.
Why are we limited to just one ‘like’ on this performance, it just doesn’t do it justice. This is musicianship on another level. Brilliant
the camera work to pull in when he's singing into the guitar at 5:57 is exceptional
I love it when people appreciate shit like this ❤️
Yes, the intimacy it gives is so much purer than if there was a cut.
I listened to this multiple times when my sister died suddenly.
Then album had only just came out.
There are probably comments of mine years previous.
Anyway,I couldn’t listen to the album because everything related to her death. If not obviously I made it fit.
I’ve returned for a listen if this track.
MASTERPIECE of playing and writing.
Peace to all humans ✌🏻🏴
I'm so sorry for your loss. That's such a painful thing to go through. I hope you have since found peace where pain once was.
may she rest in peace
