Mate, you are a diamond! This is what RUclips is so good for. Brilliant tutorial, really well explained, especially the trick of using the hacksaw to score the wire. Followed your instructions exactly and nailed it. Thank you.
For crying out loud... Wish I'd seen this last week, using the hacksaw to score the armoured cabling would have saved me a lot of headaches! Thanks for a great vid.
Thanks for your time creating this clear video, much more confident asking for glands etc, rather than saying the back blobby part at the ends of the cable. Cheers
@@TheDIYGuy1 Managed to do the gland, but may have to redo, as I brought a 4 way rotary isolator and not sure if the Neutral wire will be OK in the N1 slot or has to be in the Neutral separate side connection as literally an inch too short. Waiting for the earth nuts so will redo if need be. Thanks for your time.
My first comment it years but needed to say I was just a bit worried about doing an outdoor connection but youve made it nice and clear. Excellent video!
Such a clear demonstration! The narrative delivery is wonderfully paced and reassuringly calm. (I needed to install an external junction box when I cut clean through an SWA cable next to a tree root with my loppers!🤦♂️
Excellent video👍 clear and informative. One thing worth mentioning is that the steel wire armour should not be visible at the bottom of the gland assembly when you've tightened up the last waterproof nut with the rubber seal. If it is then the armour has been cut too long and the gland is not waterproof, despite the outer rubber shroud.
@@Gubalicious it’s also much easier to slide the shroud, locking nut and ring along the cable and past the connection point before scoring and spreading out the steel wires in preparation for the gland to be fitted. This helps prevent any struggle with fitting the gland and injury to the hands
It’s a lot easier to push the shroud over the cable and the part of the gland needed before you expose the steel wires that can make it harder to do this
@@savingelectric Nasty mate, I feel for you. This happened because the content provider failed to show that stage of the process because he’s not experienced enough to teach others yet. He struggled himself that’s why it was edited out 😂 If it’s any consolation l, I was reckless back in February and lost a tiny bit of my fingertip due to a slip up with a fresh blade. Was savage
there is a much easier way than faffing about with a hacksaw simply use a standard plumbers adjustable pipe cutter, it will cut through the outer sheath and score the armour wires in seconds perfectly straight around the cable
@@TheDIYGuy1 I am in the gas plumbing trade. So the 'the know how' of the task u were explaining was not new to my eyes. But I was very impressed with your steady way of communication. Speaking clearly and not waffling in your video must have been really positive for any newbie watching. Keep up your flow and keep your videos coming.
Personally i would place the shroud onto the cable first. I'd offer it up to the cable pushing it as far as itll go to gauge where to cut so it's a good tight fit. Having cut your shroud you either push it on directly in the direction it fits or push the shroud on the contrary way to how it fits and turn it inside out once on the cable. Whichever way is the easier. This depends on the thickness of the shroud's rubber. If its stiff thick rubber then it's best to put it on cut end first as it'll be installed.
I also use Visegrips ( Molegrips in Gt Britain) to securely hold the body of the gland whilst using a good quality adjustable spanner to tighten the nut. Then bend and twist the assembly to determine that the SWA strands are all gripped tightly and there's no movement or play.
Thanks mate, Excellent video, well explained, and excellent tip with earth flange. Most of all thanks for not ramming home aboyt suscribing at the start of the video. I only susbscribe ro decent people with gould content, that dont demend a subscribe at the beginning
@@TheDIYGuy1 I took my swa from my old concrete shed via a waterproof connector the wires were different from the power in my old shed red, green, blue, and my 2.5mm colours were black , brown, grey . Can you recommend a CU for my shed taking in mind it will be supplying to 4 sockets 2 small led strip lights and a light switch.
The shroud should always be fitted FIRST. Easy way to do it and get the cut right is place it over the cable end, push hard and the cable will be seen better, cut the top of the shroud off as required, then take the shroud off, turn it around and slide it back onto the cable past the point where the gland is going. The install the outer parts of the gland. Then make the cable off. Doing this way you are less likely to forget the gland and less likely to splay the armourings on the cable when you fit the gland. You also need to mention that this is a CW - Waterproof gland for use outdoors. Do not use BW glands as they are for use inside.
@@TheDIYGuy1 I need some advice and hope you can help. I've installed a BG consular unit in my garage and run armod cable to the house. What is the best way to connect to the house power supply?
Just for a future tip, strip less length of the metal strands- as you want the top of the gland to water proof on the outer sheath not the metal strands. Your way- over time the metal strands rust like crazy and let water pass through as it isn’t a good seal
Hi mate, In my house we have 1 junction box (Outdoor) and from there 2 SWA cable 2.5mm come out for 2 different areas. They are plugs but we use them for lighting and charging some battery tools in the garage. I'm worried maybe the consumption is not dangerous or maybe the installation. Excellent video mate!
Well done video, congrats. I need to connect an armoured 3 core black cable like that one in your video, but I am not sure about the size. External diameter is 17.7 mm. What gland should I use? Thanks😉
Great video! Regarding scraping the paint on a metal enclosure, if the metal enclosure has a earth stud/terminal in it for the earth lead from the banjo/earth nut to attach to, is scraping paint necessary?
Mate this is EXACTLY what I needed to see. One question tho, I'm using 4mm SWA to power & light a log cabin. What kind of cable do I send through the wall to the main house consumer unit?
Great video, can you spur off any ring mains socket providing you add a fuse spur? I.e. when all ring sockets are already protected by a RCD at the board?
This is really helpful, thanks. I've a couple of these to do shortly - the only bit I can't work out is that little earth strap! Is this a complete thing you can purchase somewhere, or do you need to just buy some crimps and make it yourself?
Great video, very helpful! I'm looking to make off an SWA gland on a SWA Ethernet cable into a very similar junction box - does the SWA still need earthing? And if so, how would I do this, given there won't be an earth to connect to? I can't find anything online that covers this and it's driving me crazy haha
Hi mate. When you have 4 core, red, blue, black, yellow, is the connection to the meta box (metal stands) to CPC of the 4 core as no CPC in the 4 core.
Perfect Vid for what i'm doing. Lots of detail which is perfect. Quick question. Where i wanted to terminate my armoured cable into an Outdoor Weatherproof Junction Box is few feet from a water butt . Is this a problem as regards regulations? Thanks in advance and keep the vids coming
It should be fine, the only time this would have trouble for regulations is when you're installing it in a "special location" a.k.a a bathroom, if you're still worried use a higher IPX grade junction box
Great video thanks. I'm planning on installing an outdoor socket from a socket in summer house and this will help. When it comes to the socket, should I also use the earthing nut and earthing cable on it?
Great video, very simple to follow and easy to understand. Can I ask, what do you use to cut the cable to length? I have bought a 25m roll of armoured cable but need to cut it at around 18m.
