  • The Irish Rail weedsprayer train captured between Athenry and Tuam in May 2001. This is the last train to traverse the Athenry - Claremorris route to date (May 2021) apart from the IE inspection car. Filmed by Ian Walsh.

I missed that train by 2 months when I took a drive to Kiltimagh and down to Claremorris, + Ballinrobe Rd crossing/ footbridge and at the first few level crossings: south, on the N17.

I think that driver's name was Eamonn, I was with a former friend and we did Mullingar Athlone with the crew the day before that Athenry Claremorris run.

Never saw a video, of a trip starting at Athenry to Tuam. The sheep on the line, really made it West of Ireland! Very charming. Wonderful!

Great to hear the craic! What a different era in Ireland. World changes so fast now even in comparison to then, although it’s not THAT long ago!

This must have been one of the last trains to transverse this section. The last passenger train Athenry - Tuam - Claremorris was in April 1995. It was the Irish Traction Group's special charter train called the Tuam Freight Liner. If you put in that name into RUclips, you will find a video by Alan Wiffen. I was on that tour. Virgin Trains had cancelled the Down Irish Mail (22.00 London Euston to Holyhead) out of the timetable. Luckily, Pathfinder Tours of Gloucester block booked some seats on the tour, and laid on a road coach to Holyhead, to connect with the sailing to Dun Laoghaire. Living in London, I went to Wolverhampton to pick up the coach. The bus driver fell asleep at the wheel, and the 60 seater bus went over a grass roundabout on the A5 road in Anglesey, waking everyone up ! The things us Brits will do to travel on Irish trains !! Great video. Thanks.

It wasn't actually the last passenger train on that route, another special traversed it in 1997 (video on RUclips somewhere).
I've seen that video from 1995 its well worth watching and captures scenes never to be repeated like that again. Its clear looking at the video our railways outside of Dublin to Cork/Limerick/Athlone were starved of investment. It took a serious derailment on the Westport line to kick the government of the day into action to upgrade the radial routes to modern safety standards.
On the day that the derailment took place a special train had traversed the Athenry-Claremorris line en route to Westport. The intention was the special would return to Dublin via Athlone, but this route was now impassable. So the train was rerouted back from Claremorris to Athenry, where it reversed and went to Dublin!

Cheers. I was not aware of the other train in 1997.
When the ITG Connaught Campaigner, which I and 15 mates were on, did Limerick Ennis Athenry, there was a derailment at Athenry, forcing the tour to divert to Galway, and a three hour delay. I had arranged for the guard to tell Dublin Control to hold the ship at Dun Laoghaire. We had MetroVick 001. The train was met by Oliver Doyle (?) at Dublin Connolly and he authorised the driver to ignore the speed limits ! Poor 001 got thrashed and sadly did not work afterwards. I think we knackered her. I wished I had kept my mouth shut, for upon arrival in Dun Laoghaire, we found waves going 30ft over the sea wall. We sailed in a Force 9. Most were sick, apart from one mate who went for breakfast. The chef had spent all morning cooking, and only one person turns up. So he has four sausages, and four rashers of bacon, piles of egg and baked beans etc. The chef asked if he wanted free seconds, thirds and fourths ! After eating sixteen of everything he returned rather green looking ! Because no one wanted to put up 250 in hotels, Sealink arranged for BR to hold the Up Irish Mail at Holyhead. We arrived right time at Euston. Not bad for 3 hours late at Galway.
I think most governments of most countries under-value their railways, which is a great shame.
We have been back to Ireland, but even the wife said, it is not the same now the 071s had gone off passenger duties. Both of us have cleared all 21 x 071s and 111s for haulage. Happy times.
