Texan here, I've had coral, rattle, copper head and cotton mouth snakes, coyotes and feral hogs. That said, I do live in a rural area. Scorpions and many types of spiders as well. It helps a lot when you learn what bugs and animals live in your area so you can identify it and know what you're dealing with, most of the time, the animals see you and want to get away.

Yeah. I’ve seen them all but not in my backyard. I jumped down a drainage culvert to look at some newborn puppies and almost landed on a 3 ft. rattlesnake at church camp when I was 16. Had to warn my friend who was about to jump and would have had nowhere to land except on the snake. Cottonmouths while fishing a rice plantation, scorpions at church camps. Feral hogs like crazy all around Louisiana. My brother had a deal with a farmer to hunt his land if he helped clear out the hogs. They got so many, they ran out of people to give them to and didn’t have a food bank near him that would take them.

We get coyotes in our yard about once a week (this morning had one) and I hate them as I feed feral cats, but I'd rather have coyotes than spiders!!! yikes! An adult deer tick, about the size of a pinhead, can cause several infectious diseases, including Lyme disease, babesiosis, and ehrlichiosis. Any of these can be debilitating and even fatal. Rabbits, mice, dogs, squirrels, chipmunks, and birds can all carry deer ticks since they inhabit the same places.

At the local elementary school a few years back the kids were let out for recess. The teachers started to notice some of the kids gathering around a big oak tree in the middle of the playground, when they asked the kids what they were looking at, they said it was a big kitty. When one of the staff realized it was a mountain lion up in the tree, they quickly called all the kids inside. Her husband rescued her but she had a broken pelvis, 12 broken ribs, punctured lung, leg and ankle injuries. She survived but is still recovering. I’ve only seen coyotes in our neighborhood but got pictures of a bobcat across the street. We do have mountain lions in our area and I never want to see one. Pepper spray designed for bears is more effective than a gun. The chances of missing the bear when adrenaline is pumping and possibly hitting the person being attacked is a big risk. It can also take several shots before the bear dies. Bear spray sends out a wide cloud of pepper spray that has greater chance of hitting the bear and is normally enough to scare the bear away even when it is attacking. We just had a guy attacked recently so quickly that he couldn't deploy his bear spray that was in his hand. He was knocked to the ground and covered his head with his hands. The bear bit his head, puncturing the can of bear spray, and it ran off. Having both a gun and bear spray is the best case scenario in an attack.

Gators don't hibernate, they will be seen all winter long along the shores and banks sunning themselves to warm up. They are just as dangerous then as spring, summer, and fall. When the temps drop to low they will go into suspended animation, but as soon as it warms up they go about business as usual. In most of florida and along the coasts of the gulf and atlantic, those regions rarely get that cold for more than a couple days a year.

I was surprised at just how loud the rattle of snakes can be. Had one just hanging out by the front porch one day. A friend that had come over to visit tried to chase it off by poking at it with the handle of a rake. That was the first and last time I ever heard one rattle although I have seen them around quite a bit.
The dog usually alerts me when snakes are near. I recognize his snake warning bark over his other barks now. Earlier today doing some yard work, he spotted one. It was a good time for a break anyway.😆 If you just let them be, they move on. When they get too close to the house, the dog's incessant barking gets them more wary of moving along because they are watching out for him instead. I appreciate him looking out, but...

I recently moved to Florida, so now I'm near bears, wild boars, and alligators. I hope to never see any of those in my yard! Growing up on a farm, cows can be very dangerous and unpredictable. I lived in a small town in Texas several years ago. I woke up one foggy morning, looked out my back door, and saw several large, dark shapes in the fog. The neighbor's cows had gotten out and were just slowly grazing through the town. In a bit, here came the owners on horses rounding them back up.
Same small town, we had a whole nest of baby cottonmouth snakes in our yard. We like snakes, but we had small kids, so my husband had to dispose of them.

When I was a kid, my family was living in Alamogordo, New Mexico for a couple of years due to my dad's job contract. It was a beautiful area with a terrific high desert climate. We lived in an adobe ranch-style home close to the foothills of the mountain range behind our house. The mountains did get snow occasionally during the winter, and one time, after the mountains were covered in snow, I was taking out the trash. The large trash bins were located in the alleyway behind the houses and accommodated several homes, so they were the bigger, commercial-sized trash bins. For some reason, a golden-colored dog managed to climb into one of the trash bins. I threw my trash into an adjacent bin and then called to the dog because I was concerned that he was stuck inside it. The dog promptly growled and roared at me! I quickly realized it was a cougar! Man, I ran the fastest I had ever run to get back into the house! I benefited from the experience because my parents stopped making me take out the trash, LOL! The mountain snow had probably driven the cougar down into the foothills to search for food. 😬

Scariest and maybe deadliest in my backyard when I was living in California was definitely coyetes, rattle snakes, black widows and mountain lions. Had a black widow crawl on my leg at the public pool when I was a child. Our childhood best friend had two of her poor little dogs snatched out of the backyard by coyotes. Ran into so many rattle snakes on hikes around the desert as a kid, and even had one crawling up the side of our house. Our neighbor came running, grabbed it and flung it onto the road without being bitten, literally the craziest and bravest man ever. Went on several hikes in the mountains near our suburbs to look for cool rocks and fossils, and we saw a mountain lion far in the distance watching us and our family dog.
Swimming in the ocean was very interesting too. When I was 5, I was boogie boarding near the pier of Santa Monica, and I got stung by a jellyfish. I came running out and started tripping over random people’s towels, crying from the pain. A lifeguard eventually scooped me up, took me to their shack and stuck my foot in a bucket of vinegar. I still have a scar on my pinky toe!
I also do remember swimming out there in the water, and feeling something big brush against my leg here and there. Sharks, probably. They never bothered us though. We were probably too boring for them. My dad, on the other hand, had two close shark encounters. Once when he was a young lad, he went diving by himself in the California waters, lost track of time and ended up lost. His air levels were getting low, and he had no idea which way was which. Then he saw a great white stalking him. He was already so panicked, he just chose a direction and started swimming. Luckily enough, he made the right choice and ended up on land. He cried on the sand for about an hour. The second encounter was when he was on his honeymoon with my mother in Hawaii. He was out in the ocean with her when he spotted a tiger shark heading straight for them in the shallow water. He dragged my mom out of there so fast, and to this day, he swears he will never go into the ocean ever again.
In Minnesota, it was snapping turtles. We came close to those monsters frequently on the lakes, had a huge one try to climb onboard my friend’s pontoon boat! I always felt uneasy swimming out there, like I was waiting for one to come and bite one of my toes off. Plus, I’ve heard legends of monster fish in those lakes.
While I was at basic training in Missouri, I had a brown recluse spider crawl onto the barrel of my rifle while we were lying in the woods in the prone position, not allowed to move. Then during our FTX we had to camp out in the woods and my battle buddy and I had to use the bathroom. We went out in the dark woods to take turns and earlier, we heard howls from a coyote pack in the night. While we were doing our business, we heard the sound of something surrounding us, saw pairs of eyes circling where we were. I was swinging my rifle around so hard and fast, the adrenaline was coursing through me and I’d never been so terrified of the dark.
Living in Maine (now), we got moose, black bears and ticks. My sister and her boyfriend came across a baby moose on a snowmobile trip once, and it kept messing with the group they were traveling with. Harmless, really. Despite the cuteness of it, the group she was in was worried because more than likely, the mama was close by. Those mama moose can get very aggressive around their calves! Good thing they all made it away before they could find out. She also encountered a huge black bear whilst on the back of her boyfriend’s motorcycle near the New Hampshire boarder crossing the road behind them, but I’m sure buddy was just trying to get to the river for some lunch.
I was also a counselor at a kids camp last year, and I took one of the kids to use the bathroom at night and while I was waiting outside the porta potty, I heard something HUGE coming through the woods close by. I got so terrified, I climbed into the other porta potty and waited maybe 30 minutes till I heard nothing. They had reports of a family of black bears around the area, but it could have also been Bigfoot. The ticks have me paranoid the most, those small little b*stards

We have mountain lions & coyotes here, too. Just part of living in the desert.

I've dealt with deadly snakes, spiders, gators, coyotes, and yes scorpions too. One place I lived, in Las Vegas, we found scorpions throughout our house almost on a daily basis. When you pull back your shower curtain, and there are scorpions, yes multiple, in the bath, you're just relieved they weren't in your shoes that day.

I live in the high desert of Nevada and have had about half of these in my yard at one time or the other. I had a herd of wild horses in my backyard when I left for work this morning.

We were surprised by a peacock in our back yard several years ago. We live in an established residential subdivision and we didn't know of any peacocks anywhere in this area. Also, there was a puma recorded on a security camera in someone's patio only about a mile away. I always have a long handled shovel nearby when I go into my back yard. I keep my shovel blades sharpened.

Last week a young relative was bitten by a rattle snake. She was taken to local hospital then flown to Kansas City for treatment. Anti venom worked and she has now returned home. Thank goodness for life flights. The distance between hospitals about 350 miles.

I grew up in Texas in the country. We had rattle snakes, coral snakes, copperhead snakes, water moccasins snakes and coyotes. I always watched where I was stepping. We saw rattle snakes that were 6-8 feet long.

They don't come in my back yard because of our fence, but we have coyotes and a bobcat in the neighborhood. They only really come through really late at night though, haven't seen them during the day but you can see their tracks in the creek behind us.

I’m in Florida and see gators often. Snakes occasionally. Sharks occasionally. Deer often. Coyote occasionally. When I travel to Yellowstone, you see all sorts of animals including bear and wolves.

I live in western Washington, 40 mins east of Seattle in the foot hills. This spring and summer we had 2-3 bears in our yard each week. We have a lot of coyotes and some cougars. 🤞🏻I haven’t seen a cougar and, thankfully, we have only seen the bears and coyotes from inside the house. We do have a lot of deer. We’ve kind of gotten to know each other. 😍

I have brown recluse and black widow spiders most of the year, as well as hobo spider. We also have a family of deer that bed down in our yard. But, the deadliest were about 7 or 8 baby cotton mouth spiders. Although, when I was little and lived in Florida, we had a swale that a large male gator lived in. It made some really cool noises at night. My Dad said that it was about 8 ft long.

I stepped out of the woodshed once and almost tread upon the tail end of a timber rattlesnake slipping under the steps. They're easy to find; they are usually found in the leaves and they look like leaves.
