  • Vivienne Westwood is one of the most important designers of the 20th century. Her work spanned decades and constantly adapted and changed to present itself as an arbiter of the zeitgeist no matter where it was. But her early work is really rather important not only in terms of
fashion" but also in terms of general Western culture. While much of Vivienne's early work is boiled down to being the "founder" of "punk". Her work had a much deeper and more esteemed technicality and refinement to it than many give her credit for. And so this video is my attempt to bring a bit more of a well rounded view of Vivienne's work from the beginning of the 1970s to the end of the 1980s to teach both you all but also myself a bit more about the legend Dame Viv.
The Longer Version of this Vivienne Westwood history video: • 5 Early Vivienne Westw...

Always love these type of vids. Living in Tokyo in the early 2000s and being a part of the harajuku fashion scene, it’s interesting to see how much of an influence her collection has on gothic lolita and the Japanese punk and visual kei scenes.

Definitely do a 90s. Westwood's collection of Victorian insanity was used in the Robert Altman movie "Ready to Wear". Of all the clothes, her's was the most memorable.

Vivienne was very influential on many different fashion subcultures worldwide but mini-crini was SO important/influential for lolita fashion. The short cupcake silhouette of her mini-crini skirts is now the foundational silhouette of lolita fashion coordinates. I can't remember if it debuted earlier but she also invented the rocking horse shoe, another big lolita fashion staple. I noticed some bloomer shorts in the collection too which might be a precursor to pumpkin pants, common in ouji or "prince" fashion, a companion to lolita's princess. Her heart-shaped and boston bags have also been very popular accessories in lolita fashion for decades!

I was born in 1971, and was a teen in the 80s. I wanted to be a fashion designer “when I grew up”, and Westwood was and is soooo inspiring and influential. (So was Keith Haring, RIP).
Thank you for doing this video.

I am not a student of fashion, unless you count watching you as my educator, and I do. I own a Harris Tweed sports coat, and frequently heard the name “ Harris Tweed “. Well I asked Siri, and I was thrilled to find out about Scottish history and Hebrides wool fabric. I wish I knew more about this. The point is, although not a fashionista, I was proud that I’d picked out and still wear a quality garment in which I feel sort of “ special “. Love your videos.
