  • Learn how to prevent splitting wood and stripping screw heads. Drilling pilot holes and clearance holes makes it easier to drive wood screws and helps create a strong connection. Use a combination countersink bit to drill both a pilot hole and countersink to recess the head of the screw in the workpiece.

    hello good video love the cross sections big thumbs up :) , may I ask you if you were joining a piece of 18mm birch plywood to the wall (rawplug in to the wall) would you drill a pilot hole or clearance hole through the birch ply? thanks in advance

    • @rockler
      @rockler  4 года назад +1

      If you're wondering which type of hole to drill through the plywood - pilot or clearance - a clearance hole is the better choice for this situation. The wall framing will be receiving the screw threads, and the plywood will be held in place mostly by the screw head. So, the hole in the plywood can be large enough to allow the screw shank to simply slip through the plywood. But, a pilot hole will also work, especially if the shank of the screw is the same diameter from the tip to the screw head (many screw types don't have tapered shanks anymore as they once did). The important thing is, it's better not to just drive the screw through the plywood with no preliminary hole drilled through it--otherwise blowout from the screw might prevent the plywood from pulling tightly against the wall.

    There is a more simpler method for driving screw in hard wood. After making the countersink pilot hole, Just add some grease or soap in the screw thread and it will go and tight inside the wood piece. No need for a clearence hole.

    • @rockler
      @rockler  4 года назад

      Drilling pilot holes for screws is always a good idea-both to make screws easier to drive and to help prevent splitting. Even framing lumber applications like yours here will benefit from drilling pilot holes.

  • @hectorheath9742
    @hectorheath9742 6 лет назад

    Unless there's a length of plain shank under the screw head that 'clears' the top piece I always use a clearance hole, even on softwoods. Otherwise you're not really tightening the work pieces together. Maybe if the work pieces are tightly clamped as you screw it's allowable to ignore the clearance hole. But I've seen many RUclips videos where just a pilot hole has been drilled, or no hole at all. I guess people just don't think how these things work these days. Or just can't be bothered to do the job right.

    What if your drill bits are not going through and getting stuck and breaking?

    • @rockler
      @rockler  Год назад

      Always use sharp drill bits, it may be dull or damaged bits causing your issue. Here are some other tips if that isn't it. Try starting with a pilot hole ( use a smaller drill bit size than the final hole size) and then step up to the final size. Make sure you have a fully charged battery if you are using a cordless drill. Try "peck drilling" where you drill a little bit and then pull back, breaking the chips and letting them evacuate the drill and hole. Hope this helps!

  • @nicholas8479
    @nicholas8479 6 лет назад +1

    If only a pilot hole is used on softwood, won't you still have problems with the two boards not pulling together? Seems like the screw would bite into both boards and prevent the top board from pulling tight against the bottom board. I guess you're assuming the screw threads will strip a clearance hole in the top board because the screw has a longer and therefore stronger bite into the bottom board.

    • @MintStiles
      @MintStiles 5 лет назад +1

      Clamp them before driving, or you can back out a bit when they come apart and then forward again when the hole is large enough for the shank to make the entry. You only need it for the first few.

    • @NatMir2784
      @NatMir2784 5 лет назад +1

      Not that I know anything but I would figure that with the softer wood it is able to grip the wood easy enough and still pinch the boards together. Again I have absolutely no knowledge of wood and am throwing an idea out there.

  • @oneandatwo
    @oneandatwo 3 года назад

    What bits would I use for a 2" screw of these dimensions: 4.5 x 3 ?

    • @rockler
      @rockler  3 года назад

      No matter what screw size you are using, the pilot hole should be roughly the same diameter as the screw’s center shaft (the solid center of the screw, not including the threads). One way to select the correct drill bit to make the pilot hole is to hold the screw directly behind a drill bit that you think is close to the correct size. The drill bit should not completely block you from seeing the screw. It should be narrow enough that you can still see the screw’s threads extending wider than the drill bit. If the drill bit is too large and you can’t see the screw’s threads at all, then select a smaller drill bit.

    Do we need a clearance hole if we are joining two Plywoods?

    • @rockler
      @rockler  4 года назад

      It never hurts to drill a clearance hole for a screw's shank, regardless of whether the screw is being driven into solid wood or plywood. The purpose of the clearance hole is to allow the shank to pass through the material more easily and to reduce friction. The easier it is to drive the screw in, the less chance you have of breaking the screw or stripping the head. So, when it comes to methods for installing screws, treat plywood and solid wood the same way.
