Suffered with the yips on short putts for many years and have tried everything including armlock and wristlock. I always end up going back to the saw/claw style. I always thought reverse claw was right hand on top and left hand below the right but in a claw style (for a right handed golfer) and didn't realise the Tommy Fleetwood grip is the reverse claw.
Been using the reverse grip for about 5 years. As Rick says it does feel different when you start using it, but I would recommend it if you’re struggling.
I recently re-gripped my old Odyssey Two ball putter with an Odyssey jumbo grip and have instinctively moved to the prayer grip which is working really well. I much prefer the feel of it over the standard grip
I got the same club but never tried anyother club. costs £300 though! And I seem to be hitting the cup every time surprisingly but then again I am 6ft 5"
What’s the prayer grip like on long putts? It looks like it would be accurate for short putts but I kinda feel that it wouldn’t be as good to get enough power for the ball to reach a 60 foot putt with any accuracy or relative proximity. Thoughts?
Great timing Rick! I just switched to the prayer grip from standard. Like you mentioned, it keeps the shoulders level, and I feel like the putter swings more freely. I've been delivering more energy to the ball with less effort, which is great because I tend to leave putts short. I was starting to get very mechanical and technical. Prayer grip just lets me roll it!
Hey Rick. I came across your channel a few weeks ago since I recently started playing and I have to say, I really enjoy your videos. Everything that I have learned from just watching is so valuable and I just wanted to say thank you! Best golf channel right here🔥
It would be great to see a review on different grip styles, different thicknesses and weights etc and how they effect the performance of a putter. Particularly jumbo, flatso, traditional etc
It's crazy, I have watched several of your videos and each one has really helped me. Been playing for 3 years now and tried Reverse Standard Grip and it feels so natural! Thank you!
Reverse Claw Grip. When I first got into Golf a little more seriously, I was constantly watching Fleetwood because of his Iron game. I noticed the unorthodox putting grip and tried it out for a season. I noticed that I have a lot more control and I'm sinking so many more putts now using this grip style and haven't looked back since.
Recently had a SuperStroke Traxion Tour 5.0 grip put on my TaylorMade Spider putter. Honestly the best £30 I’ve spent on my golf game! Having more contact with the putter handle on my right palm has drastically improved my stroke stability
Never changed the actual putting technique BUT as I was struggling with my putting I changed the actual PUTTER a lot then I discovered the fat grips and it drastically improved my putting, very very rarely 3 putt now, total game changer 👍
Thank you Rick! Never seen a video go through so many different types of putting grips all in one video. I could try all of them one after the other. I'm with you, the prayer grip feel week in the hands but i can feel nothing working independently. The two versions of the claw were great as well. I was doing one wrong until I watched your video. Much better now. Cheers
ahhhh thank you for this video. I struggle [a lot] with putting (3-putts!!!). i use standard grip right now and have trouble keeping it level. will be trying some of these!
Hey Rick i've just got back in to playing after the better part of a decade away from the game and i am finding that the claw grip is giving me greater control with my putter and less twisting of the putter face. Thanks for all the great content
I've just taken up golf for 1st time at 45 years old been told about you you tube channel watched alot of your videos find them very informative thanks
I started using this new grip I made up this year and it’s a game changer. #8 the two finger RH. Place your left hand middle finger on one side of the grip, ring finger on the right side of the grip. Your two fingers look like a claw. Wrap right hand around your left with your two left fingers gripping the front and back of the grip below your right hand. Small pencil grip works best. I can freaking feel everything. It’s amazing for short medium range putts.
I have had a very unconventional putting grip for almost 20 years now. Its pretty close to the traditional putter grip but with my right-hand I run the grip through my index finger and middle finger. Then i curl my index finger on my right-hand on the top of my grip to cause the flat of the grip to match with the flat of my index finger. It helped me a lot with keeping the face square through contact.
i started with standard grip and noticed you use the claw grip in a lot of your videos so i tried it out the other day and made some of the best putts of my life. thanks coach rick
Love the video. I am a standard grip but like you have tried most over 40 years. Where I end up tinkering and causing issues is stance. I was taught the Nicklaus open stance but at times I get a push to the right going. Thoughts on stance for putting would be interesting. Sorry if off topic or you covered before. Cheers from Tampa!
I used to be a standard gripper but I couldn’t sink anything, not even 2 footers, too flicky. Changed to trying the claw grip that actually worked into a reverse claw grip. Which is the exact grip I’ve been using for the last year, I love it. A lot more stable and control within close proximity of the hole, holds its line for me very well, anything long I go back to standard grip to get it close for a two put. Reverse claw is what works for me! ☺️
Rick, great video. I plan to try one of the variations you show tomorrow. For years I have been plagued by pulling my putts left. Any suggestions on what causes that?
I m new to the game and I spend most my time fatting the irons and slicing me woods. But I do seem to be but more natural with putting I seem to read the greens quite well. But tbh I have no.idea how to hold the putter so this video is so useful for me . Cheers Rick
I actually use the same grip I use with all of my clubs. I am 67 years young and have been golfing since my early teens. I use the old style Moe Norman base ball grip, I have exceptional large hands and it works well for me. Cheers Bob McCabe
Only today was I look at changing my grip came across one called Pjm Kotahi. It’s moves you into palms up position. Might start seeing how they go? Or maybe I could wait and see how you go with one. Cheers for top content, keep it coming.
I experimented with the reverse grip which initially I liked but over time I realised my putting scores were getting worse and worse. Bought a chipper which I love, and was using standard grip with that. Now I've switched back to standard grip for my putter as well and my putting scores have got much better. Will stick with standard for now - oh, and with my index finger on my RH down the side for a little more stability.
I use basically a standard grip with both forefingers running down the handle. Very stable, good for both long and short puts and I find it very easy to control. I also have a large grip as then all my fingers are on the handle and not overlapped on my hands which I found reduces stability.
I refer to the reverse claw as the pencil claw grip, because I feel like if I replaced the putter with a fat pencil, I'd be able to steadily write even without wrapping my fingers all the way around. It restocked my confidence putting to the point where I can go back to the original standard grip but keep the stability in my stroked that i gained from using the pencil claw grip.
Was struggling with speed control with a thin putter grip and standard hand grip. Played today with a SuperStroke Zenergy Tour and prayer grip. No 3 puts and sunk a few birdies. Tomorrow it will fall apart but it felt good today for $30!
Traditional grip. Ping anser 2 Putter. Ive tried a few bigger grips and newer putters but I think the classic that has worked for decades still works for me. A lot of people just over complicate putting.
Another great video Rick. Question for you. Are there any pros that use different grips on the same hole? You have said some are better for long putt. And some for short.
Great video Rick I’ve had the traditional style grip for a long time, recently I’ve been experimenting with a right hand low, with very little grip on the putter, has been working fantastically.
never had a putting lesson so wouldn't know which one feels best. With our different hand shapes, I'd be intrigued to find out. thanks for the video Rick.
Awesome tutorial, I use the standard grip! It feels natural. I’ve never tried other grips! Probably worth a reassessment to improve my short game. Thanks for the advice Rick!
great video guys, love all your content but as a new golfer only been playing in the last 12 months your coaching videos are my favourite. cheers think i will have to try every putting grip now😂
Started standard, felt twitchy. Went to claw and loved it but didn't feel good on the longer putts as Rick mentioned. Now I'm left hand low and liking it. I might start to incorporate the claw grip to my shorter putts
I use the reverse grip. Took about a year to get my feel for distance back from standard. I will never go back, it's made me much more confident over puts. 8 hcp, digger.
I have been using the reverse claw with good results on putts from 10 feet to the hole for a year now. For longer putt’s the ball seems to come up short of the hole by 2 - 3 feet but am still able to sink the putt because I feel very comfortable using the reverse claw.
Hi Rick...when buying a new putter grip, should you buy a lighter grip (60+gms) to feel the putter head, or a heavier grip (120+gms) to lighten the head feel? I'd like to see a segment on choosing a new putter grip and what to look for...straight, pistol, thick, thin...etc. What do you think of the 2Thumbs brand? Thanks!
Standard for me. I tried the claw grip earlier in the season but as you said I found I was struggling with long putts. Maybe I should use standard for the long putts, then try the claw on short putts
I have a fairly long 36" putter, it's a Wilson with the stock grip (kind of a fat cone with a flat front) and it's perfect for me. I choke down to the bottom of the grip with my left hand and position the rest of the grip against my left forearm. Right hand goes below left, actually on the metal shaft, but it's only there to guide my shoulders and chest. All the aiming and stability is in the left hand and arm. Changed my game big time
I’m currently using the claw. Definitely tried them all except the broom. My sons and I were having this conversation on the course this past weekend. My youngest was trying the prayer grip. Great video
Hey there Mr Rick... I know it's a slim chance u read this but I just wanted to thank you for your videos... You got me back into playing after offer 18 years .. you really saved a life
Rick, enjoyed the putting grip review. I have one more for you to look up and review: Paul Runyon. A short hitter, Paul developed his short game, including putting, to a high enough level that he was able to win 29 PGA tournaments including two PGA Championships. As best as I can describe it, it is the standard grip with the palms rolled under. It was his feeling that rolling the palms of both hands under the club took wrist flex out of the putting stroke.
You should have thrown in the side saddle putting technique. I’ve tried it before and although I don’t use it regularly, it was great on the short to medium puts!!
I try to keep my grip as simple as possible; no claw shenanigans, left hand on the top, right hand sliding up from below, barely overlapping. Straight back, straight through, hitting on the up stroke. BTW: Have you tried the Honma TW-S ball? I can’t seem to find a review on that one.
I use a claw-type grip, but with my right hand on top as a right handed golfer. distance control is great, but on short putts i struggle. I might try the normal claw or the Fleetwood-claw for a change
I normally use the standard putting grip, I might try the one that Tommy Fleetwood uses. I have tried that before and it has worked, might give that one a go
Love your videos man, I just picked up golfing again after winning a captains choice tournament this past weekend. I been watching your videos religiously and had to subscribe lol. I also watched videos on your cobra reviews bc that’s what I’ve always used and I plan to snag a set of the cobra king tour irons this Friday, can’t wait to replace my 10 year old S3 max’s
IU standard and I also provide for an 18 degrees of angle between the ball and my backstroke which makes judging the direction of the ball a little bit easier
Hi Rick. What are your thoughts on the DQ of Hideki Matsuyama in the Memorial Tournament? Also, what would be the benefits of adding white paint to thw face of his 3-wood?
My style over the years has migrated to a modified standard grip with both thumbs on the front flat of the grip and both index fingers down the sides of the grip. It’s odd I’m sure (I’ve never seen anyone else putt like this) but it feels the most comfortable and stable to me. I’ve always used a center shafted putter because my stroke is more pendulum style, straight back and straight forward. I have 2 putters, a Taylormade Spider Tour Red and a Ben Hogan by Bettinardi BHB12 HK (The Hawk). Both are fitted with the Taylormade branded Super Stroke PistolGTR 1.0 grip.
Hi Rick....your videos Rock....just a question .......what are your feelings on training aids orange whip....LagShot .....or is money better spent on lessons by Pros like you???
Currently using the prayer grip but with trail hand slightly lower so the tip of my lead thumb sits the same height as my trail hand thumb joint... Then I extend my index fingers down the grip...seems to help me keep the clubhead square...
I use the claw grip but what I find helps me is on my left hand I let me left index finger lie straight down on the left edge of the putter. I find it gives me a ton of control. And I use it for long putts too, I seem to have great distance control
I found the reverse grip to drastically improve my line. When I put it through the ringer, I noticed I was dropping even more putts than I typically do from 8 feet in. However I found once I got outside of say 12-15 feet that my lag putting dropped off substantially. And maybe it’s one of those things where practice will help establish pace, but I found my ability to two putt dropped off significantly
I'm using the standard-ish grip, but I started to have my left index finger straight a few years ago (right handed). I feel it kind of gives me feedback that I'm not flicking my wrists.
When I had a Ping Anser, I used the standard grip but since I got my Scottt Cameron, which has a much thinner grip, I started using the pencil grip lol.
I tried out a new grip a couple of years ago that works well for me. I would say it's a variation of the claw grip perhaps. Holding the club normally with my left hand (I'm right handed), I then grip the bottom of my super stroke grip almost like holding a gun. With my pointer finger wrapped around the bottom edge of the grip. It keeps both of my arms straight and my hands quiet.
What putting grip style do you use?
My Odyssey Tank Versa came with a long grip. Split hand grip. Left hand at the top, right hand at the bottom of the grip. Stopped the putting yips.
The same one that got me there. Why change?
Standard ... feels the best for me and I've had the most success with it
Trying out the standard with a wrist lock grip. So far so good. Good compromise
I lie down and use the butt of the grip as a snooker queue. So much better than actual putting. Next level.
Just keep a pool cue in the bag🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@daveystreb9042 I'm a game changer not a rule breaker!

I just started the claw this year and I really like it. I've holed a lot of 5-10 foot puts that I normally would miss.
My playing partner did this too and he used to miss 80% of 5 footers and now holes circa 80% of 5 footers. Definitely worth considering
@@martinhamilton9378 it’s especially helped me in the 3ft - just out of a gimme range. I almost never miss those lately 🤞it continues lol

I use reverse with index fingers out. I have found it gives me much better control with the face, as well as my swing path
I putt Cackhanded as I think it stops me from pulling it as much, will be interesting to watch the video!
Grip No1 has changed my game, noticed Lee Westwood puts the index finger down the shaft, it's brilliant, I've turned 3 puts into 1 & 2's.

Broom handle with a standard length putter works miracles for me. allowed me to engage the muscles in my top arm more for better stability.
This is me exactly! So I’ve been doing reverse grip in short putts and regular on anything longer than 6 ft or so.
How do, I've just watched a few, well a lot !! of videos on Eye Dominance when putting.
Do you make any adjustments yourself?
Regards Slonch
Let me know if im wrong. but did you use the claw grip in the Good Good Major UK vid? Is that what you are using still
Thanks for all these videos Rick🤘
Interesting video Rick, never knew there was seven versions of gripping a putter? I use the standard grip..
I'm using the standard-ish grip, but I started to have my left index finger straight a few years ago (right handed). I feel it kind of gives me feedback that I'm not flicking my wrists.
Best content on RUclips by far!! Thanks so much 👌
Switched to left hand low a few years ago love it.
Gonna try the prayer grip. Seems like the most intuitive/less offensive opinion from the standard.
