    First of all thanks for posting, just an added note to the next video, the i bolt should be a solid i bolt, or you need to weld it. When I tightened up the centre bolt on the puller, it opened up the i bolt. I used a 3/8” bolt, so it was a good size but it couldn’t take the pressure. I did get the rims off quite fast. So thanks for the i bolt idea. Before I saw your video and I did watch others as well, I was going to make a custom puller.

    The best tip. The Cub Cadet shaft drive hydrostatic series 2000 tractors used a axle hub adapter for the double D keyway axles. So do some of the MTD SLT class tractors. They used a 4 bolt pattern 8 and 12 inch rim that was interchangeable. If you want to save the headache. Buy the adapters and the rims. Then tire changes and putting chains on with be a breeze.

    Do you have to have a puller? or, is it something like smacking disc brakes off a hub? can I smack the back side of the rim? Thanks

      Don't be smacking stuff. If you have the tools, it is an easy job to make a puller. If you don't have the tools to make one, pullers are not expensive.

    Did you grease the wheel shaft. Drill a punch hole on a longer bolt, will keep extractor in place. Store modified bolt and extractor together

    GREAT idea IF you have holes in the rim, ONE SUGGESTION when trying this, IF you have a very stubborn one you very well may begin to open/spread out the Eye bolt, so get eyebolts that are solid OR have the gap welded before using.

    • @petertyrrell6690
      @petertyrrell6690 5 лет назад +3

      You could drill holes if none are present. You don't have to use eye bolts just something that will work in your application. If I had to drill holes, I'd drill them closer to the hub.

    Eye bolts brilliant, I was in the hardware store this morning. Wish I had seen your video sooner. I took the tire off one side this afternoon. The only marking I can see is 45N321? Its a 80's MTD. What size rear tire is yours? Thanks,

      +Mr2fast4uall - Get a Torch and heat around it... DO NOT heat the Axle. Once it's HOT, use Cold Water and splash it really quick. Now try it again.... If that doesn't work, do it again, sometimes 2-3X will do it!!! By using Hot / cold method, you are expanding / contracting the " rust "! *NOTE:* *Remove ALL the Air Out of your Tire when doing this method!*

    I appreciate your posting this, but I'm afraid this didn't work for me. The more I tightened the gear puller the more the eye bolts distorted and finally broke. 3 days of soaking with wd40 and I'm off to find another option.

    Thanks MTD for designing the most ridiculous wheel mounting design of all riding lawn mowers. This is one of the many reasons I HATE MTD. Yea, that wheel came right off. But there will be some that will require a torts and destroying the rim to remove. Try getting a rim off a 20 year old MTD that was parked outside all its life.

    • @Nickadoo500
      @Nickadoo500 7 лет назад

      I can agree, these wheels are a devil to get off. IMO, I think MTD mowers are cheap. They have too much engineering in them and things like Vari-drive system pulleys, and 3-speed rear ends for F-N-R. They have too much plastic and the frames are weaker than some other mowers. But, i have one of my own made in 1998 and it can go pretty fast. I've learned to work around the design flaws of it and make do. It was given to me for free so i shouldnt complain, and it has high-power Briggs 16.5hp intek motor so thats good. Now I also have a 2002 Craftsman LT1000. It's built much stronger, it is simpler, and it has more metal than my MTD. It hasn't given me any lip for 15 years now. Only major maintenance it's had is oil changes and maybe 2 belt replacements.

      penetrating oil goes a long way, or just soak it in vinegar for a day, it will pop right off.

    Works good. Let's see that on a rusted on wheel though. I sprayed PB Blaster, heated the wheel hub, sawed through the hub, then bought a bearing seperator kit with a stout puller and finally got the wheel off. When you buy a mower, new or used, pull the wheels and use Never Size on the axle.

    Hi,this looked extremely too easy.I have a 18.5 46inch cut mtd with rims likes yours.Will not budge after heating and pbblaster.Last option was to take transaxle off and work on the rim that way.When you are were pulling your rim,it looked like you had no resistance at all with the puller.I could tell that by how easy you were turning the socket..Im going to try this tomorrow but my rims is really rusted.

    • @tammygosnell
      @tammygosnell 9 лет назад +1

      +tammygosnell I tried this today,It didn't not work wouldn't even budge it.It actually messed up the threads in my shaft because of the force on the puller.I retapped it going to remove the transaxle and use heat and pblaster and let gravity do it job.Be aware of using a puller near the shaft threads.Im not saying this will not work for you.My rim is stuck to the shaft.

    Buy yourself a "Steering Wheel Puller set" from Harbor freight or wherever and then you can use regular Hex-Head bolts to screw into the wheel and pull it off.

    all rust is not created equal just like people. You got the pee wee herman rust and you have the arnold swatznegger rust. The people taking time to make these videos can't know what rust you have. I have been spraying on a freebee mower for several days and I can see a steady stream of rust particles leaving the keyway hole. If it takes a month so be it

      Tips: Get a Torch and heat around it... DO NOT heat the Axle. Once it's HOT, use Cold Water and splash it really quick. Now try it again.... If that doesn't work, do it again, sometimes 2-3X will do it!!!
