Jeremy, you should absolutely do a full tour of Austin BBQ. Whether or not you want to judge the restaurants against each other is up to you, but from what I've seen there isn't any other region where BBQ experimentation is currently concentrated, and at such a high level of cooking. I haven't seen that documented in any one place. Leroy & Lewis, Valentina's, and La Barbecue are good examples: each of them have gained a reputation beyond Texas, but they're each known for completely different products while cooking in the same style. Appreciate your content man.
Totally love this tour. I've been to both and agree with your findings. I'd eat at both in a heartbeat!
I first went to La Barbecue in 2015. It's the one place I want to return to every time I am in Austin. Love the Austin tour videos. We'll miss you here in California.
I went to LA BBQ while I was in Austin and was really impressed it was great, dare I say better than the other place I went! Hats off to you two ladies!
Thank you for the wonderful video, lots of information. I visited La Barbecue 4 years ago, it was good.
Wow. That looked like an awesome beef rib. I guess I’ll be adding another stop on my dream BBQ trip to Austin. 😁
La Barbecue was the first Central TX BBQ experience I had. My brother was with me, and they were still just operating out of a small food truck at the time back in 2014. I was hooked to barbecue after that first bite. They are my favorite spot in Austin to this day.
Love these videos! I’m planning a central Texas bbq crawl for my 30th birthday next year, so more videos on how to plan it, and which staples to include would be awesome!
I know this is a bit late, but as a local Austinite Salt Lick, La BBQ (of course), Franklin’s, Coopers old time ( the one in Plano is worth the wait), and Black’s BBQ are just some of the very important staples.
What an awesome video, I ate there 2 years ago and was blown away. I was upset because I got up late and didn't make Franklin in time to get a decent spot in line. Great to know that La Barbeque is one of the best and I at least got to try it!... Thanks alot for the video, would totally love to see more... I would actually Love to go with you to eat!!!... If you ever decide to come east for the Brooklyn tour, I can get you around!
Marty Robbins in the background., I'm sold.
Place is smacking... best bbq place I've ever had
I've lived in Austin since 2009 and eating there was still one of the best meals I've ever had. Insanely good and a must stop when in Austin.
Maybe you have never been to Memphis
@@CosmicStargoat lol memphis is the furthest thing from real bbq
Lived in Austin when the places to go were Stubbs, the Salt Lick and the County Line if you wanted a more standard restaurant experience. Lot of great places have opened there since. But we still buy Stubb sauces.
Agree with your comment. I've been in Austin since 1977, and The County Line and Salt Lick were the places to go. While they are still really good, there are probably 15-20 places that have opened up since then that are phenomenal.
Miss having your pop ups in the LA area Jeremy. I was in Austin in February and I took Franklin “to go”(went to a local park a few blocks away) to avoid the line and also ate at LA Barbecue. Franklin #1 and LA Barbecue was #2. I tried to make it to Terry Blacks and Valentinas but ran out of time. Next time. 😊
I had it in 2013 and 2017 and in 2013 John Lewis was the pit master at the time and was in the trailer parking lot location. And THAT was amazing bbq. In 2017 at their brick n’ mortar building didn’t have the same feeling or taste to me.
Blue door smokehouse in Lexington. Awesome Texas style brisket. Hope you can review it.
La Barbecue was my favorite stop in Texas and that beef rib is insane. Now that they have they restaurant, I wonder if they are still doing line-beer, which was perfect while you waited.
Agreed, La Barbecue does everything well. Louie Mueller is still the best beef rib I’ve ever had. Stiles Switch is a newer place that has been blowing up. Their line has been steadily getting longer over the last few years. Of course you need to checkout Coopers in llano for some old time Texas barbecue. My wife and I go to coopers monthly, and yes we drive all the way to llano because the austin location just doesn’t taste the same to us. Not quite sure what causes this.
La bbq is truly the best brisket. The only place on par ive had was red birds in port niches.
I loved LaBarbecue. It's a must try if you're going to Austin.
You need to post more of your Austin tour videos!
Very nice, thanks.
Nice place to tour
Can you do a review of Kerlin bbq and insteller bbq in Austin?
I will be going to be an hr away from Austin in Oct. Can you put together the top 5 spots. I'm going to try and see the Alamo and have lunch.
Keep touring Austin, I would like to get your opinion on some of the top BBQ places in Austin.
This is my favorite BBQ in Austin, just get a beef rib, brisket, and beer and be happy.
How would you compare it to Franklins? Would you choose one over the other?
I know you made a video on Franklin last year, but just curious as which Brisket you liked better. Not sure if you went to one before the other. Both are phenomenal. I prefer the brisket and ribs at Franklin. Pies great too. However, everything else, La Barbecue takes it.
this makes me want to take a trip to austin...
LA bbq is the Jam
Kinda want to know what place they were talking about lol
Nice!!
I was born in Austin and these people are very authentic Austin locals
I wanna go
now I want the VIP cuts of meats!
I'm an hour north of Austin and still haven't been to them all.. DOH!!
is it because your too drunk to drive most of the time? haha
Hey what kind of pit do you have and who made it?
Please make more bbq reviews like the one of that famous chef
I wanna try this place! Is this similar to Franklyn's where you have to get up very early in the morning to get in line?
No. I've been there a few times around 11:30 in the middle of the week and have only had to wait about 30 minutes. The BBQ is definitely everything it's cracked up to be in this video.
Scared to death...entering my very first competition (small) in October! What kind advice can I get from you?
Go watch every video Harry Soo has put out. He's probably the best BBQ competition guy on youtube, by a wide margin.
I've had that Mickelthwait vs La BBQ conversation so many times living right by them. Love both, but 100% agree La BBQ pushes out consistently better brisket and beef rib. I'm still happy to eat at either, and the whole package at Mickelthewait is great.
La BBQ IMO is severely under-rated relatively to Franklin, given how easy it is to get. Sometimes, I think I even like it better...
In your humble opinion, who's brisket was better? Franklin's or la barbcue?
As a tourist and as a bbq lover, if i wanna plan a trip in texas, can you tell me guys some places to eat ?
preferably i dont want to quque or reservation ecc
Look at the comment right above this one. It's a good place to start. Or drive to Lockhart and take your pick of any of the places there and then there;s Snow's in Lexington but they're only open on Saturday and open at 8:00am so if you get there at noon they'll probably be sold out. Right now though Snow's is still closed because of the pandemic so call ahead of that drive.
what watch are you wearing man? looks as gorgeous as the bbq!
Where can I get a brisket shirt like that
Why didn’t you go to Snows?
Let me know when you're getting rid of some smokers you don't like so I can master them lol
Wait. Do you like this better than Franklin?
Hey brother be careful out there tonight!
Are you getting fired back up after your relocation? (No pun intended)
have u watched Netflix's "Chefs Table:BBQ.The 1st and 2nd episodes are fantastic Tootsie(roadtrip?)and the fire chef from Austrailia
Great show!
I thought they were all great, but the last episode was my least favorite. I actually think the Rodney Scott episode was my favorite one
I need that Brisket shirt he is wearing . . . . where can one find that shirt?
Foundry Barbecue
Okay Jeremy, if you could pick up BBQ from each and every place that was the best of, beef ribs where? Brisket where? Pork ribs where, pulled pork? Sides? Your dream combo platter, where is each item from? Please, I am going next year my step son just moved there.
Well, first you need to leave the State of Texas.
Was the one you left out baby blues?
But no pokejos? We've been serving Austin since 1979
Family owned
It's some good bbq too💯
Franklin's favorite bbq (besides his own) is Valentina's Tex Mex BBQ in south Austin, thank me later.
I'm from Austin and yeah, Valentina's is fast becoming a not so well kept secret. Probably my favorite too. I've met Aaron and he's an incredibly nice guy but I've still never forced myself to wait in that long ass line! I've eaten his food though and it's every bit as good as folks say that it is.
@@texasplumr We live in New Braunfels and haven't been to either one yet but you're right, Valentina's is on everyone's radar now. Both places are on our bucket list of BBQ places to try one day but waiting in that line doesn't excite me....
Hey where can I get that Brisket shirt fat stack man is wearing?
What's the hair situation with the left one?
I didn't want to be the first to point this out, but this begs for a major Go-Fund-Me for that poor gal. I'd hate to see the industrial fan she stuck her head in.
Austin is filled with eccentrics out of the box thinkers , some would say weirdos .. that is what makes Austin , Austin .That's what makes people in Austin so different let alone Texas .. our weirdness makes us special ........u dummies
Loved the video, so thanks very much. Really would love to see more on the food but at the same time want to hear more from the pitmasters/owners. Would be great to see more focus on the food as in closeups on each type of food so can get an idea on what it is looking like.
There better not be any raisins in that potato salad!
I could not agree more. Unacceptable!
What about Aaron Franklin BBQ
GIVE ME YOUR THOUGHTS
He made a video maybe last year about it!
ruclips.net/video/h-QQA6fUws8/видео.html
Good BBQ in Texas is very hard to find, so that is why Texans line up for hours to eat at Franklins.
I've not been to La Barbecue, but I haven't been too interested in going to BBQ restaurants since I'm smoking every other week.
I live in Colorado now, from Memphis, so this was a cultural shock. Needless to say, I smoke my own BBQ, as there is none in Colorado
@@CosmicStargoat So true and so sad. All of the best BBQ in Colorado is smoked in someone's backyard. And none of the people I smoke with have any interest in trying to open a restaurant. But the ones I've tried I've been so disappointed with. If someone has any real desire to put in the work, Colorado is ripe with passion for some good smoke!
@@MileHighGrowler If I were younger and more motivated, I think I would like to open a food truck. I would keep it very simple.
You run into Rogan yet?
Hey sir
I guess it's about personal taste. Some say there while others swear it's Franklin's and some Blacks bbq
I love BBQ, but I'm not waiting in Franklins line, lol.
@@yourface3154 They almost all have long lines now, TBH.
I am having trouble buying dino ribs. Any suggestions?
I order them from Stutzman meats. www.stutzmanmeats.com/product-page/wagyu-short-ribs
@@METRIKVX And even then, most butchers won't cut them here in California. As a matter of fact, because of the bad climate for business, it is nearly impossible to find a butcher. So it goes.
@@MadScientistBBQ Thank you. Another source. I appreciate it. Great videos. Thanks.
Beef ribs, good ones that is, are almost impossible to find at your traditional grocery. They are always almost all bone and membrane, leaving you with no much to work with.
19:06 Hook 'Em 🤘🏼
If I remember right the man was a pitmaster for Aaron Franklins and took the knowledge with them
Incorrect. That is Maurio Chiefari aka Max from Texicana BBQ.
John Lewis went from Franklin to La BBQ and now has his own place in Charleston SC. I went to La BBQ during the transition after Lewis and they were still outstanding. I’ve been to John’s place in Charleston and he’s still great.
So La Barbecue is better than Franklin’s??
RIP Leann Mueller
hey bro I'm a local Austinite and I'll let you know that the best barbeque is not actually in Austin! the best is in lockhart! the best barbeque is Smitty's and their sausage is different from anything else. my family has gone to Smitty's for like 4 generations so it's the real deal. if you want REAL Texas barbeque, go to Smitty's
I'am just gonna be incredible rude.. But a hairdresser cant be THAT expensive in the US right? Damn
People in Texas are weird , there is something that goes on that is different , u can't explain it ,it just is what it is......Texas is just different, when it comes to Central Texas Bbq,Texas Blues Stevie Ray Vaughan,Jimmy Vaughan ,Mex Tex Fajitas, Barbacoa , with Selena , Tejano Music ,Texas is it's own thing in it's itself let alone stop by and drink the local beer
"If there's no paperwork for it, it must be illegal." Maybe we should stop asking, "Who will let me?" and instead ask, "Who will stop me?" How did we survive before bureaucrats?
La Barbecue has become La rip off Barbecue! I have lived in Austin Texas 40+ years and I know the real deal about BBQ here! La Barbecue and Franklin's are for the tourist. Terry blacks is way better then both of them. If you want the real good TX BBQ. Then you need to be going to Opie's BBQ in Spicewood. I moved here long before offsets were a thing. They came in in th 80's. Back then they used brick pits and the BBQ was way better. Opie was trained by Copper before he died in a car crash in the late 70's. Copper's was by far the best BBQ in the state of Texas back then. They have changed. But they are still pretty good. Opie's and Snow's are still the best in the State by far.
Thumbs up for leaving out the name of the other place cuz the guys a total Douche Bag lol You know that I know who it is just by that alone 😂 nice watch by the way is that a Rolex 😉
Ps Also gotta love Joel as the backup camera guy haha
I met him and he was really nice
Well Mr Jeremy I've asked you this question on Twitter and on RUclips to no reply where can you buy the gravity-fed smoker this is the last time 3 days to respond or I will delete your Channel because of lack of Interest in the host
woody pilgrim that’s the question I asked and posted on that video. I’ve looked all over and I have come up empty.
Probably custom made
✌️
As far as BBQ goes, the best thing about Texas are the 10 major interstates that take you AWAY from the State. If you crave BBQ, take I-40 to Memphis.
Hahaha, how laughable. Memphis BBQ... Hahaha! Over Central Texas BBQ (or any Texas BBQ for that matter).. No thanks.
@@airforceeli Spoken as someone who fears and loathes something he has never experienced, or does not understand. You obviously have never been outside your borders.
@@CosmicStargoat not the case at all.. I've traveled the nation extensively (every 2nd week in a different city for work). Born in Texas, lived in Los Angeles, Indianapolis & Oklahoma City.
BBQ is my favorite food, so I eat it everywhere that claims to be "the best". I judge bbq by how good the brisket and beef ribs are.. Never had brisket outside of Texas that held a candle to the best spots in Texas. Pulled pork isn't my thing, and as I mentioned I prefer beef ribs to pork ribs, so i find that for my taste many states are specializing in the wrong meat. Also, I am not a believer in needing to sauce bbq. So at least memphis gets that kind of right.
But ive been to 2 or 3 spots in memphis that were supposed to be "really good", where do you recommend the next time I am in town? What should I order? Who has respectable brisket?
@@airforceeli Well, all right then. I take most of this from the partial satire article I wrote a few years ago. www.ruthlessreviews.com/29233/the-abcs-of-bbq-smoking-the-meat-edition/
There is no BBQ in Texas. BBQ is _always_ pork, never beef. For some reason, the majority of TV food channels and news publications like to include Texas in discussions about BBQ. For the life of me, I don’t know why. As you know, all Texans are pushy, self-important and obnoxious pinheads, and I guess that extends to their hallucinations about knowing how to do BBQ as well. There are a few, isolated places in Texas, like Franklin’s BBQ in Austin Texas, that make fabulous pulled pork BBQ and probably the best brisket around, but as a rule, Texans are as clueless about BBQ as they are about civil rights. Texans will stand in line for hours, and without their guns, to just get a chance to buy BBQ and brisket at Franklin’s. It’s no wonder as good BBQ is scarce in the Lone Star State.
Smoked brisket can be delicious, but is smoked meat, not BBQ. The BBQ mecca of the world is in Memphis. Texans need to learn this if they are ever to improve.
From www.ruthlessreviews.com/29233/the-abcs-of-bbq-smoking-the-meat-edition/
BBQ is any meat you cook over a fire........ you sick pig.
@@kenbaustin4533 Ah, Texas is heard from So, by your flawed logic, a turkey hot dog on a coat-hanger over a campfire is BBQ. Typical Texas stupidity.
Rude staff and over priced! Plus the meat was fatty. To top it off, its a slum of an area with homless shooting up and throwing bricks at moving cars.
