Kind sir, would you tell me the nearest city to you >500K pop. not incl. the one you're in (I'd like to know roughly where you are on the planet -- seems I recognize ur accent. An Island? A small green Island with no such city?
As a PhD myself who has taught on complex health issues (medical geography) I very much appreciate your use of published data and the references back to the original research as well as your thoughts on study design and the limits to what can be inferred from that. What actually drew me to your podcasts in the first place was trying to figure out my own illness and glean clues as to what could be done about it. I mention this because I'm sure there are others who will follow a similar path to your videos and those of other health vloggers and be interested in trying all of the current trends such as fasting, ketogenic diet, taking supplements, eating nothing but meat, etc. You are circumspect about the efficacy of all of this and it is very helpful. The problem for those of us with complex chronic illnesses is that we get conflicting and often useless advice from the medical community (which we pay dearly for) and become desperate enough to latch onto anything that promises even the hope of improvement. Many of us want to 'try all the things.' I can say from sad experience that things developed and tested in well people because they improve some health markers may actually make sick people worse. To anybody reading this, please heed my warnings if you have come here in a fragile state. Be cautious with any intervention, take things slowly and in small steps as you find that you can tolerate them. Listen to Nicolas when he explains the complicated and ongoing nature of the scientific enterprise and don't expect quick or simple solutions to complex problems.
Thanks, Claire. I hope you've been able to get some relief in your illness. I can certainly understand the 'try all the things' approach - it is appealing, especially when feeling hopeless on dealing with one's own condition.
Youre doing great, bro. I've looked at these studies for years now, cholesterol synthesis, keto, etc, all that for over a decade. I'm nowhere near your level and appreciate your work.
What makes your analysis of data worth listening to is that you are qualified to interpret it and you have the right mindset when you analyze it. If subjective and or objective data raises a red flag then you have to question it. 👍
I come from Europe and only consume European fruit, vegetables and animal products. Talk to some farmers here in Europe and you will hear how much they complain about the restrictions. And yet, eating only animal products and sometimes seeds and nuts has helped me so much for so may problems.
I wonder if you might be able to collaborate with and learn some things from Nick the Nutrivore, he's super sharp when it comes to science and debating and is extremely thorough and organized.
Personal thought/request: Would love a yt short or short video that has a summary of "points of interest" for general health, weight loss, exercise, diabetes, cancer, etc. While I believe that people need to spend the time researching this material to internalize it better, I always keep running into a new point that I hadn't heard about that sounds really useful. Today, it was creatine. I feel like a topic tree would make my research path so much more effective and less circuitous. Maybe I should try making it 🤔 idk. Time to cool my brain.
I stumbled on your channel one day a few months ago and commented to myself that I tripped over someone who is not stuck in an echo chamber. I have been trying to get to a point where I can adopt a better lifestyle to improve my odds that my liver cancer will not have an environment that it will thrive in (I’ve had 2 major resections in the past 3 years). I have been researching various proponents of various diets and lifestyles. However, it has been difficult comparing these videos because most lean towards one extreme or another. I look for something more in the middle that also produces significant general health improvements. I have spent the past 18 months following a combination of items that are prevalent in the areas identified as the blue zones. I am not a zealot and do not adhere to a diet when the situation doesn’t support it (if we go out to a restaurant or are invited to friends, or my wife prepares something she is in the mood for, I will consume whatever is put in front of me). However, I have had a fantastic result loosely following a Mediterranean style diet in conjunction with intermittent fasting. When I began this lifestyle change, my doctor agreed to support me, but also informed me that he didn’t see much promise in my efforts. I was on meds for high cholesterol, type II diabetes, and high blood pressure. However, after about 6 months I caught his attention because he was seeing significant improvements in the right direction. By the 1 year mark he was shocked. I had reached the point where I had gone from an A1C of 8.9 down to 5.5, my blood pressure dropped from 140’s/90’s down to 110’s/80’s and my cholesterol levels had dropped. He took me off my meds, but warned me that he was still skeptical and had to be convinced that it was sustainable. Well, I just had my last visit with him at my 18 month point and I’m still improving. My weight loss is slowing, so I’m guessing I will stabilize at some weight and that will become my new target for maintenance. He chuckled at me as I was leaving and said he still had reservations about maintaining this over the long haul, but said if I do that I should write a book about it. I simply chuckled back and said “There are hundreds of books written about this stuff - we just have to get people to read them!”😂. I have no idea if this will help me achieve my desired endgame, but I know it won’t hurt - I haven’t felt this good in decades. My gut feel is that if you get off the SAD and the processed foods anything will be an improvement. You are starting to convince me that my gut may be right. Thanks for your efforts. There will be people who will benefit from your work! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Good stuff! Thank you for this. I think it would be interesting and highly productive to hear you cover the **bioavailability of nutrients** in a video. This is a talking point of strict carnivores. Many argue that there is a lack of bioavailability in plant foods. This is usually coupled with an argument against "anti-nutrients".
On the subject of the carnivore diet what I would like to see are good studies (some long range) comparing it to a whole/raw organic plant based diet rather than a SAD diet as much of a SAD diet is processed/chemicalized and we are pretty well aware of its general effects on health over the last 50+ years. Some of the potential long range risks of an animal based diet are elevated IGF-1 due to high protein intake which is linked to cancer, high LDL and CVD and the toxins generated from cooking meat and the lack of fiber and adverse effects to gut health/immune system. We also have some evidence of long term effects of the carnivore diet with Eskimos who generally do not live very long and have an elevated incidence of CVD. I would be cautious of adopting this diet for the long term.
@@Physionic Excellent! I will look forward to it. Appreciate your efforts to reference properly done studies to determine some degree of truth. Rarely done on RUclips.
I hate calling myself a "carnivore" because it seems so damn fad-ish. I just eat a lot of meat, some dairy (mostly fermented), and I thoroughly prepare the few vegetables I eat or I buy them fermented. Oddly enough, my LDL cholesterol is in the 90s, HDL in the 80s and Tryglicerides in the 30s. Haha I must be built different 😆 I am eagerly awaiting Dave Feldman's research paper on "Lean Mass Hyper Responders", a group that has sky high LDL, but exceptionally healthy markers for everything else.
@@Seanonyoutube At what dose do fermented foods lower cholesterol? I use a half cup of saurkraut with pork occasionally, same thing with fermentented cucumbers with burgers. I normally end the night with a serving or two of cottage cheese or yogurt. I grill or air fry mostly, and then smoke brisket or other roasts on the weekend.
@@Seanonyoutube No supplements. I'd also say I'm pretty fit, lifting weights almost every day and doing dedicated cardiovascular workouts a few time a week. I'm a 190lbs with visible separation across all muscles, not just "abs".
@@Seanonyoutube Why would I want to lower my LDL even lower? I understand that arterial plaques will not develop if I have LDL levels of a child how much would that actually extend my life and at what cost?
By any metric, I'm in excellent health, so in that context, is there any benefit to lowering LDL? In the group of people that have excellent health such as myself, is there any data to support lowering LDL, assuming its in a normal range?
I would also question your assumption that my diet consisting of mostly red meat isn't good for "lipid lowering". Has there been any data on groups such as myself where its shown that LDL is significantly raised? Saturated fat in beef makes up slightly less than half of the fat, the other portion obviously being unsaturated. Of the saturated fat, a third of that fat doesn't seem to have an effect on LDL. I wonder what the net LDL cholesterol effect is of red meat🤔 My "hypothesis" is that it may not actually raise LDL too much, but I'm open to different ideas🤷♂️
I stumbled across your channel and consider it a stroke of luck for which I am eternally grateful. Your content is wonderful, helpful, thought provoking and educational in the extreme. Your honesty has instilled trust in your listeners. I can’t tell you how many “helpful” videos I’ve watched to discover that in the end, all they wanted was for ppl to send them money, or buy their thing. Your content is refreshingly honest and giving. And I love your delivery. You come across as caring, introspective and proportionate in your messaging. You just seem like a really sweet guy who cares about people. An academic nerd, by all means…but someone your listeners can really look to for answers. I hope you can keep up the great work you are doing on this channel 😊
Diets are individual targets as in such each individual person(s) gut biome / immune system is affected by different nutrients and proteins. Our bodies need protein and the source of food should contain proteins amino acids micronutrients. My opinion is we are like plants and don’t need to consume 3 or more meals per day. You should feel hungry though not starving. You gut and intestinal system should not be processing food on a continuous basis. Nutrient deficiencies are too much or too little of what your body needs. I been fasting for over 4 years one meal a day though I do not make it a ritual. I eat what I want as well. I’m on no medications in my 50s .
I cover funding sources in my analyses - some are industry funded, some are not - they all agree on the link between LDL and heart disease; however, none of them are on statins and they still show the link. I need to look into the statin research, however.
Sad to say but this monolog is a waist of time-better do shorter clips, so the old and restless dudes like me can have the patience to watch them. Many of the things you say lack any practical sense-fex you say staying on OMAD elevates the sugar but this is just bullshit-I am on OMAD for more than an year and I reversed my DT2 and once a week I do 48 hours of fasting and my sugar is below 90! So how sugar can be high when you fast? Where it will come from? etc... another point-isn't it better to tell us how to lower LDL, if it is SO bad for us? What and how to eat, to get it down? Your doctors make us crazy with data and every one of you agrees to disagree on very important health issues...fex: don't look at LDL, but the triglycerides and the ratio between triglycerides and HDL...etc...it just will never end 🤷♂
Regarding fiber: I do know people who have problems with fiber. I learned this as we discussed my changes in diet and how I have increased my fiber intake. One of the recommendations I was given when I started the increase was to make sure I drank plenty of water. When discussing this with the people who claimed to have problems with fiber, they all felt water to be unnecessary. I took that to mean they didn’t bother. Perhaps that was missing for the people in the study. If you take a fiber supplement, you are cautioned to drink at least 8 oz. of water with it. Why wouldn’t you need the same amount even when getting it from a food source? Different gut bacteria may also play a role, especially if the fiber is over feeding one type and under feeding others. That’s one of the things I have been looking into recently. I’ve yet to find anything close to a definitive answer. Maybe there’s nothing yet to be found. Unfortunately, I’m not in a position to do the testing myself. 😢
Isn't it crazy, how one little detail like that could potentially render the results of a study completely useless? Or at least compromise them severely? And also: if laypeople like us come up with details like that...how are the actual scientists not diligent enough in their study designs, to account for these factors? Or to report them accurately. It always makes me want to tear out my hair, if I hear about some promising study, that has flaws, that could have been remedied very easily.
I would like to think that most naturally occurring sources of fiber within whole foods are already packaged with water. Even the driest of foods do contain water within them.
Recently found you about a month ago and am consuming your content at a leisurely place, while watching your videos as they come out. You are sharing informational that is much needed and in a way that is convincing especially considering your background and qualifications. You do have a nice calming voice, and calm is one thing this world needs today. Thank you for being you and sharing your insights! 🎉❤😊
You say there is nothing magical about meat. Wrong. Meat is a near-perfect food, providing all the essential amino acids and essential fats that we need, and just about every micronutrient too. And meat contains zoochemicals, such as creatine, only found in meat products, that have profound benefits on our health and metabolism. If I had to choose just one product to live off, it would be meat. I would survive and thrive on meat. No other food product can boast the same extraordinary benefits of a simple piece of meat-whether red or white. And yes, you do need to do more research about the benefits of traditional farming and raising animals. Anyone who has worked on a small farm knows that animals play a huge role in maintaining the ecosystem of that farm. Many of these farms enjoy a closed carbon system, because of their animals. Without the animals and their waste, they would have to import the fertiliser into the farm. Animals play a key role in maintaining a healthy farm and land health, including the all-important humus. Look at the large agricultural conglomerate and all the damage they are doing to the land, destroying the humus.
Invite Prof.Dr.Peter D'Adamo from Connecticut as a sort of sparingpartner on genetics - cancer- generative medicine...tell him greetings from Isa of Switzerland....😁🤩🤭😏🤗😏
'I have a book on creatine, but I don't publize it, I don't care that much about it...' Dude 😅 If you invested the time and effort already anyway, let people know! If no one wants to read it, fine, that can't be helped. But I bet there are those out there, who would love to have a look at it.
On the carnivore topic: i believe that the best evidence for what we should eat (as the base) is what we evolved to eat. a good study suggesting that we were carnivores is: "The evolution of the human trophic level duringthe Pleistocene" - by miki ben dor it convinced me but im also not used to read a lot of studies. I really think you should read it if you have time.
miki ben dor is great. Unfortunately listening to people question carnivore is useful up to a point because everything should be questioned. However in this case its like watching children crawl across broken glass to get to the right answer.
So, the metabolic theory of cancer, as I understand it, says that mitochondrial damage leads to a lack of reactive oxygen species (mtROS), and the presence of reactive oxygen is what triggers the programs which multicellular life uses to maintain and repair genome. I.e. damaged mitochondria reverts the cell to the original single-cell programming, where changes in DNA are actually a good or at least a neutral bet, for that cell, not for the entire organism ... mutations might be beneficial, after all. So, the chicken and egg problem has a reasonable sounding explanation for "mitochondrial damage causes mutations in genome (by removing the genome maintenance)" - however, what would be the mechanism where "random mutations in genome somehow lead to mitochondria being damaged"... no such explanation?
Your channel is a real gem!!! Reguarding your humor: I really like it and it helps that all the data doesnt get boring... Id like a video of yours/your take on refeeding syndrome (Science, how to avoid it etc). Keep up the good work!!!
Haha, people can take it or leave it, but I'm enjoying expressing myself a bit more of late, so it's here to stay - glad I'm not the only one. Thanks, CH. As for refeeding syndrome, I'll need to look into it!
You do have a soothing voice now that you mention it! Perhaps a new niche? Could imagine the demand for science-based ASMR infotainment to be quite significant. 😂
I love your videos with all the information you kindly provide us, thank you so much. I do believe you, now I also believe the problem is not the meat if you eat tge right meat, grass fed grass raised, and grass finished. I know a lot of people that also use the wrong oils like corn, soy, and other to cook and they are burning the oil while cooking, on top of this this they cook at very high temperatures which alters tge composition of the meat and fats turning into cacnerogenic. Must be the wrong way of eating and the overeating as well. I know a lot of elderly people that are afraid of eating red meat and they stop eating it all together, but they still eat chicken which are mostly grain fed which is no good at all, and don't eat dinner, but cake or cookies and milk, they are not getting enogh nutrients and get Heart disease, Cancer, Alzheimer's, broken bones, and much more. So I don't believe is the red neat if you eat the portion appropriated by age and size, actually when you eat meat you eat less than when you eat something else, unless of course, that you have a overeating habit. I have my portion feel great and also lose body fat, have nice lean muscle, look and feel much younger than my age, have gorgeous hair and nice body, just walk my dogs
I'm 4 months into Carnivore. I do 5 days meat and fast for 2 days. I feel better than when I was on carbs and certain ailments had disappeared. thumbs up from me at this stage.
I just found your channel and subscribed. I really appreciate your informative and educational videos. You are among a few on RUclips that are brave and courageous enough to call out BS and tell it the way it is even if it ruffles some feathers. Other You Tubers that I also trust that are willing to do the same include: Simon Hill Of The Proof Podcast, Dr Gil Carvalho of Nutrition Made Simple, and Layne Norton of What The Fitness
Nicholas, I stumbled upon you about 3 months ago and since then have listened to all your podcasts. It is an honour to listen to you knowing that you put so much time, effort and research into them. Don't stop Quirky. It is fun. Thank you.
I have chronic back pain. Not severe but always an issue. When I saw the length of this video I couldn't see myself sitting at my computer for that length of time. I decided to lay down on the couch and listen to it through my tablet plugged into my stereo for the sound. As there was no video that needed to be watched I closed my eyes to give them a rest. One of the main interests was the LDL subject. As it was a lengthy segment, I'm not sure at what point I fell asleep. 😴 I woke up somewhere in the fiber segment. I went back to the start of LDL to replay what I had missed. Thanks for the nap. 🙂
I'm sorry, but that study about not needing Fiber is absolute Hogwash! As someone who has done Keto, the lack of Fiber catches up to you and constipation is a major issue without it.
On whether or not there being something «magic» about meat on carnivore, i think it’s fair to ask what other kind of food could the average person consume singularly and be even remotely satisfied? Maybe fish, but i can’t imagine eating ONLY potatoes, rice, cabbage, honey, kilos of mangoes or even eggs every day even though i love all those foods. What makes meat so uniquely satisfying?
Great question. I think most people land on this lifestyle out of desperation, particularly with difficult auto immune issues. Speaking for myself, my results in the past three weeks are keeping me motivated, even though the concept flew in the face of conventional wisdom and my personal appetitie. I was desperate enough to give it a go, and about three days in I was... uniquely satisfied: ) I have totally removed the option of a dopamine hit from food from my life. Now I have the energy to enjoy other things more.
So at the intersection of the Carnivore question and the LDL question is: Is LDL still a concern in the absence of the other things included in the SAD? Does a lack of grains, sugars etc modify the effect of high LDL on the body?
Man I should be editing, actually I should be sleeping, but I'm binge-watching your content and you're making me want to drink coffee and it's like way after 10 pm....
My husband and I, both 61- started our Carnivore way of eating 9 months ago. For me it has been life changing. I was in chronic arthritis pain from degenerative arthritis diffuse through my hips and lower spine confirmed on MRI. I would consume NSAIDS in very high doses every day before and after any exercise or activity (golf and pickleball) with little effect. I was so worried about the lessening quality of my life at only 61 years old. Within a few weeks on Carnivore, all of my arthritis pain was gone. For both me and my husband, we eliminated our pre-diabetes and lowered our A1C. We both lost weight, but have gained lean muscle mass with a focus on consistent exercise. My waist size went from 33’ to 28”, and my waist in high school was never 28”. I went from a 10-12 to a size 6-8. My husband lost his belly and is at his leanest weight. We are so satisfied from our way of eating that I never have a craving for sweets or processed foods. I can be around friends consuming French fries, pizza, sugary desserts, etc. and I simply don’t care. We have added in fermented cheeses, and fermented vegetables like sauerkraut and kimchi, as well as onions, garlic, pickles, olives for garnish. We also eat Greek Yogurt and wild, organic berries a couple times a week. We also eats lots of seafood- wild salmon, wild argentine shrimp, scallops in addition to our mostly meat consumption of grass fed beef and lamb. Occasionally, we have a few pecans or macadamia nuts and a few nights a week we might have 1 square of dark chocolate. I guess we have expanded slightly into a bit more of a ketovore, whole food diet. In the past, when we tried the Keto diet, we always fell off the bandwagon by falling into the trap of eating a lot of fake “keto” foods. On carnivore, we are eating real, single ingredient foods, and I think this has made the difference. We are so satisfied and happy with our food every day, and it seems exceptionally sustainable. We also gave up alcohol and haven’t looked back.
I just watched the carnivore section while eating steak and eggs for tea. I was "healthy" vegan for 5 years. Gained 12kg and a big long list of health issues the worst being low mood, brain fog, cognition issues, bloating, gas, chronic awful pain 24/7. Carnivore diet... all gone in 5 weeks. Over the past year I've tried multiple times introducing plant foods. I can't do any grains or dairy whatsoever. I can eat fruit (I suspect it amps up my tinnitus), carrots, pumpkin, lettuce, small amounts of sweet potato. That's it. All other veges = gas and pain. So no beans, peas, cruciferous veges, nuts or seeds. Each type of plant food uses different gut bacteria to break it down. If you lack any or/and have leaky gut that's where the issues are. Meat heals leaky gut. So as an elimination diet I think it's great. Some of us may never be able to go back to a wide range of plants. Which is fine as many healthy tribes live off meat year round and just 3 or 4 types of seasonal veges.
Excellent, but he doesn't care, His angle is to ride the middle margin forever... that way he can never be truly wrong, his vids are all speculative. - Do you.
@judyculang3766 lol. There isn't one but vegans have more of a junk food diet which is basically anything and everything processed etc. Or "healthy" which is mostly wholefoods.
Ive seen various carnivore diet vids on youtube and some of the comments amaze me..."i eat bacon and steak every day and havnt been to the toilet in 3 days and i feel amazing". This is how delusional some people are.
Re carnivore diet i always wonder who baked the bread, let alone grew the grain to bake it with and the vegetables during the ice ages. If eating meat is dangerous the human race would have been dead a long time...no?
Perhaps it's not the eating of meat that's unhealthy but the fact that people eat it 3 times a day, they include processed meats containing nitrates etc. and that animals are now pumped with hormones and antibiotics, their feed is unhealthy and their lives can be traumatic... who knows? As Nic says, the studies don't exist.
unrelated but I have a request: could you do a video on the effectiveness of vitamin D supplementation? there seems to be mixed evidence regarding its effectiveness. love your videos!
Nothing should ever be a debate.. I feel we are all asking questions in order to learn. Epistemology (study of knowledge) is a good term to reference.. asking questions to consider new perspectives in hopes to understand the bigger picture should be the goal
On the bolding topic. I read many years ago, that it is a genetic "fault" and those genes were located in the X chromosomes, which is the reason why women rarely goes bold , because they inherit 2 X chromosomes from their parents and those 2 chromosomes support eachother. Men only gets 1 X chromosome (from their mother and an Y instead , from their father) and if the hair-genes in that X are "faulty" they're more likely to go bold. This is also why men wanna look at their mothers father for boldness. If your mothers father is bolding, he has passed that chromosome on to your mother, and there's a chance (maybe 50%) that she has passed it on to you. It's many, many years ago that I read this and I don't know if the explanation has changed with time. Genes are probably not the only factor, but a big one for sure. Btw. I've started supplementing with GlyNAC , I'm soon to be 50 , so I'm hoping it will benefit me. I also take Taurine 5g or so also hoping to get some of the benefits . They're good studies, but are standing much alone unfortunately. Hoping for more studies on GlyNAC and Taurine. Stopped NAD+ and Resveratrol. The Sinclair studies turned out to be a scam almost and vitamin b3 may even be harmful, in those quantities. 😒 Thanks for science based, evidence-based videos and knowledge 👍😊
I hear you about carnivore. Well thought out. But I think the key factor here is presence/absence of glycogen. Ketones are incredible man. I try to cycle back into glycolysis periodically to support exercise and get into an androgenic state for a while, but I always have to come back to gluconeogenesis and ketone production. Going back into sugar always reminds me of why I left. It's a hard switch; a totally different state. I think you have to fast or mimic fasting. The body responds to scarcity in incredible ways. Glucose gives and takes, and it can wear you down and age you over time. I know that to be true.
My auto-immune skin condition completly disappeared after two doctors told me i would have to manage it basically forever. My chest pains disappeared almost immediatly 2 years ago. Weight is super easy to maintain. Energy is up, sleep is easy. I've been vegan, paleo, keto, none of them compare to carnivore and or paleo/vore. Carnivore makes far more sense from a 5 year old understanding of human evolution, no PHD required. It makes far more sense that nature optimized us for hunting over gathering before we figured out agriculture.
7:00 it's bias, but for me not the way you may think, like many of us have failed over and over on a high carb diet and seen great results on carnivore, so yea bias makes you believe some things easier than the others. and we don't see our own biases, generally speaking! :D
I think that there is a diet that’s “age” appropriate … any diet that’s NOT SAD (maybe even Sad) is a good diet when young … I’m not sure the diet matters until you get to 60’s .. at that point ldlc regardless of one’s opinion is beginning to make its presence known … you can ignore ldlc you can’t ignore a heart attack or stroke … have one of those and you won’t be so anti ldlc gung ho … My healthy 60yr old buddy, who had elevated ldlc (not terribly awful) didn’t take stains because of “muscle aches” … had a heart attack when on a 40 mile bike ride and HR got to 180 … he’s on a big statin now and magically no muscle aches. See how you feel about ldlc when you get a stent and are told “ carry on with your high ldlc and you’ll have another MI” … not many people would be so tied to dogma when faced with reality. Truly believe diets and food ratios have a season … spring / summer .. everything goes .. also SAD … autumn better start with those veggies … winter … well .. maybe lean more heavily on fish / meat …after all , if you’ve made it to your winter … WTF. I’m plant based with a fish “twist” only for ldl cholesterol reasons … if I got cancer .. I’d immediately switch to keto … Diet is a tool for health NOT a religion. Not a hill to die on .. cos .. you may actually die in the freekin hill. (I’d try plant keto first .. I would have no issue switching to animal protein .,, better them than me)
Dr. Shawn Baker should be on your show. I am carnivore and it works. Hubby is most likely 75% on it and he’s 55 and for the first time ever, he has muscle we can see. His arthritis has stopped and he’s shocked. His psoriasis is almost gone. He’s very thin and lost no weight but traded a little tummy for chest and arm muscles. Plants hurt me. Bladder pain. But carnivore doesn’t make me hurt.
Creatine memory doesn't seem dose dependent. Prokopidis et al. Nutr Rev. 2023. I'd love to see if they're things you can do to improve the creatine pathway in the brain (and, less importantly, liver). Edit you've talked about gaa, please do not take gaa because of methylation buildup.
Nick, thanks again for all you do. I am going to listen to the whole video, but thought sharing with you this comment on Carnivore diet, I tried Carnior diet for one month, only because I had mild elevation of ALT [one of liver enzymes] and I learned from Dr. K.Berry that high carb was one cause which was my risk factor. Long story short, sure it worked brought my Alt to very low level, I lost 12 Ib in one month and for the first time in my life i actually learned how to lose fat [you know I am a physician:)], my point is there are many who struggle to loose wt and try hard, but don't get the result , or such results, I believe they don't know how to lose fat and if they do true carnivore plus intermittent fasting [which comes naturally, since you don't feel hunger in Carnivore diet as much as anything else]. Also as you said once they get some results, it is like resetting of their insulin resistance and other issues to normal healthier conditions, in such a short period of time, then they are able to eat smarter than in the past and keep a healthy wt. Especially for morbidly obese I think that is a the starting path unless they already have dangerous level of LDL and cardiac situations like having had MI or chest pain they can still do it but monitoring LDL and cardiac more tightly. So for those severely obese but still on healthy side I do recommend "intermittent Carnivor", loose some significant wt in 1-2 months, [I recommend while still doing Carnivore, avoid highly saturated fat meet, avoid butter and coconuts oil, use smarter fat like olive/Canola oil and for protein eat Salmon/Sardines, I.e smarter carnivor, dairy from goat/sheep]. I call it intermittent that is once you know how to burn fat , if your LDL on that diet goes up, then back off and use smarter approach like i describe as "smarter Carnivore" or intermittent Carnivor, to keep resetting your insulin sensitivity and lowering your TG, and raising your HDL and reducing your inflammation. Like the saying for alcoholics when we say "keep quitting", that is they can try to quit and if they relapse learn from it what went wrong, so for obese to lose wt but learn how to do it smarter Carnivor, and smarter without bringing their LDL to dangerous level. The truth is we all must keep our blood sugars from spiking too high and keeping it on low normal if we want to avoid many diseases. Thus best way to do this to avoid carbs with high glycemic index , a diet close to Carnivore. Hard to eat as much Protein on plant based diet without adding the carbs with moderate glycemic index.
Say, I work for a company that makes F-18 FDG, a radioactive glucose analog, that's mostly used for finding tumors. If a cancer thrives on fat, does that not work? How is it located?
On Cancer, I realise you are a deep researcher, but I’m with Dr Thomas Seyfried, don’t feed any type of Cancer,no carbs and fasting and if necessary combine it with Surgery Cemo and Radiation at least it helps Cancer sufferers help themselves.
You're also going to have the fact that people want to hear good news about their bad habits in the comment section but the channel moderators only allowing for that and deleting opposing
yah, it's happened to Me that I wanted to link research-studies on a particular channel, and they didn't even go through. then the author of said channel "called Me out" on "spewing nonsense without providing evidence", hell, it wasn't nonsense and I did have evidence, but I believe some creators don't allow what they don't like. regards.
18:07 It is something special in the meat. It's called a compete nutrtion profile, all aminos (in complete, bioacessable form), all natural fats for ketone production and brain health, all the essential vitamins and minerals, including those found no where else outside of drugs. You are correct that half of it is what you cut out, and that's all insulin-mobilizing, beta cell destroying, liver fattening, artery rusting, sugar. And all carbs that aren't fiber, are sugar. Have a good one. Edit: 1:45:38 I appreciate the responsible approach and nuance about cancer, I really do. It is a beast, and not being entirely dismissive of cancer as a metobolic disease, even though it really flies in the face of your narrative.
Re: fiber, I've had at least one doc bs me on this question, which is does fiber inhibit absorption of supplements or medication? The answer from the doc was no, but the answer seemed shaky to me. What do you think Nicholas?
I started carnivore about a month ago, and it has been LIFE CHANGING! I remember when I first heard the concept, it sounded so disgusting, but... all my dreams are coming true! Ha ha. NO cravings, sleeping well, springing out of bed and full of energy after a ten hour work day... 12 pounds down... I am 47 and am looking forward to my future like never before. BTW... I ate my first steak this month. I find most meat revolting and ended up on carnivore out of desperation, not because I just really wanted to bite into animal flesh. It's been an adjustment.
I went through a similar "transition " - coming off a high carbohydrate plant-based low-fat diet. Mom was Vegan . Now I am the opposite. Cooking meats was quite a learning experience . 😏 🥓
Just an added note -- I've had a battery of the DNA tests through MdAnderson and they expected me to be "hot" for most of the tests and I was negative on every single one. ????????
Who would definitely like to hear what people write in about healthwise on the good side we all take supplements and there’s so many different kinds. It will help me narrow down stuff that will make my life better. I have an energy problem. I sleep a lot.
Small dense .. large buoyant … I’m kinda ok with that .. I freekin HATE when described as “fluffy” … even buoyant … anyway … more attention being places in VLDL remnants which are much large, buoyant and fluffy and cuddly. I think most lipidologists say that all things being equal small is more atherogenic than large but rarely are all thing “equal”. No idea how you’d “swing” your ldl particle size .. mine was pattern A until i dropped ldl, particle number from 1300 to 520 and they cause pattern B (small) .. but .. do I care .. no … LDLp of. 520 for me maps to apoB 37 and ldlc (calculated not direct) of 30. Ldlc is normally calculated … part of that equation is TG/5 … so .. as you say .. get LDLp or apoB or use non HDL cholesterol
I knew Doctors from many years ago, when I was 2 years old my doctor will sit with my patents an me in his office, he would talk to me, he asked me what was wrong, i would tell him, he asked me if i was ok before I ate, then what I ate, and how much. So he would tell me no to eat that food anymore, for certain time and would give me a list of things that were good for me to eat, and to eat less and only when I was hungry
I happen to think some people can be both objective and critically think, and most people do not (not because the capacity is not there, but because of ignorance and bias).
I agree totally, if you have auto immune and need carnivore or other extreme, then go for it but try to get back to balance (metabolic flexibility) slowly to get blood work right.😊 Ed Q.
On fiber, the FeFiFo study by Sonnenburg et al, suggested the problem and solution by finding all subjects improved immune markers on eating increasingly larger amounts of live and sugar free pro-biotic foods, whereas increasing amounts of fiber had inconsistent results suggesting those missing a healthy microbiome were not helped in the short term, but the combination of pre and post biotic rich food alone was sufficient to improve health.
about the first topic, comedian Mark Normand said it best: Nuance is the new N word. It's unfortunate how many people think dogmatically without ever questioning themselves.
Would it be possible to mention or list who actually funds each study? We all know the outcome of a study can be predetermined beofre it begins based on the money trail.
so I shouldn't fast because it will make inflammation worse? I listened to the section on fasting and inflammation but you went on and on about fat cells etc. and didn't make clear how inflammation was made worse.
Fasting is a tricky subject. Women in particular might appreciate the research from Dr. Bright on the subject, who says that anything that raises your cortosol is unhealthy. Fasting causes stress, but if you live on mostly fat and protein, your body is in constant autophagy because your blood sugars are stable.
I`m gonna be honest here....I never realised how much human body is complex until i stumbled upon your channel. Even tho i don't understand some of the stuff is still fascinating to listen. Great podcast !
Oh, this is something I am 100% with you on - I study it for a living and even I am still blown away on a consistent basis by how it works and how incredible it is. We are remarkable biology. I have so much more to learn and I am SO EXCITED for it. Thanks, C!
@@Physionic looking forward ... and please keep your personality as it is in the current videos. Don't be another cookie cutter or meta or what ever the expression is.
I'm one of those whose autoimmune (from being polypharmacied) is more managed by a high protein low carb diet. After surviving Vioxx, I guess I'm a little cavalier about raised LDL. Thank you for reminding me to retain my perspective. So happy to see your channel grow, love the long form content.
As someone who shares the AI life I’m happy for any of us who find relief and what works for them. Ironically I was the opposite to you. 😂 Have to love our human body. I don’t subb to them for diff reasons but ZOE has good video on protein by nutritional researcher you may like. I believe it was 1-2 mths ago.
Can you please do a video on oxalates? Carnivores have scared to eat vegetables because they're saying the vegetables are poisonous and trying to kill me.
What kind of death does oxalate poisoning lead to? Can it be linked to heart disease or cancer, the cause of death that accounts for about 44% of ALL causes recorded each year? Diabetes? Alzheimer’s?
@@christieanderson1330 i’m just saying calling something poisonous without being able to connect it to any significant health damage seems questionable. And anyone pushing either extreme diet, carnivore, or vegan, is likely to have a bias and be ignoring tons of discrepant evidence.
I have an request. Could you take a look at GMO foods? I‘ve looked into it a bit and found concern that they might lead to antibiotic resistant bacteria. And there is a concern that new food allergies could be acquired. Also their safety has mostly been tested in animal models. I‘m a bit concerned now due to my little research, since the EU wants to loosen up regulations. I tried to find out, if it is safe to try them out once they are allowed. But it sounds more like a big field experiment to me, because there is not much human data, that I found. Since you are better in digging up studies then I am and interpreting them, I would be happy if you could cover it. I‘m talking about health concerns, not the environmental ones.
That's a huge topic - I do hope to cover it, in time, Stella. I couldn't cover environmental topics anyway - I don't have any knowledge on the topic. :)
I’d love to hear yourself and Malcolm Kendrick have a chat about Cholesterol. It would be fascinating and I think he needs challenging, even if he’s right.
@@Physionic Thanks. He’s a Scottish GP / MD who claims to be a leading expert on Cholesterol & CVD & has written several books on this subject; one entitled “A Statin Nation”.
I do hope, there's more news about the cancer/metabolic theory soon. It's something, that will affect almost everone of us directly or indirectly at some point in our lives. I'm 43, so just at the age, where one starts to actually worry about that kind of thing. Wouldn't it be great, to know for sure, which exact diet is maximally harmful to your specific cancer? Even if it was mutation driven, to begin with.
I commented on that video about the carnivore diet sharing Martica Heaner, Phd Nutrition interview on my channel covered that exact study and mention the same issues that you did. You're on it man you know what's up!!!
Matica, as well as others and I think even you called it an elimination diet. And of course this may only result in transient benefits and isn't likely indicative of long-term optimum Health
Currently driving for the next few hours, so I’ll respond to comments when I have a chance. Thanks for all the kind words, everyone - you guys rock. 😊
I've posted and think you are right on.
Can you research if Saturated Fat is bad for you? Been hearing different answers.
Kind sir, would you tell me the nearest city to you >500K pop. not incl. the one you're in (I'd like to know roughly where you are on the planet -- seems I recognize ur accent. An Island? A small green Island with no such city?
All The Best with your PhD.
Thank you 🙂
As a PhD myself who has taught on complex health issues (medical geography) I very much appreciate your use of published data and the references back to the original research as well as your thoughts on study design and the limits to what can be inferred from that.
Hope he pins this.
Thanks, Claire. I hope you've been able to get some relief in your illness. I can certainly understand the 'try all the things' approach - it is appealing, especially when feeling hopeless on dealing with one's own condition.
you should have a podcast with Anthony Chaffee. He seems to be open to discuss the carnivore topic in this context. Would be awesome to see.
Would it yield any other conclusion but that there is mostly anecdotal evidence and more high quality research is needed?
@@oolala53 true but since they’re both level headed and intelligent I’m curious to see how that discussion would go
Would be awesome.
Maybe... or perhaps Dr. Westman.
Always up for a discussion!

Always try to do it for the long videos. :)
Youre doing great, bro. I've looked at these studies for years now, cholesterol synthesis, keto, etc, all that for over a decade. I'm nowhere near your level and appreciate your work.
That's kind of you (and impressive), JD!
What makes your analysis of data worth listening to is that you are qualified to interpret it and you have the right mindset when you analyze it.
If subjective and or objective data raises a red flag then you have to question it. 👍
Thanks, Brian!
I just noticed you almost have 100k subscribers, that's crazy, a few months ago you had less than 10k. Keep up the good work
Indeed! Humbled you noticed.
Mediterranean + IF is a potent combination. Huge congratulations on your MASSIVE health turn around!
(And, so true on your book comment...)
I plan on covering plant based diets soon!
They say the same thing about Massai warriors.Sure, they look healthy but they die at 56... I'm here for a good time, not a long time: )
@@Physionic Excellent!
I wonder what the net LDL cholesterol effect is of red meat🤔
My "hypothesis" is that it may not actually raise LDL too much, but I'm open to different ideas🤷♂️
I stumbled across your channel and consider it a stroke of luck for which I am eternally grateful. Your content is wonderful, helpful, thought provoking and educational in the extreme. Interesting, I always found the militant vegans much more aggressive and in your face about the purity and righteousness of their diet.
I would find the militant vegans reasons as being animal or environmental rights over nutrition.
I’ve actually noticed more aggressiveness from carnivores
The lobby is SO STRONG for the statins, that is why you have SO MANY studies showing association between LDL and heart diseases.
All I know is, if I do Keto and don't eat at least some vegetables, or source of fiber, I will wind up with the worst constipation of my life.
I would like to think that most naturally occurring sources of fiber within whole foods are already packaged with water.
Even the driest of foods do contain water within them.

Hundreds of thousands of years of evolution, the human body is the study, it is the carnivore science.

Dude 😅
If you invested the time and effort already anyway, let people know!
If no one wants to read it, fine, that can't be helped. But I bet there are those out there, who would love to have a look at it.
On the carnivore topic: i believe that the best evidence for what we should eat (as the base) is what we evolved to eat.
a good study suggesting that we were carnivores is: "The evolution of the human trophic level duringthe Pleistocene" - by miki ben dor
it convinced me but im also not used to read a lot of studies.
I have my portion feel great and also lose body fat, have nice lean muscle, look and feel much younger than my age, have gorgeous hair and nice body, just walk my dogs
yah, if One can afford grass-fed/organic.. regards.
If increased ldl just get your 1000mg dha omega3 per day + eat fish 2-3 times (ideally more) per week.
I'm 4 months into Carnivore. I do 5 days meat and fast for 2 days. I feel better than when I was on carbs and certain ailments had disappeared. thumbs up from me at this stage.

Nicholas, I stumbled upon you about 3 months ago and since then have listened to all your podcasts. It is an honour to listen to you knowing that you put so much time, effort and research into them. Don't stop Quirky. It is fun. Thank you.
Yep ut's crazy that the One meal a day some people do, they eat for 3 or 5 hrs continuously,. that's so sick
The mixture of saturated fat and protein, maybe?
Where, how can I get a mug?
- Do you.
What’s a ‘healthy vegan diet’?
His angle is to ride the middle margin forever... that way he can never be truly wrong, his vids are all speculative.
- Do you.
I certainly plan on it - a good topic.
Where can I get your Father's mug?
Look up “Joeveo”!
Thanks for science based, evidence-based videos and knowledge 👍😊
My bias was "oh, please don't let carnivore be the answer... meat is gross. Carnivore was my answer and I'm all in.
I think that there is a diet that’s “age” appropriate … any diet that’s NOT SAD (maybe even Sad) is a good diet when young … I’m not sure the diet matters until you get to 60’s .. at that point ldlc regardless of one’s opinion is beginning to make its presence known … you can ignore ldlc you can’t ignore a heart attack or stroke … have one of those and you won’t be so anti ldlc gung ho …
My healthy 60yr old buddy, who had elevated ldlc (not terribly awful) didn’t take stains because of “muscle aches” … had a heart attack when on a 40 mile bike ride and HR got to 180 … he’s on a big statin now and magically no muscle aches.
Yeah for the planet definitely is not sustainable, but aaaa what if we keep it among us 🤫🤫😉😉 don't tell anyone, only your family 😮
OMAD for me has help me so much in losing weight! 📉 hopefully we get more data on the OMAD diet. You rock amigo, God bless.
On Cancer, I realise you are a deep researcher, but I’m with Dr Thomas Seyfried, don’t feed any type of Cancer,no carbs and fasting and if necessary combine it with Surgery Cemo and Radiation at least it helps Cancer sufferers help themselves.
Anyone ever say you remind them of the cartoon character Daria? I've never watched that show but I've seen her on Beavis and Butthead.
You're also going to have the fact that people want to hear good news about their bad habits in the comment section but the channel moderators only allowing for that and deleting opposing
yah, it's happened to Me that I wanted to link research-studies on a particular channel, and they didn't even go through. then the author of said channel "called Me out" on "spewing nonsense without providing evidence", hell, it wasn't nonsense and I did have evidence, but I believe some creators don't allow what they don't like. regards.
I love true hardcore research, sorting through bias baloney.
Nuance = jazz music, antiXORism. Bias = long-term XORism, eschews randomness.
Once you get your terminal degree, all meetings become doctor's appointments. Nick Offerman joke.
One more if I may: what is the mechanism that makes any med or supplement survive the liver? Two extremes: accutane and taurine. Thanks.
I agree totally, if you have auto immune and need carnivore or other extreme, then go for it but try to get back to balance (metabolic flexibility) slowly to get blood work right.😊 Ed Q.
so many studies, so many subjects, and so little time!
Tell me about it... 😬
Are there any studies illustrating how you been hidin' them GUNS???
Yes, they're all associative, so basically not real science. 😋
@Physionic keep up the good work brother!
Well I like my coffee piping hot does he have one that makes it hold the temperature constantly 🔥 Hot?
On fiber, the FeFiFo study by Sonnenburg et al, suggested the problem and solution by finding all subjects improved immune markers on eating increasingly larger amounts of live and sugar free pro-biotic foods, whereas increasing amounts of fiber had inconsistent results suggesting those missing a healthy microbiome were not helped in the short term, but the combination of pre and post biotic rich food alone was sufficient to improve health.
Excellent insight, Justin - thanks!
putting people asleep? could it be that you are so boring? Na, if it were we wouldn't even go to your channel
about the first topic, comedian Mark Normand said it best: Nuance is the new N word. It's unfortunate how many people think dogmatically without ever questioning themselves.
Did he say that? Good ol’ Mark. Nice.
Would it be possible to mention or list who actually funds each study? We all know the outcome of a study can be predetermined beofre it begins based on the money trail.
I list the funding source in all my detailed analyses.
@@PhysionicThanks for our reply. Where do I find that?
Wheew. About a third through and it's time for a break 😅
Just wanted to leave a comment for the algorithm - very interesting so far.
Drive safe!
Thank you!
Your Father must be so proud of you
Did he let you keep his coffee mug .
so I shouldn't fast because it will make inflammation worse? I listened to the section on fasting and inflammation but you went on and on about fat cells etc. and didn't make clear how inflammation was made worse.
I thought he said the inflammation actually leads to clearing out the senescent cells and resolves after the fast.
No - fasting is fine for anyone who can tolerate it well.
True. You would think we were actually created from intelligence and not evolved from sludge.
I would enjoy this much more if you were not wearing a shirt.
Thank you, C - I hope you continue to experience recovery using the diet. I appreciate it.
I don't know. Dr Anthony Chaffee says plant foods are poisonous. But I love some vegetables
@@christieanderson1330 i’m just saying calling something poisonous without being able to connect it to any significant health damage seems questionable. And anyone pushing either extreme diet, carnivore, or vegan, is likely to have a bias and be ignoring tons of discrepant evidence.
@@oolala53 thank you! I feel better now 😌
Oxalates are on my next batch of topics to cover. :)
Don't know who that is - I'll need to look into him.
@@Physionic Thanks. He’s a Scottish GP / MD who claims to be a leading expert on Cholesterol & CVD & has written several books on this subject; one entitled “A Statin Nation”.
Gratuitous comment for the algorithm
