That means a remote ID system is now required by the FAA for those USA drone pilots that wish to fly a drone that weighs more than 250 grams. This video discusses those requirements with a focus on requirements for recreational pilots (i.e. most of my audience).

I'm not a drone pilot but fly regular fixed wing aircraft. Will this module work for me as my aircraft don't have GPS units?

There were some things missing in those instructions, such as the different installation locations for each HS drone model.

I tested this same module out today on an Autel EVO II Dual 640T. The module is universal (for any drone without built-in RID) and does NOT connect to the drone. It broadcasts GPS position, speed, heading, etc. Worked great. I climbed to 300' and about 500' away and still got a strong signal. (I used the "Air Sentinel" app installed on my Samsung Galaxy Android phone (free download from Play Store.) Glad to see Holy Stone making a RID module available for half the price of some others. I'm not so concerned about performance (transmission distance) since it's up to the FAA to receive the information. Thanks for the review!
That is good to hear because it is aproved on the FAA DOC website and was wondering about attaching to my gen 1 Mavic pro.

There are a couple of things I think you are incorrect about.
These modules do not transmit any information to the FAA, they simply transmit in a limited range around the drone incase someone sees it flying and happens to have the app on their phone and they want to know where it is flying from and to whom it belongs.
As far as sub250 gram drones are concerned. You can fly them anywhere. You’re not required to register them or fly them in an approved area.
Thanks for the set up video. In the Operator ID field I was initially confused about whether to enter my drone's FAA registration number or my FAA Stakeholder ID and you clarified it during the software setup -- drone registration number. Have you encountered any issues with the module coming loose from the velcro or concerns with its attachment during flight?
Bought 3 of these last week. They are currently installed and operating - in an office tower elevator, the undercarriage of a garbage truck, and taped under the airline seat that was in front of me. Remote ID is a resounding success!

The description is big on using it with Holystone drones with a brief mention of using it with other drones. I'd need to know it will work with my other drones and how will I know where to place it to not interfere with gps? Can it go on the underside of a drone for this?

In the EU if you have a sub 250gr copter you dont need remote ID ... BUT.. if your copter has a camera you do need remote ID.
I have a Potensic Atom ... 244gr drone.. the smallest remote ID i can find is 16gr...
That means if i add the remote ID .. the drone weights more then 250gr...
Means for that same drone i also have to get my C1-C3 certificat.. and that cost 99 euro in the EU.

Research what bicycle racers did in the 70s and 80s to reduce weight. The material is called drillium. Anything can be drillium, you just need to drill a bunch of small holes in it.
So how are people on the ground going to see if it is a 249 gram drone or a 251 gram weapon of mass destruction?
Hi, the Holy Stone Drone Go2 app has be updated that allows doing a firmware update to the Holy Stone RID modules. After doing that firmware update, all my phones and tablet "Karen" apps now let me see RID information being transmitted. Doing the firmware update was very straight forward. Start the module and then push the power button before the module goes into the RID transmitting mode. Select the module using the updated Drone Go2 app and the screen will inform you that a firmware update is available. The firmware update takes less than a minute. It is nice to know that there is a firmware update capability built into the Holy Stone RID module so that any other RID transmission issues can be resolved.

But my own personal feeling is that the FAA's infrastructure itself may not be ready to receive, process, and disseminate this information to its traffic control system (not sure that they anticipated the cost and magnitude of what this would entail?).
Another my own personal feeling IMHO, if you get caught doing dangerous things with your >250gm drone (like long distance flying out of line of sight), the FAA can and may decide to enforce this rule for your particular case.
The FAA was asked by Congress in 2016 to implement Remote ID. If you think for one minute these costs went "undiscovered" until now, you are truly mistaken. The holdup has to do with the FRIA's not being authorized and the lack of supply chain RID modules for existing drones over 250 grams. What the FAA, I believe, didn't anticipate was that many of the FRIA's were in ecologically sensitive areas which requires a Programmatic Environmental Assessment (PEA). No approved FRIA's until that assessment is complete so the FAA is giving a pass on RID until March when, hopefully more FRIA's are approved.
You're trust in Government efficiency and foresight regarding implementation of this system is much greater than mine ;-). Especially using that foresight to accurately predict, acquire, and assign those dollars to their budget. Then using those dollars to update their infrastructure in sufficient time (September 16th deadline) to receive and disseminate accurate drone info to the air traffic control system. Then training air traffic controllers to properly utilize that information. Again Kevin, I have my doubts that the FAA was really ready on September 16th. I know what they said regarding FRIA's and chip availability. But I have very strong doubts that those are the only reasons. @@Kevin-ib4gv
I don't know anything about what I don't know. I do know that they had 7 years to put this together, had to appropriate funding from Congress, and it's really not that complicated to where they were "surprised" and need just a few more months to complete. So now DJI has come out with a sub 250g fully functioning quadcopter. What now? Is the FAA going to come down on that one as well? Will the FAA be going around with scales to weigh every drone they see in the air? The feds have tried this sort of thing before and it's never worked. In the beginning you needed an FCC license to use CB radios but that went out the window pretty quickly and this will as well.

However, Drone Scanner on iphone 14 plus does NOT pick up the signal (no drones found). Any idea why??
Because it is an Iphone, and Apple has restricted IOS to not be able to scan for WiFi broadcasts. It is a feature. It will be able to see Bluetooth RID but not WiFi RID.
To reprogram it a 2nd time, turn the module on, then press & hold the power button with 2 seconds to get recognized by the app again.

This RID Module does not connect with your drone! All the data such as location, height, etc, is provided by internal electronics. It does not communicate with the drone or your remote controller!

Remote ID has been officially canceled and moved to 2024 due to chips been on back order so it’s been pushed for next year and because of the shortage
It hasn't been canceled, the effective date for compliance was just moved forward.
Hi, thank you for your review. With the Holy Stone RID module one can select "Other" to input information for drones and airplanes other than Holy Stone drones. An issue I have is that other than the module blinking lights I can't see the module broadcasting with drone scanning apps. Do you know of a drone scanning app that will show that the Holy Stone RID module is indeed broadcasting RID information?
Thanks. I've cut the part out of the video saying that it was specific for HS drones (might take a couple hours for RUclips to update it).
Regarding the transmission, I don't know what frequency this broadcasts on. Maybe plane transponder frequencies?
I'm sure you know but RID enforcement was pushed back until March 2024. Holy Stone told me they were sending me this module so I need to message my contact.
Whats the point on a holy stone ? All the ID would pick up is toilet bowling and crashing !

This is an HS720R. It already comes with a built-in remote ID. An RID module isn't necessary.
Many of the newer Holy Stone drones now come with RID already built-in. This video was produced before they came out. But this removable RID module can be used on other drones besides Holy Stone's
You can fly in g and e air space with no problems.

No. You just need the phone one time to program the RID module for your specific drone. After that the module remembers the settings. Then you simply turn the module on and off when you want to go fly, no phone needed.
Who can see this module inflight? Such as ATC, aircraft outfitted with TCAS, etc

@@buddyadkins2432 BUT, both of the RID's you mention are NOT self contained and need to be hooked up to a power supply. The Holystone unit is totally self contained and all you have to do is use the included velcro to attach/detach it.

Nope, anybody can see the information being transmitted from this using free apps already available on Play and the App store. I just tried it with "OpenDroneID OSM" app, and was VERY uncomfortable with the type and amount of information being transmitted in public.

The FAA might need to rethink this to find a way to limit the transmitted info being available to law enforcement officials only. The way it is now, they will likely face extreme resistance from pilots complying in using it.
Brought it all by yourselves. As high and far as you can because the box your toy came in said so & you are over 14 yrs old. Well then , YOU fnk comply , YOU pay for your Flying irresponsabilities , dont expect other Life Long responsible Flyers to do same.
Hi, I can now detect that both of my Holy Stone RID modules are transmitting RID data. This morning as a last resort, I added Drone Scanner, Air Sentinel and OpenDroneID app to my Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 tablet. I have no idea why I was not able to detect transmission with my Samsung Galaxy Note 8, Apple iPhone SE, or UAS Sentry device.
Holy Stone told me that they use Bluetooth 5.0. Both the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and Apple iPhone SE use Bluetooth 5.0, but didn't detect RID transmission.
I am disappointed that the UAS Sentry device didn't detect the Holy Stone module RID transmission.
You mentioned that the Remote ID module will transmit the information to the FAA, however, you might want to check that since these broadcast modules have a short range transmission and don't connect to any type of network (at least not yet).
That's what I've been thinking. I really doubt that the FAA has a RID network setup to receive, interpret, and disseminate the information from these modules. It's more believable a reason for them delaying the rollout of the network to March 2024, than their current reason (not enough FRIAs). And I also have doubts that they'll be ready by March 2024 either.
@@Quadcopter101 From all of my research, the deal is not related to network ID since that was removed from the final rule due to the responses from the comments. At this point there is NO rule and NO intention to have a network where the FAA scans and collects RID information. The broadcast modules have an effective range that is less than 1K (3000 ft) and a purported maximum range of about 2K on a clear day
and direct line of sight. Now, you tell me how that signal is going anywhere. In fact, a RID receiver needs to be pretty close to the quad to be able to pick up the signal.
@@Quadcopter101 The 2024 date is an enforcement date, the actual regulation is now if full effect. It has nothing to do with the FAA being ready, but rather a sort of "give me" to the community for the manufacturers not getting more modules out. That said, module production is a business thing. If everyone who needs a module would order one, then there would be plenty of real demand and operational capital to ramp up production.
I believe that the signal is in case a drone comes to close to and airport that it would show up on a radar and let the tower know what’s going on?
@@chodkowski01 Actually, picking a quad up on radar has nothing to do with RID. A radar system might pick up the quad as an object, but it does not pick up Bluetooth or WiFi that the RID transmits. The tower would need a "Phone" or other device specifically to pick up the RID signal...when it gets close enough and then has clear RF LOS.
RID is so that ANYONE close enough to the quad (who finds the quad disturbing) can snag the information which could be given to authorities to track down. Very few folks are actually going to try to locate the pilot. However, there is a lot more to it than this. Congress mandated it as part of a bigger initiative. This is just the first step. While network remote ID is currently not in the regulations, consider that it is coming in one form or another.
Mine would not connect Bluetooth to any phone or my tablet useless had to send it back
I know that five of the six drones in your “map” have built in remote ID. At least according to Holy Stone.

I have multiple drones that are not RID compliant. Being that this device requires you to put in a model of your drone, can I assume that we are required to have a different device of each non RID compliant drone?
No, just reprogram it with the app when switching drones.

No, $5 total registration fee . There's no charge for registering the RID module. And yes you can use it on multiple drones. Use the app to modify aircraft model, and weight.

It will not connect via Bluetooth.
Don't try to connect to the Bluetooth directly through the phone settings. You need to connect to Bluetooth through the app. Advance the above video to 5 minutes to see how. Or click below.

If using a different drone other than Holy Stone, manually type in the drone's name and information in the menu.

This device is causing massive receiver interference.
Be careful when selecting an installation location. You don't want to install this near any of your drone's antennas. Especially be careful to not install this over or near your drone's GPS antenna. You'll notice problems gaining satellite reception if you accidentally did do such.

Question? If I'm sharing this single RID among six different non-Holy Stone drones, on the RID app will I have to re-enter specific drone info each time I go to fly or can I list all six drones and details initially one time on the app and simply click on the listed drone I intend to fly?
Just tried it. Unfortunately it appears that you need to delete the old drone and enter the new drone's info when you switch between drones. However, keep in mind the info being entered is the RID's serial number, your FAA pilot registration number, the drone model, the drone's weight, and drone's class. The only one's that would change when you switch would be the last three. The drone's class would likely be unchanged as "C-1", as C-1 covers drone's weighing between 250 to 900m grams. Thus drone model and weight are the only ones needed changed. Those two aren't very important info to the FAA (as compared to the others), so you might get away with simply swapping without updating the app. I also mention in the video that the module might draw location data from the drone. I'm starting to suspect that the module has its own GPS built-in, thus no need to connect with the drone.@@dhoffman6435
As of the past few weeks, RID has been delayed for at least months as they reconsider things...Yeah!
The FAA is not reconsidering anything. They expect you to be in compliance NOW. All the did was delay ENFORCEMENT for six months. Of course, no law enforcement agency anywhere wants anything to do with this, unless a pilot is presenting a clear danger to people or property.

We can thank the unrestrained, careless, brainless people who flew anywhere whenever and as dangerous as they dared without considering safety other equipment like airliners, sensitive areas & safety of animals & people alike. These types have ruined my hobby & created these issues that effected every other hobbyist. I predicted this 20+ years ago we would eventually get into this situation. We can also thank the influx of a massive market increase of different types of flyers being sold at non hobby shops that reduced the introduction into flyer clubs & the shared knowledge of experienced model flyers. I can't even fly where I live in Canada so I eventually had to rid myself of my collection. We will never be able to get back to better times, also of note I predicted the use of area restricted geo fencing pre 2010ish, expect eventually that some models depending on their avionics loadout will be disabled around certain locations. RIP to my mini hanger.
No, those doofuses (doofi?) had no sway in the FAA decision to implement this ridiculous regulation. It’s strictly about clearing the below 400ft AGL airspace of recreational RC aircraft for commercial delivery drones. That’s what it’s about. That’s what it’s always been about.
That actually makes a lot of sense I hadn't thought about that aspect as well. I'm living by an airport & can't even fly in my backyard or a field here in Canada, totally messed up. I gave away a few thousand dollars of gear because I can't move in my situation. Saddest day of my rc life, crashing had nothing on those feels.
Holy Stone comes through for their customers. Autel told me they would have a module for me when the time came. They failed to deliver.
The props may hit that module when it comes loose. And GPS may get messed up. Not exactly safer is it?

If your drone has a flat surface Velcro may work for a while. But some drones are all round. Why cant you put straps through?
Here is a situation that could potentially happen. Your lose your drone. Someone finds it. He or she then puts your module on their drone and help prisoners escape. Then you go to jail.
Nobody has ever died or get seriously injured by a hobby drone. Zero. But with Remote ID that may change. And it won't stop 'terrorists'.
Remote ID should be for really large commercial drones that need to communicate with each other. For small video drones it only creates more problems. I highly doubt a judge will give the FAA right if it ever goes to court.
If the government wants to make things safer, then put a module on guns.
Does it also transmit drone operator's location?
No, just the drone's location, altitude, speed, heading, drone class, and pilot's registration number.
