There have to be hundreds of videos on RUclips showing how to mount a new tractor tire, but yours is hands down the best there is. So simple, so easy. The best part is, no games or nonsense in your video, just simple instructions. Thanks so much, you are a RUclips gem!
I love learning. At 72, I have struggled with small tires like this for years. The last lawn tractor tire cause me so much grief that I bought a whole new tire and rim assembly. Now I am confident I can salvage the old one. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Haha. I'm 70 and have done the same thing. I could have taken it to a shop, but I'm too stubborn. This video makes it look easy, but I'll bet I'm making up new swear words before I get it done.
Forty plus years of fighting lawn mower tires and I never thought of mounting them on a post. When I saw your bar in the vice, I said that will work just like an old Coates 40-40. Thanks for the idea.
I don’t believe I have ever left a comment on a RUclips video before. DAMN! This worked! I was so frustrated that I was ready to drop $50 on a Harbor Freight small tire changer! This made my afternoon, and I got the lawn cut! Thanks much for this short, sweet and ingenious video!
I had one of their small tire changers to use on go-kart wheels. It wouldn't even break the bead without bending. Harbor Freight's motto should be: Designed to break, and built to stay that way!
@@davebryant8050 HF sells a set of socket extensions that are extra long. Those are handy, so I bought a set, Thinking what could break. Zero moving parts right? The square end of one just twisted right off. You'd have thought it was made of brass, it was so soft. I don't think the steel had been correctly hardened. Harbor Freight: Designed to break, and built to stay that way!!!
wow!! genius!!! thank you...I'm still dreading putting on new tires ..never did it .....but at least I've got a fighting chance now after seeing your vid!
Occasionally you run across a RUclips video that is actually helpful...sometimes extremely helpful. I put this video into the extremely helpful category. Thank you very much for taking the time to help so many.
I teach a high school small engine class. We have been trying to use a donated Harbor Freight tire changer but it doesn't like these smaller setups. I tried your technique last year and loved it. It's now the standard method for changing tires in my class.
That's so cool! I actually just did another video showing some other methods on the same size tire but without a vise or special tools. ruclips.net/video/BeZLCK4NCjs/видео.html Thanks for watching!
Every 4-5 years I come back to see how to do this again when my casters wear out. This is by far the best video I've ever seen in 20 years on small tire installation!!!! Thanks a lot. I'll be doing this in the a.m.!
Just spent hours trying to get the tyre back on - within 10 minutes of finding the tools you advised, the tyre is on......URRAH !!! So easy - thank you
I worked in a tire shop for several years and we'd get the occasional lawn tractor tire that would come in. We always struggled with mounting the new tires! This technique is awesome, and I will be adopting it for my at home DIY projects.
I’ve had excellent results breaking the bead with a Record woodworking vise. It opens up about 18 inches and you can line the tire up in the vise to avoid the rim and slowly and carefully tighten the tire in the vise and break the bead. Just reverse the tire in the vise and break the other side of the tire bead. A sledge might work but one errant swing and you are fixing your rim as well. I used a long 3/8 inch extension as an axle on my 11x4x5 Scag front tire and clamped it into the Record vise - works great. My Record vise has sacrificial hardwood jaw inserts that really grab the 3/8 extension with zero damage to the extension.
Appreciate the knowledge. Was always a 2 screwdriver guy struggling . Only had to replace tires for my tools/machines a couple times so haven’t had much experience but this will definitely help for next time
Excellent!!! I fussed with my Deere tractor tire for an hour before I brought it to the local mower mart for them to change it. Next time I can do it myself.
Great video.. Thank you.... to break the bead, I place the wheel (without air and with valve core removed) on my smooth asphalt laneway. (or lawn...but not gravel) then very carefully drive over the edge of the tire until the bead separates from the rim. Great tips thank you
Best video ever on these small rim tires. I ruined a brand new tire today and bent the rim trying to put the new tire on. Now to order a new tire and wheel already assembled.
Well, that was a brilliantly simple, clear and easy to follow demonstration. I’ve saved it for later reference. Needed this a couple of years ago before I bent a wheelbarrow rim and damaged a brand new inner tube.
Thank you for a really good video on changing these tires. I have been messing with these suckers for close to forty years. Your method is simple and easy. Thank you many times over!
Wow , great job , I bought one of the mini tire changers from Harbor Freight , even it didn’t work this good , the rubber gasket finally was damaged & I gave the whole thing away .
Thank you for sharing the tricks! I was having a terrible time trying to mount my new 15x6-6 tire on the rim. Your rod in the vise method with the vise grips kept everything anchored perfectly. I decided to use some cheap HF tire irons I had already bought and had the tire back on in less than 2 minutes. Much appreciated!!
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I have a commercial grasshopper mid mount lawnmower, and I had a hole in one of the small tires in the front. There were no tire shops open today and I had the tools to do it and a bench with a vice and this really save me a ton of mowing time.thanks again. Awesome video.
Of course, I see this video the very day after I give in, go to Harbor Freight, and buy a mini tire changer. Another set of vise grips would have been so much cheaper. Thanks for posting. That was so cool! UPDATE: After trying the "Harbor Freights Way" for about an hour and did nothing but get really, really mad, I watched your video again. I wasn't able to squeeze the little 6-inch tire as you did to get it back on (maybe I could have done it 20 years ago) so, I got 4 Erwin Qwik-Clamps to do that part. 3 or 4 minutes later, the tire was back on. thanks again for posting this video. I'd still be over there, grunting like a crazy man, if you hadn't.
Unbelievable, freaky simple!!! Just did mine with bare hands a vise grip and a small vise, the jaws of which were small enough to grab and lock-down the hub. Thankyou.
One thing I think you forgot. When you go to air it up, sometimes the bead won't settle into the rim and the air just escapes. To remedy this problem, put a belt around the tire at the center of the tread forcing the bead into the rim, then air it up.
Best, quickest, safest way i have ever seen. Straight to the point. Short and sweet. You could own (how to video's if you did that every time. Good luck.

Found this vid. Thank you. It makes changing tires and fixing flats super easy! If I ever get the chance I would like to buy you a nice frosty beverage(s)! Cheers!
I found that leaving the valve stem out then giving it a good 'punch' of air would also set the beads easier. Then you put the valve stem in and inflate.
Great idea. I will try this on my old tire that doesn't have much flex in it. Edit: So, I tried it and this is a great way to hole the tire in place while working for sure. I will use it from now on.

From my point of view the naming of the rim correlates to if I would say shop on Amazon and wanted to upgrade rims on my truck, that would be the common description used for the metal part, similar with tires, just the rubber part and lastly buying wheels for a trailer or golf cart, wheels would get me new tires with rims.

Back in the late 70's I worked in a body shop/ used car lot, and they had a manual tire remover that I used on occasion that worked on the same principal. I don't remember exactly how it kept the tire stationary. It was quite a chore getting 14 and 15 inch tires off the rims.
My papaw had an old bumper car jack he'd setup to break the bead seal. Set the foot of the jack where the tire meets the rim. Set the lifting part in a groove he made in an I-beam support for the garage. Just start jacking and the foot of jack does the rest. Guess the same thing can be done with a modern jack between tire and frame of car. Will have to try that.
Great video ❤ it if it won't air up I put a ratchet strap around the center of the tread. It forces the beat to go on. Then I air it up without the valve stem seat the beads and then put the valve stem back and thin air up to the working pressure. I use 10 PSI. 😊

try breaking the bead loose with a hammer on one that's been on a mower about 20 years, also try it in cold weather
