I changed both tires myself the last time I put two new tires on the front of my riding mower. It took me several hours to get both old tires off the rim, then used a big flat head screwdriver along with a spoon wrench to seal them back on the new rim. I will tell you this, next time I change the tires on that rider I will just pop the old ones off and take them to my mechanic who said he would mount the new tires for 20 dollars. Saves me about two hours of work and is well worth it!
I'm an ex-Class A mechanic and I've learned a few tricks.... not a good idea to heat the dust caps, they are only thin material and could warp. Instead either spray the sealing point with WD40 and let soak, or cover the cap with a rag, then sharply but gently tap around the edge of the cap with a small hammer or the edge of pliers to 'shock' the dirt loose, then take a medium to large channel lock pliers with a rag in the jaws, grab the cap firmly in the jaws (but don't squeeze) and twist it back and forth to loosen it, then pull towards yourself after it turns freely. For the clip, some are e-clips that can be eased off with a small flat screwdriver and some may need snap-ring pliers. To break the tire beads, don't pound your hands black and blue, just step on the edges of the tire, your weight will do the trick. Mechanics learn to save wear and tear on their bodies as well as how to work quickly.
Used your tip to replace the dust cap, but in reverse - sprayed some lube on the inside of the cap, let it soak with a gentle rotation for about 30s and then with applied pressure, a pick, and a little persistence, the sucker slipped right on! Thanks!
For an ex class a mechanic you are definitely not the brightest turd on the pile 🤣😂🤣👍🤟👌. You do not have to take the rim off the lawn mower to change the tire. I'm an ex class a do it yourselfer and I changed and tubed many tires without removing the rim. Even rear tractor tires.
Thanks! I like the positive energy and the silliness. And I’m gonna try to fix my tire now with the knowledge that I gained from your video. Keep up the good work!
Few suggestions 1.) Dust covers - Use pentraing oil and a rag with some large channel locks to GENTLY twist the cap back and forth to lossen it off, just don't squeeze hard or you will crush/bend it requiring its replacement. 2.) Snap rings - Rather than flat head screwdrivers, try pointy needle nose pliers tips or small punches or jewelry screwdrivers. 3.) Prying - When prying off tire beads, just step on them with a heavy boot to dislodge the bead and use a cresent wrench handle to pry off, as it's smooth. Screwdrivers can damage the bead intergrity causing leaks on your new tire and are wider as well, a pair works great and you can use a rubber mallet to help driver them around the rim if necessary
It is MUCH easier to mount the new tire with some dish soap on the bead of the tire and on the :shoulder" of the rim. Soap on the bead helps it slid onto the rim much easier and on the shoulder of the rim to help the bead slide into place.
Most online videos that make this job look easy, like this video, are dealing with 2 ply tires. 4 ply tires are a completely different beast... you'll need real tire irons and a lot more umph to get 4 ply tires off and on.
Had same issue this past week. Quickest way with least hassle was taking it to a tire store down the street along wit new tire. Presto changeo, done in .5 hr. And there are tire spoons for the DIYer vs screw drivers, if you are so declined!
Changed so many over the years but your title caught my attention & then I had to watch. My little guys use to love riding with me as well. Stay safe, Joe Z
Thanks! I watched your video and it was easy peazy. I made a few adjustments but nothing major to speak of. You did a great job for a Do-it-yourselfer with improvised tools! 👍
I just changed an old, cracked tire on my dad's riding lawn mower. I used Dawn dish soap and water to seal the bead. And added air to seal the bead. Less hard work for my Portable Ryobi tire inflator to add air with the Valve stem core in. Now i'm going to see if it will still hold air. One thing i like about the front tires on the riding lawn mower is easy to reseal the bead.
A little dishwashing soap about 50% with water, just a small brush really helps with demounting and remounting tire. On the dust cap I used a small butane torch to heat the cap a little, just don't get the flame to close. A cig lighter would work also.
Moved from Los Angeles to TN where I now have 1.5 acres and old owners included a Husqvarna yth2246 mower. The backyard is quite sloped and the 2 times ive mowed since being here in some spots with alot of tree cover the ground stays damp well after a rain and my turf saver tires have gotten me stuck in a rut a few times. I imagine I look funny rocking my big butt side to side and bouncing on the seat so i got some more aggressive tractor tread kinda tires that came in today to install on my bad boy.. Been looking at some how to videos on how to do it without a machine, Ive done vehicle tires years ago in auto shop with a machine and ive done my son's bicycle tire but not a ridiing mower tire. I know its the same concept but wanted to see if its worth doing or if a tire shop can throw em on for a $20. Long story short, I tend to ramble on when I have a few adult beverages in me while roaming youtube videos.. i gave you a like for that smooth intro 👍
I appreciate you taking the time to comment on my video, thank you so much! If a tire shop is willing to do that, and if its more convenient for you I would definitely go that route. If not, its possible using a scissor jack and something heavy. A buddy of mine sent me a picture where a guy positioned a tire he was trying to fit on a rim under a hitch of a trailer/camper. He sat the scissor jack on the tire and cranked it up and as it lifted against the hitch the jack pushed against the tire and sat it passed the rim. I would recommend being careful, but there's definitely a possibility that may be able to help you do it super easy. Take care bud!
Thanks. A few of your tips helped me through this on my rear tires. I just threw some tubes in my tires. The tires were dry rotted, but no amount of slime could seal them, but they had a lot of tread still. I did the same process except I left the inside bead on. When the tubes give up the ghost, I will throw some new tires on. Thank you.
I just use a cutting wheel on the grinder and cut the old tires off😂 dawn dish washing soap is a good lubricant for the tire going back on done and done ✅
Some useful tips.. - Use soapy dishwashing water for removing and installing the tire to the rim. WD-40 at the very least. - Screwdrivers are too sharp and will cut up the rubber. Harbor Freight sells smooth edge tire spoons for working the bead to the rim.. again soapy water. You can also search common sites for tire spoons for motorcycles $10-$20. - Clean off the old grease on the axle and add some fresh axle grease. 👍
Thanks for putting this together! Definitely made the job easier. One thing I found worked really well with the dust cap, was using a hair dryer to heat it up, both during removal and reinstallation. It goes right on and off with a gloved hand. Thanks!
This video sure helped some folks get their tire off, however I have a John Deere 430 lawn tractor that I run AG tires on which are farm use tires so it makes it extremely difficult to get them tires off because of how durable they are.
So, Zack, I just want you to read my mind and make how-to videos for anything I ever need to do. This was so good. KISS and not so over-technical. Thanks!
I took mine off then took it and the new tire to the local tire shop and it will magically appear on the rim on thursday. I accidentally bought 6pl instead of 2pl so i wont go near it myself. But your guide helped me see how to remove the tires so.. Ty sir!
Thanks much for the video & tips. Much appreciated. Did people already comment on your passenger? Operator's Manual tells you to never have a passenger on any riding mower. That 1 time in a million when Murphy's law strikes the passenger can fall and be injured or killed either from falling and/or be injured or killed being run over by the tractor. Even just a disfigurement or crippling or dismembering injury would be life changing for the whole family. Every year one or more farmers operating a tractor are stricken with this either riding as a passenger or just by being the equipment operator. Always better safe than sorry.
I have found for that retaining clip a larger size set of needle nose pliers fits into the voids of the clip and outward pressure did the job for me. I imagine a large set of slip joint (channel lock) pliers would do the job reinstalling em, at least I hope. I sweat like a pig (i may have hyperhydrosis) so seeing your shirt drenched I dont feel so alone now.. getting tools ready for the job i am doin i am already getting hot and moist. When I used to play basketball at the gym people didnt want to guard me because my shirts were literally soaked like i dunked em in water..
Someone else had a good idea that works well for breaking the seal on the rims. Set your ladder foot onto the edge of the tire near the rim and stand on the ladder with some force on that side.
Checked the comments so I could check out any more tips I can get too as I’m a small female. Can’t believe some of the rude comments. I for one appreciate the help. I will also try adding a few things from the more productive comments. Thanks 😊
I place my tire and rim under the hitch on my truck. I set a small bottle jack on the bead and pump it up. The base of the bottle jack breaks the bead.
One way to avoid the rubber on the dust cap from shrinking too much as it cools is to do the entire job in the kitchen, if you can get the mower through the door of course.
Just wanted to say thanks! Everyone else out here like "Easiest way to remove a tire!" *Uses $200 tool*. You do it with a few screwdrivers and some sweat. This is the way.
Good job. Thats almost exactly how I've done it in the past except I use a claw hammer to pop the dust cap off and tap it back on. Otherwise the local shop charges $25.00 to do it . I save the money and do it myself.
Nice vid! I came here to see how to put the dust cap back on.. haha. You can just bounce the tire about once when putting air into it instead of using a strap. That will work on car tires also as long as you have a air nozzle that will lock on.
If you lightly clamp a vice grip to the very edge of the rim you don't have to concern yourself with the bead chasing you around as you go putting the tire on....
watching this because I have to change out a tire for the first time in my new lawn tractor….laughing at your Crocs…which I am also wearing currently 😂😂
The video is very helpful. My only question is how do I "throw" air into the tire? I was planning on using my portable compressor. ha ha ha! Seriously, thanks, again! Much appreciated.
Great video and tips. I have a Craftsman Yt4500 that I replaced the rear tire on (similar to how you did it). Only trouble is that when I lowered the tractor again, now it won’t engage in drive! Go figure. I think I forgot to set the emergency brake. The transmission engage lever at the rear when pulled or pushed won’t engage the drive gears now. Now another problem to fix… and the grass is getting longer…. 😮
This didn't work for my 4 ply tires. I got about 2 hours in with only one new tire half on before I called it quits. Took it to a local tire shop and they did it for $40. Well worth the money
I also just did this today lol. One tip: my tires were hard as hell to get off. I ended up laying them on their side, grabbing a 2x6, place it on the tire (with the other end on the ground like a ramp), and jumped on the 2x6 which popped it off :)
CUT OFF THE OLD TIRE, use any circular saw, or grinder, use a good sized pry-tool (dull-rounded), to hold the tire away from the rim... cut the bead Also, use a large CLAMP , to break the bead... no air (hand ones work good) Lastly, use some motor oil around (both sides) of the new tire bead, and STAND on it to put it ONTO the rim, (one side first, clamp, use a rag to clean up the oil later) firmly hold onto something (pole, table) while you stand on it.
Much harder job on the small stiff-sidewall tires on the front of my zero turn. I’ve been fighting with the tire and wheel trying to get the tire back on the wheel. No success yet.
@@mgoodell76 I’m sorry but I can’t remember exactly. I believe I used a long screwdriver, pry bar and ball joint tool to pry it off. They are extremely hard to remove without proper equipment, in my opinion. It’s also a challenge to reseat the tubeless tire on the rim to fill it with air. I used a couple of ratchet straps to squeeze the tire and force it onto the inner rim.
Me and my dad been trying to get our old lawn mower rim and tire and we did all the stuff to get the rim off and it just won't get off do you know what could be holding it on by chance?
If u took off the clip & washer, & it doesn’t have a bolt in the middle, u just have too pry it or pull it hard to start it. That happened to me also. Once I got it to move a little, it came off 👍
When you inflate the tire to seat the bead, removing the core allows more air to go in faster. Once the tire is seated, remove the strap, install the core, and air it up.
@@robertheinkel6225 I must be dumber than I thought. I thought the little stem in the middle of the valve had to press against the middle of the air chuck to allow the air to flow from the air hose… if you pull that stem out, how what allows the air to flow from the hose?
I changed both tires myself the last time I put two new tires on the front of my riding mower. Wanda, I would add one thing. For the cheap cost it's worth purchasing tire removal spoons which will remove the risk of damaging the tube.

A little dish soap on the tire bead makes tire installation a hell of a lot easier !

Glad you enjoyed it
Easiest way to get dust caps off is to soften them up with a heat gun. They come right off.
I'll add something to this. I tried the strap which didn't work. Instead I left the strap on, and did the lighter trick, which worked like a charm.
Good job. Thats almost exactly how I've done it in the past except I use a claw hammer to pop the dust cap off and tap it back on.
Otherwise the local shop charges $25.00 to do it . I save the money and do it myself.
Did you heat the cap with say a hair drying before using the claw hammer
No, but I do do dunk them I boiling water before I put them back on. They are so much easier to put on that way.
Thanks for being awesome!
Absolute legend, getting the knees involved sure make it easier! Thanks for the tips.
Nice vid! I came here to see how to put the dust cap back on.. haha. You can just bounce the tire about once when putting air into it instead of using a strap. That will work on car tires also as long as you have a air nozzle that will lock on.

The video is very helpful. My only question is how do I "throw" air into the tire? I was planning on using my portable compressor. ha ha ha! Seriously, thanks, again! Much appreciated.
Remove the valve core, and pump as much air into the valve as you can. Tighten the strap more to push out the sidewalls to seat the beads easier.
The condition of your inner rim just inspired me to just replace the whole rim with tire
Thanks man! Big help today
Great vid, thanks man!

Is there a keyway in your axle and rim? If so, the key probably fell out when you pulled the wheel off the mower.

Why not carb cleaner to make tire seal?
Hey, no fair. You said you didn't have help. Thanks for the how to.
Soapy water in a spray bottle helps mount/dismount

Wouldn’t be a bad idea in case you don’t get all the air out and fight that too when taking it off.
Thin needle nose pliers can get it off too

How do you put the clip back on when it won’t go on
CUT OFF THE OLD TIRE, use any circular saw, or grinder, use a good sized pry-tool (dull-rounded), to hold the tire away from the rim... cut the bead Also, use a large CLAMP , to break the bead... no air (hand ones work good)
Lastly, use some motor oil around (both sides) of the new tire bead, and STAND on it to put it ONTO the rim, (one side first, clamp, use a rag to clean up the oil later) firmly hold onto something (pole, table) while you stand on it.
Here I go, I have no other pair of hands I’m solo on this thank you
Where did you buy the tire
Just use dish liquid on the inside of dust cap and it will easily slide on.
Thank you Zack
Much harder job on the small stiff-sidewall tires on the front of my zero turn. I’ve been fighting with the tire and wheel trying to get the tire back on the wheel. No success yet.
How did u end up getting it on?? I’m having same issue on my front
Once I got it to move a little, it came off 👍
❤😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🎉Excelente explication, I appreciate
What about the back cause I had a John Deere and the back rems didn't come off
Why do you have to remove the Schrader valve? What was the purpose of that?
When you inflate the tire to seat the bead, removing the core allows more air to go in faster. Once the tire is seated, remove the strap, install the core, and air it up.
@@robertheinkel6225 I must be dumber than I thought. I thought the little stem in the middle of the valve had to press against the middle of the air chuck to allow the air to flow from the air hose… if you pull that stem out, how what allows the air to flow from the hose?
I remove the retaining clip but the washers won't even think about coming off the front hub.??? Snapper L200
