@@MikeMDs because my coolant level is good, but still sometimes I have cold air waves even when the engine is at constant operating temps. And yes, the thermostat is good. I’m going to pick an 06 530i up and plan on doing this to it as soon as I pick it up. My only concern is the battery potentially dying. Would jumping it off if it did die be an option?
Is the serpentine belt supposed to spin when doing this process? Great video Can you post or suggest what type of battery source did you use I saw that you have it connected to the terminals but it does not say what type of battery source since I don’t wanna risk it just by using my own battery can you help
you can use a battery tender/charger from autozone. Let the battery charge to max before doing this procedure. See if there is one with a ps mode (power supply) and set it to that mode . That mode is used when the key is on in the vehicle.
I am original owner of 2006 325i with 112k miles and waterpump is still working. Should I replace it? I have new parts but too lazy since it is still cold out
Hi, I would replace it along with the plastic thermostat which is bolted to it. Especially if you think it is original and you drive long distances. Even if it is snowing out , if that pump stops then the engine will still overheat. If they have been replaced before then you are probably okay.
Hi Mike, I have a 2011 BMW X5 with the N55 Engine. I have a coolant leak and looks like the culprit is my coolant expansion tank. I'm replacing the expansion tank next week and after that I want to do a coolant bleed. My plan is to fill up the expansion tank up to the max mark and then do this procedure. My questions will be: - Should I keep the cap on or off? the car will be cold while doing this procedure. The expansion tank doesn't have the bleed screw. - I'll be going for a test drive and wait for the car to cool down. If the coolant level is lower after checking and more coolant is added, do you recommend to do the bleeding again? Thank you
Because the expansion tank is the highest point in the coolant system on that vehicle, one procedure should be fine. The cap doesn't matter if it is on or off while doing it. It may spray out a little while bleeding and make a mess. If so then put the cap on. Drive after with the heater on for ten min. Let cool down and recheck level.
@@MikeMDs Hi Mike, one more question. Today I replaced the expansion tank and cap, the lower hose connection was the hardest part. The cars has been sitting for over a week and I feel my battery is not the strongest because I haven't been driving the car a lot and before buying it I know it was not driven often. I bought the NOCO GENIUS5 which is a 6-volt and 12-volt battery charger that puts 5 amps of charge. I'll leave it overnight charging the battery. I want to do the bleeding procedure tomorrow and I assume the battery will be fully charge. I just want to double check if it is okay to have the charger connected to the car when I start the procedure and if this charger will help to keep the battery from dying?
Kinda dumb question...BUT I'm a recent owner of a 2006 330i e90. I'm not sure if the cooling system has had any repairs done to it. Can I just bleed the system anyways?, what is the main purpose for bleeding? Thanks
Hi sir thank you for your video is very good describe procedure I have a 2 question for you - Betwen 2 bleeding cycle if possible to not shut off key and just put the gaz pedal for restart the second cycle? - And for cleaning and descaling all water system what product is recommended for an E90 328xi 2011? Thank you have a nice day (Sorry for my english it's little hard for me)
Im not sure on your first question. I've never tried that. The second question. No cleaning checmicals are recommended as you will never get them out completely. Unless you have foreign liquid in the system like engine oil or stop leak. At that point it is recommended to use GAIN laundry detergent. As it is gentle and wont etch or absorb into the coolant components. you would need to flush the system many times though. You run the engine with it to get it warm in-between flushes.
Thanks for the help.. it's been really helpful.. the problem I'm now is.. that the bleeding mode never went off.. so now everytime I'm around the car doing something else. When the engine is off. I can hear that water pump activating itself. Can you help me please and tell me how to deactivate the bleeding mode??
The bleeding mode is supposed to shut down automatically after a few minutes. If it doesnt the pump is either faulty or the bus line that controls it is down ( it shares the bus line with the oil level sensor and alternator. If either of those components are faulty it will cause this issue) I've seen people drive around like this with no problem. But it does put stress on the pump. Eventually when the car is off the pump will stop when the vehicle enters sleep mode. ( kind of like your computer's screen saver )
@@MikeMDs thanks for replying so quick yeah mine is driving fine is just aggravating hearing that pump turn on itself and start the bleeding process with no reason. When I'm around doing something. Question Wich cars have an electric waterpump ? How can you tell ? I have an bmw e63 from 2005 a 630i but i dont see any coolant spraying ?? When i start it it flows Is it broken ? Or dont i have an electric pump ?
Do a google search for BMW OEM parts. Select a website and enter your BMW info searching for parts. Select the cooling category and see what it lists for a water pump. Good luck.
you probably don't have one. That year came with a different engine . If you see a fan that is attached to the engine by the radiator and only spins when the engine is running , then you have a mechanical water pump. Which in that case you would bleed the conventional way using the bleeder screw at the coolant tank. Once topped off, run the engine with the defroster and heater at full blast for 5 min. shut car off then recheck level add more if needed then go drove the vehicle with the heater on. After car cools down recheck level again.
@@MikeMDs thanks! I set it to 10A last night for 3 bleed cycles, and it pulled closer to 12-15A probably. Worked great with $60 hobo freight tool, if only i didnt Put the radiator to turbo air hose on loose 😂
2009 328i, water pumps but flow seems really low and it flows for maybe 10 seconds then stops, then a few seconds later repeats and keeps cycling like that. Did that for less than 10 minutes then stopped. Had charger connected the whole time. Is the flow supposed to be constant the whole 12-ish minutes? Does this sound like a failing pump?
Your engine has a mechanical main coolant pump. And a small electric pump for the turbocharger. This method will not work on your engine. You bleed it the old school way. Heater on while revving it at 3k rpms till you feel heat coming out of the vents. Make sure the coolant cap is on while doing this.
I have. 2017 and I did this and there was a puddle under the car. Had the pump changed about 8 months ago. Also a hose on the left side. Any suggestions?
Hi, You probably have a weak battery. The car will turn off the ignition on purpose. You can try and hook a battery charger to your car. Let it charge the battery first for about an hour then try it again leaving the battery charger attached.
@MikeMDs I changed my coolant reservoir in my 2008 BMW 328i due to me checking because I noticed the fan running alot more and in a high gear ( the cap was bad so I changed the reservoir also floaty broken). Anyways I disconnected the battery and reconnected at that time the ac and heater stopped blowing completely. I was still able to perform the bleeding process with the switch turned to heater position. It seemed to work the stream of water was visible and the movement inside the reservoir was happening also. Today I find out the voltage in my battery was so low they couldn't figure out why my car was even starting. Needless to say I have several lights on the dash no air or heat and fan still running constantly yet temperature still reads in the higher 80's . I'm overwhelmed!

Don't open the screw while it is electronically bleeding. The screw is for filling the coolant system before bleeding. You open the screw, add coolant, close the screw. Then bleed the system.
Yes your correct. We fill it more to prevent the customer from coming back a week later with a low coolant light. Sometimes the level drops after a coolant repair and bleeding due to small trapped air pockets.
No unfortunately that is just due to age and heat of the coolant passing through the hose. Fresh Coolant mix can extend the life of already good components as it has lubricating and corrosive resistance properties.
I did that but it just made a weird noise, like it’s trying to run but no antifreeze come out like on the video, it’s doesn’t drip into container but instead making a weird noise
There could be a trapped air bubble at the pump. You may try using the bleeder screw or crack open a line to bleed some air out while filling it with fluid

I followed the steps probably 3 times. I hear a clicking noise in the front but see no water flowing into the reservoir. Maybe if I drive around with the bleeder unscrewed a little it will manually bleed the air from the system
If the coolant has ate the plastic stick completely off. I would go from the bottom of the reservoir and unbolt and bleed the reservoir then take it and remove the stick and get all the plastic out asap. If not you would be digging with plyers and not get it all. The reservoir is 20$ u can also just buy a new one.

Do I need to start the engine and rev it to 3-4000 RPM, after following your procedure for bleeding the electronic pump, or is the bleeding process completed only by running the electric pump?
No you don't need to run the engine to bleed. You can drive it after the bleeding procedure with the heater on. Then recheck the level when the engine is cold again.
Works if battery good 👍 or jump with other car or another battery connect . Three ways. Yes you can bleed the car if you just start it with cap off. Thought I'd throw those things out there seeing I'll buy these cars any condition.
My f10 diesel doesent doing this when engine runs water comes out from the little whole but when i do self bleeding folowing the Manufacturer process it wont start

@@MikeMDs thank you I got it to work swapped a new water pump and it failed in 2 weeks luckly I keep the old one as it was still good on my swapped because I had a thermostat
yes, just be careful not to over tighten, It is brittle. Sometimes water will not drizzle out. that is okay, It is just to get most of the air out of the line. The pump is smart and can detect if it is not spinning in coolant, so it will not bleed correctly to prevent the pump from burning out.
Mike MDs okay so put in a funnel and fill until it starts coming out the bleeder hole? Because I put a good amount but not overkill where the bobber floats to the top and still says coolants low. Do you think I might’ve stripped the sensor when I replaced the expansion tank? ( I wasn’t very rough with it)
Hi there, your battery state of charge is probably too low . The car is smart and will shit everything off to save the battery. You will need to attach a charger while you bleed it.

Yes, you can open it to monitor the progress and add coolant if needed.
@@MikeMDs because my coolant level is good, but still sometimes I have cold air waves even when the engine is at constant operating temps. And yes, the thermostat is good. So I would perhaps consider bleeding using this procedure and open the screw from time to time, or simply open it until there aren’t any bubbles coming out.
I’m going to pick an 06 530i up and plan on doing this to it as soon as I pick it up. My only concern is the battery potentially dying. Would jumping it off if it did die be an option?
Is the serpentine belt supposed to spin when doing this process? Just don’t get how the water pump even works if the belts connected to it but the cars not started I’m having trouble bleeding the cooling system on my 2006 BMW X3 I’m thinking i need a new water pump if you could let me know i would really appreciate it thx
Hi, that year has the older engine which has a mechanical water pump. So this method will not work. You will have to bleed it traditional method
Great video, super helpful! Thank you!
Thanks for a great video, when connecting the power source, do you have to disconnect your positive lead on your battery?
No, the power source is only so the pump activation wont drain your battery.
Great video sunshine cheers
Aren't you suppose to close the cap while your bleeding it?
Engine is cold, just water pump is working. So no need to cap off tightly.
That mode is used when the key is on in the vehicle.
thank you so much, again thanks for the video
My questions will be:
- Should I keep the cap on or off? the car will be cold while doing this procedure.
@@MikeMDs Awesome Mike, thank you for your help. Stay safe and healthy
You can perform with a charger attached. But NOT a jumper . It will votage spike the system.
Do you bleed the system after adding coolant or before adding new coolant ?
after adding coolant. Only needed if the system was open for a repair.
Kinda dumb question...BUT I'm a recent owner of a 2006 330i e90. I'm not sure if the cooling system has had any repairs done to it. Can I just bleed the system anyways?, what is the main purpose for bleeding? Thanks
Best video for this
Tried this procedure 4 times ,can't hear pump running due to electric cooling fan running wide open on my 10 335i xdrive..
Super helpful video! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Hi sir thank you for your video is very good describe procedure
I have a 2 question for you
- Betwen 2 bleeding cycle if possible to not shut off key and just put the gaz pedal for restart the second cycle?
- And for cleaning and descaling all water system what product is recommended for an E90 328xi 2011?
Thank you have a nice day
(Sorry for my english it's little hard for me)
Im not sure on your first question.
@@MikeMDs Thank you have a nice day
Great resource, thanks
Glad it was helpful!
I just does it once though. Everytime I use the car and come back home and turn it off. like 2 mins After i turn the car off.. i can hear that pump going on bleeding mode.

Hi I’m having problems starting the bleed process. The current outside temperature is 30 degrees Celsius and the maximum the heater will go to is 28 degrees. How do you get this to work in these conditions?
That shouldn't matter. You may have another issue.
Thank you for the tutorial, super helpful. What did you mean about the key from 3:04? How is this done?
Meaning after your are done with the bleeding procedure. Turn off the key for 10 seconds before starting the vehicle.
can someone help me
my e92 water pump was broke car was overheating. mechanic put a new pump and thermostat i drove car. now still my car is overheating air is coming from coolant cabin. and fan is running at full speed. any suggestions
There's a bleeder screw on the side of oil filter. (On n46 e90) simply open unscrew plug while filling the coolant reservoir.. once the coolant comes out..(pushing air out ) close the bleeder screw and check coolant level in the reservoir...n
Do you have to perform the bleed steps if you are only adding/toping off coolant? Thanks
No . Only if you are doing a repair and have lost a lot of coolant.

Also changed the sensor and the light still comes on
If you check the level and it is good. Then it is a bad coolant tank. The float inside is waterlogged and not floating properly .
Hi mike so I replaced water pump thermostat hose flange on my 2010 bmw 328i the bleeding process went threw but it kept going for like 20 minutes then I stopped it and retried it and it’ll start doing it then just stop no more bubbles come out of reservoir straight anti freeze
I also changed Raidiator
Yes some just keep on going forever. So as long as there are no bubbles you are golden.
You are awesome thank you for this 🙏🏽
After it bleeds for a few seconds it stops, what do i do to make it bleed longer?
I have a F30 2014 and my battery is just 4 month old
Can i do bleeding without charger?
I think it's ok for sure
you should be fine.

Question
Wich cars have an electric waterpump ? How can you tell ?
I have an bmw e63 from 2005 a 630i but i dont see any coolant spraying ??
When i start it it flows
Is it broken ?
What amp setting do you use for battery charger/maintainer? Curious if I should use the trickle or charge mode.
My charger is automatic. But definitely not on trickle. This thing draws some amps.
It is normal for it to vary in speed and shut on and off while performing the bleeding procedure.
After bleeding do you tighten the screw back?
Yes, tighten it before running the vehicle.
My manual 2012 135i will start the process then after a min or so the car will turn itself off and the process will stop. Ideas?
Leave the door open and the angels lights on so the car won’t go to sleep
What’s the proper engine temperature for a 2006 BMW 325i
I started the bleeding by pressing that gas paddle for 10 seconds but the bleeding procedure won't stop even after 40 minutes
Some do that . Shutting off the key after 10 min should be enough time
My BMW F20 has also electrical pump, but this does not work on my car.
I press the gas pedal longer than 15 seconds. But i dont hear the pump working.
Your engine has a mechanical main coolant pump. And a small electric pump for the turbocharger. This method will not work on your engine. You bleed it the old school way. Heater on while revving it at 3k rpms till you feel heat coming out of the vents. Make sure the coolant cap is on while doing this.
Hello. Battery jumper should be 5v or 12v ? Thanks
Any idea as to why the bleed procedure will not complete? I've let mine run about 30 minutes and it doesn't finish.
Some models will keep going. after 10 min you can stop it as that is plenty of time.
@@MikeMDs thank you!
I have. 2017 and I did this and there was a puddle under the car. Had the pump changed about 8 months ago. Also a hose on the left side. Any suggestions?
It's hard to know what is leaking without seeing is. my guess is a loose hose clamp at the pump or thermostat.
Thanks Mike!
You bet!
Would this be the same procedure on a 2014 x5 s35i 3.0L ??????
Yes it is the same.
Hello ignition position won’t stay on long enough for bleeding, can you tell me why
Hi,
You probably have a weak battery. The car will turn off the ignition on purpose. You can try and hook a battery charger to your car. Let it charge the battery first for about an hour then try it again leaving the battery charger attached.
What if my heater doesnt work well basically that whole control unit doesnt work would the electric pump still turn on?
Yes, the pump should still work. If it didn't work the engine would overheat quickly.
@@MikeMDs so you dont need to turn up the the heater in order to bleed the system? Just kinda confused on how that works
Oh I see what you mean. I'm not sure actually. I've never came across that scenario. You can try .

I did this and I put the cap on and unscrew the bleeder and a lot of coolant came out when the system was being bled why ?
Don't open the screw while it is electronically bleeding. The screw is for filling the coolant system before bleeding. You open the screw, add coolant, close the screw. Then bleed the system.
The coolant stick should be same level as the cap not over it.
Yes your correct. We fill it more to prevent the customer from coming back a week later with a low coolant light. Sometimes the level drops after a coolant repair and bleeding due to small trapped air pockets.
@@MikeMDs got it. Quick question, does bleeding coolant system prevents it from getting cracks on the plastic parts?
No unfortunately that is just due to age and heat of the coolant passing through the hose. Fresh Coolant mix can extend the life of already good components as it has lubricating and corrosive resistance properties.
Very helpful and clear. Thanks

Need some help bleeding procedure wont stop after 20 mins?
Cycling the key usually shuts it down.
Is water pump replacement easy to do?
The electric waterpump is in a tight spot on the right side of the engine. Without a hoist I'd say no it is not easy.
I followed the steps probably 3 times. I hear a clicking noise in the front but see no water flowing into the reservoir. Maybe if I drive around with the bleeder unscrewed a little it will manually bleed the air from the system
oh, mine is an 07 E87 120i
How can i open the whole caver. There is that stick to measure the level stucked inside and i need to get it out
If the coolant has ate the plastic stick completely off. I would go from the bottom of the reservoir and unbolt and bleed the reservoir then take it and remove the stick and get all the plastic out asap. If not you would be digging with plyers and not get it all. The reservoir is 20$ u can also just buy a new one.
What if the water isn’t moving around? I hear the pump but it’s no movement inside the coolant
you may have an air bubble. Try it a few times.

Hey Mike MD, great video. The warning light for low cooling fluid level just came up in my 2008 530IA N53, so I'm about to top-up and bleed.

Mike MDs I have an n54 535i and the bleeder screw is on the opposite side facing the firewall. Would I still fill until comes out?
yes, just be careful not to over tighten, It is brittle.
