    I made an improvement to mine that works great. most small wheels have at least 2 holes thru them, I added a few links of chain and a eye bolt. I attached the chain to the base and run the eye bolt thru one of the holes and put the nut on. Now the wheel wont turn when you are working on it, one that didnt have a hole I popped the valve stem out and ran the eye bolt thru that hole . Really Big improvement on this tool and works great

    Just a helpful note on Mounting the Changer so you can use it.
    If you don't have a Vise mounted to a sturdy bench you can get a 4 foot legnth of 2x6 or 2x8 and Bolt the Tire Changer on to that. Then put it in your Driveway and simply role your car or truck onto the end of the wood. You have to kneel to use it but it's locked solid.

    • @michaelhendricks7117
      @michaelhendricks7117 Год назад +1

      Use 4 lag bolts to secure it to the top of a tree stump. And put blocks of 2x4 under the side of the tire you're putting pressure on to prevent bending the all-thread.

I'm not a weak guy either. I saw 1 guy use a pair of vice grips to keep the tire down under the rim. But it just gets on the way. Have a good one Doouble Wide 6.

    I just placed the tire on the ground and used a bottle jack against my hitch to break the bead. Then put the bottle jack in the center of the rim, and against the hitch, to stabilize the rim to remove the tire. Works pretty good if you don't have an actual tire changer.

    I like the fact that you put the valve side down. Similarly, you locked the rod under the disk that stopped the rod from moving out of the position where it is supposed to be, between the tire and the rim. Bravo and thank you!

    Great videos! Not sure you mentioned it but the rim has a “drop- center” that you use when dis-mounting/mounting the tire. Place the tire bead in the drop center and then the opposite side of the bead can be easily slip over the wheel rim.

      Yup. Found that out the hard way. This is especially the case if it's a deep set rim that has a deep side and a shallow side. That 'drop center' you mention is on the shallow side of the rim and the tire can only be removed and reinstalled from that shallow side.

    Nice video. Ive been holding my rims by 2 punches in the vice, there is 2 holes for weights on my rims. I like the looks of that tool, I will get one. I prefer a 412 valve stem which is the shortest I've been able to find. I put valve stem towards center of tractor, and weight on outside of rim. Valve stem on outside of rim is more likely to hit an something.

    I made a mount for this that fits into my receiver hitch. It sticks out far enough that the tailgate will open and the main leg is adjustable up and down. I use mine a lot and I made another cup with a rubber gasket from an irrigation pipe that drops over the main 5/8" shaft so when I tighten the top nut it clamps the wheel from both sides with rubber. Wheels do not spin in it now. I also made me a T handled wrench that fits over the top nut so i can spin it down real quick and really tighten it. It works really good now.

    I always mark where the valve stem is on the tire. I have had locust thorns break off and you not find them feeling around the tire. With stem marked, you can find the hole and make sure you get the piece our and not have to patch it again. I do love the video, I will definitely use the bolt next time instead of holding the tire or breaking it down while still on the tractor.

    If you forget the valve stem, there is a tool that installs it from the outside of the wheel. It uses a rod like the one you have, only not jointed, and a cone that you push the lubed-up stem through. Personally, I usually put a tube in a new mower tire, because they always seem to leak eventually.

  • @beastinahalfmode
    @beastinahalfmode 5 лет назад +19

    Know this is an old video, but for anyone curious. This would've been a fair bit easier had the tire been warmed up before installation. Either set it out in the sun for a good 30+ minutes, or use whatever you have to heat it up. It will make it far more elastic and if your tire is warped, like this one was, it will fall back into its intended shape on top of becoming more elastic.

    I haven't had to change lawn tractor tires yet, but I DID remove old and install new tires on a small boat trailer a couple of years ago.. It was a TON of sweat-popping, knuckle-bustin work to get them off and on WITHOUT a proper tool.. The main issue was stabilizing that small rim enough to get the amount of leverage you need to work.. it's nearly impossible to stand on a 6 or 8 inch rim lol..

    Good video, but that tire did go on easier than they usually do...sometimes you have to use a vise grip to grab the rim to stop the tire from following the mounting bar.around .....and it works better if it is bolted down to a steel plate or pretty good sized piece of thick wood..that way you can work on it at table height or put it on the ground...some tires get very balky and yo have to try different work heights to get it to cooperate.....it is easier to just use a utility knife or a razor to remove the old valve

  • @1575murray

    Mounting snowblower and other small low pressure tires have their own challenges due to their width and small diameter as opposed to car and truck tires. Be aware that they are low pressure tires and don't use too much air pressure when trying to seat the bead as that could cause the tire to explode. Liberal amounts of soap and water can make this job easier.

    I would have liked to watch you make it take air. LOL... I had to use my big air burst tank that I use for my semi tires to get it to catch the bead.

    What I use is a bumper Jack from the 70s put the back side around the rim put it in the hole on your bumper on your car Jack your car halfway off the ground a rim that's been on for 20 years will break down

    Try that on a 40 year old Wheel Horse spent two days just trying to break the bead another day spending grinding the rust and painting the wheels inside and out

    Great vid Bob! I've been thinking about getting one of those. Looks pretty easy compared to doing it the old school way.

    Very good, now I see how that plate is put on they changing device, ok. But I watched this video because I thought it would change a tire with a 'tube', I have been really struggling to use this device and change the tube? Just trying to get the tube in and out of the tire about destroys your hands. Is there another video show tube change?

    just cut the stem off... and I guess I've been lucky. Can't remember who showed me - he was very old and I was very young. I just stand on the tire to break the bead and to reinstall the new tire I use two tire irons/spoons. Put the new tires in the sun for a few hours to get them back into shape. I've never bought tires and didn't have them squished. When they are squished they are hard to seat the bead. But - Good vid!

    That tire changer seems to hold up. If you read the reviews on HF site people complain that it's cheaply made and bends
