Gordon travels to Newbury Park in Southern California to Mexican restaurant Mama Ritas. Owner Laura ran an incredibly successful catering business for years before transferring her skills to running a restaurant, but she has failed to grasp that the two things are very different beasts.

Laura ended up going back to the same chef who microwaved food. Of course the restaurant quickly folded.
Loyalty will make you blind
She should have hired an actual head chef. She could have kept her friend , kept her in the kitchen , but under an experienced chef who could have lead them into the future. Thatbwould have prepared then for the future and helped her friend as well. Her friend wasn't a head chef, she was a catering cook, a head chef would have made them better and helped her friend learn how to to a head chef. It's not an insult , every chef is akways looking to learn, or should be, so it would be a valuable tool for everyone. Having one more on the payroll may hurt at furst, but it would have increased the value overall and been an investment that would have doubled the value ten fold.
She could of very easily made Pearla a server instead of a chef.But she chose the gun instead and that's what made her fail the restaraunt.
Sadly its closed few months after this episode was aired in 2010 the restaurant was closed

What I appreciate about Laura was that she actually listened to Chef Ramsay and never got argumentative with him. Why she stuck by that horrible microwave chef of hers is beyond me.
Maybe they were more than just friends.
I'm not judging because my sister is one herself, but I totally think they were lesbians in a relationship with each other. Definitely gave off that vibe and it's an easy explanation for that level of loyalty for somebody who is essentially tanking your business

It's simple really. Perla is not an employee for her, it's her dear friend. For a change the owner (Laura) actually seems to see all that and I agree with you. I just think she doesn't have the heart to fire Perla. Well, as other comments have said she did indeed not do such thing and the place caved in. I don't think Laura realized at that moment that she's actually being a bad friend by treating her as her child and not being honest with her. Oh well.

Unpopular opinion here, but the whole Perla/Laura friendship feels very one-sided to me. Laura is almost $2 million in debt and she still can’t cut ties with Perla, during and after this episode, while Perla only cares to have her easy job back. It’s a very toxic friendship, if you want to call it that.

Laura always seemed a bit creepy to me. Seriously curious why pearla means so much to her to keep her in a position that killed her buisness and debt. And that petting? It's a change of jobs not a criminal sentence.

It comes across like fraternization. It often kills in the military and bankrupts companies and small businesses. I'm sure it made the staff uncomfortable and created an inefficient work environment.

It's so frustrating to see Pearla standing there doing nothing and looking clueless. I like that Laura stepped in and took over.

Putting Perla on Catering is a mistake as well, She can't cook. That food is going to be terrible there as well. If you want to keep Perla around, she needs to start at the very beginning, Salads & maybe cold grinders, and not frozen meats.

Okay it's pretty crystal clear that they were in a relationship 🙄 The way she interacts with that one lady it's just crazy because she doesn't act like that towards the other employees That's exactly why you do not do business with family or friends No matter how close you are it always ends up in a disaster, Y'all end up being mad at each other for years so I don't think it's worth it
But there are family businesses that can work out (ex. Rao’s) it just depends on the people’s mindset and approach

Sadly it was closed. Most of the restaurants that were a part of kitchen nightmare closed bc what ever gordon taught them they forgot about it and continued doing what they were doing. I heard laura went back to her same way microwaving food and it got closed just few months after this episode was aired. Idk why they dont understand simple things and what a professional cook like gordon taught them 🤷♂️ 🤦🏼♂️

Laura [and/or her mother] should have taught Perla and properly trained her themselves, especially since it's their authentic family recipes 🙄
My Abuela properly taught me ALL her recipes and her and my Padre trained me, I do the same with my children and whoever else wants to know and learn.
I understand that she cares for Perla and she acts as if Perla is her daughter, I can get that. However, caring for someone is NOT enough to let them ruin your business.
Take Perla off of "Head Chef" and start her on Salads 🥗 and sauces, etc.. train her in Desserts and then teach her cooking from square one.
If you wanna keep Perla, then do it right and properly teach the girl right, because she absolutely CANNOT cook at all right now 🙄🤦🏼♀️💯

I watched kitchen nightmare once but now I became a nightmare 🌟🔥💯
I just moved to a new neighborhood in Brooklyn. There is delicious take-out place serving fantastic Jamaican food a few blocks away from the new apartment. Loved their shrimp curry. The second time I ate this curry, I got food poisoning. I’m tempted to give them a second chance just because the food is great and its nearby. But if their food was crappy like Mama Rita’s, I would never go back. Get sick to eat mediocre food? No thank you!

I thought he was being harsh, cause she admitted from the beginning that she didn't know what she was doing and she only knew catering. Then, the same day, he yells at her and doubts her commitment because she does things the only way she knows how. Thats unfair because you can't change things in a few minutes and without knowing what you were doing wrong.
There's definitely more to her obsession with Pearla. They're definitely In a relationship.
