    There’s a guy at the PGA headquarters that is pissed he got beat by someone that “anchored” their putts.

    The only player that's gonna suffer a lot from the change is Adam Scott.

    I'm now changing my mind here - I've used that long putter many times now and am still making the same mistakes I have in the past. It is NOT easier to control, IMO.

    So many will use it-- but this same argument can applied to pretty much anything in sports, from restricting motorcycles from a bike race to banning steroid usage in baseball. This is more about what people decide what they want golf to be like.

    Of course rule additions are always necessary to preserve the traditions of the way the game is played. If not, it would be just a matter of time before technology provided a spring loaded driver or putter that you simply loaded the ball into. Uniform equipment allows everyone to complete equally with skill being the only deciding factor as it should be. While long putters are not banned under this rule change, they are rendered useless by banning their intended technique - same thing.

    I used to anchor my chips. Is that legal

  • @CaneFu
    @CaneFu 11 лет назад

    Sure, an anchored putter is not a guarantee of sinking a put anymore than a scoped rifle guarantees hitting a bulls-eye - but it is still an advantage over traditional equipment.

    I find it funny that they mention enjoyment. So many people switch to these putter strokes because their putting is a source of frustration. Whether that frustration is due to pain i.e. fred couples, or inability. They have allowed it for so long that I feel changing now is detrimental to the game. I love Golf and use a traditional putter, and admittedly putting is my weak point. I have (am) considering switching to a long putter. I do not see any weekend player switching their stroke

    I remain at a loss why it was necessary to put in effect this rule. What unfair advantage did it prohibit? Why folks???
    This video sounds like one of those Soviet era "explanations" of party position changes.

  • @DaaaBall

    It isn't an unfair advantage, anyone has the choice whether to use a belly putter or not

  • @lewisgl
    @lewisgl 11 лет назад

    Actually not rendered useless although it might seem that way.. I have been putting without anchoring for the last few rounds (using 50 inch long putter) and so far am putting a little better without anchoring. Was kind of surprising because, yes anchoring the putter does seem to make the stroke more stable than not anchoring. Since I have a bad case of the yips I pretty much had to go to a Long putter, and even with anchoring it is still easy to miss all kinds of putts, believe it or not.

    what if my thumb holding my putter moves along my belly as I rotate the putter back and through. Its not anchored to one point as it moves as i swing the putter. Is that legal or illegal? My putter is a long putter about 42 inches long. Way to go USGA for making the rules more confusing.

    There is no use of additional equipment or a change to the equipment that makes it better. This is just simple a stroke technique. If this is cheating then when I turn my club to a different angle so I don't have to turn my wrist as much should be a cheat. How is this a cheat but using a Callaway HX Diablo for longer drives or a TaylorMade Penta TP3 for better accuracy is not.
    They are only banning this because it looks funky and somebody got uppity that they lost because they aren't using it.

  • @lewisgl
    @lewisgl 11 лет назад

    I have to disagree with the cheating thing. It will be cheating as of 2016 or whenever the rule goes into effect. An anchored stroke is a stroke actually, but a stroke with an anchor point. To some people this is a clear cut issue, but it isn't. If it was a clear cut issue than it wouldn't have taken the USGA 40 years to figure out that anchoring is illegal. Is there a "definition" of a stroke somewhere in the rule that even addressed "anchoring" until now?

    If your golf ball was on the edge of a hole is it legal to try to blow it into the hole or jump up and down near it to try and make it fall in?

  • @metalman343
    @metalman343 11 лет назад

    completely agree with you. once you affix one of the ends of pendulum, technically it is no longer a free stroke as physics would say. which clearly means unfair advantage as it completely takes out a possible layer of human error

  • @jeffgirdlestone9380
    @jeffgirdlestone9380 11 лет назад +1

    I understand the rule change/explanation regarding anchoring and a 'stroke, etc'
    I use a belly putter and find it much easier to control. So ..I get the proposed change.
    BUT - I agree with NYgolfer - TOTALLY. I don't like these rules 'Officials' HIDING behind the 'maintaining tradition, etc.' If that were true, we'd still be using hickory shafts and goose-feather balls - how many courses would still be their original length? Just tell us you screwed up when this rule was 'allowed.'

  • @TheScenicView

    How is something an unfair advantage to somebody when anyone can do it. It's like banning shooting a foul shot in basketball granny style if all of a sudden a few players started having tremendous success doing it. The whole thing is silly. some traditionalists getting their panties in a wad over a new way of doing things that they don't like. The USGA are basically the parents in Footloose.

  • @axo9

  • @AJLovesMC12
    @AJLovesMC12 11 лет назад +2

    Anchoring the club does give an advantage. It takes away any error that occurs during the swing, which creates a pure stroke every time. That sounds like cheating to me! Why would someone use the long putter in the first place? Most people at a young age use a conventional putter, and if you suck too bad. Golf is a challenge, and anchoring the putter removes that challenge.

    How many elite putters (past or present) use/d an anchored putter ?
    Answer: ZERO
    How many of the current(as of this post) top ten putters on the PGA tour use an anchored putter?
    Answer:ZERO
    So my suggestion to the USGA is simple. Educate yourselves and look at the stats BEFORE you cave in to pressures from an influential minority (Woods,Palmer,Watson Etc). If you REALLY want to make the game more "traditional and challenging" limit drivers to 150CC instead of the bucket sized 460CC's of today

    Say I am a great putter with a traditional stroke and using an anchored stroke would give me no improvement in my putting. However, you are a bad putter with a traditional stroke but anchoring allows you to be competitive with me where previously you were not. Are you not getting a competitive advantage by using an anchored stroke?
    Isn't it possible that the anchored stroke allows players who cannot putt with a traditional stroke a means of being competitive beyond their actual abilities?
