I had no idea this footage existed. This to me was peak Johnny. 1968. The hair, the sound, everything. Even Luther before his passing. This is incredible footage
its crazy that within a year (1967 - 1968) Johnny goes into a cave alone ready to die in it from being so messed up on pills and such. Then in 68' he goes to Folsom Prison and records the album everyone loves today.. Later that year he loses Luther due to a fire. such a insane year if you think about it.
The star of the show here is Luther Perkins once again! His style was so simple, that's been heavily copied, and yet nobody can even get close to sound and feel that Luther had. He 'was' the sound of Johnny Cash.
I once read somewhere that he could no longer adjust his guitar's volume to a lower setting, and therefore muted the bass strings with his hand, creating the signature sound.
Only sad truth, yes it was Luther's style, But out of the Blue Bob Wootton came along and within year had Luther's style down to a tee and then went on to improve it for 30 years backing Cash. Wootton was a much better guitar player and added a bounce to the style that stood out even more. Listen to the hit version of "Man In Black" could Luther have played that?
Johnny Cash is my number one musical hero, the rebel who found Christ. This mans testimony and music has helped me through some dark chapters in my life.
unique voice, meaningful lyrics, and awesome guitar style that was his own...I love how he shared his gift with those who truly needed uplifting and he recognized his musicians-gracious.....RIP Mr. Cash
Most beautiful 68 footage i have seen of him to this date. Its propably the only footage of a concert that comes close to a televised 68 folsom concert. Also very nice to see luther so clearly and the sound is amazing. I mean san quentin was nice but the late 60s sound with luther was perfect.
I love this video a lot, its the perfect evidence that the common train beat *is not* how the song was actually played on drums by W.S. Holland for most of Cash's career It also perfeclty highlights the energy of Cash's show
This is from a series that ran though 1968. It was similar to Hootenanny in that the show was broadcast from a different military base or post every show and had a different group of artists. As you look at the members of the audience, keep in mind that the vast majority of them were headed for Viet Nam.
Truly a blessing he was amazing. Hope to see him perform in heaven one day. Jesus died on the cross for our sins and it’s through him we have eternal life let’s get heaven crowded.
Well, I love Johnny Cash, and I think Johnny Cash was the sound of Johnny Cash. However, that guitar player is really good also! They’re all good, all three.
Luther is my number one Guitar hero and has been since I was 4 I'm 21 now anyone want to guess who my number one Guitar hero still is you guessed it Luther Perkins because of him I use flatwound strings
This is what you call LIVE. No pretending to sing.
Yeah, not lip syncing like I've seen before.

I do. From the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, where my arthritic fingers are learning to play “Ring of Fire” really, really poorly.
Can't hate a legend

Great video
A couple of months later Luther died when he fell asleep while smoking a cigarette. August 1968.
God that’s depressing
Always thought he left the stove on for some reason
@@Mhm-yt7ne He fell asleep on the couch while smoking a cigarette. Terrible! The Statler Brothers sang at Luther‘s funeral.
@@lonestarbugHe hadn't touched a cigarette in a long time at that point that was a murder made to look like an accident

Always amazed me how Johnny just always looked old. Hard living I guess. He was only 36 here.
I believe they are at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls and this was shown on ABC on Jan 24, 1969
Weird how this was filmed in June of 1968, but aired Jan 1969. Luther is seen here but would be dead by the time it aired.
@@kadeberrier3799also weird, is sources say this was recorded in an airfield in Missouri

If this is not the coolest fuckin front man that ever lived, i dont know what is.... The fuckin balls to say what he said at the beginning... Wow!
Is this Johnny Cash program somewhere available without the watermarks?
Afraid not. This is the first time I've seen clips from the Operation Entertainment TV series.
Luther had his sound down to a T
Anyone klnow what Air Base this was recorded at? My dad flew KC-97s as flight engineer for 15 years.... 1950 to 1965
Sheppard AFB, Texas
Pretty sure this was recorded somewhere in Missouri.
