Black was a status color in the Renaissance era, when it was difficult and expensive to achieve a true-black textile dye, unlike today. I read a fascinating book about the wardrobe of Elizabeth 1 of England, she wore mostly black or white, with some red or gold, gowns.

Though I would like to point out that black was used in fashionable clothing during the Victorian era, at least the latter half certainly, there are many examples of black clothing that isn’t mourning attire, I actually own a few.

Interestingly black for men’s suiting came *much* later than the LBD. Up until VERY recently black suits were only worn by chauffeurs and waitstaff. My grandfather only had one black suit, and it was only worn to funerals, and was surprised my husband only had a black one. For “gentleman” black was reserved for tuxedos. That’s why the Royal family wore dark colored suits and black ties for their mourning wear when the Queen died, and not black suits.

I remember most brides were married in black because since most common folk only had one formal dress that often doubled as a funeral dress. Also because funerals were more common back then compared to today. It was only when Queen Victoria (I think) married in white, did people start clamoring for white wedding dresses

    When you’re discussing 1714, I believe you’re meaning ~1814 Regency/Napoleonic fashions?
The Georgian Era in England began in 1714, but it was very similar to French fashion at the time. French style dominated from Louis XIV until Louis XVI. It wasn’t until the very late 1700s/early 1800s that the style shown emerged (it emerged prior to 1814, but that was a nice number to compare to 1714).

I was surprised not to see Mme. Virginie Gautreau (the infamous Madame X) in the 19th century section, but other than that, wonderful video! Mme. Gautreau's other portraits, one notes, were always striking (given that she stuck to either all black or all white). If memory serves, the Marchesa di Casati was another well-known society figure who made striking use of black.
My favorite anecdote of a woman using black outside of the mourning context comes from Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch. I'm not sure if this was the late Victorian or early Edwardian era, but Quiller-Couch was at a grand ball standing next to a young naval cadet who was too shy to introduce himself to anybody. The men were all in typical evening dress, the matrons ditto, the debutantes ditto. The debutantes--and this will be important in a moment--were all clad in the usual white or pastels with pearls around their necks. In came a striking dark beauty whose first ball this was; instead of pearls she wore only a diamond crescent in her hair. No white or pastels for her, but instead a black gown. The men flocked to meet her. Over their heads this young woman spotted the shy young cadet in the corner. She freed herself from her admirers, laughed, and headed straight for the cadet to ask him to dance. They danced. The cadet came back afterwards, cheeks flushed, stars in his eyes. I've no doubt our young cadet remembered that moment for the rest of his life.
I own at present one vintage black dress from the early 1960s and a black-and-white slip dress. Probably my favorite black dress that I've ever worn was a slinky bias cut number that never failed to open doors for me. I am eyeballing a 1940s style dress with diagonal draping and strong shoulders. So.

I tried a variety of sizes and styles in this brand, but the straps are set very far apart, not a good choice for those of us with narrow shoulders. Dominican Friars's (aka Blackfriars) distinctive habit consists of a black coat/cape over a white tunic, considering they are a mendicant order (ie. must live off of alms/begging) their habit was designed to be decidedly not showy or flashy, so black must have become widely accessible to all classes well before the 16th c. St. Dominic founded the Order of Preachers in 1216. It is possible the black cappa was a later development that was posthumously used as a marker of Dominicans in iconography and other religious art, but I don't know of any evidence of it being a later development, but definitely not as late as the 16th. c., which would be the century that marks the end of the Medieval period for most medievalists.

No one ever made more of a parade out of her mourning than Queen Victoria. Even decades after her husband’s death, she never let anyone forget for a second about her loss. When I read Victorian-era literature, there is always someone stressing about the exact shade of mourning they should wear, depending on their relationship to the deceased, how much time has passed, etc.

Even I, a person that almost never wears black at all, have 2 LBD’s in my closet 😝 I only ever wear them to either a funeral or a party though 😅

Based on what I've seen and heard about the little black dress, it symbolizes a dangerous woman. But I think it's so cute.
