Dr. Greg Carr's Warning To Black Conservative CJ Pearson About 'The Machine' At Univ. Of Alabama

- DUring THursday's edition of #RolandMartinUnfiltered, Dr. Greg Carr issued a warning about "The Machine" at the University of Alabama to Black conservative CJ Pearson.
Dr Carr explained there is a "confab of white fraternities and sororities on the campus there in Tuscaloosa [at] the University of Alabama [that] have worked against any type of racial progress on that campus for years now."
He continued, "You don't play football, you don't play basketball, you're not a revenue generating Black on the campus of the University of Alabama - I hope as you're navigating that space in Tuscaloosa, you pay very close attention to how race operates not in the abstract but on that campus where you are brother and I wish you to continue to learn and grow because I think you want what I want - what we all want, which is for all of us to to be able to be human in the world without anybody oppressing us."
Carr added, "... you right now you're in a very dangerous place and [on] a dangerous campus."

I have to disagree. I think this young brotha believes what he says and is sincere. Elder? He sells us on purpose. He knows better, but makes money off it.
I understand to some degree Black conservatives relating to and valuing the idea of self reliance. That ideas is one shared historically by Black separatist, but that alone is not enough for me to choose to associate, let alone accept, all the other tenets of conservatism, especially the racist ones. Black liberals on the other hand, to our detriment, are too often afraid, to be self critical. Malcolm and Farrakhan are the two most notable examples of Blacks, who would always make demands of Black people. Even Jessie Jackson decades ago said "what does it matter that the doors of opportunity are opened to you, if you are too drunk to stager through them".
I'm hearing more and more Black people speaking critically of the behavior of Black people, and sounding like they vote for Republicans. At the least they sound highly critical and frustrated with Democrat politics. With all the talk of "the system" and structural racism, one would think Black people would overwhelmingly be supportive of the Green Party or Progressive Democrat candidates, but such is not the case - not even close.
I suspect another factor in Blacks being conservatives is that they reject the stereotypical Black culture that is projected to the world. I don't identify with much of it either, but again that is no cause to except another culture that is detrimental and hostile to my essential being. I see this other culture as being largely rooted in social Darwinism. My question to those of us on the political Left is - what is the culture of the 'Left' rooted in? I ask a similar question of Black people who would think that White people are devil and who often also say that, we are a spiritual people, implying that we are the anti-thesis of them. I ask, if this were remotely true, how are we to conduct ourselves, given how we describe or think of them?

How do we conduct ourselves around white America these days? Having grown up in a small town and going to school with a lot of caucasians who I called "friend", I was shocked to see so many turn to Trump. Hell, it wasn't just the ones I grew up with. Quite a few later on in life, especially the church. Now I see that "evangelical" doesn't mean loving your neighbor as yourself. So, to stick with the Bible theme, I would say we should conduct ourselves in the manner of Matthrew 10:16. Be as gentle as doves, but as sly as serpents. I've seen so many on the right back the recent voting changes that have been implemented in several states by the GOP. When you tell them it's an attempt to restrict voting, they can't or don't see the big deal even though you point to how it weakens the '65 Voting Rights Act.
@@noeltaylor3594 I would think it is rooted in the higher ideals/values of human beings, whether they stem from religious/spiritual belief or philosophical thoughts or idea. I would think it recognizes the interconnectedness and interdependency of individuals.- the idea that no man is an Island. This pandemic and climate change should remind, if not teach us that, any act by a single individual can impact everyone on the planet.
The family is a mutual aid institution, and society is just an extension of that. The way we live should reflect that. The creation of Kwanza was an attempt to remind Black-Americans of this idea. Socialism and Patriotism are both mutual aid concepts and tools. Capitalism, however is inconsistent to these, as it puts more emphasis on the well being of the individual and not the group.
Some simple basic questions that Liberals fail to put to Conservatives and ourselves, is one, how much wealth should an individual be allowed to accumulate in a world of limited resources? What is a fair amount of compensation for an individual's labor/service or contribution to a finished product, is another fundamental question. Lastly, In a competitive situation, there will naturally be those who win and those who don't, in this scenario, which is our reality, how should society view those who don't win, and how should those who don't win, view themselves?
This last question, is very pertinent to Black-Americans. The way I see it, is that too many of us judge our self-worth on an un realistic materialistic standard. This results in the attitude shown, and the actual words spoken, by many of us, that our people sell drugs to survive - excusing and justifying, and even legitimizing it. How does the deadly and debilitating effect it has on the buyer and seller, foster survival? How can people say this, as they have witness so many deaths and the deterioration of so many communities, as a result of this? It is the worst form of predatory and exploitative capitalism, as the person at the top reaps the vast majority of the profits and benefits, while the workers on the streets assume the greater risk, and the public in general suffers from the product also. And that is just the obvious harm, we can easily see.
There is a historical lineage, from monarchies, imperialism, colonialism, slavery, and capitalism. There all are predatory and exploitative. There all stem from the Darwinist mentality. Liberalism/socialism, at their basic form, must be the antithesis of these. It is basically the best of our being, and we should always strive to be the best of ourselves and the best that we can be.
To that end our culture both our immediate Black culture and broader American culture doesn't foster that. Too often and in too many ways if does the opposite. To the extent that happens, with us, its impact on us is greater, as so this pandemic, proves true the old saying that, when America catches a cold, we get pneumonia.

But, just to be clear, are you saying that you believe socialism is a better economic system than capitalism? Other than the theory itself (which sounds very appealing on paper) how has socialism been practiced and how has it eliminated the cons you speak of as associated with capitalism?

Our schools do need to change and update our curriculum. Our 10th grade American history teacher in PA insisted the civil war was about states rights, but that falls apart as soon as you read their secession documents.

I've seen the young man do different interviews and that is his M-O. He never answers a question directly but instead goes around the subject and then kind of laughs or smirks when called out about it. He is student government and very aware of how the technique works when you dont want to look bad or answer a question that would derail your own argument. The problem is that a lot of people are wise to that now and he doesn't realize it. The other reason he does it is because he is for the insurrection and for the racist agenda but doesn't want to say it because he needs to be viewed as this young black man who is saying that is not how it is so that others believe it. As a well educated senior Black man with numerous degrees at the undergraduate and graduate level this woman speaks the truth. I grew up poor in Birmingham and was raised by my grandmother. I was exposed to every type of racism against people of color you could imagine but I did not let that stand in my way to become successful in life and earn six figure salaries. The discussion that is taking place in this podcast with this young articulate Black male Republican is no surprise to me regarding his feedback. I have had the same conversations with many well educated Blacks in corporate America and many will cut your throat just as fast as the most racist Whites. They take on the same mentality as their White counterparts in order to fit in. This young man is a prime example of that. Once he graduates from Alabama he will continue to be used by ultra conservative Republicans to show a false sense of inclusion. I am a diehard Alabama fan and it saddens me to see this young Black man fighting and trying to defend a cause that does not have his best interest in mind.

On the other hand Black people like Michael Eric Dyson use the argument of 'respectability politics' today in a way not originally intended. Today the concept implies that all Black people who talk about personal conduct, do so, from the perspective of appeasing or putting White people at ease, or even winning the flavor of White people). The concept originally goes back to Black church women of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the term specifically was coined by author Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham, in her 1993 book 'Righteous Discontent'. It was simple part survival strategy and an attempt to integrate, more into the dominate culture. No matter how one interprets this, it cannot be said, that the primary reason was for the benefit of Black people. It was not to appease White people.
People like Dyson, make this exact charge when any Black person speaks out against Blacks killing one another. They lump it in with conservative ideology, because White Conservatives use it, to deflect from the government's and White society's responsibility to constructively address the unjust killing of our people, by police officers and racist citizens. Dyson and others ignore that Blacks have historically made public pronouncements against the disproportionate killing of each other. Hip-Hop had the stop the violence movement in the 80's. No one back then said us killing one another was "not a thing'", "because people kill people they live near".
They are fixated on Bill Cosby's scolding of Black youth/adolescents. They make the cliché statement about " it doesn't matter whether you wear your pants down on your behind, or if you wear a suit. They are still going to see you as an n-word". This is not the point. It is about the value of Black life and how over the last half century or so, it has be eroded, by us more than anyone else. This is not an instance of a misinterpretation of the original idea of 'Respectability Politics', It is a denial of reality, and practicality. To continue in this denial is to gaslight ourselves.
